    People, be reminded this is a demo. If you are a woman or man getting assaulted, the aggressor will not let you do it so easily, make sure your practice these moves alot. Be ready and stay psychologically strong in order to pull these moves off.

      yes ! it looks simple! and it is! but you gotta practice! in BJJ you actually fight against your classmates, and you end up in pretty bad situations, then you must learn to stay calm ... so during a real situation, you WILL HAVE the mindset needed to handle the situation!

      This is a very good point.
      The attack by a vicious guy high on drugs, may begin with a hammer punch just in front of the ear, and when you wake up, you may have a knife at your throat. Better to learn some techniques than to be helpless, but do not forget your Glock 26 in a hidden holster.

      Agree when your getting punched in the face its a lot harder to do this kind of stuff. You know the saying punch a black belt in the face they turn into a brown belt and so on lol

    If you're a women in this situation and you decide to use one of these chokes I would make sure you're mentally prepared enough to hold that choke until the attacker is dead. It's possible to regain consciousness extremely quickly from a blood choke and if you can't escape in time you're going to end up with one seriously pissed off attacker who is going to know to defend against chokes now. Just my two cents..

      @IamHueGraves 8 років тому +8

      I don't know, it's faster than the movies but it's more than a couple seconds, It's usually at least enough time to run. Probably good to mentally prepare to kill someone anyway when training self defense

      It can easily be a couple minutes or more. Enough time to calmly walk away (not that one would). As with any Jiujitsu school, I can tell you I've witnessed students going out from a choke that was accidentally held slightly too long. My teacher for instance was demonstrating a choke on a black belt, and wasn't even really sinking in the choke, but just slightly holding it in place. He was still in the explaining process of the technique and we all realized at the same time that the guy passed out (again, a common occurrence at bjj school). It took him several minutes to awake, and when he did, he was groggy and disoriented. Which is also normal. Jiujitsu in incredibly and realistically effective for real life situations.

      @North American UA-camr I intend practice all of these chokes, with a partner, starting out in super slow motion, memorizing each move, gradually working up to a less & less cooperative partner. On their website, they have some free lessons, and in Lesson 1, they emphasize to start out in extreme slow motion, including the proper way be an attacking opponent. The attacker has to be extremely cooperative at first, as well as remind the "victim" when they are leaving themselves vulnerable to punches, etc. Cooperativeness is reduced at a very gradual pace, and only after all the moves & transitions are memorized properly. Considering how Rener is not shy about making uber-long videos (pun not intended, but I'll take it), I'm surprised they didn't spend a couple minutes talking about how to properly practice these techniques.

    • @Lookatmeshine
      @Lookatmeshine 7 років тому +18

      As someone who has been choked you might regain consciousness quickly but you generally aren't "awake" enough to go straight into attack mode. You are going to have restored senses in stages and depending on how the choke effected them they will be dizzy and stumbly. So while I agree that yes hold until they have been out for a bit longer than pass out stage if you feel you need it... it's unlikely you will need to.

    Also here are some more tips!
    -Take a picture of the car and license plate before getting into the car and then send those pictures to friends are family
    -Do your best to pay attention to where you’re going
    -It’s good to remember details of the driver (tattoos,jewelry,hair color, etc)
    -sit right behind the driver
    -also don’t get too close it gives you both personal space
    -DO NOT share information with the driver like if you’re new in town or who you live with or if you live by yourself if the driver’s being a weirdo and asking too many questions just lie. Your life could be in danger tell them you’re meeting up with family or friends
    -TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. If the driver is giving you weird or bad vibes just don’t get in the car, say you’ll get a different one or if you’re already in the car then immediately tell them to stop and drop you off right there
    -BEFORE getting in make sure the picture and name of the driver match the driver on the app
    Feel free to add more!

    It's actually more dangerous for uber drivers than uber passengers. We as true uber drivers have background test but the passages don't.

    • @bdpjumbi
      @bdpjumbi 8 років тому +33

      Very true. Drivers are more likely to be assaulted than passengers. drivers are generally out trying to earn a living while passengers can be drunk or what not.

