I owned a DRZ 400 SM in the past and fell in love with SM because of it. Back in the market, I REALLY wanted the KTM 690, but for the same price I got (two) KLXs instead. KLX 300 dual sport for trails and gravel, and a KLX 300 SM for street. Wheelies are not really there without modding sprockets and long tours are not really there either. Otherwise, lots of fun with either KLX or both. Inexpensive, reliable, and long maintenance intervals.
Thanks for the honesty on the 450L . So refreshing to hear someone say that a bike is maintenance heavy. Usually they say this bike is bullet proof or reliable. But it is a race bike and revs to the moon. And will need a new piston every 2 years
Although less maintenance than a KTM, an old KTM rfs engine 2003-2007 are pretty much bulletproof, I'd take a exc 450 or 525 exc over a drz any day, my brother had a drz 400, they're heavy and lacking power. A 525 is much more fun for supermoto. I have a 2004 450 exc with close to 500 engine hours I only changed the top end at 250 for peace of mind with a hi comp piston, no problems with the bike whatsoever in 500 hours. Also have a 2006 525 exc in supermoto trim also no problems at all. Great bikes!
drz rider here. Also respect to the xr650l, since theres a guy I do races and trackdays with who rides one. Our bikes sound way different from all the ktms and huskys out there :D
I am an old school enduro rider probably like your dad. I purchased a new 23 klx300sm and absolutely love the looks and ride of this little single. My softail Deluxe is parked in the garage only to be out with my wife on the back. Nice video and thumbs up for your dad pulling those wheelies.
I have a DRZ400SM with a full Yoshi system and Keihin carb. I love it! I came from 1000cc sports bikes and bikes like the KTM690's etc are appealing but I'm getting older now and don't want to get in any more trouble. By the way, love the Squatch sticker on your dad's bike. We have some massive Yowies here in Australia.
For informative purposes on the 450L, a stage 1 kit = ecu & exhaust, makes it roughly 47hp. Stage 2 kit = upgraded cam and valve springs, makes it around 58ish hp. The stage two kit really opens up the bike, maybe too much. On the dirt I can say it's probably a bit much, but supermoto would make sense. Either way it's a great bike. Anyone reading this don't listen to the haters about the bike. You DO have to throw some money into it, depending what time of riding you do, but the best part of the bike is the versatility and that's why I will never get rid of mine.
690 SM no question. I had a WR250X - nice bike but slow as hell. I had a DRZ400SM - also a very nice bike but also slow. I had a couple of 690s. The first one, a 2019, had an oil leak problem at the shift shaft and was prone to false neutrals. A couple years later I got another, I believe a 2021, and it was faultless. The amount of power these bikes make with a street legal single cylinder is incredible. Outstanding chassis too. I rode one at a track day on a road course (big track) and it had no problem holding its own against sport bikes in the Intermediate group.
All very nice, of course as they go up in paygrade nicer. Thanks for this breakdown as I’m just breaking back into riding after being sole provider to my kids. Hope they want to ride with me like you and your pops, very cool!🤙 I will start with most affordable so looking at DRZ 400 SM. Im 5’4” 105 lbs so not sure about fit but there’s always aftermarket lowering options so looking forward to it 😃
Right on! Will more than likely need a lower link but being lighter the drz will scoot with you on it! Im Very lucky to have my dad as a riding comrade! Thanks for watching and ride safe! 🤘🏼😎 sumos for the win!

Good video was thinking about getting a SM to slow down from crazy sports bike speeds but having good handling and punchy acceleration. Not sure my problem is that KTM, Husky’s and Ducatis have doubtful reliability. Also big single cylinder engines don’t like continual excessive revs which could cause issues or mechanical failure.

I just recently bought a hypermotard 1100 for longer trips. Awesome do everything bike but maybe not a real supermoto.
The hypermotard is freaking sweet! Very jealous. Definitely supermoto big brother. Maintenance is definitely a factor! The crf450l 600mile oil changes compared to a crf300l 8,000miles oil change 😂lol. Thanks for watching! 🤘🏼😎

I would get a 690 over a 450RL any day, (well I already did in October). The outgoing 2023 690 was actually $1000 off for me making it cheaper than the 450RL. I could not be happier with my choice, upgraded from a crf250l.
U leave out the wr450 swap to sumo and the wr250x came stock in supermoto with upgraded brakes and fat tires, and blinkers. I saw them keep up and race KTM 690 on small track. On a 250!?!?!?
Now you got the Ducati now that looks like it's going to be on the top. BTW you could have made that corner. I run the Dragon all the time on my KTM990SMT.
The ducati looks insanely cool! Will be interesting to see how people like it. Definitely just lost traction and freaked me out 😂 bet the ktm 990 is a blast on the tail! Thanks for watching! 😎🤘🏼
Old ktm rfs bikes ftw! 2004-2007 ktm 525 exc best supermoto in my opinion, light and lots of power, wheelie machine and bulletproof reliable. Only thing that'd leave it behind and is more fun is an aprilia sxv 550 but they aren't very reliable from what I've heard...
I have a Drz400 and love it but wish I had more power and six gears. The Husky and Ktms are amazing but pricey. I'm thinking of building a dr650 next for pretty cheap and keep both.

