I have a sordid confession to make as a fellow musician...
    In 1984, having received my hand-me-down tabletop Music Centre with turntable & AM radio if I remember correctly, the accompanying 7" single gift was;
Paul McCartney's 'the Frog Chorus' 'BOM- -BOM-BOM, BUY IT NOW' (did like the video though :) )
-and little brother received the 'Postman Pat' theme tune- I still have them both somewhere ;)
The Single I did want that year was 'Hole in my Shoe' from Neil & the Young Ones, - I got a taped copy off the radio ;)
But I do remember listening to the Who's 'I can see for Miles' that year & and probing Mum for an answer on how far away was the horizon?
I think She mainly wanted to finish her dinner though ;)
    All the best Dean! :)

Nice one. It was actually 1984 when I got my first music centre as well. Oh how I loved taping my favorite songs off the radio, but the. recordings always got ruined by the DJ talking over the intros/outros.

This is pretty interesting to see a contemporary editors' list. I recognize many of the songs. I also recognize most of the artists but not all of their songs. The part where you said forty years at the time of the magazine's publication was 1944 really hit me.
MY top ten of 1984 is this (I have eclectic tastes)
    10. Face to Face - Under the Gun
    9. Charlene - Escape
    8. Racer - For You (from the soundtrack to the film 'Lovelines')
    7. Taco - Married
    6. Fire Inc. - Nowhere Fast
    5. Iam SIam - Talk To Me
    4. Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo - Sucker For Mystery
    3. Berlin - No More Words
    2. Kidd Video - Video Romeo
    1. Electric Pandas - Let's Gamble

Shocked that you didn't make up for the magazine's omission of Agadoo by Black Lace by putting it in your top ten!

Cool video, Dean. I was a sophomore in HS in 1984-85, so I have a very strong opinion of my top ten tunes. My father, who graduated in 1962, also liked 80s top 40 and Doctor, Doctor was one of the tunes he would play all the time from his den. Now, my tastes change from day to day, so the ranking might change, but these are my top ten today:
    1) I Can't Hold Back - Survivor (Awesome album)
    2) Hard Habit To Break - Chicago (Awesome album)
    3) Foolish Heart - Steve Perry
    4) That Was Yesterday - Foreigner (actually, the hit came out in 1985, but the album was released in 1984)
    5) No Way Out - Jefferson Starship
    6) Valotte - Julian Lennom
    7) I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen
    8) Boys of Summer (Don Henley)
    9) Against All Odds - Phil Collins
    10) Self Control - Laura Branigan
Great albums that I own, but the hits were not great - Alan Parsons Project - Ammonia Avenue; Dan Fogelberg - Windows and Walls, Dennis DeYoung - Desert Moon

I was 16 and at 6th form in '84. I prefer your top 10 to that of the magazine. I can't think of a full top 10 off the top of my head but I'd definitely have "Jump" by Van Halen, "Wonderland" by Big Country and "Self Control" by Laura Brannigan. It was a great year. Just got to work on my time machine now.

Finally some none Star Wars content! 😂. Solid top ten you put together there with an unexpected number 1, I would have put good money on The Reflex being your favourite of that year. Personally I didn't really have any records back then though I do remember a lot of those songs being on the radio. I'm more of a 90's grunge guy myself. It is strange to think, if I was to play Pearl Jam Ten to my kids it would be like my parents playing music from the 50's to me 😮. Great video mate 👍 👌 😊

Your top 10 choices are more in line with mine, how old were you Dean that year? I turned 12.
Also I dont think Borderline was a hit in the UK in 84, just looked it up and no. 56 was it's highest position. It wasn't until 86 when it reached no. 2.
There were a few "indie" songs in the magazine's top 40 which I have no recollection of hearing at that time.

Being reminded of this amazing era in music shows how most of this music now is rubbish. Some good music now, but think most of it would struggle to fill one week of top of the pops if in direct competition.

The Riddle at 39? Dr Dr at 37? The Reflex at 20? May have missed it. Was that opinion or sales? Thank you for a non toy video. We are similar age. Toys probably only featured in a small part of the 80s. Idea for a video. Clothes trainers football boots kits had, wanted and or couldnt get?

    • @AllThings80s

It was the editor's pick of the top 40. I don't know what they were smoking, but there were some awful picks in there.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this non toy video as I definitely plan on doing more videos on things like the topics you suggested.

I must admit that I don't remember the vast majority of the top 40 songs in the magazine. I don't think I really started listening to music until around 1987, and from then onwards it was mostly Michael Jackson and Madonna, Bananarama and The Bangles. I mainly liked the female artists and groups.
I think I discovered various types of metal in about 1990 and never went back to pop.
    Thanks for the video!

    Hey Dean👋enjoyed this one mate!
The editors choice was crap, let’s be honest😃
You had some really good stuff in your list Dean, but don’t think it’s as good as mine😀😉
I was 7 in 1984 and my mam worked in the local pub for a lovely couple who owned it at the time.
I remember spending many hours in there with my mam and sister during the holidays… messing on the pool table and listening to the juke box on free vend… I remember when they started serving crinkle cut chips in a ‘basket supper’😀👍
    My list;
    10. Run to you (Bryan Adams)
    9. Legs (ZZ Top)
    8. Missing You (John Waite)
    7. Give it up (KC and the sunshine band)
    6. Ghostbusters (Ray Parker Jnr.)
    5. Wake me up before you go-go (Wham!)
    4. I want to break free (Queen)
    3. I just called to say I love you (Stevie Wonder)
    2. Born in the USA (Bruce Springsteen)
    1. Do they Know it Christmas (Band Aid)
Your 100% right Dean… the list does keep changing😀
I might do this again an a months time and see what it looks like then😀👍

I was 7 in 1984 so a lot of these songs were around me from memory, and it is a period I look back fondly. My top 10 ten songs from this year would be a retrospective of what still sounds decent to me now.
    Dance Hall Days
    Radio Ga Ga
    This Charming Man
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Dancing With Tears in My Eyes
    What Is Love?
    Let's Go Crazy
    Speed Your Love To Me
    Wouldn't Be It Good
    Last Christmas

I like Welcome to The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, although it may have been released the following year. It's my favourite by them and one of my favourites from the whole decade.
Wouldn't it Be Good is another classic! Great list.
