I just bought the $349 SELF-PROPELLED model at Harbor Freight for $199 (good timing, it had come back from the Distribution Center and was brand-new in the box). I'm actually pleasantly shocked. It tore through 300sq ft of my neighbor's 2-3ft tall Japanese stiltgrass (microstegium vimineum) without a hitch, EVEN at full throttle (which seemed counter-intuitive but I'm up for a challenge since the manager said I have 5 days to return it). Loved the sound when the machine went into turbo mode-you know this tiger is ready to work! It mulched well without a bag, then I collected a full bag every 2 passes (the stiltgrass hadn't been cut in a while so it really filled the bag up quick). The self-propulsion took some getting used to, but I'm thrilled with this workhorse.
I own a Greenworks and I swear they come out of the same factory. Mines a 40v self propelled & 2 seasons of cutting I love it. Basicly the same machine, once you use a cordless, you'll never go back to gas. When my greenworks dies, I get one of these.
Yeah I’m mowing 2acres I need the exercise.parked my ex mark zero turn for this. This grass for the first mowing is think spots 8 inches and thin in others not to mention the horse apples. This machine IS AWESOME
Thanks a ton for talking about the self-propelled functionality. Stuff like that makes a BIG difference. I owned a Toro gas mower for a long time with the "Personal Pace" self-propelled functionality - which is variable. I never thought about how important that was but it was a natural process. As you stopped to turn, it stopped propelling. And I could do all of that with one hand while I wipe sweat from my brow. It's the little things about how you'll actually use it that make all of the difference. The EGO appears to be a great mower but I suspect it will also have a similar issue. You pick a speed and it's using levers. I've started looking at the Toro cordless mower now which also has the Personal Pace feature. May very well end up going with Toro again. Thanks again for the detailed thoughts / feedback.
Thanks for the review! This video helped me decide. The Rear drive and inconvenient activation of the self propelled was the deciding factor. Thanks again!
I got a selfpropelled Atlas mower for fathers day 2020, I think its awesome. Very quiet. New blade on dry grass, for a normal weekly cut was superb. Nice even, clean cut. Takes me about 25min to mow my front yard with a 3.5hp gas mower, same time with propelled Atlas, I used 1 bar out of 4 on the batt. Todays cut will take more as its higher and wetter - it wont stop raining, day 9 now, it might be dry enough later to mow.
Right now 5/10/22 the self is $349 and non is only $179! Thanks for saving me a ton of money. Also save $30 instantly when buying with charger and battery at same time in store only.
Thanks for the video. I suggest that you tweak/bend the handle for the self propel engagement. Just bend it up until the feathering is right for you. Obviously do it right and remove it first, or use the proper tools so you don't ruin attached components. Secondly, they have a coupon out right now for mower, battery and charger $319.00.
@Sola Fide goto website and pull up the "flyer", it will be in there. But its wrong, its a free fast charger($59) if you order online. In store its fubar'd and you basically get $30 off, same as the july 2020 store special.
Yep, I used that coupon to get mine! It was a no brainer for all that for just the price of the mower. I am more impressed with it than I thought I would be!
@@mrdmdstar Same here. Manager had to do creative keying, and I got the deal. Well worth it for HF, too: I also got the 80v trimmer and 40v chainsaw, and three additional batteries.
Agreed on awkward SP control bar, and advantage of front wheel drive over RWD on turns! I rigged a momentary pushbutton switch and ziptied it to convenient location on main handle bar. Much more convenient to "let up" with left thumb, approaching a turn, than wrangling with the SP control bar. Just parallel switch to OEM switch, easy mod.
I bought the push Atlas. It picks up all the debris when you take the block out of the back before applying the bag. The manager says to use only one battery at a time not both together. They're excellent for small yards.
Thank you! Those cons are deal breakers for me... Not having enough suction to pick up miscellaneous debris like leaves and the difficulty with the self propel system and turning at the same time, too many other choices out there to put up with that unless it was hundreds of dollars cheaper than others, which of course it's not.
@@csick11 Your reply has nothing to do with his comment. And gas cost is irrelevant. The difference on a small city lot between $2 and $4 gas is not material. Maybe a dollar a week? Or less.
@Mega Man I agree. living in Texas with Live Oak trees, those small sturdy leaves getting trapped in St. Augustine grass sounds like a nightmare if there isn't enough suction. And teaching my wife (she likes to mow) to disengage the drive every turn. I don't think that's going to happen.
thanks for review.. I would buy push version simply because I get more exercise .. 45 minutes to 1 hour of mowing is as good as a treadmill and I kill 2 birds with one stone
I compared similar types among brands, the batteries were the deal killer, many were outrageously expensive 200-400 for a battery?? I went Atlas. we will see how it holds up.