      An uber driver who drives full time, may pick 100 people up in a week. an uber passenger may ride 5 times a week. who has more chances of getting assaulted especially when you are dealing with drunk passengers and entitled people

      +SwitchBladeCrisis420 people posing as uber drivers or lyft drivers is not a uber or lyft issue. it is a passenger issues. passengers need to be aware. passengers needs to keep communication. passengers need to probe drivers before entering. dont be dumb to enter a car because it is uber. verify the license plate of the car before entering.

    • @RoadDawgLife
      @RoadDawgLife 8 років тому +12

      no one gave a damn about dangerous passengers when the passengers were riding with traditional taxi drivers and there was no Uber or Lyft. Now that the masses are Uber drivers... whooaaa to the poor Uber driver... his passengers maybe be dangerous. Well, HELLO... driving a taxi has always been a dangerous job. Just because the taxi is now called Uber/Lyft, nothing has changed.

    • @paakw3si

      +Aaden Daniels exactly. the irony and hypocrisy of this is that, this same people will flag down a taxi driver new York city, and no one will ever know they got into a cab. At least with Uber and lyft, the driver where about is always accounted for.

      Emmanuel Lescouflair I've actually fought someone in a car before. So yeah... YOu can turn if you fight for it and kick around. It's hard to get leverage on someone in a confined space because you can't move to certain positions to get that leverage. But twisting around in a spot is able to be accomplished.

      I've only been training for 2 months now but even with that tiny experience I feel a lot more in control when sparring. For example I was rolling with a brand new white belt recently and I felt I was doing a okay job with him. Couldn't submit him but he couldn't submit me or keep me in his guard. Anyway at the end of class he was getting changed and it turned out he was absolutely ripped like some pro athlete.

    1. Check the make, model and license plate.
    Both Uber and Lyft provide the license plate for the car you called in the app. Before getting into the vehicle, check that the license plate number matches what you see in the app.
    2. Ask the driver who they're picking up.
    Rideshare drivers are given the name of their passenger upon accepting a ride. Before getting into the vehicle, ask the driver to confirm who they're there to pick up. If they don't have your name, it's likely not your ride.
    3. Check that your driver matches the picture provided.
    Uber and Lyft provide riders with a picture of the driver picking them up. Before getting into the vehicle, make sure the person behind the wheel is the person pictured in the app.
    4. Find the child lock on the side of the back passenger door.
    Before getting inside the vehicle, open the back passenger door and look for a lever, switch or twist lock near the side as pictured below. This is where the child safety lock is located on most vehicles.
    5. Check to make sure the child safety lock is set to the unlock position.
    An indentation above the child safety lock lever, switch, or twist lock on the side of the door will tell you which position is locked and which is unlocked. Set the switch to the unlock position.
    For a twist lock, use any key or narrow flat surface to twist the lock to the unlock position. Remember, the person driving the vehicle won’t know you moved the lock unless they see or hear you do it. It could've been accidental. The driver could have had their kids dropped off at school this morning and they just didn't undo the lock. Do not excitedly react as there are reasons the lock could have been enabled. However, stay on guard at all times and have them drop you off NEAR where you actually want to go; not to your actual home.
    6. If you have an iPhone, make sure that you are signed into your iCloud & your Photos are syncing to the cloud. Ben if you lose this battle you have a crystal clear and well lit set of Photos in the cloud even if they destroy your phone. When the driver arrives while it looks like you’re checking your messages discretely snap a series of photos of the driver, the car, AND the license plate as you check the back. Text ANYONE that you are leaving in this ride share driven by this person (give their name & photo). Do this messaging IN the car as they’ll be busy driving somewhere of the beaten path saying they know a short cut. Attach the photos then make sure to Lock your phone and keep your Emergency Call button positioned under your thumb OR even pre-dial 911. The moment they try to come back to YOU...CALL & scream bloody murder or blow a rape whistle. If you have an Apple Watch you can activate you SOS feature. If you do not disable it in 5 seconds police are comes to your location; you just have to keep fighting. Scratch the hell out of your attacker(s). Always take a chunk of them with you! Do not be afraid to bite them as well! Stay alive.
    7. I personally recommend wearing thin barbed wire hidden within the hair pretty much in all styles. I also recommend barbed wire bracelets/anklets on both wrists and ankles (depends on the outfit). These are in addition to the more common use security items like pepper spray, whistles, several stiletto switch blades (keep one in your bra, and one in your waist and/or sock), and a gun.

