I'd like to again apologise for the state of the video. I figured, hopefully correctly, that a blurred, watermark-marred video would be preferable to no video at all. Trust me, I'm just as frustrated as you are. Hopefully I won't have to do this again, but, you know... UA-cam.

Still enjoying the video, I got used to it after 5 min, personally I don’t really mind. Though it must be annoying after all that editing to have to put that watermark.
Hope you find a more convenient solution in the future !

Despite youtube’s best intentions, you continue to produce some of most eloquent, thorough, and well produced anime content on the platform. Your first MiA review is what convinced me to see the show, and I’m happy to see you survived the sequel as well. Thanks for helping the rest of us process this one-of-a-kind film that I, too, don’t plan on seeing twice.

Despite how generally sensitive and unacquainted I was with body horror going into the series, I’ve somehow watched both the 1st season and movie twice..now going on 3 times since I’m going along with my brother on his watch journey…which soon means I’ll be seeing this movie a 3rd time.
Lord knows how I’ve managed…but I guess at this point I just keep telling myself its in preparation for the 2nd season, and I’m desperately trying to desensitize myself and become numb to it all so I can (hopefully) easier brace for impact when season 2 drops and be ready for whatever horrors are to come with that.
      Either that-or I’m becoming just a masochist.

Don't worry about the overlay image. The brain easily tunes it out after a few seconds since most of us are focusing on what you're saying rather than the video itself.
Also, start streaming already, will ya. UA-cam? Twitch? I don't care, just do it!

    I watched it.
I must be a glutton for punishment because I watched it twice and despite the gut wrenching torment it put me through, I loved it anyway.
That last bit about continuing on reminds me of one of the quotes in the movie itself.
“The Flower of Dawn wilts at noon, but you must press onward.”

If I may attempt to win you back on Dorohedoro, the face thing is more to set the mood than anything. She gets healed with magic just so you know. The casual brutality is both used for dark comedy and also... it's just how the world is. The residents of Hole are naturally preyed upon by the mages but the mages themselves prey upon each other as the natural hierarchy that comes with different levels of power with magic.
    Anyway, great review as always.

How interesting. Your view on Made in Abyss is quite intriguing, mostly because it differs so much from mine. Your views on the storytelling as well as the tone of the show and how you seem to be both utterly disgusted with it while at the same time drawn to it is ironically similar to your constant statements of the Abyss itself as you yourself say it: "I hope you're not getting sick of me saying it's one thing and then saying it's the complete opposite of that thing". You seem to see the Abyss as the antagonist of the series, and while that may have some merit to it, I also think its worth contemplating what kind of life our characters would realistically have (if any life at all) if the Abyss didn't exist. Nanachi was born in the slums and grew up eating trash and avoiding shady alleyways that held potentially dangerous people all while having the drive to keep going as a RESULT of the map of the abyss she held. It's possible that she would have likely died there had she not been selected by 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐝 which is a fact that she herself on multiple occasions heavily hints towards in the manga of Made in Abyss. Riko herself was born stillborn and was revived using a special-grade relic that kept her safe from the strains of the Abyss's layers. If she had been born out of the Abyss would she still have been stillborn? Or would she simply been a fine, healthy, young baby? There is no way to prove which hypothesis is correct. All that is known is that Riko has the Abyss to thank for her continued life (for better or for worse). Prushka is the daughter of one of the Umbra Hands (the loyal followers of 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐝) and thus she herself was unknowingly brought into existence as a result of one of the Umbra Hands meeting a woman (who most likely was a cave raider of the Abyss herself) thus its completely possible that the circumstances that brought the mysterious Umbra Hand of Prushka and this unnamed female together was solely a result of the Abyss. Finally Reg is a undeniable byproduct of the Abyss itself and his existence is absolutely unseparable from it, which the series itself tries to constantly reaffirm by having all of the characters around him call Reg a "Aubade" [A Supreme Treasure of the Netherworld] thus is it 100% fact that if the Abyss didn't exist, neither would Reg. All of the characters have a connection to the Abyss that is undeniably a vital piece of their existence as a whole and despite their hardships and complications in navigating it their determination to pursue further is what gave them purpose to move forward in this seemingly purposeless world. The Abyss is by far the most horrid thing that could have happened to our protaginists and without it a lot of people's lives would be off for the better, but without it the characters whom we know and love would without all doubt... simply not exist at all.