Interesting review. I appreciate mentioning cons of that mower. Feels like it is working on very tight power control. Most likely because to save battery. 80V 2.5Ah is rather small for 80V mowers. 80V 2.5Ah = 40V 5Ah (as it says on the battery) and it's also the same as two 20V 5Ah batteries connected in series. (80V x 2.5Ah = 40V x 5Ah = 20V x 2 x 5Ah = 200Wh) Running at full power on that battery size would be like initial Dewalt 20Vx2 mower that came with two 5Ah batteries, and it received rather a lot of negative reviews due to short runtime. (Now they include two 9Ah batteries with a bit higher price, and reviews got better) This one has even larger deck than Dewalt, so in order to make longer runtime out of the same amount of energy capacity, they probably had to control power as tight as possible. Maybe it will get bit better with a second battery? It seems to utilize only one battery at a time so it is unlikely, but maybe.
Good review. Thanks for doing one AFTER a few months use. I see your cons as personal preference and not any real problem with the mower or it's design. They would not dissuade me from getting one. However, I just bought a new gas mower, so it will be awhile before I need a new one. An electric mower will be my next one...and they may be down to $50 by then!

To change where in the swing the self propeller activates you can bend the bar up so it's closer to the handle. That wil make it easier to use one handed.
Thanks for the honest review sir. I've been looking at battery operated mowers as I only use mine to trim out the yard, and mow a couple banks that are too steep for a rider. I'm leaning towards the gas mower. I can't see spending money on another battery and electric mower not reliable when things get rough.. Example like grass wet/dew, leafs pickup during autumn season.... I'll pass
If you look at the Atlas and Kobalt 80v Self Propelled mowers side by side, the decks/wheels/handle are identical. Too bad the batteries are so different, HF would have been a nice cheaper source for my 80v Kobalt yard tools.
Actually, Atlas 80V mower looks VERY SIMILAR to GreenWork 40V mower. www.greenworkstools.com/21-inch-self-propelled-mower Maybe HF just tweaked it little bit and released as 80V?
@@steve762us yes most people aren’t smart like you so for example they pay 1k for the John Deere Brand when they could have gotten the Murray brand for 700 dollars less for the same machine different color and brand
FYI, all of the Lynx stuff is now being tagged as "Clearance" on the HF website. My guess is that the 40v & 80v Atlas stuff will replace all of the 40v Lynx. Also, for those of us with inclines in our yard, the rear-drive is essential. So, that's a major plus for some of us.
I would say just buy the ego as it has a better warranty. It comes with a 5 year warranty. The coupon does work online to get $60 off but only with the fast charger. Shipping is $6.99 but no option for the add-on warranty. The warranty is $50 for 2 years. So I paid in store with a $20 coupon all together about $550 with charger and battery. The ego with dual blades was on sale for $550 making it a better value
I'd go with the Ego, or the Dewalt...I already have Dewalt batteries and chargers, but I think even at that the Ego is a better buy. The Dewalt is $400, and requires 2 batteries at a time, the Ego uses 1 at a time which to me is more sensible. The Dewalt uses 2 batteries to achieve 40 volts, the Ego's 1 battery is 56 volts. By far a better idea myself.
Yeah man that throttle bar is a pain in the ass. I guess I took my snapper gas mower for granted. Because it had the variable trigger right there within reach. What I might do is put a bike hand brake lever on the handle and run the cable through to it. Other than that it is a nice mower.
I think of these mowers same was as electric cars. Different tools for different jobs. Use the electric except in the fall when mulching leaves. Use the gas powered car for those longer road trips.
Is it possible to use standard mower blades? Are the specialty ones much more expensive? Also, good insight on the propulsion control. Based on this I'll either get non propelled or one with the "personal pace" option.
I’m not a fan of my Atlas self propelled mower. Granted, I’m only using one battery and my lawn is usually longer than most. I love the 80v atlas trimmer but, the mower lasted, maybe, 15 minutes on medium height and medium speed. I can’t find a second battery anywhere near me. Or else, I’d buy another one just to be sure. Either way, It’s going back next weekend.
Are these harbor freight models about the same reliability as the others? The prices are pretty much inline so it’s not like it’s a “cheap” brand. I’m assuming the quality is pretty good and it should last 7 years or more.
