i refuse to play hoi4 becouse hoi3 has good maps. and you know i like my maps like my woman, 2D and full of details.
Oh hell yeah. Complex, hard to learn, hard to understand, but once you understand - god damn is it a good ol' time
@James Moody I'd say I need to learn how to play it first ahaha. But that could be really cool actually!

Yeah!!! Screw Real 3d Women!!!!
thank you for this video. i am coming from hoi4 and wanted to try 3, needed a video exacly like yours. greeting
Appreciate that my man!
Same here.
I play HOI 3 because my pc won't run HOI 4
E Matei Blin lol same
Same and mine still lags any solutions to that?
:d ONE MORE HERE.
Im trying to learn how to play this game bc hoi4 is just too much for my poor laptop
Same I know
What the f are these boxes and all these numbers... lol. Exactly how I felt when i bought it on sale 2 years ago and largely unplayed. I'm an EU, Victoria and crusader kings veteran, but found this game infuriatingly complex. Thanks for this comprehensive guide.
It can certainly be confusing starting out but it's a game you can play for 1000 hours and still be learning things and having fun with it!
Check Niehorster dialect for to understand unit types in the game, although they are self explanatory in the game itself.
thanks for this tutorial on Hearts of Iron 3, specially about Counters, atleast i know what to do, to be able to have a better representation of the units, not those boring boxes
This is the one and only hoi3 tutorial you'll ever need, all the rest just ramble and fluff. Just getting back into hoi 3 and taking baby steps.thanks very much!!😀😀😀😀😀
Thank you for such kind feedback :)!
Dude i wish i actually found this video waaay back when i started playing Hoi3 cuz i've been playing Hoi3 for almost a year and I still found this video reaally helpful
Glad to hear so dude! Hoi3 is one of those games you never really get perfect at playing. I'm still learning after first trying it in early 2013.
Me : This game is lot more complex to manage than HOI4, you normie!
Also me : [always set the equipment production on automatic]
Ah yes, mAnAwGMeNT.
Why set it to automatic ; _ ;!?
@@Engeri I'm kidding, in fact I never played to this game and I will be able to play to HOI3 in only 3 months, but I doesn't seem that complex with the way you you've explained it in your video, good job by the way because I saw the entire video and didn't feel lost or bored at any moment
I always wanted a really complicated grand strategy game but even EUIV or Men of war assault squad didn't cut it. I really like this game now, it was collecting dust in my brother's old account he lended me and I wanted to pick it up. Thanks for the tutorial.
You're very welcome, and I certainly think it will be complicated enough!
Hey, I was looking for some HoI III tutorial, since I became a bit disappointed of HoI IV, and I have this game a couple of years on my Steam library, catching dust and all of that, so I said to myself: Now, you're going to learn this game! Googled for some tutorial and found yours. Awesome work, my dude. I always enjoyed Darkest Hour (A HoI II mod) and looking at this game a bit, it's not that different when you compare them.
So, let's play! And I hope to someday play a MP game with you. Take care!
Oh i've played many a grand strategy game and the UI on this had me sobbing.
I have 736 hours on hoi4, and I really enjoy it, but hoi3 looks great but also much more complex(part of the reason it looks great tbh)so thanks for this.
Thanks very much for such awesome feedback :). Hope you try out HOi3!

