I beat Tyson so many times in this game when I was younger. This is still a game I reflect on a lot. I'm almost 38 now and it brings back a lot of memories of family and I getting together and playing the different game systems!
DUDE... IDEK where to start. This video made me a living. Let me explain: I saw this video while looking for a job in my senior year of high school. I thought the game looked fun, so I looked up some info on it and the console. I decided to buy an NES classic and mod it to get the original fight instead of Mr. Dream. One thing led to another, and I now make a living suturing ports and writing programs to mod the NES classic and other retro consoles. I.E, My second project ever was getting an N64 controller linked to an NES classic and writing a script to accept the input on an N64 emulator. I can't thank you enough.
More useful stuff: 1. Want to shave a free 20 seconds off of Round 1? Throw ten punches at his head as soon as the timer starts and then IMMEDIATELY dodge and counter. Now, instead of surviving to 1:30 it'll be like surviving to 1:10. 2. In his ten punches, you can just block the first and go for a body punch for a free star. Keep your block up until he starts doing his wink punches, then play like normal. 3. About what he said about wasting your star in Round 2, when you block the four punches he'll almost immediately go for an uppercut. Dodge this (and counter if you still have enough stars). After that, he'll go for another uppercut almost immediately. Throw five punches here and then star punch, it's practically guaranteed. 4. In Rounds 2/3 a good rule of thumb is that his uppercuts go for six punches (number of punches wasn't specified here). This isn't ALWAYS the case but it's a safe number. 5. If you're not going for the free 20 seconds from earlier remember that the first punch ALWAYS comes at 0:05 Round 1.
Oh and: 6. ALWAYS get up at the count of 9. You get up with the most health you could have gotten. You also can get knocked down (collectively) three times the entire match before you automatically just can't get back up no matter how much you mash. 7. If you dodged too early in Round 1 and know you won't have time to dodge again, Block (pressing down on the D-Pad), since it comes out much faster. Mac can survive with literally the lowest amount of health possible if you were initially at full health if he blocks any of the punches from before 1:30 Round 1. You'll die if he practically blows on you but you'll be alive for one more hit.
@@pokeanand -Great tips mate! I have just one small correction for the ppl. If you get knocked down 3 times in one round that's it, you're done, TKO. But if not all 3 in 1 rnd you can stand after the third knockdown but simply cannot get up after the 4th knockdown (collectively) Cheers!
Absolutely, it's tough to make it past round 3 and lose the decision :). This video is great btw, very practical and not too much fancy stuff for those looking for their first TKO against Mike!
I tried playing ninja gaiden on one of those retro video sites (emulator) and dang, it's sooo hard! The emulators are amazing if you haven't tried them before.
While i dont doubt games were hard then with limited lives and no checkpoints, have you seen modern games like elden ring or getting over it with bennet foddy?
That's because games can't be beaten in 1 sitting so they have to make it easy. Developers back in the day wanted an arcade experience at home & didn't know that saves or options were important.
For everyone who still needs some help, in round two he’ll delay before an uppercut, and once your done countering he will send one more uppercut in quick succession so just dodge immediately. If you are able to not anticipate after practice from the first round, than just notice the pause in punches and prepare for the uppercut. Hope I could help. I for one had a horrible time at first with round two because of the complete timing difference with hooks and uppercuts, and I didn’t notice the delay.
01:21 373 5963 is easily memorable numbers for Japanese people. Almost no one could forget the password in Japan maybe. Because that numbers can read " every one(373=みなさん), appreciate your efforts (5963=ごくろうさん) in Japanese obviously and absolutely they intended.
I first beat him 12 years ago after printing off an online strategy guide and trying all day. I remember becoming so frustrated, but I actually did win and it was all worth it I had way more time to waste as a 15 year old kid lol I can still do it a few years ago I went to a gaming convention definitely drew attention to myself once people noticed
Not mentioned: That part where you get a star from tyson in round 2.... You can knock him out if you hit him at the right time...rather than get the star.. You have to wait a second or so.
Coming back to this video years after beating Punch Out for the first time, cannot stress enough how much time this video saved me! Learning what Tyson does for how long in rounds 1 and 2 helped eliminate SO much of that trial and error this fight already takes! Thanks for making this!
Try beating this without looking up a youtube vid. Impossible. I would get decission wins & get lucky. Then I watched vids on it, 1st thing of his body flashing, I never noticed it before.
Makes sense that the more rounds you go with Tyson, the more likely you'll come out on top. Tyson, in real life, was always one to defeat his opponents quickly. He was never any good with drag out fights. That is ultimately why he lost in 10 rounds to Buster Douglas. He got worn out.