You should of left the check the oil joke as is said stay tuned for a video on that process and moved on as if you weren't joking lmbo !!! May get the Kobalt 80v.
Harbor Freight coupons show up in a variety of ads/flyers. (I have a "collection" of them. I check them, now & then, to throw out the expired ones.) Anyway, the 20% off coupons say they're good on "one single item". So, you probably could have gone back the next day and used another 20% off coupon for the battery and then done the same thing the NEXT day for the charger. (Or maybe it would even be allowable to take your product out to the car and then go right back in to make your next purchase...IDK....or maybe it's a "once per DAY coupon, as well....hmmmm....I'd have to get my magnifying glass out to read all of the fine-print!) Hope this helps you out in the future.
Trying to find a replacement blade. The original blade started “missing” spots causing me to go over the lawn a second time. Husband sharpened it and still doing the same thing. Bought a universal replacement blade. Problem solved. Sort of. New problem is that the fully charged batteries ( 2 80v) ran out real fast. I couldn’t even finish. With the original blade and fully charged batteries i never used more than 2 bars of charge. I’m assuming the new blade is too heavy??? Anyway, since I can’t find any Atlas brand replacements we are going to try the Kobalt. Cross your fingers! Very frustrated.
I have mixed luck with Harbor freight stuff. Their Dremel thing is terrible. But the reciprocating saw is pretty awesome as is the car battery float charger and the full car battery charger. I’m gonna give this a look in the spring
My OCD triggers watching you take those corners. You drop nrearly the whole deck over uncut grass when you turn. I would think you leave a lot of uncut blades in those areas when you do that since it doesn't really get a full pass from the blades. Also that long throw on the self propel is a deal breaker for me. Grew up with John Deer rear wheel drive self-propel. Went out and got a used one for my self as an adult. Having the self propel bar within a finger grasp makes it so easy to feather on and off when going around obstacles. Just relax me fingers to stop and squeeze again to start. Never have to rely on my thumbs to reach for it or let go of the handle with one hand to pull it up back up. Almost wonder if you can bend the bar to get it to sit closer to the handle when in the off position.
I totally fell for the oil comment.haha I thought aw man, battery has oil too?? Lol that is why I'm wanting battery powered, I hate dealing with gas and oil.
I just tried the atlas. I bought self propelled. An the rapid charger. It takes an hour to charge. I thought it was supposed to be shorter time? It cost me 503.00 dollars. For everything.
Bought one last August and it was great. Stored battery inside for winter and went to use it today and it's dead. Hmm I said. Threw it on the charger and won't take a charge. Out of warranty and 110 bucks for the 80v battery. Not looking good so far.
It might be personal preference but I always trim the sidewalk, driveway and weed eat around the fence before I cut the grass other wise I have to go back and pickup what I cut with the weed eater. By trimming first the mower cuts and mulches all the trimmings from around the fence etc etc. Then all I do is blow the small stuff off the drive and sidewalk with my blower.
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
don't get the "rapid charger!" slow "trickle charging" is the way to go just like with cars. it only weighs 64 pounds so it would be ideal for tight areas with wheel power off. i want it for my mom's lawn where i can't use the tractor, but she's suspicious about the cost of the battery, LOL!
Label on Atlas says 1 1/8 to 3 3/4". Height adjustment is effortless & excellent; moving one lever does all four corners simultaneously. You can just about do it with two fingers, it's so easy.
Thanks for the thorough review.... No offense intended, but you need to change the position of your flags... US Flag should be hung so that it is on its own right (viewed as on the left from most prominent view of onlookers, or for example, the US flag should be on the left as viewed from the street, etc). Best regards,
Did you say you could use the coupon on the mower, but not the battery and charger? Also, since I’m a stickler for price, would you suggest I just go for the non self propelled?
Hey Dude. I found the coupon, so thank you for that. Unfortunately, Harbor Freight refused to honor it. Said the coupon has recently been “retracted”. Bummer. That deal was just too good to be true.
More land fill products. China needs to take all this garbage back and fill up their own land fills. And pay for freight as well! Other than that, great video!
I was going to get the Ego. But it only has one battery bay and it is made of plastic. The Atlas is steel, has 2 battery ports, and its batteries work in both 80v and 40v Atlas equipment.
