30 years later and this song still gives me goosebumps. Love Hope’s voice.
This was always the Last Song and if a guy wasn't paying attention to his girl when it came on he'd find me dancing with her to this. Got into a lot of trouble back then...worth every minute,
So true!
I've had a crush on Hope Sandoval ever since the 1st time I heard this.
If you haven’t, check out her solo work and her other band, the Warm Inventions.
@@twenty3enigma Who? I think you had a brain fart, buddy. 😅
I find this song amplifies your mood. It can make you feel in love, wanting to lounge by a camp fire, calm, happy, serene, like you are surfing at the edge of the galaxy, or make you bawl like a baby for things you never knew you lost.
That’s a very beautiful way to describe it 🙋🏻♀️
Exactly-so deep! I love music that touches the soul!☮️🌈
I agree! I love this song because it can kinda mean anything you need it to mean. It’s really introspective, IMO. I’ve never really felt it as a love song, but cool!
yes. thisss...
Well stated and spot on.
Hope has simply one of the most haunting voices ever. Everything she touches is automatically spiritual and deep.
Hope Sandoval has an amazing voice. When Mazzy Star hit the mainstream, there was nothing else like them getting air play
Agreed. She used to get a lot of shit because she had bad stage fright and would almost never move on stage and had the lighting obscure her, almost having her in darkness at live shows.
@@martymar1964 She had /has the worst stage fright I have seen in over 50 years of gig going. At a Mazzy Star gig in Birmingham (UK) around 1995 , she walked off stage after around 4 songs. She said "you are too demanding " very sad.
Also others I have seen having issues with stage freight are Lana Del Rey (used to puff non stop on cigarettes ), Hannah Reid (London Grammar ) is physically sick before live gigs .Even Florence Welch suffers , which may surprise many .
But Hope is the only one I have ever seen exit the stage very quickly after the start of the gig.
The melancholy and angst of a generation in one beautiful song. The steel guitar makes it EVERYTHING.
Oddly, became the template of a lot of 2000's indie bands.
That Southwestern sound❤😁
back in the 90s when i was 14-15, i visited my cousin in Long Beach (she was in college), and she took me to meet her boyfriend at the time. we ended up at this random house in LA. turned out her boyfriend's dad was the drummer in mazzy star. i was in total shock and could barely speak. i loved this song so much and the fact that i got to meet the drummer was too much for my young mind to handle. but i still remember that moment to this day!
Did you get to meet Hope? Or even tell your cousin about it and see if it was possible for her to meet Hope or something?
RIP Mazzy Star Guitarist David Roback (1958-2020.)
This came out in 1993 when I was in high school… and had several slow dances to this at house parties in college.
God, I miss the 90s ❤
Same!
I was just starting high school that year. What a great time for music.
Agreed, everyone always goes on about the 80s but to me the 90s was where it was at. I was a teenager in the 80s and I just always hated all the big hair and other things associated with it. But the 90s were so much more fun. Maybe it was because I just enjoyed my college years much more than my high school years
I'm class of 94 and this was THE slow dance at our senior prom.
"The Sundays" have a similar feel. Their cover of "Wild Horses" is great. Also "Here's where the story ends" or "Summertime'. Very much a vibe.
Totally! Would love to hear some Sundays. I am a long time fan.
What Torrey said!
Sunday's are a terrific shout! Another Flavour is a superb song.
I’ve been suggesting the Sundays for a while now!
Looooooooove The Sundays!!!
LILITH FAIR was everything in the 90s! Female artists really had a strong presence in the music scene. Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morrissette, Liz Phair and so many more. You have *A LOT* to check out from the 90s!
Indigo girls were always one of my favorites. Amazing harmonies ❤
@@hollydeitch1977 They were actually a late 80s group, but they were still relevant in the 90s and today!
@@ReleaseTheQuackers I was speaking in reference to them being at Lilith Fair.
@@hollydeitch1977 GOTCHA!!! Lilith Fair was the BOMB!!
Lilith Fair was Sarah McLachlan's baby, her way of proving that an all-female bill would work, and it did...I went to all 3 shows/years...was the logical sequel to the travelling Lollapalooza...I don't think Mazzy Star played any of the shows in NY as the lineup constantly changed...but I wish I did see them...they are a bit like Cowboy Junkies...
