While I do see the value in Pot of Greed, I do prefer Graceful Charity more since one of my summons depends on having certain monsters in my graveyard.

I love how in the early days of Yu Gi Oh, so many of the spell cards were completely broken (even by today's standards), but most of the monster cards were (at least by today's standards) pretty much unplayable.
its the same in every card game funny enough. Magics early creatures are garbage compared to black lotus and the power 9. Pokemons early trainer cards are busted draw power to draw into what? basic pokemon
I think these cards weren't broken when they came out precisely because there weren't any strong monsters that could fully take advantage of their effects. They only became broken when those stronger monsters were released. Back when Konami designed those cards, they thought that paying life points and sending cards to your graveyard were actual downsides.

I decided to peer into the set list for Alpha; besides not actually having a lot of creatures, there's a nice handful that are still recognizable today as they're playable still. Ofc no one's playing lord of the pit anymore but the mans producing creatures and lord effects are definitely still welcome somewhere in the game.
@@ich3730 Yeah true. I can't understand who thought that Time Walk was a good idea. Even in early 90s Magic. Force of Will is still one of the the best card in every format it's legal and even its more balanced Reprint in form of Force of Negation sees a massive amount of play.
I think that was sort of the point. You (the player, duelest, whatever) were casting spells to support the monsters that you were summoning. I think it was an RP kind of thing. Most monsters were normal monsters that had to beat over other things to get you a victory, so spell cards had to be good.

I just got back into the game again after 7 years. Nice to see they finally added more stuff for certain meta decks. Still waiting too see if they upgrade X-Sabers, since that was my go to deck. Was super fast, and super strong back then. But now, it needs support from other arch types. But anyways, V-Dragon was really easy to get out and win, along with other Monsters that needed 3 monsters for tribute. In fact, from what I've seen, it's really super easy now to bring out any monster that needs 3 tributes
Then you draw 2 pot of greed cards, each causing you to draw 2 cards meaning you would draw an extra 4 more pots of greed in total, then you draw 8 cards, then 16, then 32, then 64.....

It STILL didn't age well. Spellbook of Judgement came back on the OCG and has done NOTHING, and is very likely to come back on the TCG as well in a couple of weeks.
So basically: Trap cards are too slow to see actual play But if you make them faster they are too strong ... Broken game mechanic? The way I see it konami broke their own game by overdoing graveyard effects, which made the game continousely faster and faster until it reached a point where an activation in the "next turn" was already considered too slow ... what the hell man

What you have to understand is the fact that Yu-Gi-Oh card game has been there for like 20 years. Everytime they release new cards, they have to make them stronger than the last cards that they released, otherwise there would be no point in buying new cards, meaning Konami would not make money. So when you have game that has been out for like 20 years, you will have to start releasing "broken" cards and with time (20 years worth of time) it will come to the point where the game mechanics that were thought of at the beginning (trap cards) might become "slow" compared to what the meta game is.
@ Yeah no, of course some sort of power creep HAS to happen, i fully understand (and actually support) that. New cards with powerful effects keep the game interesting after all. What I dont understand is how the developers and smart heads over there at konami can even let it happen that players now borderline consider the graveyard as a second hand. As I said, they just went overboard with the graveyard effects imo

If someone attacked me directly with victory dragon, I would honestly let the attack go through just because of the trouble they went through just to get it out and clear my board.
There was an autistic kid at the shop I used to play at that would play VD. The one time he managed to get it out on me we ended up in time cause he couldnt get through my Spirit Reaper. I ended up winning cause he had no removal for it. And this is also back in 2009ish for clarity.
I'm surprised butterfly dagger never got updated version to say "by an opponent's effect" or something to limit how many times it could come back per turn.
I guess they don't see the point since by today's standard it would be poo. Not that it was good back then outside of combo either. Mage Power was far better

To be fair, the rules are really finicky with a lot of cards, and when you’re in a duel you don’t want to stop and spent a solid minute mulling over each card that’s played

There was a time when the graveyard was just that: a collection of destroyed monsters and used-up spells/traps. A card sent to the graveyard was as definite disadvantage. But soon the effects that can recycle cards from the graveyard became so commonplace, they came up with the concept of "removing cards from play", which later became known as "banishment". Now, however, we have cards that can reliably recycle banished cards as well, so I wonder what'll be next. A new term like "utterly eradicating" cards, maybe? :P
Yeah they just gave too many revive resummon options. Should of just fixed those and be done rather than making a whole knew mechanic and concept to be then missused again. Its a hole that just keeps diggin. Simple fix less revive cards/effects.
The funny thing about Painful Choice, is that when you look at it you just think "oh, it's an old card that's broken today because of the changes in meta". Except no. It was already played to abuse graveyard effects in the original anime. Not even tournament play, the frigging anime. This thing has always been kind of busted, it's just better than ever now.

