- While it does not possess great power, the Ring of Barahir would play an important role to Aragorn, his ancestors, and Finrod Felagund - brother of Galadriel!

Faramir’s grandson part gave me chills .
I wonder if Faramir and Eowyn’s son Elboron married one of Aragorn and Arwen’s daughters, and thus the grandson Barahir wrote the king and queen’s tale partially because he was their descendant.
Why? I don’t understand
Bro, for some reason it gave me chills too. Powerful history.
Same! It was the perfect end to the video
I broke there too, it was powerful narration
Forget the Rings of Power, I wanna see a TV series based around the Ring of Barahir.
They would ruin it, and make it all about some girl boss that was never mentioned in the source material.
@@rustyshackleford3316 you might be right, but wouldn't you still watch it? I know I would, on the slim chance it might be awesome
You don't.....they would screw it up...
Forgetting Rings of Power would be awesome.
@@rustyshackleford3316
And whatever the writers' intent, she could very easily turn out to be as bad as Fëanor but without the consequences.
It is a beautiful contrast to the One Ring, Barahir's ring was used unite peoples and families in common against evil, and The One Ring separating itself from all others and dominating all life to serve its master.
When you think of it: The Ring Of Barahir never got lost throughout three ages, survived two apocalypses, traveled twice over the sea, and got passed over many generations
The Ring of Barahir is such an interesting contrast with Sauron's ring. It was created long before the One Ring and survived the One Ring by an untold number of years. It was not imbued with anything like a tangible power to dominate the wills of living things, but one could say that as a symbol of love - even self-sacrificial love - it was a locus of a hidden, secret power far greater.
Don't forget loyalty, bravery, and honour!!
Not a magic ring, just an undying symbol of love between two peoples. ❤
Beren’s poem to Thingol is legendary another great vid NOTR
It's part of the Lay of Leithian. Tolkien wrote a whole poem about Beren and Luthien.
@@zStC1
Have you read the whole thing in one sitting? I couldn't.😂
I love how lotr has all of these old relics and characters from the old first and second age stories. It is a perfect collection of all of Tolkien’s stories
Indeed. Much like how Samwise, referring to Galadriel's phile, talks about how he and Frodo are simply taking part in the same ever-continuing stories of old. 😎☮️
The Ring of Barahir is my favorite heirloom item in Tolkiens universe.
I admire Finrod for upholding his oath, even though he knew the consequences, would be his doom
That is a real man or elf for me
"My word weighs more than any gems or gold"
I bought a replica in New Zealand in 2004. Still have it in its box...
Come on man, just give it back to aragorn
How much was it? Tnks
Knowing that Aragorn ended up with a ring that had passed through so many hands. Hands that had to deal with immense struggles, and some who didn’t, a ring that holds such history is a beautiful thought
I’d like to think that Sauron thought of this ring and the man that gave him so much trouble when he was forging his own.
when Aragorn declared himself to Sauron in the Palantir was he wearing this ring? I picture Aragorn brandishing Anduril firm in his grasp, the Ring of Barahir glinting in defiance of Sauron - I bet the Dark Lord was seething.
@@Airehcaz Easily one of my favorite parts of the whole trilogy and this never occurred to me until now.
@@Airehcazif I remember correctly, Aragon gave the ring to Arwen for their engagement
@@nenetubiduba3628
Matt said that.. at the betrothal.
Intriguing how diametrically opposed are the symbolic meaning behind these 2 rings: the original a symbol forged in the Undying Lands that inspired undying, self-sacrificial love and faithfulness between different peoples vs. the Mt. Doom and middle-earth forged ring of sheer domination and exploitive raw power that has the verry opposite effect on all who are near or involved with it.
there must have been some magic in that ring that it was never lost and perfect fit each owner down the generations
Typical for elven craft.
The “never lost”, I feel like, is more an indication of how prized it was to those who had it; just showing it to an elf was evidence of how mortals, though individually short-lived, could remember and honor their bonds even through the ages.
The fitting everyone part probably was some cool trick of craft you could only fully appreciate if you’d actually worn it.
It's an enduring symbol of the friendship between Elves and Men, even in the days when the two races had little to do with each other anymore.