HOI4 finally convinced me to stop purchasing Paradox new games. Basically, in a nutshell, they are designed for DLC money grubbing and NEVER bother to support/improve any AI worth a crap in the newer games.
CK 3 is nice though :) from their newer games...
You are a good teacher, you really put yourself in the shoes of a new player.
Thank you very much
Thank you for this video, I'm fairly decent at Ck2, Victoria 2 and Eu4 but this game was confusing to start playing.
Yeah it can be a bit much. But being good at other Paradox games are definitely a huge advantage though
damh broah...i wanted to play this game for so long, but there are so many tutorials out there that are more confusing, and u make it look easy. I did not by the game because of that, but now....shiiiit, gotta hook my self up with some hoI3. Keep up the goof work, and thax! God bless
Thank you so much man, highly appreciated!
I tried this game years ago but I think I was intimidated by the complexity and just dropped it, gonna try it again today. Good tutorial btw, you really know how to explain stuff
Hey! Much appreciated. If anything is unclear let me know, I'll be more than happy to respond!
I have a head ache trying to remember all that, but thanks it’s a good start to playing this game!
Thanks for the tutorial. I come from a StarCraft Brood War background and I knew this was the game for me when I saw people saying the same stuff about HoI3 in relation to HoI4 as BW players have said about SC2. Old is gold.
Thanks for the cool comment man, made my day.
Going to watch it today. Glad you have made this movie!
Thanks my man! Hope you enjoyed!
Hey thanks for the guide man! It was really really informative and helpful.
Thanks for the kind feedback :)
I tried getting into this one, failed, got HOI IV a year later, and got into that one. Now I'm hoping to finally learn this colossal flustercuck once again lol.
Hearts of Iron 3 is far more complicated, but for long-term playability it has more to offer generally speaking. The multiplayer aspect is to be fair better in Hearts of Iron 4 though.
@@Engeri my thoughts essentially. I do like the command structure mechanic though, even if it gets a bit confusing once war starts. With that they had an ai mode where they try to move in range of units. At least I don't think they have one.
Thanks..just watching now..played HOI2 for years...bought this on release and it was so unpolished I shelved it...now I want to play
This is going to be my first Paradox game. Very excited
did you make it?
This video literally got me into HOI3 lol
Every single year, i try this game and i go back to HoI IV. I hope this one will help me.
Thank you, I bought hoi3 awhile back and it's hard to get into XD I've played hoi4 and vic2 and hoi2 (darkest hour) so it's not like I'm a complete stranger to this type of game
Thx for the tutorial man! I really love grand strategy games and history so being able to play this is really fun, so once again really appreciate this.
( Luxemburg didn't stand a chance)
Glad you enjoy it! :D
thanks for this tutorial, specially about Counters, atleast i know what to do, to be able to have a better representation of the units, not those boring boxes

Thanks man. :)
My first Paradox game that got me into history. A fantastic time.
i am pulling some friends into hoi3 and i ll show them your tutorial (ish)
Thanks man this helped a lot
Glad it helped :)
To be fair about HoI3 DLCs, there are only 3 major expansions you need, which is like 20 dollars (and usually are on sale). The other DLCs are cosmetic like sprites or music.
You can get the complete edition of hoi3 including all dlcs for around $3 on G2A like in the start of the video. The hoi4 is so atrocious that people will simply skip them outright like the recent "La resistance"
@Edoardo Quarta why did u do that :(? They complete edition sells for $1 on G2A
@Edoardo Quarta ah gotcha. I mentioned it in the video though :) always look at third party websites, they often sell really cheap keys for steam games
Great tutorial! I am having trouble not going bankrupt/ not going out of materials. Any tips on how to avoid this problem?
Honestly this should be nearly impossible. The AI in Hearts of Iron 3 will basically just throw everything it needs at you. Try producing more supplies, and sell it to the AI. That way you can buy as many resources as you want.
Watched your tutorial profoundly (thank you for the good illustration) but here are my questions:
Why does my user interface look different to yours? I bought HoI III and it was automaticly updated by steam to the newest version but it looks different to your version.
Example: In the intelligence window I do not have traffic light symbols to change the behavior of the spys but I do have boxes with tick marks.
Other example: I have no lines between HQ and their subordinated units. Same in the HoI III manual the UI looks different than in your video.
Do you use a modification?
Thanks man, the reason your UI probably looks a bit different is because of what DLC you're running. Hearts of Iron 3 has a bunch of different DLC content such as Their Finest Hour and For the Motherland. Depending on which one you bought, the UI might look a bit different. If you have no DLC, it will look even more different. You can get all the DLC by buying them sparately or the Complete Edition on Steam. The lines between Divisions and HQ units should still be there though!
Hi Engari new player ,got the game and all the DLC from stream ,Im enjoying your feature on this game so thanks!! Not been thru MP yet ,already got me excited in the product.I have a friend another experianced board and tabletop gamer and Ive heard you call MP" jangly!!".In your view could we play MP without to much hassle and more importantly would we enjoy? Can we play cooperatively as seperate small countries or just fight a war between our 2 minor countries ??.looking to get a learning experiance before tying larger countries /empires .what are the issues with MP?...cheers Paul
I think it might be the way the game is formatted but I hate how small the tabs were in the UA-cam video. It made seeing what you were doing a lot harder
Are you watching the video on mobile by any chance? I've never struggled to see the tabs when in wide-mode on UA-cam with a regular display. Next time I can zoom in on the cursor when I click on stuff :)
@@Engeri Thank you I'll try watching it on a laptop next time. I was watching on mobile because I wanted to test the stuff you said on my laptop.

