I feel like the prologue also serves to show thorfinn not as a saint for his naive pacifist ideals, he crawled in the mud for so many years doing exactly what his father told him not to only to experience his hollow revenge staring him in the face And the story begings with him having to live with it, and choosing to move forward Such a great, bold work Amazing video
Always love your stuff! I love Vinland Saga for the same reasons that I love Berserk and Vagabond: it's a series where the main character end up questionning his hopes, goals, dreams and the reasons he's pursuing them for. It's less aspirationnal than shonen protagonists having one big dream and never waivering even in the face of unsurmountable adversity, but man for someone like me it's extremely relatable.
Love to see another Aaox review, especially about a series I love so much. I actually really enjoyed the OST this season, but like you I think it is much better in isolation, I'm not even sure if I heard 1/4 of the tracks in the anime but when I listened to it again I was enthralled which is something I can't say for the first season. While I think the animation was a step down (there is a massive stiffness to the anime that is hard to fully overlook, partially due to the very complex designs of the characters), the background and colours of this season were amazing and gorgeous that it hurts so much more when you see thsi farm destoried by war. I would have been nice to hear, as a manga reader, your opinon on the addition anime only content but perhaps that would fit your style. Thanks for the video and look forward to the next one :)
Rare not to mention of Arnheid, considering all the focus that she got, and the VA performance. Talking about the score, all the Arnheid scenes wouldn't have work without the overpowering piano flowing trough each sequence.
Vinland Saga is such a funny case to be honest. A series that started its fame with recommendations such "bring me closer i wanna hit him with my sword" boat meme, "he literally punches through a horse!" and most common "dude, berserk with vikings!" did such a masterful bait and switch later on in its run. I didn't read the source material, yet. But i do agree that the first part is fairly necessary to hammer in that pacifistic message across. To say that the naivete of some situations escaped my notice would be a lie, but what you said in this review is what probably opened my eyes as to why it never bothered me that some lowly slave talked down to warmongering king, and not only succeed, but came out from the situation with head on his shoulders. That hard work and stubbornness with which Makoto Yukimura tries to realize the message of pacifism in this work is probably only matched by that of the protagonist he created himself. You really can feel sincerity and faith that comes across from the message. Great work as always, highly entertaining review that helped me to put some things on its proper place in my mind. Cheers!
yay!!! I have been waiting for this :) Thanks aaox Good video, it always strikes me how you put my exact thoughts into words sometimes, its like "thats exactly what i was thinkin!" whenever i see a video of yours.
Gotta say, vinland saga season 2, and chainsaw man adapttion have really surprised me in terms of general animation, and production value. I'm not a big fan of mappa, due to their often muted color palette, and jaring 3d environments. Always made me feel like a crazy person, when I was watching anything by them, and didn't love it. These two though? Let's just say I hope more adaptations are like them.
I watched it with my cousin. Long story short, he waited the entire season for Thorfin to fight and it didn't come. Blue balled. If there comes a season 3 we might give it an episode just because the writing and animation was that good but it wasn't what we came for.
I felt kind of betrayed by this arc when I read the manga, because Thorfinn's rejection of violence felt like it was leading up to his conversion to Christianity, which would've made a lot of sense in the context of the story. Later Thorfinn even marries a Christian lass during a time skip, and I always found this omission to be rather jarring. The arc felt hollow to me and lacking punch, the problem of violence and evil is never truly tackled in a larger metaphysical sense. Violence simply is bad because ????. As always, great video, Aaox. Keep doing your best, brother, and God bless you.
Violence is bad because in the end it hurts more than it heals or helps, and causes more human suffering rather than minimizing or reparing suffering. I don't think we necessarily need metaphysical reasoning to take a stance against violence. This good ol' "but without Christianity people would just be monsters without principles" thing is very strange, given how in the history of humanity entire nations like China had complex moral systems and social principles without the need for God telling them to do it. If the lack of more explicit Christianity in there was so jarring to you it ruined your enjoyment, I don't know what to say. Focusing on moral and emotional growth and not religious conversion is a way to make a piece of work more universal and accessible/relatable to a wider audience, and honestly that's a good thing. A stand against violence, and for community, mutual aid, empathy and cooperation does not require a religious framework.
I noticed that it seemed to be going that way as well, and kind of wanted to see how that would parallel Cnut/Canute, historically Christian but hardly pacifistic. But, I think letting that be more a matter of personal conviction along with some metaphors (such as Vinland being a kind of heaven) kind of works better, and avoids a story that already has to toe the line on preachiness from tipping too far into that.
Season 2 mostly suffers from slow pacing and no meaningful content (and no, I'm not talking about the lack of action. I dont care about acton in the first place) By "no meaningful content", I'm referring to the repetitive story beats of "slavery is bad, war bad, violence bad". Its definitely a good message, but I feel as though the show didn't really do enough to get me invested.

Amazing video
That half second "days without rayman" gag made me feel empty inside.

I liked the farming better than the fighting.
I remember animation being mostly beater in this season.
