I don't think there are many people that were young adults in the nineties that didn't have a massive crush on Hope Sandoval! 😍
Her on stage persona was genuine shyness and stage fright. She didn't like getting up in front of an audience. I think that's one of the things that makes her so unique, in a positive way.
I was a young adult then but only heard this song (and loved it). I have actually never seen her before until now. I would have had a crush on her if I did.
Truly. She was the mysterious, waifish, dreamy muse.
Had??
Show me someone who loves getting in front of thousands of people to be judged and ridiculed, and I'll show you a psychopath. She's normal.
Yep, and still. Just looked her up... damn if she's not 3 years older than me, would have sworn I was at least 10 years older than her.
Some part of the emotion of the song is missing when this is played without the slide guitar, I think. It's still a good live performance though. And to the poster above, yes, dudes crushed on Hope Sandoval big time lol.
Very much needed that slide. It's the icing.
+1
@Brad and Lex, find an album version.
1000%. The slide guitar adds to the haunting quality of the song.
This song without slide guitar is like spaghetti without sauce.
It’s a shame they reacted to this acoustic live version and not the hypnotic sounding studio version that hits you in the feels with the slide guitar 😔
It’s a shame they reacted to this acoustic live version and not the hypnotic sounding studio version that hits you in the feels with the slide guitar 😔
This version isn’t bad, but I agree that listening without seeing makes the song come across differently.
I honestly prefer this version over the other because she sounds amazing, raw, and even look vulnerable which gives a vibe to this song.
Looking at her, it’s like you can just feel what she’s feeling. Idk how to even put it into words lol
Studio versions are not true sound, they are processed to sell records. Live is the way to listen to Mazzy star. The sound is way better with less fake.
@@skiptindle5976 agree to disagree.
The older I get, the more I prefer live versions. You need that extra bit of soul when yours gets weary…
Mazzy Star has always been the dark secret that could destroy my credibility as a metalhead. I have had their CDs and records hidden in my apartment for decades.
I feel you on that . 😂
Me too!! Had a huge crush on her back in the day!! 🤘
There is something dark about them....it makes sense
I smoke weed on my UA-cam channel & i do reaction videos too😅💨
Ghost on a Highway (I think that's the name) is pretty METAL though.
Hope Sandoval was and still is one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices and faces in music. You hang on her ever word because of her captivating delivery.
This is at the annual benefit concert for The Bridge School that's hosted by Neil Young. They teach kids with speech and physical impairments, including Young's 2 boys with cerebral palsy. He also hosts the artists volunteering their time at his ranch, and when Tom Yorke (Radiohead) was practicing Cinnamon Girl on piano, Young suggested he play it on the original piano with which he recorded it.
Heart has appeared, and done their awesome Zepp covers, here on YT...
She really epitomizes the sound of thet 90s in this song. Sad slow and emotional. So good.!
This was at The Bridge School benefit. I went there with two classmates and one of my teachers my senior year of high school. MAZZY WAS AMAZING. Also performing was Tom Petty, and Neil Young. It's an all acoustical concert. Best concert of my life.
WOWOWOW!!! AMAZING!! I've watched this video many, many times over the years, and thought of how lucky the people in the audience were to experience this concert! What a lineup!
After this, Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane would be perfecto.
Correct!
Dragging Hooks would have made a good Halloween song. I also like River Waltz.
As someone in his 40s, this takes me back to my younger years....and a girl i dated one summer. I remember one night listening to this song while I drove her home... and it playing in my head as we made out on her doorstep after I dropped her off. While it was a nice fling, it was not one of my serious relationships in my life. But that moment, with this song in my head, a pretty girl in my arms, with the smell of wet grass after a thunderstorm, and the sound o f summer crickets.... will always be special to me. It reminds me of one special moment when I was young. The girl and the day have faded away but the music and feeling still remain and give me a smile.
Hope Sandoval was so shy but it made her voice so unique and I LOVED her voice and Mazzy Star!!
I grew up on punk, ska and reggae but Hope Sandoval was something different. For me she represented all that was good in the world. Its like she could walk through a war zone and stop all the killing and slaughter with her haunting angelic voice.
This performance is a fundraiser for The Bridge School, which is a school for special needs kids. All money raised goes to the school and the bands that play do so for free. It's a very worthy cause and more bands should do this.
Kudos to Mazzy Star for this. What an outstanding performance.
I've commented this before, about this song, but it's always true to me.
"Fade Into You" is what it sounds like to be sitting in your living room, stoned, watching the snow come down.
Don't remember where I read that, but it's one of the most apt descriptions of this I've ever heard.
Lex looks perplexed and Brad looks mesmerized
Her voice and the hypnotic way she phrases goes deep. If Im stressed or not able to sleep I'll put the album track on. The way she phrases is like gently flying through clouds. Mesmerizing.
It’s very hard for me to listen to this song anymore. It reminds me of someone I loved very much and we can’t be together. Every time I hear this song, I think of her and I cry. I love the songs you guys pick though.
