- 2000 Ponitac Grand Am - Random Blinker Clicking Noise Fix
Long story short if you did this fix and still have the problem, either you need to clean the contacts better or it's too worn out and just needs to be replaced. - Авто та транспорт
hey gpsnw. i tried your fix for the problem listed and it worked like a dream. and i thank you very much for that. how ever for everyone who decides to fallow this video, i would like to add one small note that will help everyone out a bit longer with this fix. when using a q-tip to clean the points dip it into some nail polish remover first and it will do a much better job on the points. my wife's car had the clicking problem so long that she started needing to use the turn signal lever to manually control the blinkers as they wouldn't work otherwise but this fixed it completely and they have never worked better. and it saved us 250 in repair cost that only took me 10 min's to fix. so great work man you will help alot of people with this video:)
Just spent $93 bucks and replaced the switch, but without your help, I’d have been lost. Thank you for being very detailed in this video sir!
Worked good for my 2002 Grand Am. At 3:35 he talks about a pin that sticks out of the multi-function switch for the horn. Be sure that when you put the multi-function switch back on the steering column that this pin goes behind the round brass ring it slides on. The first time I started to tighten the multi-function switch back in it felt funny/spongy like something wasn't seated. This horn pin was sticking above the brass ring and compressing it. I got lucky and nothing broke, but lesson learned.
Dude, I love your videos, I've used them to fix almost all of the issues on my grand am, or at least as a general guide.
I've been holding off on doing this, but I finally fixed it and just finished doing this as I'm typing this comment. Holy shit man, thanks so much, I did everything you directed and even put the grease you recommended. No more antagonizing clicking and having to raise the volume on my radio to sound out the clicking.
Wow bro, Thanks so much for this. 10 minute fix and I'm not embarrassed to let people ride with me anymore. So many people had so many ridiculous recommendations, this one works and cost me a couple bucks for dielectric grease.
Thank you for this fix. You just saved me a couple hundred dollars which is what the dealer wanted to fix this problem. I have no skills when it comes to car repairs but your video gave me the confidence to tackle this little project. If it hadn't been for having to run to the store to replace the torx screw driver that has gone missing, this would have taken under 20 minutes. Thanks for your help!
I greatly appreciate this video! The clicking in my 2001 Grand Am had been intermittent for a long time, but became constant recently. I had read before that the contacts could be cleaned, but never saw enough of a tutorial how to get in far enough to clean them.
The cost of one Torx 25 and one Torx 10 screwdriver plus this video saved me quite a lot of money and headache!
This worked perfectly for my 2000 Alero! My bf was convinced we needed to replace relay switch, but i insisted we try this fix, and it worked like a charm. $6 for the grease, $2.50 for the rubbing alcohol, 20 minutes, and a couple simple tools. The repair shop quoted me $380 to fix this by replacing the relay switch (which obviously would've done nothing). So appreciate the vid!
Just did this to my friends 2004 Grand AM and it stopped clicking. Thanks. Your the man.
Dude you just saved me 430.00 big ones. A new combo switch is about that price give or take. Mind you worse case scenario I would have went to a scrap yard and taken one off a scraper. All I had was a tiny never used paint brush. I cleaned the grime on the connecters with light strokes as I pryed it open just enough thanks to your easy to follow and well instructed video. I've dealing with this for 2 months. Today I said FUCK IT!! I did it in auto parts store parking lot. Took me all of about 20
BTW, Thanks. This solved the problem on my wife's 2001 Grand Am. She had the dealer fix it once years ago but was in no way going to pay to fix now.. The fix did not work at first however I figured out that the middle connector was for the turn signal and with a continuity tester I was able to figure out what pins were shorted / what area to deeply clean.
drescherjm cool
I just fixed my clicking issue with the help of your video. Really appreciate you taking the time to make this.
Fixed my 2003 Malibu. Took less than 10 minutes thanks to your video! Thank you it was driving me crazy!!!
