Deep Dive and Review - Boss RC-500 2 Channel Looper

  • UPDATE: Even though I say you could use other power adapters, this is MY personal opinion and in NO WAY supported by BOSS and there have been reports of these units breaking when powered incorrectly, so BOSS's position is CLEARLY to only use their supported power supply!!!
Reading a Boss Manual is like getting root canal done at the dentist, so Boss hired me to do it for you and guide you through the whole thing... so sit back and learn every aspect of the RC-500 Looper... and it's also a review, so I'll unveil the negative stuff as well!

Thank you so much for making this lengthy video! It was very interesting and informative. I’m new to all of this and just got the rc 500 yesterday. I’ll be rewatching this video again a few more times and playing with the loop station to get it to stick in my head. This is definitely a “get to know” pedal before you start doing anything serious with it.

Thank you so much for this. I have been going nuts for days (not much of a trip, admittedly) trying to get two tracks to play in series, verse/chorus/verse. You demonstrated it to the point where lo and behold, it works! Others have talked about it, but you put the video of your actual foot switch actions up and that made all the difference.
I have been playing for a long, long time... my 66 Strat was a 16th birthday present, for crying out loud... and I think your videos are terrific and highly entertaining. Jam on!

      @@AdrianRichard-tx2bc
      Hi Adrian
Yeah, this was a little tough to figure out.
      Under Memory:
      Play mode: Single
      Single Change: Loop End
      Track Change: Series
Record your verse or part on Track 1
Do the other part on Track 2
While playing either track back, at any time during the verse, click the Track Select button and then the Rec/Play button. When the playback reaches the end of the track you're on, it will go right into the other. Same thing to bring it back. You don't have to worry about timing, just somewhere near the point where you want to trigger the change.
When recording, it obviously helps to play right past the cutoff point a tiny bit so there won't be any dead air, so to speak, when the tracks switch.
I hope I've explained this well enough. It was a bear learning it, but good old Eystch got me pointed in the right direction.

    • @anthonykenny1320
      @anthonykenny1320 Рік тому

To get the two tracks to play in time you have to ensure that you start the second track at the end of the first and end the second track at the end of the first as well
To do this you have have the display on “two tack position”
To get to that *menu *setup by pressing memory/value once scroll to 2TRACKPOS
then when recording on second track you must watch the screen and visually line the two tracks up
      I hope that’s clear
It’s very annoying and inconvenient and unlike any other Boss looper ( and I have had them all) but the difference between 16 and 32 bit recording is worth it

Thanks henning for this ULTIMATE review 😊 this video is very useful !
If Boss is reading… here’s my 2cents as final customer :
    • I’m using it with a 9v powerbank…works perfect.
    • I have bought the expensive boss midi cable, quality cable but like you said, it’s way too expensive !
    • Rythm section : i would like to have more rock/metal/pop & dance patterns ! The additional rythms available at « Boss tone central » are useless : they take the place of 1 looper track ! I would expect that we can import and add more rythm inside the rc500, not instead of a looper track…
    • External midi pedalboard is mandatory if you want to use all the parameters : so add 150/200 € to the rc500 pricing…
    • You have an xlr mic input for vocals … i would like in a future update to have the vocoder/robot/autotune effect like the RC505 !!!!
At the end, I’m happy with this rc500, but it needs a lot of menu diving, and it’s not always easy to locate some parameters. But quality is there and when fully extended with midi , it's a beast.

You can actually get male TRS to 5 pin MIDI female connectors that allow you to use any midi cable, and they’re not at all expensive. I’ve used them with my Boss RC5 and they work perfectly

14:15 The reason BOSS stipulates specific model BOSS adapters is because *in some cases* some pedals draw more current than others. For pedals that draw a lot of current - say, one that pulls .5A, using a low current-rated 9v DC adapter - say, one rated for 200mA might work....for a few minutes....until the adapter catches fire. You need to respect current draw, and be careful when ignoring those adapter requirements. They're not always BS.