I beat him back in the 80's. I was the only one able to do this. Once you learn how to quick dodge ( opposite direction or dodging, or better yet, up direction ) you'll see the light. I did use the low health strategy on round 1, but I never knew that hitting him with left and right mattered when it comes to which direction Tyson uppercuts. Nice video.
Tyson was easy once you got through the 90 seconds of one punch knockdown uppercuts. Once I got that down, I found him easier than the previous opponent. Tyson's warning "tell" was easier.
Second round TKO is the way to go. Get his life really low by the end of the first but don't knock him down then when he comes out in the second with jabs block and go for body blows for a first knockdown. Then use the star punches you get from those to get him a second time. Stay on your A game and dodge punches and with some luck you'll be able to get him one more time before the round is over for that TKO. Beware if you have to go to the third round Tyson throws some deadly combos that will almost definitely put you on your back if you're not careful, that's why it's best to finish him in the second round.
This video's strategy: "Get to round 3 and keep doing what you did to get there." Actual strategy: In round one, Tyson's 1:30 worth of knockout uppercuts come in various timings. The first set of 5 uppercuts has relatively similar timing between uppercuts 1, 2, and 3. However, 4 is slightly delayed, and 5 is delayed a bit longer than 4. The second set of uppercuts is very similar, without as much delay on the 4th uppercut, and a SIGNIFICANT delay on the 5th. The third set will have almost no delay on the 5th uppercut, instead choosing to delay longer on the 6th (or 1st of the next cycle, depending on how you look at it). In round two, there are 5 sets of two jabs, which you can respond to with punches of your own if you move perfectly, but you're more advised to just avoid altogether. After which, he begins a set of hooks, the side of which is indicated by which eye he blinks. Use this eye indicator to dictate which hand you use to punch back with, for the most damage. Blah blah.
He didn't mention the points you need to win by decision if you can't beat the time. Seems 5000 points are required for a decision win. I haven't beat Tyson myself. But my 11 year old nephew did. I got a video on my channel if anyone wants to see it.
YES!! Finally! Thank you so much, I got a TKO on Mr. Dream tonight! This took a long time and the tutorial helped A LOT. I definitely recommend to anyone still struggling to defeat Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream.
One you get through the uppercuts in the first round, I always found it easier to beat Tyson than Super Macho Man. And they are easy because they are at regular intervals. At least usually.
You do know you can knock Mike Tyson out with one punch right.. Dodge all his punches catch him only when he blinks and game over.. and you're welcome.
I found out something, and I dunno how it's done. I punched him while his eyes were blinking. But instead of getting a star, it immediately knocked him down
A super easy strategy for round two. Instead of just blocking those first 10 jabs, hold down to block, as soon as you block immediately let go of down and hit punch to do a stomach jab. This does a good amount of damage and is a guaranteed star. So this will get you your first knockdown, if his health is super low to start, do a bunch of damage towards his second knockdown with the remaining punches, and you’ll have three stars ready to go instead of just the one where he blinks.
The jabs at the start of round 2; it's better to block them and counter with a body blow. Half the time he blocks you, half the time you get a star. His blocking you is inconsequential.
game came out when i was 10 and i beat it... lol. its one of those types of games where once you learn the patterns its easy. people are so lazy when it comes to games nowadays they look up games and how to play them before they even learn on their own. and to think 10 year olds could easily do this.. lol
Thanks so much, I've watched every video 10000 times and today I finally beat him without save states. Twice! Both times were TKOs in the second round.
I saw in the Game Grumps Let's Play that when Tyson/Mr. Dream blinks in Round 2, you can actually get a One Hit KO though I'm not sure when that timing is but you gotta hit at a certain point or you just get the star.
NO...at the beginning of the second round when he's throwing those quick jabs you can block and quickly counter with gut punches which always results in stars. I can get 3 before I run out of hearts. Then dodge the next two attacks and you are golden.
A really nice video, mate! I beat Mike Tyson many years ago when I got "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!" on my NES. My only alteration that I do is at the start of the 2nd round. When Tyson throws his jabs, I just block them and turn pink.
Hey thanks buddy!! Appreciate the kind words! That round 2 strategy is a good one. Always felt like it was more for advanced players to be able to pull it off. I usually get nervous and just play it safe with the dodges. It's majorly helpful to be able to pull it off though!
No problem, mate. The video did mention several things I didn't realize such as hitting Tyson with alternating jabs doing more damage and Tyson's eyes blink at the 2:30 mark in the 2nd round.
i haven´t seen any comments on what im about to say so i guess not many people has discovered it. anyway i found out that if you punch him right before he throws a punch when fast winking you can drop him even if he has full health, if you do it early, you only get a star.
