The older I get the more I relate to this awesome song.... Icehouse are a quintessentially perfect Australian band. The echo effect of their tracks is so reminiscent of the sound of Australia. Vast & deep. Just so f@&king good.
Mate, when I was 15-16 when this came out, it was like I discovered a new religion, it completely blew me away, bought both their first 2 singles and the album, I feel, Aussie music sort of turned a new leaf with this band.
Last night on a bus home, three different Indians yammering away on their phones. I whistle to try and drown out the one closest to me. Up at the back of the bus a fellow begins; in an even better move, playing this on his phone to do the same. It's bittersweet; to say the very least, what the sound of 'Australia' is like now.
I think I was 13 and the first Flowers song I heard and was instantly in love with Iva Davies. He really is a stunning frontman. Now I'm older, I am awed by the talent of the band, the musicianship, songwriting. Icehouse were one of the very best of the new wave/punk era in Oz. So glad to have grown with them. 🩷🩷
I feel my stomach twisting as i remember this song, and how much less complicated life was back in the 80's wish I could go back in time and live in the 80's forever...
I feel the same, I was at school in Sydney when this came out, I was in a black place, everything was dark....but let's not go back to the 80's, live for now! this song just reminds me of my stomach twisting at school....
True. They used to play at sefton hotel. I went there one night and there was a huge crowd all round. Spent afternoon once in sefton pool they were there
Watched this awesome rock band play at Mornington Racecourse (Feb, 2024, Red Hot Summer Tour) sounded just perfect ! - So glad I have heard this live now !
Absolutely quality tune. I grew up in early 80s when my old mum and dad played records every nite before we all went to bed. This tune brings back memories. Icehouse were so underrated
I live in the middle of the US. I can assure you that I make up probably 80% of the Icehouse fans within several hours of me. Also I'm not great at math.
I grew up in Buttcrack Ohio and when i wanted this album I went to the local record store . They did not have it but ordered it for me . I could pick it up in a month.... kids have it too easy now lol
This band had a presence in the 80's that was in a class of its own! Sadly today they are hardly remembered on the radio of which they once virtually ruled!
This is my favourite song of all time....I love it so much and my husband proposed to me when I was playing it which makes it even more memorable for me.
The sound of Sydney's Northern Beaches right here in the early 80's ... Icehouse were a Northern Beaches band ... Iva lived up Whale Beach. This was our music back in the day and still one of my fave Icehouse songs of all time.
One of my favourites from my childhood. This song is so clever. The music goes round and round in changing keys. It effectively reflects the lyrics....he really can't himself!!!
Classic 80's sound---tight, efficient, slick guitar, along with synthesizer. I actually have this on cassette tape I bought in the early 80's. (Yep, I'm an old bag now.)
I'm 40 and I used cassette tapes for the first 20 years of my life. I think this song was actually recorded at the end of 1979 and released at the beginning of 1980.
Their best song by miles and i love it. " I think im making it up, i should be putting it down and it's beginning to show, i get a fix in my head and i can't let go.... Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh " !!!!! How could you not live this song!!
Ok, I'm going to admit this here - I am from the UK and I am sure safe to say that from a decade I didn't exist in, something obviously went wrong when record companies in the UK didn't want this band. They are just so tasteful in texture to the ear to me, and when I am in Australia I always play their gems.
I was only 13 when I heard Flowers AKA Ice House - totally bleeeeew meeeee aaawaaaaay . . . . . . ( Ps: I was stoned . . . . 😎) Hats off to these Guys! They were Revolutionary!! Mi-Sex springs to mind! Love these Guys!
first saw them in a little place called Frenchs in Darlinghurst, heard some sounds on my way back from East Sydney Tech Food school, went in and was blown away, brilliant
My first gig in 1980 was, The flowers backing up INXS and Angels when i think about it it blows my mind, what do the kids get now in Sydney absolutely nothing, its a different world. I'm so glad i was part of it
@@michaelgenias8491 Yeah I was at the gig in Melbourne ( London Tavern , Caulfield ) where ,would you believe, Mental as anything supported Flowers at their first gigs in Melb. A nice double bill, small suburban hotel btw. Also caught INXS at martini's in Carlton, full house in a small venue, ended up as a house record crowd I believe. Was right near the front, was very early on in their career also, great memories, great era for aussie rock.
Figure how many great Australian bands were Sydney North Shore/Northern Beaches based ... Midnight Oil, Icehouse/Flowers, INXS, Boom Crash Opera, Mental As Anything, Noise Works, Celibate Rifles, Divinyls ... it's endless
When I get this way, I wanna be someone else...if I had seen this in 1980 I would have been on a plane to Australia and I would have stalked Iva until they threw me in jail. Or until he married me. Whatever. We're all old now, but I can't help myself from listening to this song over and over and over...

Flowers was actually owned by another group on an international basis. So they had to get another name. they picked the name of their biggest hit "Icehouse." Remember this from back int he 70's when I was a big fan in the US. I have both versions of their 1st album
The first part is correct Tony about the name already in use by another group. The debut album was actually titled "Icehouse" and this is why they decided to go with it. The song "Icehouse" was only a minor hit and this one & "We Can Get Together" were more widely recognised.
Cool, so they were named for the LP not the song. Good to learn something new. Been a fan since the start. Maybe I'll get the time and money to fly down under and see them live again one day
Craig A It was kicking around in my head and the lyrics weren't distinct enough to be google. It was a lucky that it came up in my recommended section.

Man so many great songs on this album!!!!!
This tune ‘gets in your system’ decades on.
Totally 80's cool. What a great decade we Gen X's lived in ! I've never really left it.

this song personified the early 80's in Sydney for me. I was 11 at the time.
pure, new wave Australian music.....perfect really

One of the greatest bands that most people don't know about.....
Well known in Oz and hugely popular. Iva Davies on tour next month
LOL😂 ( MOST PEOPLE ) DONT KNOW ABOUT THE GREATEST!!!! 😂LOL

We know about them and that’s all that matters .
We all know this band they are now just called Icehouse
This song was i n Latchford 1990 Rest in Heavenly Peace Trev, Good Job.
This song's harmony is so cyclical it could probably be run non-stop for ten years straight and still be just as catchy.
and here we are , still talking about it 40 years later, I am going to get real old,,, soon
I grew up in Buttcrack Ohio and when i wanted this album I went to the local record store . They did not have it but ordered it for me . I could pick it up in a month.... kids have it too easy now lol
Lol they sure do. I remember going to the local record store, a life time ago😢
It's a timeless album, and your so right, if they can't watch/listen straight away you've lost them.
Ridiculously good music
Great 80's sound! Thank you, Ice House, for this masterpiece ❤

Same. Definitely an 80s fave.

The 80s the best musical decade‼️
how I miss those days.... simple times.
For rock, the 70's were better.
Silverchair, icehouse, INXS, Midnight oil, Australian crawl, the angles and hoodoo gurus binge today, happy Australia Day!