An hour-and-a-half is too much for a video like this, but nothing that some organization and planning wouldn't help with. The instruction book is sort of vague on a lot of things. I'm going to have to watch this video several times to really absorb most of it. One thing I will recommend to everyone is to go on the Boss web site and download the latest operating system which is more stable in operation than the original version.

Seriously nice work, Eytschpi42! After listening to your review, I am thinking of a decision tree in the form of a series of questions, The first for me being “do I want to record in serial or in parallel?” Each question sets Up prompts or reminders, things to keep in mind when pursuing a particular path. Probably, just by doing this I will get my head around the unit (coming tomorrow evening!), But I suspect it will help to catch the unexpected settings while I am learning. It reminds me of setting up PA for a live show: place the equipment, then run power, then run audio, then normalize gain- hey, wait! Why is there no sound? Ah, I left the break switch engaged. Why do I always forget that? The advantage of Boss loopers is their weakness: The unit is capable of setting up multiple scenarios, but because of that the unit requires setup for each scenario. It reminds me of the Apollo 11 moon landing: forgetting to turn off one switch overloaded The computers, throwing them into an otherwise unnecessary abort/continue decision. And somehow that reminds me of this meme: commas save lives! “Let’s eat, grandma.” Versus “Let’s eat grandma!” Enjoying your humor and your pets. Thanks for all your hard work on this.

Another quick question. If I want to name a loop is there a way to clear the existing name in one hit first (like a backspace) or do I need to start at the end and select each character and scroll to a blank working backwards? I find it very annoying to have to do this and can’t imagine there isn’t a simpler way.

    Very good video.
I spent a few hours learning RC-500 (during February 2024) and returned it for several reasons... having to use the output jack to turn it on, having to disconnect the output jack to turn it off, no way to set rhythm volume globally, output cannot be used for headphones unless we like everything only in one ear. Two times of a rhythm coming through my speakers at volume level 100 pissed me off. It seems like it should be $55 not $350. It reminds me of little Coleco games in the 1970's and 1980's.

Hi, thanx for this very interesting video. I have a question about using a backing track and play over it in a special way. Don't know if what I want, is possible. Situation is as follows. I got a backing track of only the piano track of the song Feel from Robbie Williams. In the middle and in the end of this song is a part in were I (play the guitar) have to play two parts in the same time. First a riff and then the riff and a wah piece both together. So I thought this can be done by the RC500. But what I forget was that the backing track is playing the whole song and there only twice a part were I would use the looper. So, is it possible to let the looper play the backing track on Track 1, and if we are in the middle, I can switch the looper on to record on track 2 and then record the riff. After the riff, I let loop the riff and can play the wah piece over it, while the backing track goes on on track 1. What happened is, that if I start to play the backing track from beginning, and goes to track 2, it seems that recording on track 2 is still on. The recording on track 2 should starting only when I hit it in the middle or end of the song.

Even being a paid review, thank you for your honest comments! Thats what we are looking for.
I saw that you also made a review of the Harley Benton Midi Controller (aka Melo Audio Midi Commander, which I own). I was wondering if this MIDI Controller would work with RC 500 as you have mention that MIDI message should be 127 and 0 on a single push of a button. Thanks!!!

Is it possible to finish recording Loop 1 (verse) and instantly start recording Loop2 (chorus)?

i just bought the RC500 and noticed an immediate problem. when i record a loop in either track and alter the tempo even slightly, it cause the loop soung to distort as a warble.
i've updated the system version to 1.02 and turned off all loop FX, still the same problem. i've contacted Boss and waiting for an answer. do i have a defective unit or is this a product design defect?

