The first REAL dangers outside of the Shire were cut from the films. So, how much did we REALLY lose by not having The Old Forest or Old Man Willow in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films?
In our extended episode (available for our members -- theonering.com/members) we talk more about these changes, and also:
    * What about other evils in Middle-earth? Did Jackson do a disservice by removing them?
    * Losing the depth of the character of Middle-earth IS a loss!
    * Why do forests have SO much character in Middle-earth?

The nail is a pipe nail used to tamp tobacco. If you don't tamp the ash in a pipe your flame will quickly extinguish itself.

There's a fairly obvious reason for Sam to resist Old Man Willow and the spell of the woods: *He's the designated gardener!* He's familiar with and fond of plants, so Old Man Willow's malice can't faze him as much as it does the others.

Gandalf went straight from Orthanc to Theoden's hall where he got Shadowfax then rode north. I don't think he stopped at rivendell before his encounter with the ring wraiths on weathertop. So either he had his old staff with him, or he brought down the lightning without it. I think the former is more authentic to the role his staff played to his ability to use magic. AND he put his mark on a stone at weathertop. As we learned in the Hobbit, he uses his staff to scratch runes onto things. /mic drop

Two things regarding the Nazgul's power in Hobbiton. Tolkien said that the Nine were more powerful together, but also the distance from Sauron needs to be considered as well. So Frodo was affected because he was stabbed but none of the other hobbits were seriously hurt (Black Breath 'poison'). They were struck with intense fear but nothing that left them bedridden afterwards like in Minas Tirith. The battle in Minas Tirith had all the Nazgul in close proximity acting together in the battle under the command of the Witch King but also under the watchful Eye of Sauron. And we know how much of an effect that watchful eye and overwhelming presence has in the last battle at the gate. There when Sauron's attention was taking away the whole army immediately felt it and lost morale. They looked into the eyes of their enemies (Aragorn's army) and actually felt fear, which they hadn't when Sauron's presence was there. So it makes a big difference I think that the Nine were so far away, and the fact that all the Nine were sent means something too when their target was only a little hobbit in a village with no actual warriors to defend it.

Gandalf lost his Staff in Desolation of Smaug. Sauron destroyed it. Radagast then gave Gandalf his Staff in The Battle of the Five Armies. Gandalf had Radagast's Staff in Lord of the Rings. (Movie version of events) I'd be interested to know if this is the way it happened in the Books.

Minor corrections: it is Merry who takes a midnight stroll in Bree and meets either one or two Nazgul. They have dealings with Bill Ferny, what about the effect on him? And Nob (a hobbit) frightens them off with a shout. And Merry does get the Black Breath from the Witch-King but it's a delayed effect; he is walking when Pippin finds him but eventually has to be healed by Aragorn.
Gandalf 1.0's staff is hawthorn, a highly magical wood. This is shown by Frodo's song in Lorien:
An old man in a battered hat
who leaned upon a thorny staff
However, by the time he heals Theoden his staff is of ash. Given that, it's a puzzle how he holds on to Glamdring through all his adventures -- what's the baggage allowance on Eagle Air?

Too bad the Rings of Power didn't just do the books like you suggested. They could be even more lazy since they are just copying the books and could reuse Jackson's costumes and set pieces.