If it was A trap card yeah if it’s a spell then no. If it’s a Spell you’ll be able to thin out your deck instantly by choosing cards you don’t need and Getting to add one card from your deck to your hand. Too strong.
Nah, cards like that take too long to resolve cuz the player spends 10 minutes choosing his 5 cards, then you have to spend another 10 minutes selecting the card they keep.
I think Temple of the Kings is a pretty underrated card. It's an unlimited continuous spell card that has a similar effect to Makyura the Destroyer, in which trap cards can be activated the turn they are set. It also allows you to summon The Mystical Beast of Serket, and can be sent to the graveyard along with Serket to summon any monster from your deck or any fusion monster from your extra deck. I use it in my sphinx deck.
Card of safe return is such a good combo with Imperial iron wall plaguespreader quillbolt hedgehog Soul Absorbing Bone Tower Zombie World Because You can Mill 3 for Every Zombie monster you special summon whilst never decking out because you can return 1 monster to the top of your deck with plaguespreaders effect

Last Turn got gutted by rulings long ago and could come back no problem. The main reason it could be used to cheese wins was because back then you could activate cards regardless of board state. You would just resolve the effect as much as possible (wich meant you could use something like ROTA without warriors on the deck just to have an easily activatable spell if you needed to, mainly in Magical Explosion FTK) Right now, you wouldn't even be able to legally activate the card if a summon floodgate is active on the field. Additionally, the main way to drop yourself below 1000 LP, Inspection, was clarified by rulings to be a hard once per turn, even if the text of the card was never updated. And even assuming you managed to jump through the hoops and get out a retardedly massive monster like Gren Maju to safely resolve Last Turn (that for some reason you couldn't just use to beat your opponent on it's own), the card is just too slow to ever be useful anymore.
Self destruct button was a fun card to troll friends back in the day, lol. They would be all like, yay I'm winning. Then activate self-destruct button and watch the glaring commence. My girlfriend at the time was a huge fan of using Final countdown. Which isn't nearly as good anymore given how stupidly crappy the game has become now... But back then, we hated her so much for activating that card every freaking duel! So then it became now I have to speed up and hope you lose before the final turn. Hell I even used it and one of my old decks. Even had pyro clock of destiny to speed up a little. Kind of sad we don't have really any more cards like pyro clock destiny. Oh well 🤷

There were so many better choices to include on that list. The thing about SoJ is that it is as good as the spell book cards that it adds to the hand. The duellogs even had a list about broken cards that will never be used because of their weak archetypes and spellbooks are relatively weak now
@@milto2269inherently it’s concept is busted as fuck but giving a bad archetype a broken card doesn’t make it good. But it is one of the most busted designs in the game because it’s just a free +4-5 if you have the correct setup.
Spellbook with judgment was the only deck that was able to face full force dragon ruler head on. The game just got so much faster since then that you can't really surrender your first turn like that.
@@doctorf1728 Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning is now a better card than Chaos Emperor. It actually has two usable effects along with the same stats and summoning requirement.

I was able to beat Both Spellbooks with Judgment and Full power Element Dragons (with Babies) with my Madolche deck, but no one rly played the Power house that is Madolche.
D-Rulers were good but not Tier 0. Same goes for Spellbooks since they did have a counter. Tier .5 maybe since those counters weren't reliable. Spellbooks got wrecked by EEV and that is why Dark Worlds saw quite a bit of play during that format since they could pull it off consistently.

@@XillyWonka why does everyone forget that victory dragon's match winner effect can be stopped completely if you stop it from attacking with stuff like negate attack scrap iron scarecrow battle fader defense draw sakerestu armor or swift scarecrow or if you cant stop it from attacking use draining sheild or rainbow life to boost your life points so that if your opponet negates every other card i have mentioned you will regain life points equall to victory dragon's attack while giving you a chance to survive and mount a comeback while getting rid of victory dragon sakeratsu armor is a battle trap that activates when your opponet attacks with a monster that monster gets destroyed when it activates there is also hallowed life barrier which is a stronger version of waboku in that it nulls all damage for the turn you use it both battle and effect and just like rainbow life you only have to discard 1 card to use it so there are many ways to stop victory dragon all of the cards i have named will work perfectly in pretty much any deck that you decide to put them into since they either destroy a monster that attacks you straight up ends the battle phase null any and all damage you would take or do this while giving you some sort of advantage finally every single one of these cards i mentioned because they are all very useful counters to victory dragon

@Galaspark compared to like Monster reborn it was. Who wants to summon a 1500 attack monster when you could just normal summon one with 1700 or 1800 attack. Also there was like no way to send a card to the grave short of tributing, and because it's not quickplay you can't activate it on your opponents turn after they've killed your monster. It only became good once cards like synchro's came out where you could send your monster to the grave yourself.

Also, it was better than you sell it, you could bring instant death or banishing (then called removing from play) monsters with that like the DD warriors and the exiled force. It was rather simple to gain an advantage from it, you could also summon one of the searcher monsters.
Ofc pot of greed is here. Especially from its hidden effect called Heart of the Cards wherein it will automatically be at the top of your deck when you are in a tight spot.
14:40 I once got a Zero-Turn-Kill with Makyura lmao. I remember playing Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2008 online, where sometimes we could duel with 1 banned card in our deck (if I remember correctly). So I had a Makyura in my Exodia deck. I remember it being possible to get a 0TK with my setup, but never knew if I could achieve it in practice. Lo and behold, this one duel started between me and an online opponent. I had Makyura in my hand and my opponent had the first turn, where they played Card of Destruction LMAO. Needless to say, I wrecked them to oblivion with endless traps allowing me to draw until I got Exodia in my hand haha.