Finrod Felagund is my favorite character in the first age (maybe second to Fingolfin). He doesn't have the pride or the hubris of the other elvenkings, and has this unfailing love and loyalty for the race of Men. His self-sacrifice and memory has so much pathos in it. That's why it's sad to see that he sacrificed himself for Beren, but also gratifying that Tolkien says that he "walks beside his father Finarfin in Eldamar." He was re-embodied by the Valar for his great love and loyalty, just like Glorfindel was for his unfailing courage, as he sacrificed himself to slay the Balrog pursuing the refugees from the Fall of Gondolin.
I can just imagine the people of Beor's tribe awakening to the fair voice of Felagund, as he found their rude harp, and sang songs of Eldamar and Tirion of long ages gone. I wonder what awoke in their hearts, even if they didn't understand the words.
My fiance gave it to me for my birthday last year after I gave her the Evenstar pendant. We're wearing ours on our wedding this year, which we chose to be as close to Arwen and Aragorn's wedding as we could make it 😊
Tolkien champions, you guys are!
When the ring came back to Arwen and they way you put how after countless years and multiple ages of Arda it was again back in the line of its creator i was welling up! You're a master storyteller, sir🎉
Barahir being the name of the writer who accounts the possession of the ring, is just brilliance.
In the Special Extended Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Saruman perceives Aragorn's true identity through the ring through its description by Grima Wormtongue.
More like Grima Eagle-eyed, giving such a precise description of the ring after only spotting on it once ^^
Man, there is so much more character and lore development in the extended edition of LOTR. It really made me delve into the rest of JRR's works and maps and legends and language.
When you realize that the One ring is a baby (in terms of age) compared to this one.
It strikes me how it survived in the face of such hate, pain, and sorrow. It has no magical gift like the rings of power, but itself signals those of power.
@@kineticstar just like the hobbits.
“The conclusion of thousands of years of peril, war, and love” sigh..good stuff
Simply stunning storytelling. I love how this item has its own grand story throughout the ages of elves and men. Not only does it speak voluminously about Tolkien’s grand vision for his world but it serves as a tome around which stories like yours can be used to weave the tapestry of these two great families. Thank you for taking the time to help us all appreciate this unique relic and how it was used and revered for millennia.
I remember you asking for video suggestions around about a year ago - this was my suggestion at the time. Amazing to see now and up to your usual amazing standards. Thank you!
My friend, your voice, mixed with the lore, the background music, and the graphics, really opens up Tolkien's Universe for me. FWIW, I think Tolkien would approve of this channel and tip his hat to you. Or perhaps, lift his pipe to you. I know I do.
Another video that I am highly grateful for. Two things that your videos, most always, bring to my mind. One is the vastness and genius of Tolkien. Two is how well researched you are and how well you do your job. Thank you and Cheers to the Faithful!
Two serpents, two families. The emerald signifying the culmination of it's promise. Thus, like the ring itself, the loop closes.
The symbolism is remarkable.
The fact that you feature art by Anke Eissmann ❤ I have an original print of hers of Arwen on my wall 🤩
the barahir ring next to the narsil sword, are few objects that survived the fall of Beleriand
Just another terrific story woven by Tolkien.
Fantastic narration, thank you very much. The way you tell these stories really brightens up my day ❤
Alright... All these videos are good. But, this one is wildly pitch perfect. What an incredible story laden with history over thousands of years. The clincher of Barahir at the end?!? Well read and well done.
Your videos are always excellent, but this one was above and beyond.
Many thanks.
God bless you and your work sir.😇😇😇 I deeply admire your work and passionate narration and dedication to your work. Respect from Croatia Europe 💙
Bravo! Nothing like hearing the great stories told aloud!!!
one of the best videos so far. the ending gave me goosebumps.
One of your finest videos. Surreal and Overwhelming.
Excellent production as always!
I just love watching your videos! So relaxing! And then when I've watched through once I put them on when I'm going to sleep cause it really helps!
Love it! Thanks so much for watching! 😁
I do the same thing, it's really helped with my insomnia.
Awesome rendition of this tale. Thanks so much. I always learn great things from watching this channel!
I still can't get over how beautiful and well made Tolkien's poetry is..
Wow! This is damn beautiful. The ending gave me the chills. Such an amazing journey. Thanks for this!
Love this channel so much.
"It has no power..."
It has the best power.