    Some very useful techniques against an attacker who is willing to wait for you to get in position and then tap out. Perhaps some aggressive role play and some actual physical contesting and or striking, hair pulling etc within the realms of reason obviously. But the training needs to be uncomfortable and attempt to replicate some of the emotion, intimidation, fear and adrenaline of an actual attack. Otherwise all the training in the world may mean nothing if the victim of the attack is too shocked and or terrified to employ it. Girls or boys doesn't matter, some muscle memory, some benefit to repetitive motions and actions will be there for sure. But most people who aren't around violence much simply freeze up when emotion and adrenaline surges. Most of the adrenaline goes into screaming and crying and if the situation is violent enough loss off bodily control, shakes, bowel movement etc. The ID-Inside-In Touch advice excellent and very beneficial. Thank you, some other great tips and advice in the comments here as well. worth checking out. appreciate your skills and techniques and 'safe' training in the dojo does have its place. But real world situations require real world practice. Again within reason. Never allow yourself to be abused in a class or training situation. But training that only focusses on physical techniques and ignores the mental and emotional component of attacks aren't as useful in real situations as those that do. My two cents, take it or leave it. All the best everyone, stay safe. peace and blessings

    What's wrong with these videos and teachings is that the person playing the attacker doesn't fight back. That's what I hate. If you are going to teach people how to defend themselves actually attack the person, give the victim an actual panicky feeling and give them the feeling of viciousness in the person. That's how you mentally prepare victims to defend themselves if necessary.

    This is great. Most women probably think lying on their back with a man holding them down is the most helpless position they can be in. Nope, you can mess a person up from there.

    6:35 to 6:41... Yes! I love that choke, especially. Love all of them, but the no-jacket version of the cross-choke is beautiful for the defender; bad for the sucker dumb enough to attack their would-be victim.
    Good looking out on the Uber awareness, Rener and Eve. Thanks.

    Another good practice when you are with someone that is getting an Uber or even a taxi, is to take a picture of the license and the driver when they pick your friend up, especially if they are drunk. And be obvious about it...
    If you are alone, getting a ride, take pictures and txt the picture to your friend. A proper driver will not mind. Sounds embarrassing to do, but better to be safe. This is common practice in Asia.

    I had a fake uber driver trick me into his car when my boyfriend ordered me one once, I'm grateful I had a tablet with data and charge and that I was noticeably sending maps screenshots of where we were to my partner, or else he definitely would not have drove me home. I didn't know any self defense techniques and escaped because I luckily got angry and argued against him when he tried to get me to answer questions that would isolate me "e.g do you know where we are, can you call people on your tablet, does it have internet?" And I scared him into just driving me to my boyfriend's. It was a terrifying experience for my bf and I so sadly we didn't get the licence plate before he took off in the dark. But now I am making sure I can defend myself physically if this ever happens again even though I'm highly cautious of it now.

    For comments asking if the attacker has a weapon or taser, the victim would be screwed unless the victim also has a weapon like mace or a taser. When weapons are drawn, most martial art skills pretty much go out the window.

    my concern is that in those demonstrations it didn't look like the guy was resisting. I've taken self-defense before and was excited that I could get out of a choke hold when practicing with the instructor, but when a guy friend used REAL force on me to see what I learned, I couldn't get out of it. Then again, he was also expecting it, so perhaps the element of surprise with a combination of speed will do the trick.

      Depends on what type of choke: air or blood. Air chokes may take however long they can hold their breath and blood choke should be seconds because you're cutting off the blood flow to the brain.

    I'm starting BJJ soon (very excited) and I very much agree with what you're saying but I think that Uber and Lift etc. are way over rated. People want to take them because they don't want to ride in a yellow cab. They want to look good arriving to their destination in a Mercedes etc. but paying double the price of a cab and possibly putting yourself in a bad situation just isn't worth it. I use Yellow Cab and I've only had 1 bad experience. It was 3am, the driver was either drunk or on drugs. I had her pull over immediately and let me out. I did not pay her. I called Yellow Cab and told them what had happened and they made her stay there with me until another cab arrived. The new driver was great and I made it home safely.
