    I don't think I ever watched this review before. Excellent review as always guys and your description sounds just how I would expect it to taste. I love Mike's description of 'old bookstore' because I work in the second hand book trade. 93 points sounds about right in my minds eye. Hope you are both well. All the best. WT

      Hey Welsh. Hope all is well. This particular bottling is very good. Unfortunately the more recent ones are not as good, not as rich. Very similar to whats happening with the 18s.

    It's an amazing dram. It's so hard to buy a bottle since you can buy 5 bottles of the venerable Macallan 18 for the same price. Glengoyne 25 is almost as amazing.

    I was gifted a bottle of this last year. Absolutely delicious. Even better than the Macallan M. I initially had a glass of 25 year at a restaurant in NYC and I think the cost was $400 and I had a glass of the Macallan M (crystal decanter bottle) for $1000. The 25 year was surprisingly better in my opinion.

    Just got my Mac 25 in the mail yesterday. Was so excited. I don't have the nose or the palette yet to fully appreciate it. But Macallan just has such an outstanding reputation, I know it's expensive compare to most, but just had to have a piece of history. I may never drink it, bought it for two reasons, either as a collectors item/investment or possibly to drink when and if the time is right.Was a great moment waiting for that UPS truck to drop by with my collection piece. Your Highland Park 29 special cask.Had to get this one as it is becoming more and more rare and they aren't making them anymore. From what I am seeing the non age statement expressions they are going to now, just don't measure up to these age statement versions. So would hate it if I didn't order one and they disappeared or shot up in price. I never bought the Louis XIII back when it was $1200 and obviously deeply regret that. Not gonna make the same mistake again.Being a Collector has always been in my blood and researching good single malts has been a very enjoyable experience and so glad to have started my collection.Question, I think I do enjoy the more smoky peat versions of Scotch. The 6 I have now are all more Sherry Monsters. What do you recommend for something with a more smoky flavor? I have some Lagavulin 16 on the way but open to any suggestions you may have.Keep up the great work guys. We really appreciate it.

    • @maltreviews
      @maltreviews  8 років тому

      That is awesome, Im glad you picked up those 2. Maybe keep the Mac 25 and open the HP29 as that Hp will surprise you by its quality. Nice buy. The nice part about liking heavily peated whiskies is that you can get good value with the younger stuff. Talisker 10, 18 and 30 are all amazing. The 30 is obviously an epic whisky but it will cost you $600-700. Also Ardbeg Ugi is a must, that is the best bang for the buck whisky out there.

    The one you’re reviewing is legendary but hard to find and really expensive, just tried the 2019 release and it’s not even as good and dark as some older Mac 18 like 1995 vintage and cost over 2000$. At this point I believe old bottles of Glengoyne 25 are way better and more affordable malt.

    One more question. Have you guys seen anything on the new Norlan Glasses? Totally new design for whisky glasses. Looking to rival the Glencairn glasses for the ultimate whisky experience. Interesting marriage of technology, fluid dynamics along with the art of nosing and tasting whisky. Will start shipping this summer, just got a pre-order in but won't ship until August for my batch. Might be just a gimmick but looks interesting.

    This whisky is obviously very good, but I was done with it after $750, it’s definitely not worth the $1,699 for the same whisky that was just $750 a few years ago, this whisky is now for hipster status symbol posers, Dalmore 25 is also now in that same category at $1,399, if you want something amazing, get yourself a Glengoyne 25, even the 21 and 18 are awesome. You’ll actually day dream about Glengoyne throughout your day. Don’t let the hipsters know about it tho.

      Yes there is. The current release is not the best Mac 25 to be honest. The one we are drinking here is in the wood box but an earlier release with better quality whisky in it. The red box is before this one and very good juice as well. Both are the sherry Mac 25

    I have two bottles of these, however, how can I tell what year is my Macallan 25? On the surface is looks exactly like yours. With the red ribbon. But I'm having a hard time finding the vintage year, not even on Whiskybase.. I was able to find the bar code and it reads 0-87236-10400-9 I happened to find another set of digits (looks laser etched into the lower back of the bottle) and it reads 10087222. Can this be a hint? I have also asked other MaCallan enthusiasts and some have mentioned that they print a code behind the front label, and you'll require a flash light to see it. I tried, but the juice is just too dark and the label in the back blocks my view on the back of the front label...So I'm a bit stuck...Any help is appreciated!

    You mentioned that you are compering this to other great scotches and gave it a hard 93. Regardless of price, what other scotches would you rate higher than The Macallan 25?
    Thank you again for a great review.

    • @maltreviews
      @maltreviews  9 років тому

      VaryingViewpoint We probably miss worded it by saying a harsh 93. 93 is an amazing score and we would never score something that high unless it was an incredible whisky. To get a higher score it would have to even more complex, bigger, and offer something hardly any other whisky can. So far in our reviews we have done a few whiskies that we gave higher than a 93 to. We have more to come but I rather not say and keep each a review a surprise. To compare the Mac 25 directly to some other whiskies that cost a little less but have same or better quality, Longmorn and Glen Grant bottled by Gordon & Macphail have some amazing aged whiskies that cost a little less and offer amazing quality for a heavily sherried whisky. We will def do some reviews of those in the near future.

    • @VaryingViewpoint
      @VaryingViewpoint 9 років тому

      Malt Reviews That sounds great!
      I miss worded by saying "hard". I knew what you meant in relation the your other reviews. It might have rated a 94 if you didn't have such great whiskies to experience.
      I've watched most of your reviews over the last 24 hours and found your higher rated whiskies. You reviews are top-notch!!!
      What about the Gordon & Macphail bottlings of Macallen? Specifically Macallan - Speymalt - 1970 43 year old bottled in 2013 at 43abv? I found 4 available for $900cnd ($700US). It is 1st fill Sherry Casks. Are you familiar with this one or any others that are 40yo or older from this bottler?
      Thanks again.

    • @maltreviews
      @maltreviews  9 років тому

      VaryingViewpoint we have not tried that particular one. But we have tried the 1970 bottled in 2011, 41 year old. It was very good. 93-94 point range. Do remember that when its first fill and aged for that long the wood influence is really high. So the whisky becomes more drying and you can taste that wood influence. We think at times this can be over powering and at times it adds to the experience. Overall our experience with GM bottles has been excellent.

    is there a whiskey that has scored 100 by you two? from what I've viewed thus far by you and ralfy, 87 to 91 is a range of very good scotch single malts. 94 is the highest I've heard of. I do realize that all this tasting is subjective :)

      +Sid King Never scored 100, that would mean pure perfection and way better than anything else we have tried. We have scored 96 to Dalmore 50 and Macallan fine and rare, both which we have reviews for on here. Every point above 90 is very hard to earn so it means a lot if we score above 90. You are correct 87 is very good whisky.

    • @maltreviews
      @maltreviews  7 років тому +4

      Good question. Not sure about you but I personally like smelling fresh/real leather. Has a distinct smell that makes me want to go back for another smell. Old books stores have this weird smell that just says this book is old. Its not good or bad but it just smells old and antique in a way. With whisky when you add this leather smell along with the old books (old casks) combined with the sweet sherry fruits, it makes such a beautiful experience. Hard to explain but I assure you its all in a good way. Great question though.

    • @welshtoro3256
      @welshtoro3256 6 років тому +1

      It is a good question. This part of our senses is highly evocative. The sense of smell is utterly underrated but smells remain locked in our memory for the slightest trigger to reactivate them. I enjoy top end cider too and the best stuff has a farmyard/manure note. It doesn't sound like something you want to smell or drink but it's a superb note compared to the mediocrity of cheaper industrial cider.