Marcus Holdvessel my favorite game went like this: Opponent has life boost alpha as their skill, starts duel with 5000 LP I go first, destroy yubel in my hand in my hand to summon terror incarnate, pass Opponent draws mahad, special summons it using its effect, proceeds to battle phase and attacks yubel. Since it battles a DARK monster, mahad’s attack doubles to 5000. Yubel reflects the 5000 to my opponent, defeating him instantly. I’m so mad I didn’t remember to save this as a duel replay. Did send my opponent a “nice!” After I finished laughing my ass off, though
Even if it wasn't good from even a slightly competitive standpoint, I loved to use Painful choice in my magnet warrior deck back in school, along with cards like Dark Factory of Mass Production, or backup soldier. Sure it wasn't the best deck, but most people my age ran bricky decks with too many monsters they couldn't actually summon.
I notice a lot of these cards were made very early in the game and were never intended to be used in such op ways. It’s just as time went on, they could be combo’ed to be so op

Pot of greed has no cost and just gives you a free card for playing it, only limitation of the card is that you can't run another card over it, however, that doesn't matter when you can dig for combo pieces more effectively to just win the game immediately with it.
@@dark_rit That's partially why I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh! in decades. Because Konami banned a lot of my favorite cards, and a lot of the new cards just aren't as appealing as the earlier ones. Hense why I started looking at replacement cards for my deck, such as the Magician Girl archetype.
@@dark_rit Drawing 2 cards is not really the broken part about the card (a lot of archetype cards can do that too, sometimes even better), the broken part is that every single deck will just auto include this card as it is neither situational nor has any downsides, it's never wrong to play this card. If they would keep printing those kind of staple cards, every deck would be made of the same cards, which reduces deck and meta diversity massively.
@@dg2drunk yeah pot of greed ain't really broken. To me the link decks and the pendulums and the xyz decks are quite broken. Especially xyz decks can end the match I'm the 1st turn with their combos. Quite annoying. Master duel just needs to add pot of greed and more if the og cards.

There are lots of cards that let you draw or mill on your opponents turn. Sixth sense was broken because of the magnitude it milled or drew for the cost of it.
It's wild to think about how scary card draw is to the Yu-Gi-Oh meta when other TCGs are like "please draw your entire deck". And yes, Graceful Charity is stronger than Pot of Greed, even Magic banned their version of Graceful Charity while printing stuff that's basically Pot of Greed into blue all the time.
@@ich3730 ancestral visions can very easily be casted for free off of a plethora of cascade spells that are in of themselves decently stat creatures/spells. And it draws 3 cards.
You gi oh is unique to any other TCG in that there is no cost requirement for the busted stuff, it's easy to have balanced card draw when things cost stuff to play and decks aren't 40 cards, but to me that's what makes yu gi oh so fun, is that there are a million ways that can win and do it consistently because the deck functions like a toolbox more than a deck
Actually, since pot of greed can fit in every deck and I mean every deck. It would make it a more Superior card. Plus some cards don't like to be discarded. So technically pot of greed is still the superior card. Granted now, decks that like to be discarded in the graveyard would benefit greatly from graceful charity more so than simply pot of greed. Nonetheless the facts still remain, pot of greed is still a far more broken card.

The only thing I could think of was that it could be used in the mirror as a Maxx c because that was the ultimate hilarious play in 2013, the fact that d rulers could still absolutely smash that deck with that card as a 3 of shows you how busted that format was
It was a ruling nightmare. If a player wasn’t paying attention and they attack for game and they realized that he was attacking with it, they would surrender. Then there would most likely be a judge call, maybe an argument, then they would go to the next game.

As far as I understand, that's the new Rush Duels game from Sevens (and yes, new GAME, not ruleset, since you have to buy all new cards to play it, you can't use regular OCG or TCG cards).
I remember when card of safe return was semi limited, I used two of them in tandem in my zombie deck so I could just go red eyes zombie beatdown and then keep special summoning from opponent graveyard and also get a hand advantage good times
One more subtle thing about Makurya's nerf is that his effect now activates; previously, it was just kind of there and so your opponent could not stop it. Now it can be countered with Solemn Strike and the like.

I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh! in 16-17 years and know absolutely nothing about the current meta. I find it funny, though, that I am still familiar with about half of the cards on this list. This list resonated with me because my favorite card of all time is Painful Choice. Before it was banned, of course, I used to run it. This seems like a no-brainer to everyone nowadays, but when it came out, at least in my Yu-Gi-Oh! circle, nobody ran it. I was sort of the first (in my group and card shoppe, that is,) to recognize its brokenness. I was so notorious for my Painful Choice plays that on one memorable occasion, my opponent gave up immediately after I went into a 'long think' and then played Painful Choice. He knew that after my various calculations that I would only play it if it meant I would essentially win. I think the art is awesome, too.
Learn Japanese From Some Guy I mean, with an effect that basically screams, "I will choose 5 cards from my deck where all of them are equally really good in the graveyard, then force my opponent to choose which combo piece stays in my hand and the rest is dumped into my 'second' hand", it's no surprise that a card like this has no chance of getting out of the banlist. This is a card that's just utter bonkers in most meta/graveyard decks.
@@juwanbantug5465 Oh yeah, no doubt. It is a ridiculous card. I don't know how long you have been playing, but at the time, though, the graveyard wasn't really seen as a 'second hand.' The meta was so different then that it wasn't strange to think of Painful Choice as a bad card.
@@Learnjapanesefromsomeguy I honestly haven't played YGO ever since the XYZ era. What I am aware of is that even back then, certain decks/archetypes (Ex. Lightsworn, Dark World, most zombie decks, etc.) wanted cards in the graveyard to start/extend their combos. Painful Choice is essentially a combo accelerator (and not just an extender) to these kinds of decks as not only was this card an easy way to fill your graveyard, but you yourself also got the ability to select multiple cards that you wanted to be in the graveyard, rather than wait for a few turns to draw those cards, or find some card/effect that allowed you to send a specific combo piece to the graveyard. It's essentially a Foolish Burial on steroids that could also allow you to send Spell/Trap cards that are better off in the graveyard.

