    Hey! Good review, but I have to comment on the two things you were troubled by! Number 1- when my battery ran out, I heard a beep and a click and in less than 2 seconds the other battery had kicked in and I was rolling! The second comment about pulling back the mower. I struggled a little, but by the second time mowing I figured out a technique. Just before you know you're going to pullback let go of the self-propelled handles and give it a little push-pull and it will easily allow it to be pulled backwards. There must be some sort of drive clutch that needs to disengage to free-up the backwards pull.

      Thanks for the response, Peter! I actually got a replacement for this one and now it works like a dream after you get it figured out.

      I experienced this on mine today as well, when using it the first time and found it quite useful when going uphill. If I were in a situation, going uphill, and needed to disengage the self-propelled motors, it would keep the mower from rolling backwards on me.

      I have the 60volt and it does the same thing. I think it is a safety brake kinda, I think if you are pushing it up a hill I think it it would stop it from backing over you if you fell or something.

      It acts like a hill holder. I haveca steep berm along the back.of my yard and it's make it much safer for kids or anyone that could have it roll back. It does have a good dead man as well. Just something to get used to if you feel you done need it. I just take the self propel off a little early.

    I have had 80V self propelled since 2019. That “glitch”, about going self-propelled up a hill with wheels locking, is on mine, too. I just stop self-propelling for a “second” before wanting it to stop. I can then maneuver it any way I want. If it “sticks” I just re-engage the self-propel for “a second” and unengage it, for maneuvers.

    This is a fantastic review of this mower. I just picked it up last night and used it right out of the box. I found the rear wheel locking aspect a little tough at first, but quickly figured out to let the self-propelled lever go and disengage to make turning a breeze. I have the patience of a toddler so I didn't allow both batteries to fully charge. I used the 4 amp battery first to do some test cuts after letting it charge to full in less than 30 minutes. I'll test both batteries later today and see if I have the battery switch issue but as others have said, I don't anticipate it being an issue. Also, both of my batteries charged just fine. Hoping GreenWorks or Costco will get you a new battery at no cost if they haven't already. I mean, they have phenomenal warranties and I'll use and abuse them for the next 8 years and pound at that warranty anytime I need to. FWIW, I chose this one because of the steel deck over a Ryobi crosscut and this one was on sale at Costco for only $499.99 which is a HUGE savings over the Ryobi Crosscut mower. After initial cuts last night, I'm pretty darn happy with this mower and the warranty helps too. Still have a 17 year old John Deere rider (which for my yard size is truly overkill) but you can't deny the maintenance free aspect of a battery powered with this kind of cutting prowess. Time will tell if it's still this good but after about 24 hours, I dig it.

    I bought a Greenworks for $100 off at Tractor Supply. I'm in my 70s. I set it up quickly without help. Charged batteries. Started the mower and it took off!!! I mean really took off fast. I'm doing turtle mode most of the time. It cuts grass well, no issues. I'm getting use to how to turn it. I'm impressed, so now I'm going to buy the weedeater while the sale is still going on at Tractor Supply. Also, it folds up and can be hung on the wall in the garage or shop.

I'm enjoying this mower, never going back to gas, regarding garden equipment.

    I have had the non-self propelled 80v version for 2 years and it works flawlessly. Cleanup is easy. Storing is even easier. Batteries switch automatically but sometimes I use the bigger battery alone just to exercise all of them. One of the extra batteries I bought came with a free inverter. That inverter enabled us to have a small TV and a lamp in the living room during a 36 hour power outage after a storm. I love Greenworks products.

