This episode is an overview of the entire Ultraman franchise. Ultraman is discussed specifically as the first series, Ultraseven as an example of tweaks/changes made to a sequel series. Other shows/movies are mentioned as recommendations of good start points for modern folks interested in the franchise.
It was an adaptation of Gridman, which wasn't an Ultraman series. It was a Tsuburaya Productions series, however, so there's definitely a reasonable similarity there.
I'll put Leo on our list, but I'd need to track it down for myself and see it, as we have a rule about seeing anything that we cover and if we got deeper into one particular show I'd want to check it out first.
I got a few giant heroes. The first is Jet Jaguar because that robot got me interested in the giant hero genre. The second is Zone Fighter which was inspired by Ultraman and featured Godzilla as a partner in enemy giant monster fights. Third is the various Ultramen. Fourth just because it's rare but does happen whenever a Kamen Rider grows to fight a giant monster like with the Kamen Rider Decade All Riders vs Daishocker.
Excellent job, thanks for the Crash Course. Long time fan of the series, since its initial sydication back in the days BEFORE cable tv! You know, when we actually used antennas and routers in the hopes of pulling in those far-away stations! Big fan of the original series and love the fact that the original actor that portayed Hayata did so again in Ultra Galaxy Legend. BTW, her Shuwatch! was way better.
The Mega Monster Battle movie was my first real introduction to Ultraman, I knew the franchise and barring some memories of watching a dub of original Ultraman series as a kid, Zero was my first. So my Ultraman is Ultraman Zero!
The original series is out on DVD, but it's the dub and a less-than-stellar sub from what I hear. Tiga's also out on DVD in the US (though likely out of print) because of the Fox Box deal. Hi No Tori fansubs is doing Ultraseven. TV-Nihon did subs of some of the 2000s-era shows. Grown Ups in Spandex (GUIS) also did subs of the Zero movies. Unfortunately, a lot of focus has been on the Millennium-era shows and movies and not on the classic Showa Ultramen.
If they ever redo this video they should add in the Netflix ultraman series. It fallows new adventures of the son of the original ultraman. It is animated and dubed.
Nice video! But there's a mistake in this video: Ultraman Mebius was a 2006 tokustatsu TV series, not 2004; it was Ultraman Nexus which was aired in 2004, which followed by Ultraman Max in 2005.
You guys rock! While Ultraman Hayata is the first of the franchise, its not exactly my favorite, Ultraseven I feel was superior simply because of its darker more adult, and intelligent approach to storytelling. Ultraman Tiga is another favorite of mine, and Ultraseven X kicks serious butt. Haven't seen much other Ultra series, largely due to availability, but I'd gladly watch Ultraman Leo because it too has a dark storyline.
I'm a huge fan of the Ultraman series and I can say it was created by Eiji Tsuburaya creator of Godzilla and many of Toko's monsters. Here are the basics of the Ultra's their home planets and their era of showing. Showa Ultra's Ultraman M78 The Land of Light 1966 Zoffy M78 The Land of Light 1967 Ultraseven M78 The Land of Light 1967 Ultraman Jack M78 The Land of Light 1971 Ultraman Ace M78 The Land of Light 1972 Father of Ultra M78 The Land of Light 1972 Mother of Ultra M78 The Land of Light 1973 Ultraman Taro M78 The Land of Light 1973 Ultraman Leo L77 (Destroyed by Magma) 1974 Astra L77 (Destroyed by Magma) 1974 Ultraman King Planet King 1974 Ultraman Jonius U40 1979 Ultraman 80 M78 The Land of Light 1980 Yullian M78 The Land of Light 1980 Ultraman Scott Planet Altra 1989 Ultraman Chuck Planet Altra 1989 Ultrawoman Beth Planet Altra 1989 Ultraman Great M78 The Land of Light 1990 Ultraman Powered M78 The Land of Light 1993 Ultraman Neos M78 The Land of Light 1995 Ultraseven 21 M78 The Land of Light 1995 Ultraman Zearth Z95 1996 Heisei Ultra's Ultraman Tiga ??? 1996 Ultraman Dyna ??? 1997 Ultraman Gaia Earth 1998 Ultraman Agul Earth 1998 Ultraman Nice Planet Toy-1 1999 Ultraman Cosmos ??? 2001 Ultraman Justice ??? 2002 Ultraman Legend Combined power of Cosmos and Justice 2003 Ultraman Boy M78 The Land of Light 2003 Ultraman The Next ??? 2004 Ultraman Nexus ??? 2004 Ultraman Noa Created from a Supernova 2004 Ultraman Max M78 The Land of Light 2005 Ultraman Xenon M78 The Land of Light 2005 Ultraman Mebius M78 The Land of Light 2006 Ultraman Hikari M78 The Land of Light 2006 Ultraseven X ??? 2007 Ultraman Zero M78 The Land of Light 2009 Ultraman Saga Combined power of Dyna, Cosmos and Zero 2011 Ultraman Ginga Somewhere from the Future 2013 Ultraman Victory ??? 2014 Hope this help.
+Shroom Sorcerer Yeah It looks awesome from what I've seen in the trailers. I also heard that there will be a new Ultra named Ultraman Orb, from what I've seen it looks legit but we'll have to wait and see.
My fave is Ultraman Nexus. And his other selves, The Next and Noa. What do ya guys think of the result of the "Ultra N Project" which are the three N Ultras?
I remember CBS dubbed Ultraman in the 1960's and Turner dubbed Ultraseven in 1985 (then rebadged in US and Canada as Ultra7) yeah, finding Ultraman series in English is very hard because it wasn't popular compared to Kamen Rider which is subbed into English by Kamen Rider-based fan groups (I was one of them) My favourite Ultramen are Gaia (1998) Ultraseven (1967), Zero, Nexus (2004) and Agul (also from 1998) This is the first Tokusatsu shows I've watched since 5 years old. Australia did a great job on their own Ultraman. Ultraman Great (1990's) or I call "The 1st foreign Ultra"
My fav giant size hero? hmm. Eren Jeager in his titan form. X3 have you guys review Shingeki no Kyojin aka Attack On Titan yet? if not, can you guys do a review for it please. :3
I'd have to say either Ultraman Taro or Leo from the showa era, they are very intresting ultras, but their shows are worlds apart. could you make a show on the ultraman leo show? im asking because compared to other shows from the showa ere that are "kid freindly" this show is not. the MAC members die alot, their headquarters is destroyed(MAC is ultraman Leo's science patrol) and it just seems quite dark. I hope this request gets put through.
I just watched the chou kamen rider den-o and decade movie. This is my first kamen rider experience. I really loved it but i need a history lesson on the kamen rider universe. What is a good starting point to become familiarized with the characters and plotlines that run through this film. My six year old niece whom i introduced to ultraman 2 yrs ago (she has seen nearly all ultraman from original to ultraman zero and is asking for more) will freakout on kamen rider. Please help me. Thank you.
I disagree with the choice of the Ultra Galaxy movie as entry point to the show. ultraman mebius does a better job. Especially in the way it does it. not so in your face like with Gokaiger or Decade.
KajiRider1997 I would say if you really don't want to get into heavy informational series, Ginga would be your best bet. I know it sucked, but it really got people into Ultraman, like me. If not, then either Ginga S, X, or Orb
That ramen timer was a real thing, funnily enough. Almost bought one the first time I saw it.
I grew up watching Ultraman, when I got into school I talked nothing but Ultraman, I was obsessed and I still am!
Ultraman Jack is my favorite
For me it's Zero