I only saw this recently after putting it off for so long and I found it actually hit harder than the series in many ways. Made in Abyss and this movie, alongside Shinsekai Yori, are the only anime titles I intend to purchase the blu-ray of. I would have liked the review to go a little deeper into it, but I get that that would require more delving into specific plot points. It's a shame the overlay is necessary. Hopefully UA-cam walks back some things in the future and, perhaps if there is an older edit of the visuals, it could be reuploaded?

I think the feeling I got during and after watching MiA is that of pure morbid curiosity. After episode 10 I realized that this is all only gonna get worse, but despite my very real trauma of having broken one of my bones and living the pain Riko went through, I could not look away. MiA makes you both absolutely terrified and absolutely invested.
And now, to think that the next season promises to be even worse. I don't want to see what horrible things happen, but my curiosity won't let me give up. Which I feel like that's the point MiA makes, the viewer is descending into the Abyss too. Just like Riko and Reg, we've had the option to stop, but we keep going, and eventually reach a point of no return, where one becomes too invested to stop despite the sheer terror of what is and will come.

Many sequels and movies have turned out to be disappointing, so it just blew my mind how good Dawn of the Deep Soul is. It felt like watching Made in Abyss for the first time again, something no other show has managed to do for me yet. For several days it was all I could think of.

I fucking adore this show because it is utterly miserable and depressing yet is also so incredibly beautiful and rewarding. It's pretty much an exaggeration of how our real world is. Sure, it is full of suffering and anguish, but damn those waterfalls are pretty, and isn't that person so lovely.

I loved your review of the first season, its one of my favorite made in abyss videos. I actually played cave story because of your reg and quote comparison which I found to be quite accurate. Judging by how you shared your experience of watching the movie, I assume you will have mixed feelings about the fact that there will be another sequel to the series. Which believe it or not actually gets worse in the next arc.

I really love how Made in abyss handles it's themes, it's music and it's horror; But sometimes i feel Akihito can only write children either as "determined" or "Horny." I mean for a series so invested with it's themes of growing up and maturing, the main cast rarely stops to question the implications of the system they grew up in: "This bondrewd guy, who is presented as hero for my home town is a capital M Monster! Well this doesn't paint the whole system that groomed me in in a different light; not at all! lets talk about our pee-pee's!"
Anyway 9/10 it can only go downhill from here ;(
Thank you for the review, i didn't find the watermark wasn't bothersome at all. The new guidelines sound like they really suck!

This anime is the realisation of the term "but we move forward nonetheless". I'm fully agreeing with you that the mental state it puts most into is questionable, but it's a powerful vessel to keep the story going. I'm going to watch everything MiA has to offer, reluctantly, but anxious for the final outcome. This better have a happy ending, or there's a lot of folks that are going to spiral into depression. And not just the neon-genesis-evangelion-3-weeks-of-sorrow kind of depression.

Good review, I found this film kind of frustrating. There were a lot of plot holes and character inconsistencies that weren't present in the series. I was left with a lot of questions when I finished watching it, but they weren't the good kind of questions, they were questions asking how certain events in the film made any sense at all. I still thought it was a good film overall, but I do think it was a noticeable dip in quality from the series (though from every review I've seen I seem to be in the minority in having this opinion).

FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT. Okay, I’m a fan of all these plot points and characters they have going in this movie, but this movie had wayyy too much going on in it for it to be properly fleshed out.
This movie honestly should have been a whole other season or at least half of a season long, because while it was beautiful in animation, music, and story, it felt so so rushed to me. I found myself constantly looking at how much time was left after every major bombshell in the movie was dropped. It felt like there were too many new concepts being introduced all at once, and as a result, I didn’t get the same impact from them if this had been fleshed out in a season 2.

  • @yurkdawg

Wow excellent review! I'm trying to understand why I love this show so much while I unironically and completely dislike some of its attributes.
I once read [horribly paraphrased] that "True wisdom is seeing the truth while simultaneously holding two completely contradictory/paradoxical ideas."
It seems that lately the shows/books/etc that interest me the most do not simply show compelling themes, but give even more insight by demonstrating a dichotomy of two seemingly paradoxical themes. Anime in particular often wrestles with the "hope/despair" duality. This show, with its "blessings and curses" takes that dual insight even further by exploring every apparent opposing concepts and emotions to the nth degree.
(I apologize it is difficult to express this in mere words. Perhaps that is why long complex works that tackle these difficult concepts are so compelling to me...)

I read the manga after watching the TV series way back when so I knew when going into this film that a lot of the subject matters and the way the author portrays his characters becomes increasingly.... problematic.
Now don't get me wrong, it's still a good series. Just... be warned it is extremely grim dark to the point of absurdity and that only escalates as things go on.