Thanks for the video. I took the control unit out and cleaned the contacts but had the same issue with the random clicking and intermittent turn signals working. I figured that it must be the hazard like switch so i purchased one and installed it. Same issue still. Then went back into the control unit. I found that there was gunk (old grease mixed with worn metal) between the slots in the plate the contacts switch with. I cleaned it out, put it back in and wah la, that worked. It was just enough to short it out. I put the old hazard switch back in, and all is good. Thanks for your helpful video.
Also, a good way to test for the hazard switch is to disconnect the middle wire connector on the control unit and see if the hazards work correctly. if they do, then its is most likely dirty contacts in the turn signal switch.
Thank you so much. Worked like a charm. The blinker noise was totally fixed and there was no issue with horn or blinker switching off on it's own.
I have a 2001 Alero, started acting funny this morning. Whole bunch of websites out there suggesting to change the relay attached to the hazard switch. I never did change out the hazard switch and was doubtful that was the solution. Lucky I found this youtube video and was able to clean up my switch and for now it looks like it works. one word of warning, if the switch does not sit back just right when you put it back chances are likely you are bending the horn connecter. Press it back!
This morning I started hearing the clicking and this afternoon I fixed it thanks to you!
the best video I've seen and used! great explanation, excellent description. got results in second try. don't get discouraged.
I did this before, and it worked, so I did a little quick recap review again, so wanted to say thank you again too for having posted this. Thanks
Did what you said and it worked. Thank you. That clicking noise was driving me crazy.
that was hella easy to do,i know NOTHING bout cars and it took me about 20minutes,fixed my malibu that had problems for 4months took it to have it fix, bought the hazard lights button but still made the annoying sound.THANKS ALOT
2004 Grand Am SE. Third attempt...finally worked! Thank you so much for this tutorial. If you are going to try this fix, make sure to clean every contact and slot thoroughly.
Thanks alot man clicking was driving me crazy for over a year!
Great tutorial, thanks! Clear and concise explanations. Pointing out things to watch out for was really useful too.
Took me a couple shots, but you're instructions definitely helped me do the job. My problem area was getting the copper contacts completely clean, using the dielectric grease, and then upon reinstalling the part, I had some trouble keeping the metal pin from sticking out too far, causing it to rest on the metal disc, instead of making end-to-end contact to activate the horn.
Many thanks. This saved me $100.00+ dollars from the shop. : D
I ended up placing a thin piece of plastic between the horn switch as I slid the unit back in place, then pulled it out as the unit went in. It made it a lot easier to slide it back in place. The video was great. Thanks
Thanks so much! This has been driving me nuts.and this fix worked right away.
Thank you so much for this informative and easy to follow intructional video! My dad watched the video and fixed my mom's car. Great work and thanks again for the help. You da man!
Thanks for this video, it helped a ton. My contacts were filthy. All cleaned up and ready for action now.
Although I don't drive a Grand Am, I just want you to know that this video just saved me at least $200!!! Thanks for uploading it. I followed your directions for the most part and fixed it myself. They wanted to do a diagnostic test and a bunch on other crap. I said no and went and purchased the flasher part and fixed it myself in only a few minutes and saved a ton of cash! Thanks!!!
Took me 10 minutes and perfect fix. Thank you very much!
Worked like a charm on my 2003 Alero. The horn contact on mine is spring loaded so I just had to push it back in as I was dropping the switch assembly back in place. Thanks for posting.
Thanks a lot for posting this. My car has been making this noise off an on over a period of six years. Instead of cleaning the old switch I just bought a new one since I was able to find a good price on Amazon for $50.00 and replaced it myself which saved a lot of money versus taking to the dealership or to a shop.
Thank you so freaking much!!!!! Such an easy fix and it didn't even take me a half hour! I can enjoy driving again!!!
Thank you big time! I used this video to fix the clicking that started about a month ago. The clicking noise was constant and cleaning the contacts stopped the clicking!
thanks man! worked great. thank god for youtube and people like you who take the time out of there day to make these videos to help a hack like me.
