My grandfather showed me mash when i was 7, and i instantly fell in love with the show, at first i loved it bc of the pranks and jokes, but as i got older and more mature, i came to appreciate how hawkeye and the crew had their more rouching moments, my favorite one was how charles defended private palmer, the kid who had a studdering problem and was called a dumby for it, and gave him his copy of moby dick, and then you realized it was personal for charles because when he listens to his sisters recorded message to him, she had a studder as well, it was one of my personal mash moments that were serious

I like the inference that Hawkeye was a grunt in WW2 (the timeline *just* about lines up and it's much more a nickname for a DM than a surgeon) and that's the reason for his aversion to war and his contempt for brass.
My dad, a korea and vietnam vet, for all of hawkeyes flippant, hilarious humor, my dad absolutely admired pierce for his dedication to his craft. My dad spoke nothing but praise for Mash units. This show helped us bond.
Imagine this....the final episode of MASH....Hawkeye hugs BJ...gets on the chopper....we see the big "GOODBYE" BJ made out of the rocks.....the chopper lifts off....Hawkeye leans back in relief that the war is over and he can finally go home....then....words come across the screen seconds later saying "Hawkeye was killed when his chopper crashed 15 minutes later".....can you imagine the national shock/outrage/sadness that would have resulted to end the show that way?....what would people have done in reaction afterward in that pre social media age???
Hawkeye was definitely my favorite character. I also thought Alan Alda was a very handsome man when he was younger-it's one of the minor reasons I got into this show!!
Little known fact about radar, he has a deformed left hand that he keeps covered up as much as possible, you can sometimes catch a quick glimpse of his very tiny fingers. He’s always holding a clipboard or something. Hand in pocket etc.. I love him so much and he’s one of the best drummers to live!
My beautiful grandmother of 76 passed away while they were watching an episode of MASH at 730 at night, my grandfather asked her if she wanted a cup of tea and she looked up at him with almost a glow to her .was so beautiful (that's what he told me he was thinking) they were watching every night ... while he was out in the kitchen making her a cup of tea (on my moms, their daughters birthday was this same day..., she passed away in 2003 at age 36 from heart attack) and he heard her say his name very gently. , He went around the corner to the living room to see what she wanted and she was already gone just like that. Her Hands still warm as he held them, 58 yr marriage. She also passed away from heart attack.