The point I was just trying to make is that when the Magic Ruler set came out (2002), Painful Choice wasn't broken at all. So, running it in your deck was somewhat rare. I was simply stating that I loved this card and despite not being considered broken at the time, I had a lot of success with it much to the surprise of my opponents who considered it a lesser card (which, again, was common at the time).
@@Learnjapanesefromsomeguy I was introduced to YGO during the GX to 5D's era, so the meta I played in may have been different and slightly faster than what it was during the infancy stages of the game. During that time, there was a bigger emphasis on sending things to the graveyard, rather than waiting to draw it out or manually searching it.
Painful Choice is one of my favorite cards ever. It’s effect was too good even in pre synchro formats lmao. Just imagine the havoc it would cause in today’s format.
I mean you could also do like a flint lick kind of combo with butterfly dagger. Where you equip it to gearfried and have it be destroyed continuously while you have morale boost on the field and inflict effect damage with fire princess. But since the card has to be destroyed unlike the flint spell card which stays on the field but is just passed on so you don’t take the effect damage from morale boost. However with the butterfly dagger strategy you would since it has to go to the graveyard. You could easily just combat this with something like rainbow life however. A very overpowered card indeed
@@hitmonchan52 even in master duel alot of the cards are not banned and he says in the video, upstart goblin is limited to 1 while I am running 3 on my Exodia Deck, and alot of other cards he mentioned, U can 1st turn win the duel 90% of the time if you go first with that deck, i think a ban list is underway ig.

FTK good in fact, all thanks to having 4 different generic foolish burial effects, Armageddon Knight, Dark Grepher, Foolish Burial, or simply add it to hand with things like RoTA and dump him off with cards like in the Danger! Archetype. With Danger! monsters you're almost guaranteed to have 15 monsters in the GY, so then use Zaborg to pile their extra deck into their GY and use Makyura's effect to use Exchange of The Spirit and dunk on your opponent's deck turn 1. Job done.
I loved the video, as much as I think the Victory Dragon sucks. A suggestion, how about a video of the best XYZ monsters that need 2 materials to activate their effects
Ah, last will... I remember feeling like a genius for using last will to special summon cyber-stein, and then using its effect to get a blue-eyes ultimate dragon on the field back in the days of the early DS yugioh games. good times.
I'm a Dark World guy and i would love it if Graceful Charity got unbanned. It's not gonna happen because that card is disgusting, but goddamn that would be cool for any discard deck to have that

Uhhh, Okay, I think the only real way to do it is to go ham on the downsides, 1st, make it so that every spell card that is activated after that card resolves that turn (i.e. the cards it counts to determine how plus you get) will be banished face-down after resolution. 2nd, make it a hard once per duel. 3rd....... ohhhh, not so sure what to do for the third, but I feel like a third is necessary.... uhh, you loose a stack of life points for every card added to your hand? 4) Okay, again hard once per turn.... actually, maybe not even a hard once per turn, knowing how Supply Squad is doing. Either way, just limit the per-turn usage and you should be good..... and again, you mention that yourself. In case you couldn't tell, I am writing/typing this is I watch the video, pausing the video so I have time to do this. 3) Not so sure what to do with this one.... kinda to iconic to change. And any restriction I could add would probably be used to make a different card instead, after all, how many different weaker versions of this card are there that still see play, Desires and Extravagance are just the 2 most obvious ones. 2) Ugh, the iconic cards are kicking my rear end on this one. I don't want to skip out on 2 in a row. I guess, maybe, make it so that the cards you discard are random and that they get banished face-down instead? 1) Oooo, should have released this list sooner.... This guy just had an errata announced that should allow him to get of the ban-list. And Yes, they did change this in the same way they did the Temple. If you're complaining about those cards, you haven't packed enough MSTs in your deck, or even Spiritualism, the first "cannot be negated" card in the game.
Remember the days before pendulum summoning when we thought Raigeki was one of these? Now thanks to power creep, not only is the card unbanned, it's apparently not even considered good any more. (I keep getting told it "sucks.") A card that wipes your opponent's board with no cost or downside apparently isn't a good effect. You have to wonder how dumb a game has become when that's true.
Raigeki is still good, it's just that there are better options. If your opponent has set cards or monster effects that negate, then you rather use droplet or dark ruler no more, if your opponent doesn't really summon monsters at all (think paleo, eldlich or mystic mine) then lightning storm is better because you can use it in more situations. Or if they just have a full board in general, evenly matched is better since it banishes instead of destroying. Wiping a board with no cost is not as good because their effects still trigger. And 90% of the time there is one Monster that can really fuck you over if it get's destroyed by card eff. Not even going to mention that almost no raigeki will actually resolve in turn 2 since the turn 1 player should have his omni negates up
Anyone who's told you it sucks is either a meta sheep or doesn't know how to play the game. Granted the only reason why it wouldn't be as good is because there are a lot of monsters who are immune to destruction by card effects and there are some better cards available. Such as lightning storm. That card can destroy all your opponent's monsters or all their traps and spells. Though you can't control any face of cards and also too it still suffers from the same problem that certain Monsters can't be destroyed by card effects. But yeah, whoever told the card sucks is an idiot. I do see it from time to time on Master Duels. But folks usually run lightning storm in its place since you can destroy back row as well if you want to.