8:23 Damn dude that was close. Target fixation? Just lean it in next time and look into the corner. Those tyres will not lose grip! I have sumo. With which I almost killed myself in 2019. I went out in very very similar turn like you managed to stay on road in this clip. I got thrown off the road, into the trees, down the road. Took me 7months to start walking again. :) Bike took it better than I did. My sumo sucks for commuting tho. I am now thinking of replacing it for something more "gentle". xD Always full gear-ON guys! Have fun, take care! ✌

Bought a 2023 KAWASAKI KLX 300 SM new rode it 350 miles and traded it on used HUSKY 701. KLX is cool little great handling SLOW motorcycle, HUSKY on the other hand is a beast in every aspect . If your an experienced rider just go for the top tier Supermoto and you"ll actually save the few thousand it cost me making the wrong choice.
120/70 17 140/70 17 We rock the conti attack sm evo tires they dont last long but man do they get sticky on the street! Super confidence inspiring tire!
Due to get my stark varg electric in a month 😂. But i suspect it’ll make one helluva sm. 80hp (more than the ktm/huskie 690/701) and only 20 lb heavier than your cr450. Not to mention instant and massive torque. Can’t wait to try it. Also no maintenance. Probably only 60 miles of range though :(
Super jealous! My exact thoughts when i saw those. That would be insane supermoto! Range would definitely be interesting to find out! Gotta be less juice ⚡️ use than off road? Even if your pushing it
@@Floatsorrolls1 exactly what I’m hoping. I’ve had a zero fxs (another sm that could be there on your list of the best) for a couple years and it’s a blast! (45 hp, 300 lb, ~90lbft torque). The stark hopefully takes it up another level. Range will be the question mark though…
I dont get it why you all praise the rfvc engine so much? It is heavy, it needs constant oil changes and has a very low oil capacity anyway so it runs super hot in a super short time, you barely can hold up highway speeds cause it just needs to run on high rpm there, the stock clutch is also weak. So you first need to upgrade cluch, oilcooler etc to get a half decent running engine for supermoto hooliganism it still lacks proper suspension and brakes. And when you just need to spend 3-4k more to get a 701/690 over a stock 650 i think there is no way to recommend a half century old bike anymore cause even if you put 5k upgrade into a rvfc engine, any modern liquid cooled engine just destroys it in any single way possible. I drive a 92´ rfvc nx500 supermoto conversion and compared to my old fantic supermoto i was just shocked that even with 60% less hp i would have destroyed the nx500 with the fantic and i dont want to mention of how much better a 701/690 tops all of that. And if you want to get a decent highway bike with supermoto type of performance there is no way around a 890smt. If you want to do a conversiation nowadays - get a tracer 7 and strip it off the fairings. And before getting a crf450 get a 300 2stroker. But i think here in europe we have much more choice for a "out of the factory" good supermoto like we have the fantics, the betas, the shercos, the tm´s, the husabergs used market, and ofc we have a huge 50cc 2stroke market where every type of geared bike can be easily tuned to at least 30hp/100kg weight. But we dont have the old Honda anymore and also something like the 300klx is complete missing.
I think the new ducati will be insanely cool in terms of power and fun to ride. They mention really good maintenance intervals. But do think it’ll be interesting to see how reliable they are and unforeseen complications or issues they run into being a brand new motoor. I also like how light it is being right in the ball park of all the supermotos mentioned in the video but more power than the ktm/husky. Be interesting to see wht maintance costs are and how complex they are to work on. Tht being said Any brand getting into supermotos especially higher end ones gets some respect in my book 🫡 hope some day i could afford one 🤣
Because i have yamaha wr250x. Its very smooth and i prefer to the beginners who have a desire to enter to the racing and do some wheelies and stunts. Easy to maintain and we cant expect yz250f power from it to be honest. If someone care about better fuel consumption, wr250x is lot more better. Overall its good one for regular use. And thanks a lot for your quick response bro....❤❤
Hell, i had a wr250 and its faster than a drz400. Was $4600, used but very clean. Threw a fmf and power commander on, and rid of the smog crap for another $800. Rode it 30 miles each way on the highway for 2 years till the crank bearing went lol. I was doing upwards of 100 for extended periods lol