Dodge when he flashes, Have him to little life at the end of round 1. Round 2 when you get stars, only do uppercuts when he does his hook punch. Punch once then uppercut. You should knock him down easily. Macho man & Sandman are a lot harder.
Great job! Back then word was you could only beat him in decision, but I recall always losing the decision myself. I see now you can knock him out if you are good enough. Tyson was crazy tough until you practiced a lot. Seemed impossibile at first. Great video!
I beat him a few years ago when I was 9 my dad got me into punch out and i would play hours at a day although I beat him by decision it still gave me chills took me like 4 hours
GameBomb! Haha, It's a pretty addicting sense of accomplishment, for sure! I've beaten him probably 100+ times in my life and I still get at least a little bit stoked every time.
Hell yeah!!! That's awesome to hear! Tyson is one hell of a challenge, but it really is a great feeling to finally beat him for the first time! Glad you got to experience it!
Round 2 u suggest block and hit him in the stomach fast and a free knock down also gets a free star with him having more health also there is a chance u will get an instant knockdown when he blinks in perfect timing u can beat him in the 2nd round like I did
Great video. I beat him by decision but not by tko but I should have tkoed but blew it. But I think rocky on the master system and beating Drago is harder by far but I beat him too with some luck it was the greatest
I beat him today for the first time after about 10 attempts at it. He wasn’t that hard to me idk. Granted I’ve been playing this game on and off for a decade so I had UA-cam and years worth of experience with the game that made all the difference in the world for me
***** Thanks man! I put more time into this one than probably any other video. Figured there's plenty of classically trained people who wouldn't mind checking this victory off their gaming bucket list.
I have never seen such finger speed! Its all about yo focus and finger speed if you aint got it then leave this game alone i beat everyone accept Mike Tyson in 30 years i never beat him WTF!🥊🥊🤦🏽♂️😭
I actually found Tyson to be easy to beat. For some reason I had the biggest problem with Super Macho Man. I had a hard time timing his swirly punch thing. I also had a tough time with the second Bald Bull for some reason. His bull rush move got me a lot.
If you dodge every punch without losing any energy in the first round the less energy he gets. Their is a pattern but hard to do you can tko him in 1 round I have done it 3 times its hard to do
Definitely the hardest part of the fight is making it past that 1:30 mark in round one. That took me forever to do as a kid. If you can do that the rest is a piece of cake...lol. I haven't attempted to try Mr. Dream on the NES Classic yet but The general opinion is most won't be able to beat him due to newer TV's even in game mode. I wonder if anyone has done it yet?
Incredible tutorial! I have all ready beat Mr Dream on Wii U Virtual Console version, but I want to beat him again. Then I found this video :) this will help so much!
believe it or not, there is a way to knock this guy down instantly. when he does that wink, delay somewhat and then hit him. he'll drop like a rock. i beat him earlier doing that and combined with another thing: you know how if an opponent gets up at the count of one, a star will instantly knock em down? Tyson is no exception. he did that to me, and I won! how did I get that star if I did that instant knock down on both winks? apparently, a delayed counter on the hooks can give you a star. I did that to him and won. if you don't believe me, try it your self. it will make you scream and shout and will have you pissing out your ass in anger but it's possible to instant knock down Tyson.
No you're definitely right! There are a handful of somewhat lesser known strategies against him that you more advanced players can exploit. With proper timing you can TKO him in the first round. But your margin of error is really slim. Overall I wanted to make this video for more beginner to intermediate players to beat him for the first time with some of the easiest strats to use.
FafGuy yeah i know. when i beat him i squealed with joy. i seriously didn't even know you could knock him down by punching him when he blinks. i also was surprised by the fact that you can get stars by a delayed punch on the jabs. and that's how i beat Tyson!
I saw him in Vegas and tried your strategy....needless to say I have no teeth now.
Practice makes perfect! Don't give up!
kevinerosa Your a funny guy aren't you

This video's strategy: "Get to round 3 and keep doing what you did to get there."
Actual strategy:
In round one, Tyson's 1:30 worth of knockout uppercuts come in various timings. The first set of 5 uppercuts has relatively similar timing between uppercuts 1, 2, and 3. However, 4 is slightly delayed, and 5 is delayed a bit longer than 4. The second set of uppercuts is very similar, without as much delay on the 4th uppercut, and a SIGNIFICANT delay on the 5th. you have to have at least 5000 points :)
+RxRamon I'm kinda the flip-side of that to be honest. Winning a decision is nice and all, but I like to leave no doubt and finish with a KO.