    @TheLawnReview Since the time of this video and my previous reply on your video, I purchased the 80v Greenworks mower with the 4aH battery. I really wanted the Self-Propelled with the 5aH but it was out of stock. About the only real 'negative' comment is that the mower is SO quiet that it can be difficult to know when the mower stops from the battery being dead or if clogged when mulching or bagging if the music in your ear buds are too loud. One of the big plusses however (other than my hearing being saved from not having to crank my music as loud), is the battery charges up fairly quickly, so when mowing my yard (close to an acre) I can swap to one of the 2aH batteries from my trimmer or snow blower and the mower runs just fine while the other is charging. This larger battery will likely be the go-to in the winter in my snow blower as well. I have a shelf in my downstairs study for all of the batteries and charging stations. Honestly, my lawn has never looked this good as my riding mower doesn't have bagging capability, so I ended up using the Greenworks on the entire lawn instead of just the trimming and tight areas.

    Wanted to thank you for your reviews. Just ordered this from Costco. I looked for an affiliate link but couldn't find one - sorry if I missed it. I subscribed and liked. I wanted to get the ego 12 amp from Lowe's but didn't think I'd like the whole Speed IQ control. Plus I couldn't imagine lugging around an 8lbs battery on a trimmer. No way can I justify the Milwaukee's price and I'm not invested in the tool ecosystem. Your review of the mower, trimmer, blower and hedge cutter convinced me this would be a good entry into electric. Coming from a smaller 160 cc Honda. Hoping for a pecan pie and not a drunk uncle! If you try to turn by lifting the front wheels off the ground, while it's still engaged, those rear wheels are still in self propelled mode and will not move, leaving divots. I have found that if I put a hand held hair dryer pointing down at the base and wrap some water heater insulation around it, let it sit for 5-10 minutes WHILE I AM IN THE GARAGE WITH IT. Just used mine for the 1st time this weekend, no battery problems, power source switches over automatically without issue, runs same with one battery with or two for extended runtime installed, reverse too soon after power drive forward is annoying but quickly learned to release power drive sooner before reversing understanding it probably does this to prevent roll back when power drive was used on an incline to assure the operator has control before allowing it to roll backwards. I only briefly used turbo mode, don’t know if there is a timed limit and did t see one in the owners manual. The folding handles are awesome, so easy to use!

    I bought this last summer. I also experienced the failing battery. Greenworks replaced it with no hassle. They didn't even require me to send the defective battery back and believe it or not, I sold the defective battery "as-is" on eBay for $30 plus shipping. But I digress. My complaint with the mower is that you can't mow very close to walls or edging. The geometry of the mower simply won't allow it. So I need to use my string trimmer to hit the areas the mower can't mow. I also avoid using the self-propel feature as it sucks up too much battery power. Fortunately my yard is fairly flat. Overall I'm happy with the mower. It's a bit noisier than my neighbors electric mower but that's not a big deal. I'ts still way more quiet than a gas mower. With talk of only going straight with drive mode engaged, can you drive mode mow a tight circle around, say a Toyota Prius for example, because all the drive mowers I have ever used where able to do curves. When faced with a squareish piece of lawn, I cut the outside edge two or three passes, then cut the corners with a curve and keep moving, not having to constantly do 90 degree turns alot. Go back later to get the missed cut corner grass. I once tried diagonal stripes. Having to completely turn around after each straight pass, screw that, no way. Mow lines disappear quickly, no problem. I drive a Prius. Good videos.

    We just got the 80V Greenworks Pro mower, based on this and other reviews....And a different mower came in the mail. Doesn't have all the manual turbo mode type adjustments. No "dashboard". Perhaps it's a newer version that streamlined or automated some of the functionality? Not sure, but we love it. Our grass was super long as we hemmed and hawed about which battery mower to get. One charge ate through both the back and front yard, with a second run over the back. On one of the highest settings, to be reasonable, but still, impressive. I get a good feeling about this choice. It was about 650 Canadian, so not cheap, but I think we'll like our decision.

