The films brought us a dark and evil Bree -- but Tolkien calls it "friendly" and "familiar"! And Barliman Butterbur has a simple cameo. And then nearly the entire "Strider" chapter is removed--we have no real information on him by the time the Hobbits leave Bree with him in the films!
In our extended episode (available for our members -- theonering.com/members) we get into even more detail:
    * The missed opportunity of Barliman Butterbur's Brewery
    * Nob's a Hobbit... but is Bob?!
    * Merry survived the black breath in Bree WITHOUT athelas... how?
    * What's Celebrimbor's fate in The Rings of Power?

I was very disappointed to see so little of Bree, and all in the dark/rain. I think that was intentional, to drive home the danger and gravity of the Black Rider threat with the limited time the movie had. But I would've loved to see daytime Bree, Bill Ferny, more of meeting Bill the Pony, etc. Along with the journey through the Old Forest, meeting Tom B, the Barrow-downs. So much that we missed!

Hi I'm a newcomer here, and I'm definitely enjoying the content! Perhaps I'm in the minority of your audience, but for what it's worth, I'm actually primarily interested in your coverage of the differences between the books and films. This is probably because I'm facinated with the art of Tolkien adaptations, which when done well is itself a very subcreative and richly rewarding process.

Glad you're enjoying this series! It IS fun to go through the changes... It's been 20 years since we dug deep into them, so it's interesting to go through it again with a finer-toothed comb.
We'll eventually finish the changes--it's just going to take us quite awhile :)

The hobbits should not be surprised about pint serving sizes. I was just reading The Hobbit to my daughter last night, and noticed that Bilbo served Balin beer in a pint glass after he arrived for the unexpected party.

Another thing about the Black Riders in the hobbits' bedchambers is that the scene seems to be another homage to Ralph Bakshi's LotR.

Tolkien has all of these songs and poems in his works because during the time frame that he set his stories in there were no schools and most of the people were illiterate. It is true that in times past people learned and remembered things through songs and short poems though apparently elves had a longer memory and had much longer poems and songs.

It's so true!! One can listen to an audio book of The Hobbit in the same amount of time it would take to watch all three movies...and the audio book would be time much better spent 😃

I've lately come across people who have started shitting on Jackson's trilogy. I don't know what happened, but people have started to hate them more and more. It's mainly the book purists who cry and complain when everything doesn't get put into the movie. Yet they don't understand that books and movies are two different mediums. There are some things that are great for a book, but they might not be great for a movie.

Exactly, so have I… like they are different forms of expressing something. Translating something word for word will make a movie BORING. Like you say, they are fundamentally different experiences. Comparing them is fun, but that shouldn’t be how the movie should graded.

The Hobbit is my favorite Tolkien book. I was quite disappointed by what was done with the Live Action/CG adaptation... but the Rankin Bass adaptation was fairly good.
The way I usually enjoy the Hobbit is with a 4 hour long abridged audiobook- it isn't as delightfully detailed as the book, but it covers all the important events and properly characterizes everyone in the story. Being able to start listening to it while painting miniatures or sketching and hear both the start and end of it on a weekday evening makes for a very digestible experience.
With the Live Action film, they could have made an excessively detailed 9 hour film to the point of being a 1:1recreation of every passage of the book and I would have considered it poor judgement on the part of the filmmakers. A good adaptation succinctly relates all the important information and ambiance in a way which suits the medium. The Jackson Hobbit films manage to do worse by not only failing to represent the characters and events of the novel, there was enough filler unfaithful to the original story that was added to expand what would have been a comfortable 3 hour film into 9 hours of cinema... too little butter scraped over too much bread indeed.

I find the reveal of Bilbo's autorship of the poem at Elrond's Council to be very heartwarming. Gandalf had to describe to Frodo a stranger he was supposed to trust, and the way he went about describing him was by using Bilbo's poem.
Speaking of which, I gather you'll address it when you get to the Council, but one thing I like about the first movie is how Jackson chose to move further certain dialogue lines at the begining of the book rather than scraping them. At the inn, when Strider says his real name to Frodo, he says something among the lines of "My name is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and if with my life or with my death i can help you in your quest, I will". In the movie, the second half of the line is said at the Council right after Frodo volunteers to take the Ring to Mordor. I love that line, both in the book and in the movie.

Most of the people who are so wild about the LOTR movies never read the books. If you never read the books the movies look pretty good. You think, “how imaginative!” “How original!” Of course the original ideas were Tolkien’s. Try just added their own story.
I realize that they needed to cut parts out but Jackson and his people wrote in huge parts of their own story. If you have to cut things out that is one thing but adding a bunch of your own ideas is just prideful bs. To say that what Jackson put in was good is fantasy. Jackson better than Tolkien? BS.
Jackson just was not good at showing good things. He was all about making miniatures and horror movies before he did LOTR and that is what he turned these movies into…a dark monster movie. He said that Tolkien’s heroes were, “too good.” That is a sad statement.
The entire series of movies was like a trailer for the books. I know that they had to cut things out but they did not have fill in over half of the movies with what they thought that the story should be about.