But lightning storm definitely gets more FaceTime from my personal experience. The fact that you can get rid of monsters or back row is pretty good. Especially if you just started and you're on turn two with your opponent not expecting it. That can seal the deal in a lot of Duels.
@@spades77 I mean, raigeki can still clear whole boards. Full power adamancipator boards usually don't even have a single backrow. You just droplet+raigeki and they're done. It's really just the fact that raigeki alone is usually not good anymore. You need their negates out for raigeki to actually do something. Though you can also use raigeki to bait negates.
A lot of these cards are from the early days of the game. For fun and nostalgia, I like to play YuGiOh Eternal Duelist Soul from the Gameboy system, and a lot of these banned cards show up in the game. I actually don't use most of them, because at the time, most of them were nothing super special. It's only now that time had gone on and the game had changed so much that these cards are op
I feel like change of heart should've been an honorable mention. Also I know monster reborn was unbanned a while ago and became limited I think, but I think that also deserved an honorable mention due to how silly that card was.
Victory Dragon is banned because it does promote unsportsmanlike behavior. You can just scoop at any time. Effect is fine. Too many resources and too many conditions are required for the effect to go through. Nothing broken about it.
Except it affects things outside the game. You essentially don’t get to use 15 cards in your side deck, and if you bricked, you lost your game. It was a stupidly broken effect, even more so than instant wins.
That’s not unsportsmanlike conduct. You could’ve passed first turn, not played a card and tactically surrender to not give away what deck you’re playing.
There is no way they are banning preerrata Makyura before the errata becomes a thing in the TCG now, so the meme of "Makyura is not a banned card" will be eternal.
Victory Dragon is still pretty nasty as it make the card an auto-scoop card for your opponent. Don't wanna risk losing the whole match when that thing comes out so its better to just give up and try again

I love how in the early days of Yu Gi Oh, so many of the spell cards were completely broken (even by today's standards), but most of the monster cards were (at least by today's standards) pretty much unplayable.

I think these cards weren't broken when they came out precisely because there weren't any strong monsters that could fully take advantage of their effects. They only became broken when those stronger monsters were released. Back when Konami designed those cards, they thought that paying life points and sending cards to your graveyard were actual downsides.

I decided to peer into the set list for Alpha; besides not actually having a lot of creatures, there's a nice handful that are still recognizable today as they're playable still. I think that was sort of the point. You (the player, duelest, whatever) were casting spells to support the monsters that you were summoning. I think it was an RP kind of thing. Most monsters were normal monsters that had to beat over other things to get you a victory, so spell cards had to be good.

@@zisischartampilas6601 it really wasn't difficult back when it first came out. I played since the game was released. There were so many ways to swarm the field with what was needed. I just got back into the game again after 7 years. Nice to see they finally added more stuff for certain meta decks.
Still waiting too see if they upgrade X-Sabers, since that was my go to deck. Was super fast, and super strong back then. But now, it needs support from other arch types.
But anyways, V-Dragon was really easy to get out and win, along with other Monsters that needed 3 monsters for tribute. In fact, from what I've seen, it's really super easy now to bring out any monster that needs 3 tributes

What you have to understand is the fact that Yu-Gi-Oh card game has been there for like 20 years. Everytime they release new cards, they have to make them stronger than the last cards that they released, otherwise there would be no point in buying new cards, meaning Konami would not make money.
So when you have game that has been out for like 20 years, you will have to start releasing "broken" cards and with time (20 years worth of time) it will come to the point where the game mechanics that were thought of at the beginning (trap cards) might become "slow" compared to what the meta game is.
I would say they overmade search and speacial summon effects. If solatire decks would not exist trap card would be usable.

There was an autistic kid at the shop I used to play at that would play VD. The one time he managed to get it out on me we ended up in time cause he couldnt get through my Spirit Reaper. I ended up winning cause he had no removal for it. And this is also back in 2009ish for clarity.

But soon the effects that can recycle cards from the graveyard became so commonplace, they came up with the concept of "removing cards from play", which later became known as "banishment". Now, however, we have cards that can reliably recycle banished cards as well, so I wonder what'll be next. A new term like "utterly eradicating" cards, maybe? :P
Now, "face-down" banished cards are nearly really "removed from play" (nearly, not identical, because there are still cards that can recycle those)

Nah, cards like that take too long to resolve cuz the player spends 10 minutes choosing his 5 cards, then you have to spend another 10 minutes selecting the card they keep.
I think Temple of the Kings is a pretty underrated card. It's an unlimited continuous spell card that has a similar effect to Makyura the Destroyer, in which trap cards can be activated the turn they are set. It also allows you to summon The Mystical Beast of Serket, and can be sent to the graveyard along with Serket to summon any monster from your deck or any fusion monster from your extra deck. I use it in my sphinx deck.