Thanks for watching chief, and thanks for the nice comment!
Although I did lose to yugoslavia I learnt a lot from this tutorial so thanks!

What kind of version are you playing in this video? I play as Sovjet Union and as you can guess, it is a big big frontline to overlook. But i cant find the theatres
Hey sorry for the 2 month response time. This is their finest hour, the newest DLC for hoi3.
Great tutorial!
Thank you! Cheers!

this is very helpful it actually more understandable than the little man with a mustache in the tutorial section which is 55%bed time story
Thanks man, appreciate it.
Im actualy gratefull for your video.I assume that your guide is much more better, than russian ones. Go on !!!
Thanks very much man, I appreciate it :)
After some experience with HoI4 and if you are on a buget, you can pick up the Black Ice mod. Totally brutal mod, very hard to master. It makes the game 15x harder. The only downside of the mod is that it forces you to play very historical, which can get boring after a while.
Quick question, compared to other paradox grand strategy games (excluding HOI4), is this game harder?
All in all I'd say hoi3 are one of the harder ones, but the Victoria titles are the king of "steep learning curves" in paradox games. Heck maybe even all games!
Thanks for the vid
I am having struggles opening the cheats tab to turn of neutrality i am pressing the alt 1 2 numpad and it’s just not opening

Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you sir
No worries, glad it helped!
I dont know if anyone reads these but how many troops can you have on one province? Is there a weight limit and does infrastructure affect it in some way?
Hi! Yeah I read basically all the comments I get.
As you wrote yourself, the infrastructure is the limiting factor to how many troops can stay in a given province. Try using the supply mapmode, that will give you some more details if you are low on supply. Keep in mind that HOI3 also has two game modes related to supply. Normal mode distributes supplies manually from your capital, and in Arcade its just subtracted from your stockpile.
So if you want higher supply in your divisions, make sure the infrastructure is up to par, and try using the supply mapmode. Hope this helps!
@@Engeri thanks man, I think I can work with this 👍
good video! It was automatically translated into Korean and it was difficult due to the uneven interpretation, but I could guess it with words.
I'm glad my video was of use to you! Much of luck playing the game :)
This was 2 years ago before like 2/3 of the DLC's including man the guns so I don't blame him
Off topic 15:50 the melody of James Bay's Hold Back The River Melody 5 years before the song came out.
This game is good to show a view of my Coming KingDome
How do I know if my DLC's work?
I have them all, but mainly I want to know if:
semper fi
for the motherland
their finest hour
works as they should
You should be able to see that when you launch the game, it will tell you if you have them working or not. If it says Hearts of Iron 3: For the Motherland in the menu it will be working. It should also appear in the launcher.
I finally learn, after many years, how to play at HOI
Glad to hear I could help man :)
Thank you now i don't have to pay 40 euro but only 10 for better game
Glad to help man! If you're looking for Multiplayer, Hoi4 is still probably the better choice but hoi3 is such a dank experience.
I'd love to play the game; too bad it crashes when I try to use tfh. Has anyone ever made it work, reliably? [It had worked for a small amount of time and now nothing works.]
I've never heard about these kinds of issues, however you can find a patched hoi4tfh.exe file by googling online. That will also make mod support way better.
Do you know how can i change ideology of countries manually ? like turning soviets to fascist or germany to commie ?

