    That is so not boring to watch. I have to wait 2 months to get my drum carder, so this is amazing to me and I love seeing the whole thing in real time. Thank you.

      Thanks! It does take a lot of time to edit. I keep thinking I will get better, but I don’t have a script so sometimes it s a while before I say something useful! LOL!

    where do you get the wood diz you have shown in other videos?

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts  10 місяців тому

      I got it on Etsy. I can’t remember which store, but I think there was only one that has gorgeous wood dizzes.

    Is there a difference with spinning when using wool from diz+carder versus wool from diz+hackle?
    Is there more risk of having 'folded' fibers from the carded wool. Like accidentely you pull it up from the tiny hooks and it stays folded.
    And that with wool from the hackle everything will be straight and parallel because of the horizontal pull from the vertical standing spikes?

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes. Absolutely. Anything carded is woolen prep. Roving is woolen prep. The fibers are not aligned. Top is when the fibers are aligned also called worsted prep. That’s what you get when you diz from your hackle. It is true worsted prep if when you place your fiber on the hackle, you put it all in the same direction like loading the tips onto the comb so that all the fibers are in the same direction.
      To complicate things further if you are blending top on your drum carder it’s semi worsted and if you are combing wool on your hackle and you don’t put the locks in the same direction. It’s semi woolen prep!

      I realized you are asking about spinning- sorry. It’s easy to spin from dizzed roving because it’s like predrafting. Just as it spinning from rolags. The spinning difference between woolen and worsted is woolen spin has more loft, more air trapped in it and is warmer and doesn’t wear as well as spun top. If woolen and worsted preps are done properly they are both easy to spin!

      Thank you for your reply.
      The reason i asked is that i already decided to buy a drum carder and to hand build a hackle. But now that you showed me i can also use a diz with a drum carder i started wondering if i would still need to build myself a hackle. I really enjoy spinning from combed rovings, it's just so smooth and easy.
      So maybe my question should have been more in the direction of: would it be worth it to still build myself a hackle even though i could also use a diz with a drum carder?
      (I hate spinning from the rolled up batts (rolags?) from drum carder, still gives me a lot of knots in the fiber - so i'm so happy to see i could use a diz with a drum carder)

    I used my diz with the drum carder for the first time and I left about and ounce behind😢 on the carder.

      The secret is the burnishing brush. It pa is it down and getting the base layer packed well will allow it to come of easier. Also, make sure your fibers are all parallel on the drum. Use a small amount and pull up as you roll the drum (like a little drafting) and slide the diz towards the drum.

      @@jkfiberarts I did get a good burnishing brush. Actually the one you recommended. It’s gonna be a learning curve. I think some of my fibers weren’t exactly straight.

    so are you making the drum roll in the opposite direction with the diz? My drum carder doesnt seem to want to go in the opposite direction for very long before it feels like its jammed.

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts  Місяць тому

      When I load the fiber my drum spins clockwise ie away from the tray. When I remove a batt, diz or make rolags I slowly pull the drum counterclockwise to remove the fiber. What type of carder do you have? Both my Ashford and Clemes and Clemes rotate both directions. If my carder get jammed it’s because too much fiber has been loaded for a pass. I take the drum belt off and the drum will move freely so I can unstick it. Do you clean your carder? Maybe there is a lot fiber underneath it. That is where all the dirt and loose fiber goes. I have a tray that catches most of it and I empty it between batts.

    • @jkfiberarts

      If it breaks, no big deal. Just start like you did at the beginning. It will almost certainly break on your first try.

    • @jkfiberarts
      @jkfiberarts  9 місяців тому

      @weegie2818 it is! I like my Ashford, but I am on the back order list for a Clemes and Clemes Elite Double Wide Crankless that can card 7 oz at a time and there is no handle to get in my way or hurt my elbow, it also has sharpened tines so it can card very fine fibers with 72 TPI cloth. You will see me using it, hopefully soon. I have been waiting 4 months. They told me November. I hope it is an accurate time. Someone told me they waited 14 months!!! Brother Super Carder is also high end, great reputation. I will sell my Ashford once I get up and running with my double wide elite, and I take great care of my equipment.