I am so far impressed with the Atlas selfpropelled. It seems very sturdy, metal deck, wheels have steel ball bearings. Bag is metal framed (bag itself may be an issue), handle is metal but not very adjustable.
the greenworks equipment is a much much better deal. harbor fraught is poor value for electric tools as you're about to find out. the lynx stuff is now discontinued. if you bought into it better get some batts quick before they sell out. their 80 volt mower is not a good value. let me explain. you spend $320 on the mower, $110 on the battery which is only 2.5 ah (200 wh or slightly less) and $30 for a charger that takes 2 hours to charge a battery thats only at 50%. thats $460 and you get a 90 day warranty from a company that has a history of dropping product lines after a few years leaving you high and dry for batteries. a greenworks 80v brushless sp mower is $599. for that you get the mower, a 5 ah (400wh) battery and charger that charges the battery in 1 hour or so. you'll need a second battery with the HF to match what you get with greenworks and now youre at $570 ......with a slow charger and a 90 day warranty. greenworks is 4 years on the whole thing including the battery. already the GW is looking better but that's not the whole story..... ....greenworks has 20 tools in that ecosystem. including a snow blower and a snow shovel for you nawtherners. but thats still not the entire story. Greenworks oems other brands like snapper kobalt and powerworks. depending on what tool or battery you are trying to cross swap the tool or the batteries cases can be modded for cross compatibility. i'm in the 60 volt powerworks/snapper ecosystem. i have one snapper battery and 2 power works batts. yesterday i got 2 green works 60v batts and modded them to fit my snapper/power works stuff (paid 60 bucks for 2 batteries at the habitat thrift store). and finally greenworks has been around for such a long time you can buy knock off green works batteries. I don't know how good any of them are but i doubt they will be of lesser quality than the HF battery.
@@nickabel8279 you didn't read a single thing I wrote did you? You don't have a warranty after day 91 you are oow there is no taking it back to harbor freight and then giving you something for free after 90 days. Actually, Atlas 80V mower looks VERY SIMILAR to GreenWork 40V mower.
www.greenworkstools.com/21-inch-self-propelled-mower
Maybe HF just tweaked it little bit and released as 80V?
@@ksong1496 They're all three, same-same...but different (in terms of little cosmetic tweaks). No doubt all three roll out of same PRC factory.
@@steve762us isn't it crazy we don't realize So many things come out of same factory. Just get different cosmetics.
@@steve762us yes most people aren’t smart like you so for example they pay 1k for the John Deere Brand when they could have gotten the Murray brand for 700 dollars less for the same machine different color and brand
Warren MI here, thanks for the update video. *edit since I typed my comment before watching the entire video... 9:28 LMAO!!!
Hahahaha You got me on the oil part.
Yeah, I got the push one. Was able to use coupon. Total paid $200 with warranty.
So put a loop on the drive bail. Or add a thumb button.
Yeah man that throttle bar is a pain in the ass. I guess I took my snapper gas mower for granted. Because it had the variable trigger right there within reach. What I might do is put a bike hand brake lever on the handle and run the cable through to it. Other than that it is a nice mower.
That sounds like a great work around for that issue.
So this is two years ago, wondering how it is? Are you still using it and has the battery lasted?
I used it for two years then sold it when I moved because I now cut 2 acres of grass
Based on this I'll either get non propelled or one with the "personal pace" option.
they are standard mower blades
That rear wheel drive is a deal breaker for sure
I just got a mower with rwd and I agree it’s so bad compared to fwd. makes a lot of quick turns a real chore to deal with.
You said that you believe Lynx is higher quality than Atlas but they don't even sell Lynx at harbor freight anymore!
I don't think the reliability is bad at all
You should of left the check the oil joke as is said stay tuned for a video on that process and moved on as if you weren't joking lmbo !!! May get the Kobalt 80v.
Came just for the small yard comments!😂😂 Not to bad though
What's really funny is my new house I mow 2 acres and upgraded to the Toro Z Master Commercial
The HF "standard" 20% coupon is excluded for Atlas items.
I've heard rumors that might be made by Greenworks so maybe check out their blades too.
We have a greenworks and I noticed some similarities.
@@kerrieschneider945 Have you check out the Greenworks blades?
I have mixed luck with Harbor freight stuff. Their Dremel thing is terrible. But the reciprocating saw is pretty awesome as is the car battery float charger and the full car battery charger. I’m gonna give this a look in the spring
Which dermel? The cordless one i bought yrs back didn't last but corded i still use n beat up. Been 6 yrs or more
Their clamps are hot trash, but impact sockets and compressors are decent.