You have to sever that link in your mind and heart, bro. I know exactly what you're describing, but you have to let yourself ugly-cry it out of your system, as long as it takes. Eventually you'll reclaim it and will no longer associate it with her. I did the same with Cocteau Twins' Carolyn's Fingers
I was once listening to Mazzy on a long drive and passed my exit by like 10 miles. She is the epitome of zone.
This may be one of my favorite reactions from you two. You seemed mesmerized and lulled by the song.
Stacey"s popping up everywhere. Lol 😜
@@ev4683 Hi 👋
@@scapito g'day Stace, hope life's treating you well. Will see you on live chat later this week.😉
"Into Dust" is another great one by them that you should do :)
That song was used in an episode of House, third season called Informed Consent.
Second this
Absolutely Amazing Song that should be one of your Next Reaction Videos Use the Official Video studio version
The live version should have been the one on The Later Show w/Jools Holland
A studio version though, not a live clip!
Mazzy Star had a sound that was ethereal, haunting and defining of its era.
Timeless classic. Hope Sandoval is an amazing singer…..it needs that slide guitar though!
She was a goddess. Mazzy has the voice of the moment
Hope Sandoval simply has one of the most haunting voices ever
Awesome how an entire crowd shuts up and listens.
You guys are super mesmerised by her haha! No comment in between just enjoying. Mazzy Star were wonderful!
This was a great performance, never heard it played acoustic. For the real haunting sound give the album version a go sometime when you get a chance. The guitar work coupled with her voice is amazing!
Still get chills every time I hear this. It's one of those "teleports you back to a certain time" songs, just like 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins.
I remember hearing this when it came out, beautiful and haunting. Hope Sandoval was so unique and beautiful performer.
The 90s were great for female fronted alt rock. Bjork, Mazzy Star, Belly, and the Sundays were all faves of mine back in the day.
THE ICICLE WORKS "BIRDS FLY" (WHISPER TO A SCREAM)
So this song for me will always have been that comedown song after a night of partying. Just me and my gf at the time, falling asleep on her balcony at 3 am or sitting in the parking lot of a 24 hr greasy spoon after trying to sober up on bottomless coffee. Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to then. It's a comfortable memory that reminds me of a time when I had so much but thought I had so little.
this reaction needs the album version.
Hope is just an absolute legend. Also - loving the channel Brad & Lex!
She was the anti-star star. Walking off stage and not acknowledging the audience was just who she was. So refreshing. And the song....no frills....just unloading emotion and a poetic deeply emotional way.
Rare these says with all the pyrotechnics, back up dancers, clown costumes, vulgarity passing as lyrics. Stuff like this would never go over with high school/college crowd.
Oh how I miss the Bridge School benefit shows. A weekend of all acoustic performances, by incredible musicians.
She has a hauntingly beautiful voice
Now you have to try Portishead
Hope is a siren and I crash into those rocks everytime I hear this song.
You guys should react to…
Portishead - Roads
🎸🤘
Roads and Sour Times is a great way to jump into them. I was lucky enough to catch the Roseland Ballroom show in NYC that was released.
Edit: 2 of the 3 shows that would eventually become the live release. I miss the Roseland Ballroom so much. I have seen bands from Nine Inch Nails to Phish there.
What an unbelievably strange decision to do a live for the first….you guys are always perplexing me!
Brad could not describe it better, this song 🎵 takes not only her but all of us to the place that only us knows .
Spot on comments about the slide guitar.
It's the mood setter and atmosphere of the song.
The slide guitar gives it a hypnotic alluring feel to it.
The most beautiful, mysterious, and haunting vocalist of modern music. Hope Sandoval is an exquisite treasure that will never be duplicated.
I love this song
"Look on down from the bridge" will have you crying your eyes out.
This song is 56 times better if you shut your eyes while listening. Let the song fill your body, the way smoke fills a bottle.
I would have to say that is probably the most beautiful song in my opinion.🥲
I have to agree that the studio version is something that should be listened to 🤘🤘
Absolutely love Mazzy Star, Such a haunting voice.
They are stunned...just like everybody else who ever heard this song for the first Fking time.
One of my favorite songs by them Hope is still doing her thing.
So hypnotic, Hope you still have many carrying a torch for you .your poetic delivery created a gravitational pull on my heart strings that never let go .
This live performance doesn’t due them justice , you can’t feel the music melt into ur soul in this version 😎
Lex hitting on how important humanity in music actually is! That's why I, as a Record producer, insist my clients put the work in to avoid digital "fixing" when we hit the studio. 😉
This is who I think of when someone mentions "shoegaze" music.
Mazzy gives off a 70's vibe to me. Her voices really reminds me of Hippie music.
I remember my friend put me on to this album & I remember being like "wow" just awe struck by how beautiful her singing was. Thanks for doing this amazing song. Everyone needs to hear Hope's singing
“Look on down from the bridge” by mazzy star hits hard
Hope Sandoval dated William Reid from The Jesus and Mary Chain for a few years and sings on their '92 album a duet called Sometimes Always. Other Shoegaze songs/bands well worth exploring:
Ride: OX4, Time Machine, I don't know where it comes from, Black Nite Crash...