I had this problem with my daughter's 2002 Olds Alero. Pretty much the same set up. My first attempt, I ended up with a constant clicking. I took the switch out and totally disassembled it...against your recommendation. The only spring was for the horn contact button. It actually makes contact with the ring on top of the disk on the Alero.
After I split the switch, I cleaned all the contacts really well and reassembled it. Works like a champ! Thanks for posting the video, Easy fix.
GREAT FIX! Your video is awesome. Followed it and no more clicking. Thank you!
Very helpful. Step by step this is the easiest fix to follow. Thank you.
Had this problem and found your video, went through the steps and it fixed it. Thank you very much for posting this. Very good job.
Thanks I did not know it was so easy I broke the bliker off because of that clicking so I have had no blikers for a week and riding with high beams your a life saver
Thanks this worked on my wife's 2002 malibu!! You saved us a ton of money!! Thanks again!
I tried this on my 1998 Malibu, cleaned the contacts, put it back in, still ticking and now the key alarm sounds constantly. Took it back out, recleaned the contacts but this time I used 65 psi of air from my compressor to blow out the entire switch. Put it back in and it's working perfectly. Thanks for the help.
Thanks so much... This has been driving me crazy going to do this today!!!!!
This worked on 2003 Alero. Thank You this is an excellent video. I did replace the hazard switch first but that did not work. This was very easy and fast.
Rick R
You are my hero!! Nice, easy fix. Horn works and signals disengage when I turn the wheel back. Awesome!
Great video and tips at the end. Just finished working on the car and everything seems to working well. Thanks!
Dec 29 2014... Well I'll be damned! Easy enough...followed the directions and works like a damn charm! Real quick and easy about 10 to 15 mins. Don't know why it took me so long to look this up just like most of us...lol Another satisfied subscriber...!
Great job bro. You saved me a lot of money and I can't believe how easy it was
Great fix, quick and it worked. Great tutorial on the process.
Thanks man. Took me like 10min to fix the problem.
Thanks for you vid, my flasher stopped making intermittent clicking sound, the problem seems to be dirty grease between the contacts. We can see that grease from the outside
(where the contacts are) that needs to be removed, and for the horn rod, its spring loaded, when you put the assembly back in the car, you need to push it inside so it makes contact on the face of the big metal ring. Thanks again, you did a great job on that video!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. It really made this job so much easier and it was a great fix. Thanks again
Thanks for uploading the video👍 easy to follow and well explained, no more clicking noise :)
My 05 grand am has been making that annoying clicking sound for months now, it got so bad recently that it clicks constantly... Tried whats in your video and it seems to have worked. No more clicking, took it for a test drive for 10 mins and it works fine. Thanks! (The contacts were DIRTY, black crud on them..)
This was a good fix. There was also some gel on the outside of the case, on the metal part. That needed to be cleaned up as well, so watch for that if you try this.
Thank you very much, this worked on my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. No more annoying clicking.
Thanks for your video! Quote from the shop was $525!!! Only took about 15 minutes from start to finish after the battery disconnect wait.
Great video, just did this and everything went smoothly....many thanks!
Great video, this did the trick for me. One thing that I encountered was having to clean off the dielectric grease that I applied after cleaning the first time. The grease actually picked up more of the grime which I then had to clean out from between the gaps in the circuit board. So, cleaning it a second time and cleaning out the gaps real good will save you from having to take it all apart a second time like I did... Also, a thin application of the grease should be sufficient.
Essentially the exact same issue for a 2002 Subaru Legacy GT. Cleaned the contacts, added a little grease back in and works amazing.
This absolutely just worked for me on my 2005. Even when it was to the point of having a small amount of smoke coming up from the column.
Thanks a lot.
That happened to mine too and I got a bit worried fir a second
Thanks for this video!!!!!! worked perfectly! and it was simple to do. Done on a 2001 Grand Am GT
Worked great for me! Thanks for the help, thankful that clicking is gone!
Well done video, very thorough and intelligently described.
May 2020 and your video was greatly helpful. I'm not a car guy at all and was able to fix it. Thanks for the video!!!