Honorable mentions: Last Turn (easy way to gimmick out wins/draws), Self-Destruct Button (ultimate troll)
Last Turn got gutted by rulings long ago and could come back no problem.
The main reason it could be used to cheese wins was because back then you could activate cards regardless of board state. You would just resolve the effect as much as possible (wich meant you could use something like ROTA without warriors on the deck just to have an easily activatable spell if you needed to, mainly in Magical Explosion FTK)
Right now, you wouldn't even be able to legally activate the card if a summon floodgate is active on the field.
Additionally, the main way to drop yourself below 1000 LP, Inspection, was clarified by rulings to be a hard once per turn, even if the text of the card was never updated.
And even assuming you managed to jump through the hoops and get out a retardedly massive monster like Gren Maju to safely resolve Last Turn (that for some reason you couldn't just use to beat your opponent on it's own), the card is just too slow to ever be useful anymore.
Self destruct button was a fun card to troll friends back in the day, lol. They would be all like, yay I'm winning. Then activate self-destruct button and watch the glaring commence. My girlfriend at the time was a huge fan of using Final countdown. Which isn't nearly as good anymore given how stupidly crappy the game has become now...
But back then, we hated her so much for activating that card every freaking duel! So then it became now I have to speed up and hope you lose before the final turn. Hell I even used it and one of my old decks. Even had pyro clock of destiny to speed up a little.
Kind of sad we don't have really any more cards like pyro clock destiny. Oh well 🤷

There were so many better choices to include on that list. The thing about SoJ is that it is as good as the spell book cards that it adds to the hand. The duellogs even had a list about broken cards that will never be used because of their weak archetypes and spellbooks are relatively weak now

I was able to beat Both Spellbooks with Judgment and Full power Element Dragons (with Babies) with my Madolche deck, but no one rly played the Power house that is Madolche.
D-Rulers were good but not Tier 0. Same goes for Spellbooks since they did have a counter. Tier .5 maybe since those counters weren't reliable. Spellbooks got wrecked by EEV and that is why Dark Worlds saw quite a bit of play during that format since they could pull it off consistently.

@@XillyWonka why does everyone forget that victory dragon's match winner effect can be stopped completely if you stop it from attacking with stuff like negate attack scrap iron scarecrow battle fader defense draw sakerestu armor or swift scarecrow or if you cant stop it from attacking use draining sheild or rainbow life to boost your life points so that if your opponet negates every other card i have mentioned you will regain life points equall to victory dragon's attack while giving you a chance to survive and mount a comeback while getting rid of victory dragon sakeratsu armor is a battle trap that activates when your opponet attacks with a monster that monster gets destroyed when it activates there is also hallowed life barrier which is a stronger version of waboku in that it nulls all damage for the turn you use it both battle and effect and just like rainbow life you only have to discard 1 card to use it so there are many ways to stop victory dragon all of the cards i have named will work perfectly in pretty much any deck that you decide to put them into since they either destroy a monster that attacks you straight up ends the battle phase null any and all damage you would take or do this while giving you some sort of advantage finally every single one of these cards i mentioned because they are all very useful counters to victory dragon

@Galaspark compared to like Monster reborn it was. Who wants to summon a 1500 attack monster when you could just normal summon one with 1700 or 1800 attack. Also there was like no way to send a card to the grave short of tributing, and because it's not quickplay you can't activate it on your opponents turn after they've killed your monster. It only became good once cards like synchro's came out where you could send your monster to the grave yourself.

Also, it was better than you sell it, you could bring instant death or banishing (then called removing from play) monsters with that like the DD warriors and the exiled force. It was rather simple to gain an advantage from it, you could also summon one of the searcher monsters.
Ofc pot of greed is here. Especially from its hidden effect called Heart of the Cards wherein it will automatically be at the top of your deck when you are in a tight spot.
14:40 I once got a Zero-Turn-Kill with Makyura lmao. I remember playing Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2008 online, where sometimes we could duel with 1 banned card in our deck (if I remember correctly). So I had a Makyura in my Exodia deck. I remember it being possible to get a 0TK with my setup, but never knew if I could achieve it in practice.
Lo and behold, this one duel started between me and an online opponent. I had Makyura in my hand and my opponent had the first turn, where they played Card of Destruction LMAO. Needless to say, I wrecked them to oblivion with endless traps allowing me to draw until I got Exodia in my hand haha.
Makyura will never be unbanned, right?

I go first, destroy yubel in my hand in my hand to summon terror incarnate, pass
Opponent draws mahad, special summons it using its effect, proceeds to battle phase and attacks yubel. Since it battles a DARK monster, mahad’s attack doubles to 5000. Yubel reflects the 5000 to my opponent, defeating him instantly.
I’m so mad I didn’t remember to save this as a duel replay. Did send my opponent a “nice!” After I finished laughing my ass off, though
Even if it wasn't good from even a slightly competitive standpoint, I loved to use Painful choice in my magnet warrior deck back in school, along with cards like Dark Factory of Mass Production, or backup soldier. Sure it wasn't the best deck, but most people my age ran bricky decks with too many monsters they couldn't actually summon.
I notice a lot of these cards were made very early in the game and were never intended to be used in such op ways. It’s just as time went on, they could be combo’ed to be so op

Pot of greed has no cost and just gives you a free card for playing it, only limitation of the card is that you can't run another card over it, however, that doesn't matter when you can dig for combo pieces more effectively to just win the game immediately with it.
@@dark_rit That's partially why I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh! in decades. Because Konami banned a lot of my favorite cards, and a lot of the new cards just aren't as appealing as the earlier ones. Hense why I started looking at replacement cards for my deck, such as the Magician Girl archetype.
@@dark_rit Drawing 2 cards is not really the broken part about the card (a lot of archetype cards can do that too, sometimes even better), the broken part is that every single deck will just auto include this card as it is neither situational nor has any downsides, it's never wrong to play this card. If they would keep printing those kind of staple cards, every deck would be made of the same cards, which reduces deck and meta diversity massively.

