i am 45. i hear this music and all the sudden its 1988 and i 16 and a half again, getting a Nintendo game set for Christmas. Punch-out came with. Wrappers from other gifts flooding the floor. My dog lobo looking at me, leery of the noise, beeps, music and sound sound fx blasting from the tv. my mom and dad still alive. happiness. security. wow.

You are wrong. Mike could not best his record. For Mr Dream was based off Rocky Marciano. Just look at his face. Mr Dream is not some generic replacement. He was based off the undisputed Champion. Whos record was only beaten, after mike . It was Floyd Maywether who beat it. Long after .

Fun fact: Mr Dream isn't just a white version of Mike Tyson. He is based on Rocky Marciano, the world heavyweight champion between 1952 and 1956, and the only heavyweight champion to be undefeated throughout his career.

He's small, but he's buff as hell. I don't think it matters how tall he is to beat an opponent, considering how b u f f he is. Then again I still question how he's able to punch his opponents with his small-ass fists. Seriously. There are boxers with HUGE fists compared to his.

i love finding those little tells in the game. my favorite is in order to punch bald bull during his charge attack, you look for a guy in the stands to take a picture
You could be coming into the fight with Dream completely undefeated with a record of 13-0 all of your wins by way of knock out, and if he beats you by decision (even if you kick his ass and by rights should be the one awarded the fight) your career is instantly over. This is truly unique in of itself as it doesn’t happen with any other opponent.
Also, it’s rather strange that when you are getting the better of Dream the rounds seem to fly by at a quick pace and it’s instantly the period between rounds with you seemingly never having enough time to put Dream away. However, it’s the opposite and rounds seem to drag on forever when Dream is beating on you and you are struggling not to get put away before the end of the round. It’s like this with a few other opponents, but it seems to be more noticeable in the fight with Dream.
I don’t like that part…. But, now you can “save” and get right back to work. I have fights saved with Mr. Sandman, Macho Man and Dream. After losing a handful of times against Mr. dream I’ll occasionally go back in try to refresh with fights against the other two I mentioned. Sandman is tough! Macho man I can sometimes be without getting touched… Anyway, this was the most impressive defeat of Mr. dream that I’ve ever seen! He made it look so easy

Mr. Dream has got to be the best character transformation in all of Nintendo. They call him Mr. Dream, but he looks like Vanilla Ice. Then he gets in the ring and he is clearly Jean Claude Van Damme, but fights like Mike Tyson.
I remember the day this was released at WALMART. The NES had a protective glass case over it with a control hooked up and people were lined up and laughing like crazy!

he's the same fighter. after tyson was removed from the game, Nintendo released a new version of Punch Out. the new version had Mr. Dream as the final boss with the exact same punching patterns as Mike Tyson.

NEWSDAVIDBR Mike Tyson got into some legal trouble and Nintendo didn't want Mike Tyson on their game because of this so they came up with Mr. Dream.

yea, tyson's contract came up and nintendo decided not to renew it. from their perspective, tyson was looking to be on the downward slope of his career and they probably didn't feel the need to renew the contract. there are some rumors around that nintendo pulled tyson out of the game because of his court case in 1992 but the game was rebranded in 1991 so that wasn't a factor.

@@uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu815dude, you can clearly see there’s no “Mike Tyson’s” on top of “Punch-Out!!” and it says “©️ 1987 Nintendo” AS WELL AS “©️ *1990* Nintendo.” Even if you put in the code featured in this video in the Tyson version, you’ll fight Mike Tyson. Yes, it’s technically the same game, but it’s still a rerelease.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this version at a video store, while being all excited about FINALLY having a "new" Punch-Out game to play (or so I thought), and rented it, only to soon discover that it was the EXACT same game as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, with Tyson merely being replaced by a white palette swap of himself the only difference it had with the original. Damn was that ever disappointing, but at least can look back and laugh about it now. That despite wasting a weekend of my life with renting this game, when I could have gotten one I DIDN'T already own, since I had M.T.'s Punch-Out! Ah, the memories! (L.O.L.!)