Into Dust is a hauntingly beautiful song by Mazzy Star. Hope's voice is amazing. Highly recommend.
Gonna check it out! Fade into you is the only song I’ve had in my music collection by Mazzy Star.
They used that song in an episode of House. It nearly broke me how beautiful and sad it was.
The woman BREAKS people with that voice!!! 💯😎
All these years later- and I don’t care where I am- this song will stop me in my tracks. It’s so effortless and timeless. We need a new word for “ethereal”.
FYI - Another artist with an ethereal voice is Natalie Merchant. She has an accomplished solo career and used to be the lead singer for a band called 10,000 maniacs.
several of us have requested NATALIE MERCHANT several times, I'm sure they'll get around to her. 👍😃👍
The entire tigerlily album is amazing.
I so hope they do some Natalie Merchant
From my neck of the woods, East Los Angeles, proud that she broke through with this gem of a song, still good 30 yrs later…
Probably one of the most played songs the year it came out. Hope Sandoval has a unique and beautiful voice that I have always found haunting. And as soon as I saw the song choice, I knew that Amber would be doing the "Amber Sway"
I’m a 70’s gal so I never heard of this band or song but it’s haunting and beautiful. Thanks for introducing me to a new one you two!
Still one of My Favorite songs of the 90's .. you will just get lost in a good place with this Masterpiece ❤💯
Exactly. We’ll put.
I recall hearing Mazzy Star’s “Halah” song that was before this on Alternative Radio while driving. That’s one of only two times I pulled over and stated writing lyrics I could remember from the song. I had to know who did this song and who the singer was. Hope Sandoval is my favorite female singer along with Stevie Nicks.
@@crafty1096 I love it when music hits like that. 🎶❤️
Dreamy, trippy, laid-back song. Another great reaction, y'all. 👍
I have seen Siouxsie, Tori, Bjork and Hope in concert and they all easily rank amongst the most unforgettable musical experiences one can get.
Tori Amos? "Losing My Religion" and "Butterfly" are masterpieces.
That’s a nice list. ✌️
Like 3 of the 4 you mentioned...not really a Tori fan, she is like a weak Kate Bush...
@@lawrencedavis4406 Is she trying to be Kate Bush though?
that would have been an amazing experience
Not surprised at Jay’s dual reaction. It’s a haunting song that grows on you.
Welcome to the ‘90s.🤣❤️
I love this band so much. I saw them perform live at Coachella once, they played outdoors right as sunset was happening, it was 100% magical. One of my top ten concert experiences ever and I'd say Mazzy Star is a top 10 band of all time for me too.
I was at that show too. My friends and I ran to her set. We were all getting teary, hugging each other. Such an amazing moment I will forever cherish!
This song feels like floating weightlessly along in a bubble. It's simutaneously comfortable and sad.
Hope Sandoval is who these new dark pop teeny boppers should thank for creating their sound.
She has such a haunting voice
Definitely some mood music. Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies were my go-to bands for just mellowing out and relaxing.
Love The Cowboy Junkies. Common Disaster is my fav
I second the request for Cowboy Junkies and their fantastic singer Margo Timmins. They are Canadian and have sort of "Great Plains Goth" vibe. They have so many good songs over a 35-year career that its hard to suggest one to start with, but I'll suggest "Crescent Moon" or "Sun Comes Up, It's Tuesday Morning"
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Check out The Velvet Underground's original version of Sweet Jane! I love both versions.
One of those songs that defined 90's
I agree!
the 90's sucked after the few holdovers from the 80's were gone music was basically dead. The alternative crap like this one and grunge killed rock music with the exception of a few here and there. Now they are even killing country music with this alternative country.
@@sparkyth67 you're tripping. It's like saying the 80s killed disco music. Totally different genres and vibes. Don't get me wrong, I love 80's music! I am just saying there's such a thing as different generations of music.
@@Adeus1 disco was dead before the 80s. Any artists now has no creativity everything is too computerized and auto tune crap anymore.