It's wild to think about how scary card draw is to the Yu-Gi-Oh meta when other TCGs are like "please draw your entire deck". And yes, Graceful Charity is stronger than Pot of Greed, even Magic banned their version of Graceful Charity while printing stuff that's basically Pot of Greed into blue all the time.

@@ich3730 ancestral visions can very easily be casted for free off of a plethora of cascade spells that are in of themselves decently stat creatures/spells. And it draws 3 cards.
You gi oh is unique to any other TCG in that there is no cost requirement for the busted stuff, it's easy to have balanced card draw when things cost stuff to play and decks aren't 40 cards, but to me that's what makes yu gi oh so fun, is that there are a million ways that can win and do it consistently because the deck functions like a toolbox more than a deck
Actually, since pot of greed can fit in every deck and I mean every deck. It would make it a more Superior card. Plus some cards don't like to be discarded. So technically pot of greed is still the superior card. Granted now, decks that like to be discarded in the graveyard would benefit greatly from graceful charity more so than simply pot of greed. Nonetheless the facts still remain, pot of greed is still a far more broken card.

It was a ruling nightmare. If a player wasn’t paying attention and they attack for game and they realized that he was attacking with it, they would surrender. Then there would most likely be a judge call, maybe an argument, then they would go to the next game.

One more subtle thing about Makurya's nerf is that his effect now activates; previously, it was just kind of there and so your opponent could not stop it. Now it can be countered with Solemn Strike and the like.

Seeing Spellbook of Judgement on this list is crazy given what we know now
I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh! in 16-17 years and know absolutely nothing about the current meta. I find it funny, though, that I am still familiar with about half of the cards on this list.
This list resonated with me because my favorite card of all time is Painful Choice. Before it was banned, of course, I used to run it. This seems like a no-brainer to everyone nowadays, but when it came out, at least in my Yu-Gi-Oh! circle, nobody ran it. I was sort of the first (in my group and card shoppe, that is,) to recognize its brokenness.
I was so notorious for my Painful Choice plays that on one memorable occasion, my opponent gave up immediately after I went into a 'long think' and then played Painful Choice. He knew that after my various calculations that I would only play it if it meant I would essentially win.
I think the art is awesome, too.
Learn Japanese From Some Guy I mean, with an effect that basically screams, "I will choose 5 cards from my deck where all of them are equally really good in the graveyard, then force my opponent to choose which combo piece stays in my hand and the rest is dumped into my 'second' hand", it's no surprise that a card like this has no chance of getting out of the banlist.
This is a card that's just utter bonkers in most meta/graveyard decks.
@@juwanbantug5465 Oh yeah, no doubt. It is a ridiculous card. I don't know how long you have been playing, but at the time, though, the graveyard wasn't really seen as a 'second hand.' The meta was so different then that it wasn't strange to think of Painful Choice as a bad card.
@@Learnjapanesefromsomeguy I honestly haven't played YGO ever since the XYZ era. What I am aware of is that even back then, certain decks/archetypes (Ex. Lightsworn, Dark World, most zombie decks, etc.) wanted cards in the graveyard to start/extend their combos.
Painful Choice is essentially a combo accelerator (and not just an extender) to these kinds of decks as not only was this card an easy way to fill your graveyard, but you yourself also got the ability to select multiple cards that you wanted to be in the graveyard, rather than wait for a few turns to draw those cards, or find some card/effect that allowed you to send a specific combo piece to the graveyard. It's essentially a Foolish Burial on steroids that could also allow you to send Spell/Trap cards that are better off in the graveyard.
@@juwanbantug5465 Yeah, for sure. I understand how the card works and why it is good. I am not sure you and I are talking about the same thing, though. The point I was just trying to make is that when the Magic Ruler set came out (2002), Painful Choice wasn't broken at all. So, running it in your deck was somewhat rare. I was simply stating that I loved this card and despite not being considered broken at the time, I had a lot of success with it much to the surprise of my opponents who considered it a lesser card (which, again, was common at the time).

During that time, there was a bigger emphasis on sending things to the graveyard, rather than waiting to draw it out or manually searching it.
Painful Choice is one of my favorite cards ever. It’s effect was too good even in pre synchro formats lmao. Just imagine the havoc it would cause in today’s format.

I mean you could also do like a flint lick kind of combo with butterfly dagger. Where you equip it to gearfried and have it be destroyed continuously while you have morale boost on the field and inflict effect damage with fire princess. But since the card has to be destroyed unlike the flint spell card which stays on the field but is just passed on so you don’t take the effect damage from morale boost. However with the butterfly dagger strategy you would since it has to go to the graveyard. You could easily just combat this with something like rainbow life however. A very overpowered card indeed

FTK good in fact, all thanks to having 4 different generic foolish burial effects, Armageddon Knight, Dark Grepher, Foolish Burial, or simply add it to hand with things like RoTA and dump him off with cards like in the Danger! Archetype. With Danger! monsters you're almost guaranteed to have 15 monsters in the GY, so then use Zaborg to pile their extra deck into their GY and use Makyura's effect to use Exchange of The Spirit and dunk on your opponent's deck turn 1. Job done.