Victoria 2 is awesome and Vic3 is coming
I heard so much hype about Hearts of Iron 4 so I evenentually bought it. I liked it, but yeah it wasnt that good. Especially if you don't have any DLC or Mods, its very lackluster. Never played 3, but it looks much better, I plan on getting it soon.
Hearts of Iron 4 has some advantages. It's easily moddable, Multiplayer works without the use of Hamachi or other tools. It is however exactly like you said, a super mega DLC game where content is added as DLC no matter how barebone the base game is. Mods make up for most of it though.
Hearts of Iron 3 is more of a challenge, its harder to learn and harder to master - but once you pull though I think it can give some real long term enjoyment.
Black Ice for Hearts of iron 3 also makes things a little more interesting. (it's a historical mod)
Thank you For the tutorial! I'm still confused on resupplying units which are further in enemy territory? Any help?
You are most likely suffering attrition due to bad infrastructure or perhaps bad fuel due to a lack of fuel production
@@Engeri Thanks this will come in handy in the north african campaign
how does it work to make supply lines? just make infrastructure right?
Yes, supply lines are only infrastructure. Obviously you also need supplies. If you're doing a arcade game you only need supply in your pool, not actual supply lines
@@Engeri will try. do you suggest me to buy hoi 3 or 4? as person who never played both of them
@@Leverquin I mean hoi4 is a lot easier to learn and has multiplayer. Unless you're a paradox/grand strategy fan, hoi3 is very VERY hard to learn and people tend to get frustrated by it. Get hoi4 for cheap on g2a.com. if you like hoi4 and want a more hardcore experience pick up hoi3 next!
I would like it if they added HQ units in hoi4, as well as being able to modify the military hierarchy structure. It should also be possible to execute Generals and it should also be possible for them to be captured or killed by the enemy. Also the resource food should be added, civilians should be able to die during invasions and bombings (reduction of population in states), and there should be a count of civilians deaths. I would also like that casualties differentiate between killed and captured. Because if you defeat a nation that holds many of your soldiers captured you should get them back in the manpower pool or as civilians. You should be able to decide how to treat POWs too.
Another thing. I don't understand when I play as Germany that I never need to trade any steel, except in the end when I make 1000 infantry equipment per day. One big part of the war is that Germany needed Swedish steel and that was one of the reasons why they invaded Norway. But not in hoi4 so I don't bother invading Norway until I research atom bombs. The UK also never invades Scandinavia.
I would like to see separate peaces and the possibility to sign a peace with a major nation without unconditional surrender. For example if Germany defeats the USSR and the UK. Now there is only the USA left in the war. In order for Germany or USA to win the war they have to sacrifice many men and it might take years. They should be able to make peace with each other. It should also be possible to peace out the UK during the blitz and with submarines. I have never figured out how to use subs without getting them all sunk withing 2 weeks but it might be possible. But let's say that you successfully sink most British convoys and annihilate their air force, you should be able to peace them out after some time. I don't see any real effects from winter either.
And peace deals. I think they are fine in hoi4 but I would like one improvement. Before it starts (it could even be before the war) each nation picks each state that they want, if they want to puppet a country etc. Then during the peace deal you will choose as it currently is with one exception. If you pick a state that another country wants they can protest by spending some of their own participation points. You can either back down (you can not pick the state in this round or the next), or you can spend more participation points and take it anyway. This will worsen the relations between the two nations.
Finally once the world war is over the world tension should go down and there should be an event addressing it.
Best tutorial ever! coming from HOI4. This sums it all up. short and easy, not intimidating
Glad it helped!
i really need to know one thing about this game, hope anyone will reply, is it possible to send military hardware and or troops to other countries to make wars tru another nation possible? without fighting yourself? can you have a impact on the world like that too?
in short are proxy wars possible. can you get other ai countries fight eachother while aiding 1 side? but without sending your own troops under your flag?
Hi!
Yeah you can send supplies to another country by trade, or by directly giving them lend-lease (offer lend lease under diplomacy)
Getting an AI to fight another is very tricky however.
@@Engeri im aware y can send supplies tho, i more of meant that can you send countries troops, planes ships or hardware.