@@gersonjimenez5737 I'd go with an exc over a crf 450... I've had crf 450s road legal they don't last long till they need new top end rebuilds ( lose power ) not sure on the new ktms reliability but the 04-07 4 strokes are really really reliable. They have a good reputation just Google rfs KTM and they're known for being bulletproof for reliability

Now you got me looking at Supermotos!? This channel is to hard on my savings account. lol
we have a problem 😂 but hey cant take the saving account with yah when ur gone! Might as well enjoy it while u can 😎🤘🏼lol
I have a Drz400 and love it but wish I had more power and six gears. The Husky and Ktms are amazing but pricey. I'm thinking of building a dr650 next for pretty cheap and keep both.
I bet the DR would be a fantastic supermoto. Thinking about one myself. Keep me posted.
Cheers!
I am now thinking of replacing it for something more "gentle". xD
Always full gear-ON guys! Have fun, take care! ✌
I freaked out cuz i lost traction in rear then chose to come to a stop 😂 definitely could have made it just caught me off guard. Glad you were able to recover and ride again! Thanks for watching and sharing 😎🤘🏼
Thanks for the video. It would be more helpful if your voice was louder. Perhaps a better microphone?
Appreciate the feedback will definitely try some different settings or turn up gain more. Thanks for watching!
Aprilia baby
What did you end up for gearing on the 450l. ?????
49 tooth rear stock front. Here is the video of all the things we changed to eliminate our issues on the 450.

I had a husaberg fs570 best bike ever!!
Ktm 660 smc 04. Keihin fcr 41 & kick starter only.
The new Ducati "690" supermoto is wicked and I like the Gas Gas 700.
698*
Bought a 2023 KAWASAKI KLX 300 SM new rode it 350 miles and traded it on used HUSKY 701. KLX is cool little great handling SLOW motorcycle, HUSKY on the other hand is a beast in every aspect . If your an experienced rider just go for the top tier Supermoto and you"ll actually save the few thousand it cost me making the wrong choice.
The t7 supermoto is what I’m looking at to build
I really like the way you think 😎🤘🏼 that would be sickk!
@@Floatsorrolls1 thanks player! Keep making videos!!!

Appreciate it and Yes 👍🏼 😎
@@Floatsorrolls1 Awesome, thanks!
What super moto tire sizes on the 450l????
120/70 17
140/70 17
We rock the conti attack sm evo tires they dont last long but man do they get sticky on the street! Super confidence inspiring tire!
Beautiful Xr,, I drive a Yamaha xtx 660 gen 2, I don’t thing this bike was sold to the Us, double piped akrapovic is music to my ears
Appreciate it! Never heard of the xtx 660 tht bike is sweet! Thanks for watching🤘🏼
Sumos are cool but i would take the dualsport versions of this bikes and this coming from a most road bike user
Best of both worlds if you do a conversion set up 🤷🏼♂️😉
I dont get it why you all praise the rfvc engine so much?
How do you think the new Ducati is gonna compare?
I think the new ducati will be insanely cool in terms of power and fun to ride. They mention really good maintenance intervals. But do think it’ll be interesting to see how reliable they are and unforeseen complications or issues they run into being a brand new motoor. I also like how light it is being right in the ball park of all the supermotos mentioned in the video but more power than the ktm/husky. Be interesting to see wht maintance costs are and how complex they are to work on. Tht being said Any brand getting into supermotos especially higher end ones gets some respect in my book 🫡 hope some day i could afford one 🤣
A modern EFI 450
Thats the boat ramp at fontana
Top tier spot. Lol looks really sick when fog is on the water
Might as well get the new Ducati
Limited speed: 💀
KTM 690
KTM 990
KTM 1390 DUKE SUPERMOTO
No gasgas?.
Bro why dont you mention about Yamaha WR250X which is coming as company supermoto. It's EFI. I prefer its more better than kawasaki LX250 🫣🫣
Not available in the united states 😕 otherwise i would have! Yamaha all the way by far best quality brand
I liked your dads bike the best.
7k budget option?🤨
Used crf 450l
Used 690 lol. Theres one for sale by me for 4k
Used wr450
Hell, i had a wr250 and its faster than a drz400.
Was $4600, used but very clean. Threw a fmf and power commander on, and rid of the smog crap for another $800. Rode it 30 miles each way on the highway for 2 years till the crank bearing went lol. I was doing upwards of 100 for extended periods lol
AJP SPR 250 supermoto with factory 280cc kit + racing exhaust comes for around 7k I believe.
Xr650l is the best bike I got 2 I got crf450rl I dont like to much I got crf 300l good bike I got crf250l is ok and I got crf450r I dont like for me Xr650l crf300l