I'm a Dark World guy and i would love it if Graceful Charity got unbanned. It's not gonna happen because that card is disgusting, but goddamn that would be cool for any discard deck to have that
I remember the turbo dark world stories on the forums of all the busted cards being in the deck at one or so, the deck had like 9 win con spell cards plus the dark world engine
Okay, giving myself a challenge, how would I errata these cards to make them worthy of removal from the forbidden list:

9) Like you said. Make it a hard once per turn.... that can/should also probably be applied to the other cards where possible.
8) Uhhh, include restrictions that keep you from playing it turn 1, like your opponent has to control a monster or 2?

6) Hmm, well the problem here is the amount of GY set-up it causes, so maybe if it just Banished the cards (face-down) instead of sending them to the GY, that would be enough?.... Oh, you suggested that yourself, Okay.
5) Oh, boy...... this one is tough. Uhhh, Okay, I think the only real way to do it is to go ham on the downsides, 1st, make it so that every spell card that is activated after that card resolves that turn (i.e. the cards it counts to determine how plus you get) will be banished face-down after resolution. 2nd, make it a hard once per duel. 3rd....... ohhhh, not so sure what to do for the third, but I feel like a third is necessary.... uhh, you loose a stack of life points for every card added to your hand?
4) Okay, again hard once per turn.... actually, maybe not even a hard once per turn, knowing how Supply Squad is doing. Either way, just limit the per-turn usage and you should be good..... and again, you mention that yourself. In case you couldn't tell, I am writing/typing this is I watch the video, pausing the video so I have time to do this.
3) Not so sure what to do with this one.... kinda to iconic to change. And any restriction I could add would probably be used to make a different card instead, after all, how many different weaker versions of this card are there that still see play, Desires and Extravagance are just the 2 most obvious ones.

Nasturtium macro cosmos doesn’t change how the game is played though. It’s a floodgate that banished cards, lots of other cards do that
Remember the days before pendulum summoning when we thought Raigeki was one of these? Now thanks to power creep, not only is the card unbanned, it's apparently not even considered good any more. (I keep getting told it "sucks.") A card that wipes your opponent's board with no cost or downside apparently isn't a good effect. You have to wonder how dumb a game has become when that's true.
Raigeki can still fuk someone up in a duel though, they wont expect it since hardly anyone runs it now lol
Raigeki is still good, it's just that there are better options. If your opponent has set cards or monster effects that negate, then you rather use droplet or dark ruler no more, if your opponent doesn't really summon monsters at all (think paleo, eldlich or mystic mine) then lightning storm is better because you can use it in more situations. Or if they just have a full board in general, evenly matched is better since it banishes instead of destroying.
Wiping a board with no cost is not as good because their effects still trigger. And 90% of the time there is one Monster that can really fuck you over if it get's destroyed by card eff. Not even going to mention that almost no raigeki will actually resolve in turn 2 since the turn 1 player should have his omni negates up
Anyone who's told you it sucks is either a meta sheep or doesn't know how to play the game. Granted the only reason why it wouldn't be as good is because there are a lot of monsters who are immune to destruction by card effects and there are some better cards available. Such as lightning storm. That card can destroy all your opponent's monsters or all their traps and spells. Though you can't control any face of cards and also too it still suffers from the same problem that certain Monsters can't be destroyed by card effects.
But yeah, whoever told the card sucks is an idiot. I do see it from time to time on Master Duels. But folks usually run lightning storm in its place since you can destroy back row as well if you want to.

But lightning storm definitely gets more FaceTime from my personal experience. The fact that you can get rid of monsters or back row is pretty good. Especially if you just started and you're on turn two with your opponent not expecting it. That can seal the deal in a lot of Duels.

It's really just the fact that raigeki alone is usually not good anymore. You need their negates out for raigeki to actually do something. Though you can also use raigeki to bait negates.
A lot of these cards are from the early days of the game. For fun and nostalgia, I like to play YuGiOh Eternal Duelist Soul from the Gameboy system, and a lot of these banned cards show up in the game. I actually don't use most of them, because at the time, most of them were nothing super special. It's only now that time had gone on and the game had changed so much that these cards are op

Effect is fine. Too many resources and too many conditions are required for the effect to go through. Nothing broken about it.
Except it affects things outside the game. You essentially don’t get to use 15 cards in your side deck, and if you bricked, you lost your game. It was a stupidly broken effect, even more so than instant wins.
And the effect itself is useless, but it annoys people because scooping
That’s not unsportsmanlike conduct. You could’ve passed first turn, not played a card and tactically surrender to not give away what deck you’re playing.

Victory Dragon is still pretty nasty as it make the card an auto-scoop card for your opponent. Don't wanna risk losing the whole match when that thing comes out so its better to just give up and try again
Uh you dont scoop on the summon you scoop on the initiation of the attack that would kill you anyway
in the OCG, a player cannot forfeit until the 10th turn or after, and if attempting to do so during your opponent's turn, they have to agree to it.