Just 10 years late to the party!
can you actualy puppet nations in this game
Yeah, there is a puppeting option in HOI3 instead of choosing "conquer" when declaring war.
Me buys HOI3 to look OG: Hmmm yes let's make this UsEfUlL!
I am playing hoi4 do you think it would be difficult to learn hoi3
Something being difficult is subjective, but either way it does have a learning curve to it. But take it as a challenge you can have some real fun with it!
Having never played any hearts of iron games and trying to play hoi4 how can you call it simplified? It’s too complex at least for me. I have a job and don’t get days off in a row so I can’t play games that require hundreds of hours just to master.
I totally get that, and that IS the main reason why Hearts of Iron 4 is so popular in comparison to Hearts of Iron 3. However, in the process of gross over simplification Paradox (developers) have removed a lot of what the old-school fans found to be fun in the game.
The complex support structure, HQ system and more is the reason it is just a lot less fun than Hearts of Iron 3.
If you want to experience a bit of both, try the HOI4 mod called Black ICE Historical Accuracy.
It combines the best of both worlds.
do you still recommend hoi3?
Absolutely. Get the complete edition on a reseller website, and try some mods. its a good time :)
If only I was a starter... this video still helped me with a few things and I have 50+ hours and I’ve only had the game for a week
PS: I had 500+ hours on my other account, that I haven’t been able to recover or find anymore
@@theswedishmilk2051 Glad to hear I was able to give some help. A fantastic game really, shame Hearts of Iron 4 is so simplified
@@Engeri there are actually mods in hearts of iron 4 which gives game a more narrative tone and some cool mechanics + way a lot content
@@hasanyrom9055 Sure, there are mods like Black ICE which makes the game a lot more complex and interesting, but nothing that can replicate Hearts of Iron 3 to any lengthy extent.
@@Engeri i just tried to play hoi3 as hungary after watching your tutorial and i just gained free land via decisions but when germany invaded USSR we advanced till kiev and after that soviets just obliterated my small 12 division army and then i tried to resist them at budapest but i just surrendered bcz of my national unity i didn't even notive what was going on it was so fast and there were pop ups everywhere im not going to play hoi3 again lol
I can’t get over how you pronounce espionage
I love that people still trigger on that. Happy to report I've now learned to pronounce it correctly :)
But on occasion I'll say it wrong just to annoy.
Coming from victoria 2, it doesnt seem that hard for me, half of the things are very similar to vicky2.
Yeah as a victoria 2 player you've got a HUGE advantage in most grand strategy game. It's way worse if you only play hoi4, and then try to play hoi3. Totally different games really. Consider yourself lucky!
@@Engeri i tried hoi4 and it was super confusing, there are things that dont make sense. There is no money in hoi4? It has a weird trading system with civilian factories if i remember correctly.

have you ever played darkest hour a hearts of iron game
Tried it a little, seems decent but I enjoy hoi3 and 4 quite a bit more
@@Engeri wow that was quick. i kinda want to try it because there is WWI start date.
@@Leverquin Go for it! Look for the game on G2A.com or something similar. I'm sure you can get it cheap
I want to learn how to play hoi3 because even getting spanked as Germany, just for destroying 3 french divisions in an encirclement already felt like being a badass general and not just like hoi4 that feels like you only clicks a button and waits for a possible victory
Btw there's the manpower thing,hoi4 the divisions are automatically reinforced until the country's manpower erase, while this,in hoi3 there's time where the reinforcements train and get ready, and finally start moving to the front,so this kinda difficults it
The only thing i didn't like about the game is,the whole world is correct, beatiful (and i know nobody played these countries ever)Canada's HUGE but still, acceptable, now there's South America...which i guess....have been hit by a baseball bat for over four hours
Haha 😂 exactly what I'm thinking. "What the fuck is this!? "
there should be 2 tutorials
1 for grand strategy noobs who really shouldn't start grand strategy by playing HOI3
1 for people who've played paradox games before and don't need to be spoonfed on how to move their units and change time
Yeah thats a good point, absolutely agree. The problem is that often unit movement and stuff is not necessarily similar to other Paradox games, so I put in sections that you can skip to by using the timestamps bellow instead :-)
I'm playing as Britain I want to do d day on Germany but don't know how anyone pls help
You need to produce transport ships. Then you need troops that are the correct weight to be loaded on said transport ships. Then you put that transport ship, and the troop in a naval port. Finally, select your infantry unit. It should have a little arrow in the unit info that allows you to load it directly on ships. It has a green icon, should stand out to you :)
@@Engeri thank you so much I'm already outside Paris with my 80 divisions (alot)! not possible without your help.
one question would it have been better to do it when barborossa started since more troops to eastern front etc.
@@HansWW2.
Yes absolutely- They would have more troops facing east than normal during Barbarossa. Fighting a two front war is what literally killed Germany in WW2.