@@sparkyth67 exactly. ***Wait. Correction. Not true. Everything you hear in the radio is auto tuned. There are great indie artists!
Love Mazzy Star. This whole album is awesome. Brings back good memories.
I listen to these type of songs and I am overwhelmed with such a powerful melancholic nostalgia. It’s because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person. no matter what else has changed in you or the world, that one song stays the same, just like that moment.
Great group. "Into Dust" also a fantastic vibe. And anything by "The Sundays".
The "vibe" is called "shoegazing", moody, acoustic guitar with minor chords and electronic. It is meant to be chillout music, head swinging, porch sitting music.
One of my favorite songs from the 90s! It is so dreamy and mesmerizing - I can close my eyes and fade into the song.
Something about the Ladies of the 90's .. also check out: Fiona Apple - "Shadow Boxer" .. Lisa Loeb - "Stay" .. The Cardigans - "Lovefool" ... Sarah Mclachlan - "Sweet Surrender" .. Sophie B. Hawkins - "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" ..
Man, that list takes me straight into the 90s... a great time in my life. I'm gonna put these on a playlist right now.
Guys. You hit me hard with this one. This song, and Hope Sandoval's incredible voice, mesmerized me from the first time I heard it, and it still does three decades later. They were never HUGE as far as a live group goes, due to Hope's innate shyness (she insisted there never be a spotlight on her while on stage, EVER). Sadly, we lost guitarist and songwriter David Roback in 2020. This is one of the most enduing songs you'll find, period. If you do another Mazzy Star song, check out "Into Dust". It'll tug right at your feels.
🖤
Absolutely "Into dust"
I had heard that Hope Sandoval suffered from stage fright, but didn't know any details. I'm always impressed by artists who push through personal discomfort to perform for the people.
Mazzy Star!!! Now we're talking! Not called Dream Pop for nuthin'!
90s WAS a mood
The best decade of moods! Helped me get through High School...lol
Being 49 I've adored this song for many years. Hope is such a wonderful and amazing singer, but let's not forget the beautiful guitar work of the late, great David Roback who sadly passed away 2 years ago. RIP David.
That lilting guitar in the background is very reminiscent of George Harrison. Does anybody else feel that? 🌺✌️
As mentioned earlier The Sundays "Here's where the story ends", a similar style and a great song.
"Fade Into You" is what it sounds like to be sitting in your living room, stoned, watching the snow come down.
Don't remember where I read that, but it's one of the most apt descriptions of this I've ever heard.
For that moody emotional female-inspired 1990s vibe you can't do any better than Fiona Apple, Tori Amos or 10,000 Maniacs. Happy discovering!
What about 'The Sundays '.
This style and more (as I wrote in a rely above):
There were a lot of great women musician-songwriters who came up then. Listened a lot to Liz Phair (some cathartic stuff there LOL), saw Sarah McL. live when Paula Cole opened (got her CD after that show and listened to it a ton), pj harvey... tons of Polly Jean's stuff, and saw Luscious Jackson live (they will never get old). There were solo works & multiple bands with some overlap of the likes of the Deal sisters, Tanya Donnely, Kristin Hersch A little earlier, music goddess of the time Kim Gordon was kicking around great stuff with Sonic Youth (and eventually was requested by The Breeders to direct their "Last Splash" video with Spike Jonze). There was so much great music from women in the '90s. It's like someone left the gate open and they found their time to emerge.
If someone like this particular song I doubt Fiona Apple and Tori Amos are the artist theyd listen to. Theyv got the 90s vibe but not quite similar. natalie merchant in the 90s had a somewhat similar vibe. But if there were one song that kind of that really moody 90s vibe by another artist I think one o them would be Drive by Bic Runga.
This song makes you homesick for a time and place that doesn’t exist anymore.
