The Lessons That Competitive Youth Sports Are Losing | Erin Keating | TEDxYouth@DHS

Erin Keating, a high school senior, recounts the lessons that she's learned as a part of her competitive volleyball team, and investigates how the idea of "participation trophies" may not actually be beneficial to student athletes. Erin Keating is a high school senior and has been a student-athlete her whole life. She started playing volleyball in middle school and began to take it seriously during her freshman year of high school. She plays for Adversity Volleyball Club and through her time in sports she has seen the power of competition and learned to use it to motivate herself. Erin was able to grow as a player and a person when she leaned into the competition of club volleyball, and the competition to make high school varsity teams. Before she heads to college she wants to share her story with other high school athletes and encourage them to keep growing and competing. I grew up pretty competitive in sports/esports. One of the hardest things for me was to watch/play alongside others who just don't care enough to play to win/improve. They just didn't have the drive to take chances and reflect on their mistakes and try to get better. And if you point that out while not being in a leading/respected role, you're seen as a snob.
Finding balance between competition and having fun is extremely hard as well.