    Great channel, man! Please keep up the content! I bought this exact mower from Costco a few months ago when it was on sale for $499. I do like the mower but my biggest complaint is the same one you had. The rear wheels lock up when trying to back the mower up unless you roll it forward first. Major PITA! My gas powered Honda HRX never did that. It is so annoying, I may be purchasing the EGO 2156SP to replace it. Did you experience the same phenomenon when you tested the 2156SP? Seems like people are saying it's a deliberate safety feature in these mowers. The EGO would cost me $250 more. Would you consider the 2156SP an upgrade to the Costco Greenworks? I have the Greenworks 80v Snowblower (and some other tools) and normally charge the batteries inside the house, but accidentally left the battery in the cold garage this past winter and was afraid I had killed the battery by letting it get too low. When I would put the battery in the charger, it would charge for 5-10 seconds and then blink red. I saw elsewhere that if the battery is TOO low it will cause the charger to go into protect to prevent too much charging. Instead of jumpering from another battery (what some youtubers did) I would instead slide the battery on for 10 seconds, not fully latching in place, then slide it out of charge just as it was about to go into protect (red). I sat there for 5 or10 minutes sliding the battery on and off the charger every 10 seconds or so... and soon it would charge for 30 seconds at a time... and then a couple more short charge cycles and it resumed normal charging and has worked fine ever since. Moral of the story, when the battery starts cutting out, swap batteries and get it charging. Deplete the battery completely and you'll be doing the cha-cha-charger slide like I was. 😆

    My son bought this mower and found the smaller one didn't hold charge for very long. It seemed to use both at the same time when mowing and he got just under 60 min first time. He charged little one again and got 20 min to finish front yard. (1/2 acre or less) My husband's mower uses one batter and then you turn key and use the other. Right before the Milwaukee mower came out, I got one of those green works from Costco. I needed to replace a very old and worn out JD walk behind mower. First one I returned the whole mower kit because it had a shorted battery that smoked the charger. The replacement made it 1/3 of the way through my yard, then the freewheel clutch for the self propel failed. Tried to finish by pushing the mower to finish and then it crapped another battery in an amazing smoke show.
    I was then going to go with the Ego, since my neighbor had such great luck and it felt better than a Ryobi, but the usual suspects couldn’t tell me when one was going to be in. Then the Orange box got the Milwaukee and had the whole lawn care kit on sale for a blow out intro price including 3 12.0 batteries. Not one single issue and it feels like a gas mower.
    The ego kinda feels like a heavy plastic starship, the Milwaukee is heavier and more rigid than the greenworks. All 3 *even with my limited experience with greenworks* have very good power.

      The batteries have a four year warranty from Greenworks, and Costco kicks it up to eight years for the machine and the batteries. The extra four years warranty is applied when you register the unit online with a copy of the Costco receipt ! I did mine last night. It took less than five minutes. If you don't have a scanner, you can take a photo of your receipt with your cellphone and upload it to your computer. Greenworks has a link within the registration process to upload the receipt. The whole process was very easy !

    Cons:
    1. Plastic throttle and safety where you know overtime you will break it.😂
    2. The locking wheels for safety takes a bit to get used to, just stop the self propel then you can roll it around corners or back and forth.
    3. Read the directions. I didn't and just watched a video and didnt know the self propel speed actually adjusts from left to right, no just slow and fast. So you can put the grey thing in the middle for half full speed.
    4. If you and your neighbor are friendly and use each others tools they will want to use it 😂.
    Pros
    1. I like that i didnt have to break out the gas and oil, no cleaning a filter, no pulling a starter.
    2. Putting it together was 2 screws. The unpacking and throwing away the cardboard was harder than the assembly.
    3. Sadly I hardly every cleaned the blade and undersides of my gas mower because of tipping it with gas and having to scrape. This folds up with the underside of the mower exposed so its really easy to clean both the front and underside of the mower where the balde is.
    4. Its made to fold and stand, so it doesn't take up a ton of room like a gas mower.
    5. Its much quieter than a gas mower.

As a result, they made the blade adapter plastic so that when someone inadvertently hits a stump or large rock, it breaks the blade adapter instead of bending the shaft. Much less expensive to replace a plastic blade adapter rather than an entire electric motor.