The 70s influence in the music along with the lyrics, it just hits so hard.. 😭
Mazzy Star! '90s alternative , shoegaze/psychedelic/dream-pop music. Fuzzy guitars, feedback and ethereal/dreamy /moody vocals. Also a desert rock kind of feel as well. Slide guitar (often heard in country music and blues) I don't know why they had broke up so soon during the '90s. It was odd. They were good. See their other videos like "Into Dust", "Flowers in December", "Halal", etc. They were from California, Hope Sandoval is Mexican American , pretty, with nice dreamy voice. If yall like this. Check out bands like Slowdive, Jesus and Mary Chains, My Bloody Valentine, Cowboy Junkies, Lush, Ride, Silversun Pickups, Lana Del Rey, etc
Also Norah Jones is similar! (2000s) lol. Thats what yall were thinking about, same vibe, video and music. Or maybe The Cardigans ('90s/''00s)?
Time for some Sneaker Pimps... check out "6 Underground" for some 90's goodness. Electronic music duo with a female lead singer that is a vibe all to herself.
Her voice with these lyrics is everything. That guitar just cries its sadness while she tells her story with stoic gen x melancholy... This song still gives me goosebumps.
So happy u gave Mazzy a chance. Its such a melancholy vibe many dont get. We hippies love her. It is mello, easy, deep and a bit erie and dark. Its one of those bean bag chair, glass of bourbon, candles and headphone type of songs. U guys crack me up, love it. Thanx so much, Blessings
Glad you finally got around to Mazzy. She and this song are both hauntingly beautiful.
The guitar played in A major coupled with her voice is magic. Another 90's band I think you would like is Toad The Wet Sprocket. Try Something's Always Wrong. Great band got overshadowed by grunge.
Yes!! pray to your gods and before you were born are great.
Hope Sandoval sings one of my favourite duets with the Jesus and Mary Chain.. it's called Sometimes Always. And I adore it. You should give it a listen
Yes! 😀👍
David roback wrote this song for the band.hes the lead guitar player.he past away they never recovered from his loss
One artist you should put on your list is Jeff Buckley! From “Last Goodbye” to “Hallelujah”, he was a treasure taken from us too soon. His voice is amazing ❤
Yes, Jeff Buckley was truly something. My old boss at a record label introduced him to me, along with some other gems.
His Dad Tim Buckley was amazing as well , check out Sweet Surrender
Mazzy Star is the epitome of Shoegaze genre !
Mazzy Star is ethereal, perfect for day dreaming in a coffeehouse.
To continue that give, I recommend Portishead, the singer’s voice and the music is like NOTHING else you have heard. “Glory Box” and “Sour Times”
The 90s in my opinion had the best music of any decade.
This song makes me feel like I’m dancing on the beach, it just transports you to somewhere else
Very atmospheric and melancholy. It successfully conveys the longing that comes with unrequited love. "Strange you never knew!" The visuals help a great deal too. She looks stuck in sadness.
I love that early to mid 90s music that was played on MTV (when they still played music videos). Toad the Wet Sprocket "Good Intentions", The Breeders "Cannonball", Blind Melon "No Rain", Beck "Loser", Stone Temple Pilots "Interstate Love Song" - just so, so many good ones. Glad you guys are getting into them.
A song about unrequited love. So sad and hauntingly beautiful ❤❤
Love how soft spoken Hope Sandoval is but she is a captivating.
This was a very Big Hit when it came out! IMO, this is the definition of Eclectic Beautiful! Dreamy.....Love it!
She does a great duet with JESUS AND MARY CHAIN a band which you have not played ever. Great, duet - try it!
In High School I would fall asleep at night to this tune. Instantly transports me back to those days.
You guys need to hit the breeders, hole, L7, etc get the 90’s girl rock!! Some really good bands
It's still one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Hope Sandoval's voice is so hypnotic! This song and another 90s song with a similar vibe, Cowboy Junkies' Misguided Angel, remind me of when I first met my husband
Finally! Hope Sandoval!!!
Its such an amazing song, couldn't imagine not digging the vibe of it.
I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile now. It’s a vibe. Also was featured in one of the best movies, Angus. Note, it was also featured in Starship Troopers.
You guys absolutely have to check out "Down by the Water" by PJ Harvey. That song was HUGE right around a similar time frame as this one.
YES!!!
Agree!
Hope Sandoval has one of the most ethereal sounding voices in alternative music. Both of her groups have similar sounds.