LOVE Kikaider. Definitely on the ever-growing list.
We don't do reviews, but DBZ is on our ever-growing list of future topics.
It was an adaptation of Gridman, which wasn't an Ultraman series. It was a Tsuburaya Productions series, however, so there's definitely a reasonable similarity there.
No worries! Just letting you know. Thanks so much for watching!
I'll put Leo on our list, but I'd need to track it down for myself and see it, as we have a rule about seeing anything that we cover and if we got deeper into one particular show I'd want to check it out first.
I grew up with the Showa Ultraman series. Far and away my favorite tokusatsu shows.
Ultra7 for Showa and Gaia for Heisei. Though Ginga has been alot of fun so far.
Both of Ultra Heroes (including Ultraseven X) IS may favorite.
Ah darn! I think I saw the -us at the end of Nexus and grabbed his start date by mistake!
Ultraman Ginga to Geed please.
Yuusari Amberground Ginga had one helluva theme song, man.
Ultraman ginga
ooh, definitely Ultraman Tiga. the final odyssey was dope
Cosmos is the one that I'm willing to give a go. Still haven't got round to episode 2 though.
Tiga. has been since it aired in 1996. Got the Tshirt, got the DVDs, Got the action figures, Everything awesome is Tiga. :)
I got a few giant heroes. The first is Jet Jaguar because that robot got me interested in the giant hero genre. The second is Zone Fighter which was inspired by Ultraman and featured Godzilla as a partner in enemy giant monster fights. Third is the various Ultramen. I like UltramanZero
Coming back to this 9 years later because I started getting into Ultraman and wanted to return to basics, as, like y'all said, it's a bit of a mess!
for the Showa period, my favorite would be Ultraman and for the Heisei period, my favorite would be Ultraman Nexus.
I currently own the complete Ultraman M713 series from 1966 on DVD. I love it and want to find more Ultraman tokusatu for my collection.
Given that I personally haven't watched a lot of shows or movies depicting giant sized superheroes, I'd have to say my favourite is Kamen Rider J.
Said it before, will say it again: the Metal Heroes are on the list.
Favorite giant superhero?
Maybe Zone Fighter.
The Mega Monster Battle movie was my first real introduction to Ultraman, I knew the franchise and barring some memories of watching a dub of original Ultraman series as a kid, Zero was my first.
So my Ultraman is Ultraman Zero!
Ultraman Tiga was my childhood
OH MY GOD THANK YOU I'VE BEEN WAITHING FOR SO LONG TO SEE IF THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE....... well nerds really if they also like this show too.
If you enable annotations, we've added correction notes to the video.
Oh and well you probably all ready know this but Ultraseven is available now on DVD. :)
The ramen joke was common back in China. Glad someone else also made the joke.
Ultraman Orb is my favorite
Awe Yeah! Thanks for the education! one of these days you should explain Kikaider to us!

Ultraman Hayata, Taro, Tiga, and Ultraman Great.

You really should check out the previews on our Facebook page. I think you'll be happy to see the topic of this week's episode. -Michael
Fun Fact- Ultraman was originally going to be in Ultra Q as a space villain.
Nice video!
But there's a mistake in this video: Ultraman Mebius was a 2006 tokustatsu TV series, not 2004; it was Ultraman Nexus which was aired in 2004, which followed by Ultraman Max in 2005.
I love Ultraman Ace
Was super human syber squad an adaptation of an ultraman series? I remember liking it a lot as a kid.
i like cosmos

Don't worry. Something is definitely happening.