Lush: Leaves me Cold, Bitter
The Jesus and Mary Chain: She, Head On, Reverence, Almost Gold....]
Other angelic voices:
Camera Obscura: Swimming Pool, I should be suspended from class, French Navy...
She & Him (Zooey Deschanel + M. Ward): I put a spell on you (live on Conan), I could have been your girl, In the Sun
Coeur de Pirate: Francis, Pour un Infidele, Jeb Rand (english song as part of Armistice)
She is a Goddess that walks among us. She is timeless and ageless.
Have always loved this tune. Her voice and the music to the song has that dreamy/mesmerizing quality to it. It literally takes me to another plain of mental existence.
one of my favorite songs, constantly in my playlist! nice reaction!
That style of music is called Shoegaze from a style of music called paisley underground music that was popular in the mid 80s it was popular style of rock music from the mid or late 1980s thru the 1990s ! It’s supposed to represent a chilled inner self version of rock similar to dreampop ! All these genres made up some really awesome music like the Band my bloody valentine and Slowdive , Cocteau Twins and so on... Mazzy Star was a great band until the lead guitarist passed away last year I think ! Their music is a chilled but energized vibe !
Oh wow, I forgot about paisley underground.
@@Travelinmatt1976 Yeah I guess the Paisley Underground genre kind of got overlooked because there were so many genres of rock music at that time , most folks that were around during that time probably just associates it with being just shoegaze or dream pop because how big those became little later on there was a definite hippie vibe to it , loved that too !
an Angel!!
Mazzy come back!!!
"...she just woke up." Spot on!
This song reminds me of a girl I fell in love with WAY back in 1994 when I was 21. Man, those were good times. Every good memory of my youth had a fantastic song a tied to it.
Love Mazzy Star. This whole album (So Tonight That I Might See) is such a vibe. The singer (Hope Sandoval) had such an ethereal sound to her vocals. I recommend you listening to the studio version to get the maximum vibe from this song, though it was nice watching the band perform it.
Gotta react to the Jesus and Mary chain sometimes always featuring Hope Sandoval
Hope Sandoval is an underrated gem of a singer. This was their biggest AOR hit, but they had many great songs.
Bless this girl, she went through the Mill with fame. Wherever she is I hope she's well. This song is Summer for me, laying on the grass with headphones in. Bliss.
Lex is a sweetheart - such thoughtful comments.
Wow, lately with Toadies, Pumpkins and now Mazzy, you are igniting some incredibly touching memories of deep in my youth. The music of the 90s was an amazing soundtrack to life back then. I deeply miss those days. Things were much simpler. Do more 90s. Please. It’s become my therapy. Thanks.
Same!!! Such nostalgia. What I wouldn't give to go back or at least have slowed down and enjoyed it more.
Yeep. Back when we didn't really give a shit what people thought. I miss it
Should’ve done the video. 90’s “Adult” Rock was always the best!
You guys have GOT to do more Mazzy Star. The album before this was my bedtime album for all of HS in 1990. Their best song IMO, and one of the best songs ever made, is called “Look On Down From The Bridge”. Sopranos fans will remember that one.
Thanks for the reaction.
That's Hope Sandoval.
Please check out her solo work as you have time. It's amazing. "Drop" or "Suzanne".
(Or more Mazzy Star)
RIP David Roback
Look On Down From the Bridge and Into Dust are another couple of great choons 👌
First time hearing, I like this! Thanks for putting me on
She was always pulled back from the world ,you can tell that by her demeanor! But she had that voice that was so innocent and soft! Beautiful voice for sure!
GOD FROM DAY ONE I LOVED THIS!
Guys ur showing alot of people different songs been awesome never seen this the different styles of music has been fun cheers all the best brad and lexxie
This was my music back in the day. No cell phones, just living! Candle box is a band you should try
I have it on good authority that listening to Mazzy Star while rolling on X in the 90s was an amazing experience
Hope Sandoval used to sing with one of my favorite groups called The Jesus and Mary Chain. She is mesmerizing in those songs as well. She has that gift.
RIP David Roback... What a Vocal delivery
The most tear inducing song ever . So simple and beautiful
Just love this ,thanks guys
Aw I wish it had been the studio version, that slide guitar is something else
Always loved this song. Imbedded in my brain.
AN ABSOLUTE MUST HEAR,, KATE BUSH "RUNNING UP THAT HILL"
I have loved this since the 1st time I hear Mazzy do her thing!
THE INNOCENCE MISSION "BRIGHT AS YELLOW"
A lot of babies were made to this song.
‘Look on down from the bridge’ is another great song from them
Right? I was so surprised when it showed up in Rick and morty
You should really listen to the album version of this song. The slide guitar in the production version is gorgeous and adds a lot to the haunting feeling of this song.
BTW don’t abandon live versions, just do them after you know what the original sounds like! I agree it’s cool to see the individual components and how it’s all put together.
I love how they are just taking it in
Hope Sandoval has a really great, unique and distinctive voice. Also a real beauty back then!
I listen rock all my life. But i find this song 2 years ago. That sons really awesome!
I have been listening to this songs since tge 90s, love it!!!! Mazzy Star!!