This and "Into Dust" are my favorite Mazzy Star songs. Into Dust is haunting.
Please react to Susanna Hoffs cover of "I'll keep It With Mine" or her cover of "I'll Be Your Mirror" for Female Friday. Susanna did those songs for the Rainy Day album which was produced by David Roback. Susanna and David were the original Mazzy Star. You can sort of hear what would eventually become Mazzy Star in her covers of those two songs.
I think this is one of the most “Perfect” songs ever recorded. There’s a Live Version of this song that is a must see.
Everyone in their 20s in the 1990s remembers this, because it was so often played at the end of a long long night of fun when the sun was rising and the everything was smoothing out and shutting down.
Thank you so much for this gem. The wonderful memories from a very special chapter in life.
This sing brings back memories from college back in the 90s.
All their music was amazing during the 90s. Great group. Her voice brought it all together. Fortunately was able to see them a few times. Love you guys 🙂❤
Her voice is beautiful and mesmerizing. Twenty years later and it never gets old
An unintentional "Goth" song if ever I heard one. Hauntingly beautiful and melancholy.
Every time I would search for "Fade Into You" from Nashville, I would come across this song but this is my first time really listening to it. Thumbs up. Really loving this.
Flowers in December is another Mazzy Star hit
Total mood changer.. I remember the first time I heard it back in the day. Love it.
I love this song so 90's!
"Moodiness" perfectly describes a lot of songs from that era that I loved!
One of the most beautiful songs ever. 'nuff said.
Mazzy Star is one of my favorites! They have a lot of great music that I believe you both would enjoy. Halah is one of my favorites by them
So nostalgic of senior year of high school way back when. Great reaction!
The amount of time I spent as a teen listening to this album while writing sad poetry is kind of ridiculous. But Hope Sandoval’s voice is sublime. “Five String Serenade” is another good one.
Amber, you are right about your assessment of 90s music. And to me, as a teen, it was like the antithesis of 80s focus on glam and show. Grunge was definitely the opposite of 80s hair bands, and the 90s women-whatever genre-were all about empowerment, feeling their deep feelings, doing their own thing, etc. 90s alternative and grunge music spoke to us awkward and big-feeling teens and made us feel…seen? I guess? Idk, but it was a connec ion I don’t think I’ve quite had with music since.
Tori Amos is also a MUST when it comes to 90s female artists. She was (and still is) just so cool. But there are sooo many awesome 90s female artists and you guys are just starting to scratch the surface! 😊
So well said. It is a reflection of the shift in culture. Children of the exuberant materialistic 80's coming into their own in the 90's. Even though it was grunge, I think, there was an optimism about how the world in the 90's would be different. Maybe we were just saturated by the 80's and needed to feel something real and more stripped down. I know the 70's and 80's had ground breaking women but the 90's women, upon reflection, were different and progressive. Generation X.
The Sundays "Here's Where The Story Ends"
...Nuff Said.
Loved this song ever since I first heard it back in the early 90's, so many (too many, now) years ago.
This song, Hope & the band is like a moody desert stark eerie kind of alt-country...it has a David Lynchian feel, even Lana Del Rey later on...love it...
I love Lana Del Rey. Her sound is Hope Sandoval, Julee Cruise, and Cocteau Twins in one ❤
I love the way Hope slides her voice in this song to match the slide guitar sound. Beautiful
Never gets old.
Memories. The Year 1998 It's 2 AM i just dropped off my girlfriend, tops down on My 68 VW driving in San Diego and this song is playing on the radio. what a Magical time.
I love this song! Have been waiting for ya'lls reaction!❤
Oh guys, if you just love Mazzy Star, and you want a similar modern vibe, check out a band called Dum Dum Girls, and the song “Coming Down.”
I absolutely love this song. I couldn't stop listening to it when it first came out! Hope Sandovals' voice is mesmerizing. She is also extremely shy, so I give her so much credit for performing on stage in front of so many people!
Melancholia, nostalgia, & a lost love
My favorite Mazzy Star video is a live performance of Flowers in December.
Such a murky, ethereal quality to this song. I've always loved it.
This era of this kind of music is why this type of music is legendary
