    They don't need a lot of protection. I took some boxwood cuttings last summer and overwintered them in the ground with no protection except the snow pack right here in Eastern Ontario. Zero mortality rate.

    The property I am rehabbing has some very old shrubs not sure their name but overtook all the sidewalks and the dirt as well but someone trimmed the sides and its all hard wood that stabs you. So I had a bag of trimmings from my own boxwoods. And was like I wonder if these propagate I didn’t trim the tops like you shared but I did strip a bunch with softer stems and was able to get 30 to grow without any special setup just stuck em in a compost potting mix in egg cartons I used skewers and wrapped in saran wrap with a taped on lid so I can spray as needed. Yes I did it on an idea but have some nice boxwoods to replace these huge nasty aged bushes. Once the owner comes to visit I hope she will be impressed. I learned alot from this vid. Especially about the spacing at planting time. And I was glad I took free clippings and recycled them to solve another yard problem. But I'll be more successful applying your method. I could have had 120 versus 30.

    Love this video! I’m going to definitely try it. I just have three concerns/questions: 1) Why did you contaminate the whole rooting hormone container and not put it on another container. 2) How come you didn’t talk about nodes? 3) Is it important to take more leaves off and leave the last two or last set on the top to make sure the plant focuses its energy more on root growth rather than creating leaves? Or no? Thanks for your time! I’ve learned from other videos, so I might be wrong. Hopefully you inform me! 😊

    • @DeesYard
      @DeesYard  4 місяці тому

      Thank you!! I'm just a hobbyist/backyard gardener, but here are my honest answers: 1) I live on the edge. 😆 you're 100% correct it's best to use a separate container.
      2) Good question, I don't remember why? I do think that's an important talking point, but not so much with boxwood since there are a ton. More important with plants with fewer nodes.
      3) I don't know the science behind it, but I've been taught to leave at least 1 leaf prior to sticking any cutting. Every plant has a different structure. For example, I know I can get away with a bunch of small leaf nodes like boxwood but when sticking a panicle hydrangea, the leaf structure is too far apart and too big, I have to reduce the foilage. (This is mainly needed for space when sticking a bunch of cuttings) Hopefully, this makes sense.

    Hello Dee. What planting zone are you in? I am in 6B and really want to try your method. If I take cuttings now, and then pot them up in the fall as you did, would putting them in my unheated garage under grow lights in the winter be ok do to? They would get some natural light from skylights also - and the garage typically doesn’t get below 40 in the winter. Or do you think they need to stay outdoors? I live in the mountains of NC and we get snow, sometimes ice, and temps can dip to single digits sometimes. Thanks so much.

    That’s not bad even with a day job if you saved $0.50 each day in two years you’d have enough to buy bigger plants.