Oh... It worked for my 2004 Grand Am
Thank you for this fix totally works!!!!! I will add I had a 2003 grand am and the horn pin stuck out a little more but put it back in and totally worked.
CANT WAIT TO DO THIS MINE HAS BEEN CLICKING FOR 4 YEARS
HAHA I'm so glad I'm not the only one. At least 3 years for me, just never got around to dealing with it. Eventually just tuned out the clicky clicky, unless someone else rides with me of course.
Fucking mine gave me a puff of smoke today LMAO I’m going to get it fixed this week
Damn my alero just started dking that yesterday. Cant deal with it. Must fix now lol
did it today. worked like a charm. thanks buddy
THANK YOU!! You saved me $100 in parts.
I just got my 04 pontiac grand am back from my brother and I had to fix alot of things and the turns signal noise was gonna be next I am so glad I found this video I am gonna try it tomorrow when its not 12 in the morning lol :) thanks sooo much!
Thank you so much! This will be my friday night fun.
Once I get the proper tools, I'm so doing this! Thank you!!
THANK YOU!!! I was wondering what the hell that noise was.
Thank you so very much I'm encountering this problem!
Thank you very much, your video is #1. And the tudorial is great. You are awesome!!!
Worked like a charm! Thanks, Kid!
Dope video. Just fixed it. Thanks a million!
I included your video link in my directions on Instructables website. You were a big help! Search for Fix Psychotic Grand Am Signal Clicking.
@hejul2 Great. Thank you for the tip and thanks for trying it. Yes depending on how bad your contacts are the sanding is very possibly needed. The one I fixed was VERY dirty and almost dry so once the contacts dry out then the corrosion starts. (The dielectric grease is to protect the contacts from future issues). Very good point again thank you for posting your tip.
Thank you for the great instructions!
thanks great video had the same problem on a 2000 malibu did exactly like u said and it worked perfectly. but instead of alcohol i sprayed a little brake cleaner on a q-tip and it took grease right off
worked on the first try. thank you for making this video
05 Grand am, this fixed it, I had to clean it out twice, and one of the plugs smoked for a second, and I jammed the horn plug and it honked so that suprised me, but it all went well, still works in 2022
Thank you❗ dope video💯 never heard the air bag part but was always told to disconnect the battery anytime you working with electric things⚡😅🙃
Thanks man a bunch just had to do this now to the old Grand am GT with success 👍
Really great video, great explanation. Did the whole process twice, didn't fix the problem.
Paula Montgomery did you fix yet ? Lol if so how ?
your a boss really appreciate you taking the time to do this video works perfect now
I bought an 04 Grand Am with this issue yesterday, followed this instructions and it's no longer doing it anymore. A tip before you try to put it back in. Don't forget about the contact pin for the horn. As he said if it's out too far it won't fit right, but if it's in too far your horn won't work. You have to make sure that pin touches the contact plate when you put it back in. You can use a pair of needle nose pliers to do that. Be sure to test your horn when you fit it back in.
Just used this fix today. Contacts were dirty. The clicking noise was almost constant and now only happens once every 10 turns or so and it's getting better. I may need to clean the contacts again, but this worked quite well for me. I have a bonneville and the horn "tab" had to be pushed in when reinserting the switch assembly and stays in contact with the discs the whole time. I just thought I'd share that in case anyone else has a similar car.
Just got it all back together and worked like a charm. :)
And thanks a bunch for the info. Saves hundreds of dollars.
Ur a god sent saved my cars life and mine
Thanks, bud. Very helpful video.
Just wanted to say thank you very much sir. If I knew ya I'd take you out for beer. Problem solved!! Thanks a million my man. God bless ya
Thank you for the video. I was a great help! I fixed the sound with no problem. But now the signal won't cancel after a turn. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ☺
You are a life saver! Ahh!
i dont have any dielectric grease but would some spark plug boot protector work?
great job... you save me a mechanic..thanks..
@GPSNW I figured the horn out and the dash lights problem was a fuse that I forgot to check. Thanks for your help.
Ohhh, I always thought I had purchased the Grand Am SE car bomb package.
