@@EthanLeinwand DAmn! Then how do you "learn" the piece to the point that you feel it's good enough to play in front of others? (Asking as an amateur who enjoys 😘the way you play this piece :) )

    • @EthanLeinwand

Well, a big part of it is improvised. I had the groove down, and some melodic ideas. But from there I just messed around. That's how i approach most these tunes, whether it's an original or if I learned it from an old record.
A piece like this was basically learned in public. It developed over a couple of years, from me just noodling round at bar/restaurant gigs. Getting comfortable improvising in public, and then having low stake gigs where I can try stuff out, was the key for me.
If you want to approach learning a tune like this, I'd recommend starting with a simpler left hand...i sure did! Perhaps looking at the left hand of Yancey Special would be a good place to start. Groove, and then melodies!
(Hard question to answer, tbh. Hope this helps a little). It's all a process...and it definitely includes falling on your face regularly!

@@EthanLeinwand Thanks man! I keep coming back to these two pieces of yours but I have your channel bookmarked to check out your other stuff slowly.
The more I hear you play the more I can see the hard work you put it.
You have a beautiful touch and love your control over pitch!

Ahh, now I see why you asked! No , this is from before the days that I got the "Little Guy", as I call him. Gotten a bunch more since. They're little 64-key melodigrands (like charlie has) and are wonderul pianos.

Understand, please. I only mean positivity. But I'd say that "you didn't write this." This is like surfing a wave. You're an incredible surfer. Funk is there waiting for someone to make it its "bitch". Just like a wave or a horse. And you just jumped on it and did a back flip. @1:13 this reminds me of quincy jones or grover washington jr, or someone I'm too uneducated to name But it's better than harry connick. Like ole blue eyes or Elvis Harry Connick makes it romantic. I prefer structure. I like fast and happy, but I prefer to keep it blues-based. Blues is not just a flavor or genre, it has objective ingredients--a recipe-- and many ears can spot the difference but to be Ethan, you're going to have to have more than the recipe. And I'd argue the difference is your work ethic. You're not just smart. You are like an ant or bee. I'm avoiding more politically incorrect analogies, but you're like militant. And that's why I give you props. The first day I found your channel I wondered why I couldn't find 20 just like it. Lots of teachers on youtube, but few performance artists who really work. Few take the time, and your breed is dying. You are the only fluent performer of these composers I've found. Back to blues, this recipe invariably touches a nerve I think. This is why I like it better than simple classical or I vi IV V or ii V I. All of these styles serve as sufficient platforms. I really like Cole Porter. But the same way I like a certain kind of girl and a certain kind of candy--both choclatly delicious--I like these 1900s composers. As I said before I only knew of Joplin before discovering you. Information was scarce and only for the privileged back in the 80s. I see how music has evolved and I wonder if it will ever evolve again (current music is in a state of devolving). Keep performing but find a girl to sing jazz out front. She'll need your accompan(sp?) and you can make $$. But for all I know you've got 7 projects and teach adjunct at state college. I like the channel.
You've developed tremendously over 8 years. I really like the theme @3:00 too.
I hate that some of my comment may not make sense. It's the cushion of the original gangster I think.

This song is definitely more groove than anything else, so I hear what you're saying. As far as comparing blues progression to other jazz and classical progressions: Often times people who connect to blues are the same folks that prefer modal music , be it Indian Ragas, Klezmer, or one chord-funk etc. etc. .... Some people connect more to chordal and harmonic movement , and for them, the blues is not generally something they get a lot out of . Especially on the performance side.

@@EthanLeinwand I like you a lot. This is the best "groove" I've heard in a long time. Especially by a piano player not named Ray Charles. You have the skill of the best classical pianists with the soul of Aretha Franklin. I limit the word "song" to music with words and lyrics. Your funky, varied improvisationally structured piece is mucho sonically pleasing. (Certainly not ragtime, but certainly jazzy). Im looking up those modal examples (I've never heard of). Thanks for spending time to respond.
