  • The '44' Blues was a classic theme of deep south barrelhouse blues. Each pianist had a different take on it. Here's one way I like to play it, which combines original ideas with "44 themes" from Blind Leroy Garnett and Will Ezell.
Filmed at Jackson Pianos in St. Louis, MO.

When I was 12 in 1975 here in London I couldn't find Barrelhouse/stride/stomp/slow Boogie etc etc. One day I found an album titled "Blues for your pocket" Memphis Slim playing various Boogie styles was the first track and the rest is history!

It’s a disgrace this doesn’t have more likes/views. Ethan, you’re doing great work by opening our eyes to the importance of barrelhouse to American musical history.

Thanks Jim. And heck, for such an obscure genre 11k ain't so bad, if you ask me! 🙂

Well, I love the fact you’re doing the Lord’s work by making it less obscure. Coming to Yaqui’s this Tuesday with some pals.

I really like what you're doing here. I still think the best 44s is by Little Brother closely followed Sykes.

Thanks nick. I'm with you, Little Brother's is the masterpiece of the 44s. The version on my album follows his pretty closely. These days i've been adding a bit of Lee Green in there. I really like the way he plays it. Especially on "Train Number 44" , where he and Sykes are chatting!

1:50 was a kick in the head. Now, where was it someone said R&B came from?