Melian deserves her own video!
tolkien's works are so in depth, it's crazy how one man's imagination has given us this fantasy which we all love dearly.
Thank you for this lovely and moving video. Well done.
One of your best videos recently. Could you do more videos on numenor e.g aldarion
Would you ever consider doing a video series on continuing all of your epilogues as full "what if" videos themselves? They all end on such interesting and hopeful details that I always want to hear more of the story.
Thanks for uploading this on my birthday.
In any adaptation of _Beren of Luthien_ the Ring of Barahir should be the same version worn by Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) in Peter Jackson's _Lord of the Rings_ Trilogy. That's why I want Warner Bros. to buy the rights to the _Silmarillion._ 🙂
I bought a Sterling Silver version of Aragorn’s ring online from Noble Collection back in 2006. Still have it!!! Never wear it though. Didn’t know it had something to do with the LOTR lore. Just thought it looked cool.
His name.
Was Barahir.
*mic drop*
Hardest ending to a video yet.
Also, Beren has got BARS.
Yes!!! I've been waiting for this video on the Ring of Barahir.
'Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come. In this place, I will abide, and my heirs, unto the ending of the world. - Elendil's Oath (translated)
Too bad in the original movies and DVDs they didn't subtitle Aragorn's song at his crowning, or other Elvish/Dwarven spoken parts. I think many didn't understand the profound meaning.@@kineticstar
I had been curious about the artifact for a long time. I'm very glad to know the lore behind it now! Thanks!
These are brilliantly presented visual essays. Many thanks.
I think Arwen would have past the ring to their son, probably as a coronation gift. Quite the legacy for a non magic ring eh? Great video Matt! I'm still anxiously awaiting your video of you in the Dwarvish makeup! 🤘☺️🖖🇨🇦🍻
That Ending...... My God.
The ring of Barahir was the most ancient artifact in Middle Earth by the time of the War of the Ring. It, along with the Orthanc and Minas Tirith stones, were the very last things created in Valinor that remained in Middle Earth, long after the Silmarils were claimed by the land, the sea, and the sky.
Why do I say most ancient, when we know not either it nor the palantiri were made...? Well, there's no direct evidence, but...the ring figures into the very earliest writings of Tolkien, the Lay of Leithian, which would be part of the foundation of the Silmarillion. In fact, Tolkien's word for the Noldor was his original word for the elves: "Gnomes." And when, as of yet, Finrod was the name Tolkien later changed to Finarfin, the father of Finrod Felagund.
The palantiri by contrast, were not created until several years later.
Thin evidence? Perhaps. But it's what I like to believe.
A beautiful story, when you stop to think about it, and your summary at the end did it justice!
I feel that Faramir’s grandson Barahir must be the son of one of Aragorn and Arwen’s daughters too.
Thank you for another great episode
Not normally a Jewelry man, but I would certainly wear a replica of the Ring of Barahir.
I *JUST* went through all this with someone the day before you posted the video! Strangely coincidental!
I've heard from many Tolkien fans who are MUCH more knowledgeable than I am with the LOTR universe that this ring is the greatest treasure. That it has the power not to destroy but unite for good, has a history which is incredibly vast, and respected by even the highest royalty. That it's even more important than the One Ring. I've never argued their opinions.
You need to read the books more. Your friends are messing with you. It was made in the light of Telperion and Laurelin, in Eldamar, but it is not magical at all. It's just creative jewelry.
@@Enerdhil That's not the point. It doesn't need to be magical to have importance. It's like Batman. He has no superpowers, but he's no less important than Superman. He's a symbol. That's the way I see the ring. You don't have to agree with my statement. I could care less. It's just what I agree with, my opinion. Besides, I never said they were my friends. And I've read the books, a few times in fact. I said I was a fan. Go elsewhere and piss in someone else's cheerios and talk down to them.
@@furrybogard9724
Interesting that I have never heard something you have heard a lot of fans say. Sorry if I offended you. It wasn't intentional. I just find it hard to believe.
@@Enerdhil I appreciate that. It's no worries. I'm just a simple fan of the universe, nothing more. But I have somewhat of an understanding of lore, more than most of the casual movie viewers who've never read the works. It sounded like someone was making an assumption when they've never met me, it came off a bit snarky. When I said I had heard it from people at conventions, these fans know the novels front to back by heart. They can speak Elvish. Heck they can even draw maps to almost entirety from memory. They're the ones who've said it to me, and it made sense. That's why I said what I did.