    2:47. Sweet potato pie...that's what I'm talking about!
    4:35. Maybe I walk too slow, but I have 0.5 acres and it takes me at least 1:20 to mow it. I would be concerned about running out of juice with this mower. No way I could cut my yard in 65 minutes...I have a pretty big and wide berm hill in the backyard that is 3 feet high from ground level. it slows me down.

      Hmm - yeah if it takes that long then this battery may not get you as far as you need. You can always buy another battery to slap on here after the first one dies.

    • @fposmith
      @fposmith Місяць тому

      If you get the one from Costco, it comes with two batteries and takes both batteries at once. When the first battery runs low, the second battery kicks in so you can finish the yard ! It also comes with a quick charger. It will charge the 4AH battery in under 45 minutes ! It comes with an extra blade as well !

    At 4:25 you talked abt able to mowe 3/4 acre of lawn. Do you have slope in your lawn? My batteries died very soon and was able to mow 1//4th my 3/4 acre lawn.. but out of that 1/4 lawn, 3/4th was slope
    For now, my impression.. plan 3 days of mowing on a 3/4 acre job.. Unless you are a UA-camr where this is your job and can spend whole day charging and then cut

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  2 місяці тому

      Well I am a UA-camr where this is my whole day.
      But that doesn’t sound right - I can easily get my lawn mowed on one charge and it’s about the same size…
      Did you have the self propelled function doing all the work?

    • @saurabhm19782
      @saurabhm19782 2 місяці тому

      @TheLawnReview Appreciate your reply. Yes, it took me 3 charges to do about 0.5 acre of my lawn. Yes, I was using self propeller for my entire yard. I did notice that my 2amp battery was dieing in first 5 mins, leaving no charge. May be because of faulty battery I had this bad experience. Will be calling in Greenworks support or will go to Costco to replace it.

  • @fposmith
    @fposmith 2 місяці тому

    Why didn't you just take it back instead of complaining about it ? Something is obviously wrong with it ! There is not a manufacturer on the planet that has a 100% defect free record ! You got a bad one ! I'm sorry that happened to you. Take it back and get a replacement. If the next one has the same issue, then you know it's a bad "lot" ! Greenworks should be notified immediately so they can pull that lot from the floor and find out what happened instead of keep selling defective mowers to unsuspecting customers ! The one I got from Costco operates flawlessly ! It does everything it say's it's suppose to ! I am very happy with it ! A great mower at a great price ! No one in the industry can beat them at this point ! It's just unfortunate that a reviewer got the bad one !

    I bought the same model as yours, and I love it!
    I only 2 issues:
    1. How you were able to insert the handle so easily during installation? I could not slide the excess cable down through the rail, so I had to struggle to snake the cable into the space above the handle release.
    2. Like you, my 4Ah battery died after around 4 uses. My voltmeter showed it was at 73V, but the charger did not “see” it, so after attempting to charge for 5 seconds, the charger fan would stop blowing, and the red LED would start flashing. There’s another UA-cam video that used the 2Ah battery to “jump start” the dead battery, which also reset it so that the charger could see it again. However, I just called Greenworks (their number is on the battery, and they sent me a new one within a week. Since they didn’t ask for the other battery, I will try jump starting it to see if I can revive it.
    Another tip:
    The left battery is used first, so the Greenworks customer service rep recommended I put the 4Ah battery in the left slot and the 2Ah battery in the right slot. The 2Ah battery is essentially your reserve battery.

    Has anyone noticed if their motor shaft is wobbly/not true? I have two 21" non self propelled 80 volt mowers and both of the shafts are wobbly and so each end of the blade does not travel on the same plane, but rather roughly close to 1/2" apart which is not good and likely affects the cut quality. Here is a video I made attempting to show mine. If nothing else, you can see the wobble in the plastic piece with the fins...