The way I beat him was an accident. I was having trouble with the flurry of punches, and couldn’t get past that. It turns out that if you time a gut punch well enough, before the flurry, you get a free ko.
you can duck and with the right timing you can get a star punch each time

Mr. Dream is actually the fighter that replaced Mike Tyson after his contract ran out.
But other then that he fights the same way as Mike Tyson.
Mike was actually meant to get his own boxing game titled _Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch_ but an incident in 1991 made them cancel the project and it was rebranded for release as Power Punch II in 1992. However the original rom involving Mike Tyson was leaked.

i like how the Sandman fight sort of prepares you for the flash/uppercut combo. it feels slightly slower than the Tyson/Mr Dream flash/uppercut but i think it's a good way of introducing that type of attack

I was born in 1993 and I’m about to be 27 in august. When I was 4 years old my parents had an original Nintendo from the 80s and I had mike Tyson’s punch out and Zelda, spy hunter, top gun with the pilot stick, duck hunt with the gun, Mario games, contra, TMNT, you name it we had it. Along with the SEGA GENESIS with golden axe, sonic, shinobi. Then the Super Nintendo with donkey Kong country 1 and 2, star fox 🦊, Super Metroid. I won’t let anyone forget about the N64 with smash bro’s, Mario 64, cruisin world, and 007. These games and the time I grew up will forever be in my heart. I’m thankful we all get to enjoy them and talk about them together. God bless

It would have been great if Nintendo had made Mike Tyson have a special move similar to Bald Bull's move or Super Macho Man. But, rather than spinning around or charging backwards, Mike Tyson would bite your ear. If you didn't move correctly to get away from Tyson, your ear would then fall off.

only advice i would give would be that his first punch always happens at 6 seconds. after that, he sort of works on cycles but if you get the rhythm, i'm sure you will beat him soon

as a kid in the 80's- I loved this game! beating Tyson was easier than beating Super Macho Man (at least I thought so). Once the code was out - anyone could go to Tyson and fight him, so you got a lot of practice. You never really got to fight Super Macho Man as much, and his spin punch was tough!

Super Macho Man was such a pain. Though what I figured out was that you were apparently supposed to dodge his super spin punch by dodging to the right, as he would always eventually hit me/knock me down if I kept going left for some reason.
Whenever I try to hit his face immediately after he throws a punch as seen in the beginning he blocks me with his hands, what am I doing wrong?

Let me clear this up for some. When punch out got released for the NES the final boss was called Mr. Dream. Nintendo then made Mike Tyson's punch out, where they changed the final boss to Mike Tyson.
mr. dream came after tyson. tyson was replaced due to contract issues with nintendo using his likeness.
As I'm sure someone probably pointed out to you, you're wrong here. The arcade version was made first, with no dream or tyson. When the same team that made the arcade version was tasked with porting the arcade game to the NES, it was after the lead designer had already seen Tyson in action and was impressed by his raw power and skill, and he knew he wanted him as the final boss for his game. Two years after the successful release Tyson's contract ran out, and Nintendo didn't feel like renewing it because at this point Tyson had lost the title of Heavyweight champion in real life and was no longer seen as "the best."
In fact, there is an even earlier version of Punch-out!! that was made for winners of the Gold U.S Course Famicom tournament, though this version of the game was sold later at retail despite being seen as an inferior or incomplete version as it boasts graphical and sound bugs that are not present in Either the Mike Tyson or Mr Dream versions. On that note, this version also lacks either boss, making the final fight Super Macho Man instead. A lackluster end to the game if you ask me.
Eh kinda. They released a version in Japan without a final fight after Sandman, it was exclusive to the Nintendo Magazine rewards program. They were working on their Mike version at the time and that later came out here, after contract ran out they just added Mr. Dream.

Back here to study how to nail Mr Dream. I’m trying to complete the game without continuing and I always mess up on the uppercuts which cause me to lose
only real advice i would give is that his first punch happens at 6 seconds then has a rhythm to it. good luck!

I think he's harder than Tyson only because noticing the flash to his knockout punches are very similar to his own skin. At least with Tyson you can easily distinguish the flashes.
i never thought about it that way. once i learned how to beat Tyson, i learned the rhythm in timing over actually trying to react to his body flashing. interesting idea!

I’ve never thought about that before. The easy answer is that he was just a replacement for Mike Tyson which is true but it would be really cool to see Mr. Dream again. There’s nothing stopping him from appearing again.
