  • Get ready as we explore M*A*S*H 🎖️ THEN AND NOW 2020 MASH ran for a whopping 11 seasons. It quickly became the gold standard for television programming back in the 70s and into the 80s., and spurred on 3 Spin-Off Shows: Trapper MD, After MASH, and Walter. Much of the credit goes to the incredible cast of actors, who led by Alan Alda, grabbed a nation’s attention for over a decade. And when the journey finally ended, we all watched. So Let’s revisit those very actors, and see what led them to MASH, and what some of them did after hanging up their dog tags for good.
    Here's what the cast is upto in 2023: doyouremember.com/132642/mash...
    Chapters:

    My two favorites were Klinger and Radar. My daughter served in the Army and was then hired by KBR and was stationed at the Bagram airbase in Afghanistan. Her job was in logistics and sent out anything our troops called in for. If she didn't have it she knew who did and bypassed the chain of command and went directly who had it and got it sent out ASAP. I had a soldier call me from Afghanistan and thanked me for raising a good daughter. I said "You mean Amber?" He said "Yes, but we call her Radar!" If we needed anything, she got it sent out really fast.

    Its hard to pick just one coz they all brought so much to the show. I was 10 years old when Mash started. Over the years I started watching coz of Radar. He was so cute. He was also my first actor crush lol. All in all, I grew up watching every episode and to this day, I still watch it. It's a timeless show. It had its moments that made you realize just how lucky you were to be somewhere safe and warm. If they ever tried to do a remake of Mash, I personally don't think it will have the same essence that the original has. Thank you for sharing this. Agree with ToddF: Leaving out Wayne Rogers was a big omission. His interaction with Alan Alda was, I think, a big part of the show's early success. Also, Several of the recurring guest characters, could have or should have been mentioned: Alan Arbus who played Sidney, the army psychiatrist; Loudon Wainwright III, Alan Alda's father Robert, as well as the Asian actors who played Koreans such as Pat Morita & Soon-Tek O. Actually, enough of these guest stars played on MASH for there to be a whole separate video about them.

    Nurse Kellye, Major Winchester the III, and Colonel Potter are my favorites; Nurse Kellye was such a positive and strong female role. The episode where she gives Hawkeye an education on his behavior is stellar. The episodes where Major Winchester receives the fall leaf from the school child and the one where he works with the patient who had to reclaim his ability to play the piano bring on the good crying every time. And Colonel Potter getting choked up over those in his command is a genuine show of care and concern. M*A*S*H makes me laugh a lot, but the human connection so aptly portrayed by the actors is what has me watching the show over and over. I own every single episode.

    *MASH* was undoubtedly the best TV show ever! My favorite character has to be Hawkeye Pierce. I actually met Gary Burghoff & his mother in a MacDonalds way back in 1981. He was very down to earth & one of the nicest people that I have ever met. Like millions of others, I hated to see that show end. Maybe it's because I served in the military but after the show ended, I found that I couldn't watch re-runs because it's just too nostalgic. I totally loved M.A.S.H. when it was on, and still love it if I happen to be visiting someone with TV (I don't have it). All the characters and actors were my favorites except for two who were my un-favorites. I wasn't enamored of either McLean Stevenson or Larry Linville, but I never missed an episode.

    Gary Burghoff also was spokesman for BP when they bought Gulf Oil in the 90s. A ham radio friend of mine in Atlanta worked with Gary during that time. Gary would not fly anywhere so BP had to furnish him a motorhome to go places. Radar always used ground transportation in M*A*S*H.

    Yo what a great series n film, I was hooked, loved it, n miss it, there was never a dull moment, boy they don’t make them like they did back then.
    I was watching the reruns in 2019 wow wow wow they helped me through a lot, I was finally looking after Mum after Dad had passed n I laughed n cried, just what the doctor ordered har heaven, I will make a point of watching the reruns again n hoping the cast wouldn’t pass away in real life, because I would miss them, even not knowing who they were out of character. Bless you all. XX 🤠😃😄🤣😆😢✊🙏

    M*A*S*H* was one of the all-time great TV series and in the UK, it was shown on BBC 2 with no commercials or laughter track, perfection.
    I really liked Alan Arbus as Sidney Freeman, he was great in the part.

    While Radar and Mulcahy are my favs, I always connected with Winchester because of traits I had like his pride and passion in the work he did, his singleness, being that guy that never really buddy buddies with anyone but eventually comes to be friends with a few people. And finally, his love of music. The final episode where he smashes his record of Mozart after the band he tried to teach was killed makes me sob like a child every time I see it.

    My favorite character would have to be Col. Potter. His dry situational wit (To Hot Lips: "Major, you have to stop getting drunk and beating up the troops!"), his calm demeanor, his respect and affection for the men and women under his command, and his terrific leadership style. Whoever wrote the character really understood Adm. Grace Hopper's advice, "You lead people; you manage resources."

    Its a toss up.... I was called 'Radar' from the 7th grade until well into adulthood, first because my ears were big... and after that it was because I had an uncanny feeling about where the cops would be and saved us pot smokers many times... but... I always liked Alan Alda... loved him in the movie about Caryl Chessman... and his portrayal of Hawkeye was always stellar..

    6:35 Bartford Hamilton Steele was a Major General. "Not now, Marjorie, I'm inspecting the troops" and "But first, a number!"
    As others have mentioned: where are McLean Stevenson and Wayne Rogers? valé to both those gentlemen.
    Another video could feature recurring characters that appeared in multiple episodes but weren't part of the regular cast. Many of them are no longer with us:
    * Marcia Strassman, who was Nurse Margie Cutler and also Julie Kotter in 'Welcome Back, Kotter'.
    * G W Bailey, who played Rizzo.
    * Edward Winter as Colonel Flagg.
    * The character of "Spearchucker" Jones, who was apparently written out of the series when the writers found out that there were no black surgeons serving in the US Army during the Korean conflict.
    * Sidney Freedman, the Army psychologist.
    * Brigadier Clayton.
    * Brigadier Hammond- played by the same actor in both the movie and the TV series.

Richard Hooker who wrote the book MASH, was based on his experience as a surgeon in a MASH unit 8055 during the Korean conflict.