Good video told me what I need to know
My OCD triggers watching you take those corners.
I don't have any issues with uncut grass
WOULD YOU SAY IT'S HEAVY LIGHT OR WHAT 🤔
5:18. You’re welcome.
I totally fell for the oil comment.haha I thought aw man, battery has oil too?? Lol that is why I'm wanting battery powered, I hate dealing with gas and oil.
I'm with you. My snowblower is the only thing left on gas
Did you have any problems with the self propel not disengaging when you try to pull the mower backwards?
Yes, everytime. You have to disengage a little before you want to pull it backwards
Ok. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t just mine. Not a huge deal. Just curious
I just tried the atlas. I bought self propelled. An the rapid charger. It takes an hour to charge. I thought it was supposed to be shorter time? It cost me 503.00 dollars. For everything.
I believe the shorter time is on the 40V. On 80V is says around 45 mins.
Where are you venting in this video?
Have you tried the mulching mode on it? Does it have more power when two batteries are in it?
Mulching is ok. Two batteries are not more power
Can we get a quick 2 season update?
Sorry I sold this when I moved to the country
But will it do leaves? if you use it on damp grass does it go up in smoke?
This unit does not have the "suction" effect that a typical mower does so leaves and damp grass would be a wash
Bought one last August and it was great. Stored battery inside for winter and went to use it today and it's dead. Hmm I said. Threw it on the charger and won't take a charge. Out of warranty and 110 bucks for the 80v battery. Not looking good so far.
U never store batteries outside. Always inside. I've had this 2 years and works great on a 1/4 acre. Also says this in manual. STORE INSIDE.
Why trim before you mow? That baby is getting the job done!
That's more like it.
What about the height adjustment??
One lever for all 4 wheels
don't get the "rapid charger!" slow "trickle charging" is the way to go just like with cars. it only weighs 64 pounds so it would be ideal for tight areas with wheel power off. i want it for my mom's lawn where i can't use the tractor, but she's suspicious about the cost of the battery, LOL!
Thx
Will a 40 volt battery work with the lawnmower?
No
Okay thanks.
At what height do you mow ?
In the middle somewhere
A year later, anything to report?
It doesn't pick up leaves. Not so good on tall grass. My battery lasts 45 mins. There are many reports this year that they are only lasting 15 mins.
How low is the lowest cut?
Label on Atlas says 1 1/8 to 3 3/4". Height adjustment is effortless & excellent; moving one lever does all four corners simultaneously. You can just about do it with two fingers, it's so easy.
How much is the extended warranty
I think I paid $60 for 2 years
All the Videos I have seen no one says how long the batteries charge last
Mine is about 45 mins
Thanks for the thorough review.... No offense intended, but you need to change the position of your flags... US Flag should be hung so that it is on its own right (viewed as on the left from most prominent view of onlookers, or for example, the US flag should be on the left as viewed from the street, etc). Best regards,
Did you say you could use the coupon on the mower, but not the battery and charger?
Also, since I’m a stickler for price, would you suggest I just go for the non self propelled?
There is a coupon right now if you buy the mower you get a battery and charger for free
Auto Dad REALLY??? Is the coupon in the store??
Went to the site and didn’t see the coupon.
Hey Dude. I found the coupon, so thank you for that. Unfortunately, Harbor Freight refused to honor it. Said the coupon has recently been “retracted”. Bummer. That deal was just too good to be true.
@@willg8796 in the mailer, or pull up the coupons flyer on the web page.
Lol checking the oil like a tesla owner.
Links?
Rear wheel drive, rwd? No problem. Just lift up the back when turning vs pushing down to lift up front wheels on fwd. Just watch out for your toes.
You can’t be serious.
More land fill products. China needs to take all this garbage back and fill up their own land fills. And pay for freight as well!
Other than that, great video!
Switch your flags. The US flag should be on the left when looking at the door.
Yes I did find that out. We don't actually live there anymore though.
Tall grass and batteries 🔋 don't go together it kills your run time.
Your cutting your grass wrong it hurts my eyes
Buy the e go it's a tank
Warranty on green works? With Hf i just go back to the store and exchange for new
@@nickabel8279 you didn't read a single thing I wrote did you? You don't have a warranty after day 91 you are oow there is no taking it back to harbor freight and then giving you something for free after 90 days. Unless you buy there two year extended warranty and that puts you beyond the price point of a GreenWorks mower and you still don't have the warranty the GreenWorks mower has. Use your head for something other than a hat rack.