Thank you for the tutorial. It is very helpful! I cant find a solution for this... Today i rec on my daw an intro to transfer it on rc500, and when i connected to the amp the sound was extremely loud. I thought that it was the output dB....I returned to the daw and i change the output volume at -12 dB and the problem still exist. The looper has the new update. Any ideas???? Thank you again :)

Hey, thank you so much for this very useful review!
Did you figure out a way to make midi controller work when it just send 127 messages in CC?
Because I bought the MP-100 from Harley Benton and realize that it's not working the way it should. You can edit the custom mode and set it toggle, but it means that you have to press 2 times for every actions...
Maybe there's another way to program the mp100, to make it send 127 when pressed down and 0 when released?

This was exactly my concern! Right now i'm looking for the best midi foot controller to easily work with this thing and have the 8 toggles at your disposition. Was thinking of the Harley Benton MP-100 or the old Behringer FCB-1010. Thought of going for the Harley Benton but if what you're stating is the only option to make it work, its a hassle. Curious what other people's experiences are!

Hi and thank you very much! I'm a sax and keyboards player, and I've been told by a friend I should buy a looper for live gigs (you know nowadays it's more and more difficult to play with bands for little gigs so I'm thinking to play alone sometimes - we need money too ;-).
The problem is that I'm not good with electronic and computers, menus etc... I first thought to buy RC3 (I don't know if you can use it with a sax), now I'm checking RC500...
What would you advice me to buy if I want to prepare at home loops with keyoard or sax (3 or 4 parts), and then go play live, knowing that I would prefer an easy one? RC500 seems to have a very complicated menu, I'm not sure if I can use it... Thank you again!

What about something simple like recording one of the great full song backing tracks from UA-cam, But, with the ability to have control (from this loop station) of the tempo for the pre-recorded backing track to one track, then your rhythm and lead on the 2nd track instead of struggling with being a drummer and guitar player trying to figure out ALL the options it provides? Can adjusting the tempo of ANY pre-recorded, full song backing track be done on any brand looper out there?

Does anyone know whether track 2 (on parallel mode) must be the same length or multiples of track 1. For instance, can I record a two measure percussion loop on track 1 and record a 16 measure loop on track 2 with track 1 repeating 8 times?

Does anyone know of a detailed video walkthrough of how to use the xsonic midi with the RC-500? The section on MIDI here was super fast and low on how to do things. I mean a video that details how to use the xsonic app and how to do that send 127-0 mentioned, it wasn't explained. I'm not having much success with mine.

Great video. Thanks for putting the effort in. Had my RC-500 since last week and was frustrated at lack of in depth video so perfect timing.
One query/issue it still have is to do with Rhythm variations. You mention the A and B variations but don’t demonstrate. I cannot get these to change at all, end of loop or end of measure it doesn’t happen. Any idea?
You also mention creating a preset and copying it to other memories but don’t explain how (I may have missed it as fell asleep for 5 minutes somewhere in the middle) ;-)

    • @EytschPi42
      @EytschPi42  3 роки тому +1

just make a preset, hit save and pick a new memory... do it for all of them.
As for variations.... you have to assign a variation change to a foot controller

@@EytschPi42 thank for the reply. Annoys me that count in isn’t on by default and would also like to reduce level of drums globally. Will have a go at a custom preset tomorrow. Was under the impression than the A/B transition was something you could set without needing to trigger with pedal. Thanks for clarifying.

Henning, those macmull guitars are great right? I think they have a f style 9.5" neck radius (which I like), I was looking at your hp42 signature guitar, 13.something" radius... so what I'm asking is aren't the mcmulls a little bit curved for your preference?

i think the fact that you can use midi to swith each parts of the drum kits on and off is awsome, and i hope ppl didnt miss that, it is like the drum part itself is a 4 layered looper with two traks and even fills when you switch between them if you want , you can use a controller to switch kits and patterns on the go too, that is UNLESS you chose to play and record your own drum patterns using any of the onboard kits trough midi in (they have many samples eachas you will find out when playing them with a keyboard, opens up for almost limitless loads of new variations