You obviously know a lot about the lore. So when I read that those experts said, "this Ring is the greatest treasure. That it has the power not to destroy but unite for good, has a history which is incredibly vast, and respected by even the highest royalty," I am honestly confused where they got some of those ideas.
The Ring of Barahir is definitely not the greatest Ring in the Legendarium. The One Ring holds that distinction
Even if Fëanor made it as a birthday present for Finrod, that wouldn't necessarily give it any special powers.
Vilya, Nenya, and Narya all have power to preserve Elven Realms, but that is because Sauron's power is imbued within those rings. The same is true for all the other Rings of Power. What power or Whose power is in the Ring of Barahir?
It is true that it is a great treasure for anyone who owns it. Its history IS incredibly vast, going back to the Years of the Trees. And it is definitely respected by the highest royalty, especially the King of Gondor and Arnor, not to mention Galadriel. All those things I agree with.
This is our family's favorite channel to watch together every Saturday. Thank you for the wonderful content that you have shared with the world.
Excellent work NOTR
Thks Nerd❤
God bless your works
Tolkien's work is so beautiful.. thanks for this amazing video!! Greatest channel in UA-cam
beautiful story and beautiful storytelling
Cheers NOTR!
So, you think you've found Barahir's heir?
"So, Gandalf Greyhame thinks he has found the lost King of Gondor? He's a fool - that line was broken long ago.". Upon further review...... 😉
This video has got me very emotional 🥹♥️
Incredible video brother, keep up the great work! We all appreciate the work you do.
Just found you! Really appreciate your work :)
Welcome to the channel! Glad to have you!
Dude, that was SO good!! And I had no idea that faramir's grandson was named Barahir, and was the author of the the story in the appendices
Awesome video as usual!
Really great narrative. Thanks.
Incredible quality for your videos omg
This is one of my favourite heirlooms in Middle Earth.
Nice work dude thanks
9:59 The Ring of Barahir looks like a Ring of Slytherin 😂
Crazy amount of information in this. Where is all of pulled from? Really impressive. The artwork and images also are impressive.
Such an amazing video guys! Was just like watching a movie. Such a great tale from Middle Earth
And I wear mine everyday 🫡
Great video I always wanted more lore on this ring
Noticed the NEW EDITING. Absolutely Awesome.
Finrod Feligund was the greatest of the Noldor. Next to Aragorn & Theoden he is my favorite elf.
I did not mean to say that the 2 men are Noldor. Aragorn is a decendant of the edain. The Dunedain ranger decendant of the faithful of Numeanor
I've been waiting this video for long time mann😭
Was waiting for this episode. I am also still waiting for the Episode on Forodwaith.
The Rings of Power covered Forodwaith in the First Season.🤪😂

I don't know nor i remember how i come across Lord of the Rings series but i am Truly Honored to know it and learn. It holds something so dear in my Heart
This was wonderfully told. I got chills at the end
To me this is the coolest object in Tolkien's legendarium. The throughline of it being passed down through the ages highlights my favorite parts of Tolkien's story. And I think he intentionally made it that way. If you follow that ring you follow the true heroes of his story.
Just last night I read the Chapter "Of Beren and Lúthien" of "The Silmarillion" for the first time and there mention the Ring and the Snakes and I know it that was Aragon Ring! and Men the Love story of Beren and Lúthien is one of the kind!!
This Ring has made physical contact with Melkor himself that should tell you enough about how much this Ring has gone Through
I imagine Galadriel always looking at Aragorn wearing the ring and remembering her brother.
If this was my history class in high-school, I'd have done way better. My heart and mind goes where my passion lies.
The Ring of Barahir could be an early lesser Ring of power. A Ring of power with Magic that it contains from when it was created in the Undying Lands.
Hallo sir..can you discuss about Sceptre of Númenor.......
💯 Beautifully told
Crazy to think how long a single object is kept safe. Also want to mention again a hopeful soon personal Valar ranking video 😊 I am so curious to hear who your favorite Valar are and why.
Example: Aule is my favorite because he created the Dwarves, yet had 3 deciples turn to evil - so there is conflict there. I could go on and on, but we want to hear you do that!