So this will get you your first knockdown, if his health is super low to start, do a bunch of damage towards his second knockdown with the remaining punches, and you’ll have three stars ready to go instead of just the one where he blinks.
finally i beat him, he was a nigthmare, but thanks for te guide

The jabs at the start of round 2; it's better to block them and counter with a body blow. Half the time he blocks you, half the time you get a star. His blocking you is inconsequential.

i haven´t seen any comments on what im about to say so i guess not many people has discovered it. anyway i found out that if you punch him right before he throws a punch when fast winking you can drop him even if he has full health, if you do it early, you only get a star.
The Rocky 4 training can also be heard in the back round
It took me a good.... 14 times but I eventually got him!!! Thanks m8!
Rather than dodging his jabs at the start of round 2, it's much more effective to block them and quickly counter with left gut punches for stars.
This is really tough, but also works on the play choice 10 version.
Dodge when he flashes, Have him to little life at the end of round 1. Round 2 when you get stars, only do uppercuts when he does his hook punch. Punch once then uppercut. You should knock him down easily.
Macho man & Sandman are a lot harder.
his 3rd punch in round 1 is always so random
Great job! Back then word was you could only beat him in decision, but I recall always losing the decision myself. I see now you can knock him out if you are good enough. Tyson was crazy tough until you practiced a lot. Seemed impossibile at first. Great video!
I'f you block his uppercut on round 1 it won't instantly knock you down it'll just take alot of health away
Short answer is, Git Gud
I beat him a few years ago when I was 9 my dad got me into punch out and i would play hours at a day although I beat him by decision it still gave me chills took me like 4 hours
Holy freaking crap this video helped me so much i beat mike tyson 8 times ever scince i watched this video
+GameBomb! Hell yeah! That's what I like to hear!
i just played it again 2 times now its 10 times
GameBomb! Haha, It's a pretty addicting sense of accomplishment, for sure! I've beaten him probably 100+ times in my life and I still get at least a little bit stoked every time.
+Loud Guy Media also im only 9 years old so thats cool cus im young
now im 10 and i beat mike tyson like 60 times
Hey thank you so much for this video! I beat Tyson earlier today. Really boosted my self confidence! Thank you so much for this video!
Hell yeah!!! That's awesome to hear! Tyson is one hell of a challenge, but it really is a great feeling to finally beat him for the first time! Glad you got to experience it!
Thought I could never do it! You've made the best how to beat Tyson video I've seen, Great video!
I am trying right now after 13 hours to get to him, hopefully it doesn't take 13 more :D
Thank you for the guide
Most helpful guide ever thanks :)
Round 2 u suggest block and hit him in the stomach fast and a free knock down also gets a free star with him having more health also there is a chance u will get an instant knockdown when he blinks in perfect timing u can beat him in the 2nd round like I did
Can you teach me how to defeat super Mach man in super punch out for the snes I got a problem
I've been playing this lately 😂 Nostalgia. When Tyson freeze and blink that's that coke kicking in 😂
Great video. I beat him by decision but not by tko but I should have tkoed but blew it. But I think rocky on the master system and beating Drago is harder by far but I beat him too with some luck it was the greatest
I don’t think you can quick dodge in the switch port, so I can’t beat him
I beat him today for the first time after about 10 attempts at it. He wasn’t that hard to me idk. Granted I’ve been playing this game on and off for a decade so I had UA-cam and years worth of experience with the game that made all the difference in the world for me
one of the toughest boss in videogames ever hands down
1. Know the pattern
2. Know the quick dodge
Once you got that down, you can TKO him in round 3
Mike Tyson winks before he throws certain punches.
So much childhood win. Well done!
***** Thanks man! I put more time into this one than probably any other video. Figured there's plenty of classically trained people who wouldn't mind checking this victory off their gaming bucket list.
Well the time you spent paid off on this one. May have to go find my old SNES next time I'm home!
Those guys you mentioned are harder.
If you dodge every punch without losing any energy in the first round the less energy he gets. Their is a pattern but hard to do you can tko him in 1 round
I have done it 3 times its hard to do
Definitely the hardest part of the fight is making it past that 1:30 mark in round one.
I used to beat him all the time when I was a child
believe it or not, there is a way to knock this guy down instantly.
when he does that wink, delay somewhat and then hit him. he'll drop like a rock. i beat him earlier doing that and combined with another thing: you know how if an opponent gets up at the count of one, a star will instantly knock em down?
I know
I remember this code fron the 80s never forgot it🤣🤣
Omg I never knew I had game mode on my tv! Sweet!
FOCUS !
I beaten this when it initially came out in the mid 80's.. I was a teenager..
