IZ was a national treasure to his people.
And for a good reason, he was such a delight and had the voice of an angel and he did so much for the Hawaiian people, their rights, and independence.
When he died the Hawaiian flag at the state capitol building was flown at half-mast, he's one of only 3 people at the time to be honored like that in Hawaii, and the only one of those 3 that wasn't a member of government.
I think some commenters said it already but around 10k people attended his funeral to celebrate his life!
Love IZ I have couple of his songs to go sleep too
Yessah he was and IZ 🤙🏽
4th generation Native Hawaiian Japanese American 🌈 IZ will always and forever be our National Treasure. Thank you for your love 💕
@@debbysmith5346so many of us love your culture, people and way of life. And many of us are so sorry for what our ancestors did and what some continue to do. They don't represent the vast majority of haoles who love and respect the ʻĀina from a haole that was blessed to be born and raised in Hawaii💙
This is literally the best version of this song ever recorded.
Eva Cassidy is certainly in that conversation as well.
Sorry Judy, it's Iz's song now.
We miss you Iz.
No.
One take. Perfection.
Katherine McPhee
Few, if any other songs make me feel so peaceful.
I can't imagine a better funeral than he had.
That's true!
This video was dedicated to him, and his memory, also it included video of his funeral
And the rock insisted that his character in Moana resemble IZ too
This guy walked into a studio in the middle of the night and recorded pure human happiness.
In one take...
And by all accounts in 1 take
When you get the chance, he also has a version of this song mixed with "What A Wonderful World " it is beyond beautiful!!!!!
Agreed, was about to make the same comment. And if you’re not familiar with the original by Louis Armstrong, then that is a must listen also, even if just for your own experience
this has to get more likes so they can react to it!
I like that version better
Me too! The mix is perfect and what I want my son to play at my memorial.
The voice of an angel. A gentle giant. One cannot see him without processing his size, but all of us wrestle with our hidden demons in our own way. If he used food to cope, well, so be it. His voice is a voice of peace, a voice that brought joy to everyone he knew, and a voice that the world badly needs more of. Most of us will never touch so many in our lives. RIP Iz.
R.I.P.
Well said
i don’t believe he passed because of his size (correct me if i’m wrong) but i 100% agree. he’d be a huge part of our salvation if he lived today. rest in paradise iz
@@AwesomeECKS2461 he did
He used to be a criminal he turned his life around.
My mom passed away a few days ago from cancer. My dad played this version in her ear buds for her as she passed. She loved this song and loved this version.
RIP to ur mom. Hope you're doing better now. it's tough losing a loved one.
There is a short documentary about IZ and this song, he was a big positive vibe for the Islands of Hawaii. Feel it in the throat every time I hear this song :)
I feel ya there. Every time.
He sang some of his other work in the documentary, there was a stunning song that blew me away, What would our ancestors think of us?.
@@christinerobinson9372 that's called Hawai'i '78. It's a masterpiece.
@@GildedWarriorz yeah. A truly great song, even for faraway folks like myself.
Hawaii way too expensive, here where I am in paradise Puerto Vallarta... hahahaha
They way Lex started smiling once he started to sing.
She can hit a note too
RIP "IZ" The world will always miss your beautiful heart.
Love this version of this song. I played it at my son's funeral. Rip baby Griffin💙💙💙
This rendition always makes me emotional!
Very poignant.
I read that he went into the studio with his ukulele and recorded this in one take. Amazing.
That’s the story. He called the studio at 3:00 am during a big storm and they gave him just a few minutes to record the song
Bruddah Is! Moe i Ka Maluhia 🙏🏼🤙🏼
This is my favourite song of all time .
this brings tears to my eyes but more joy to my heart that this man lived here on earth, even if only for a short time.
Always makes me cry! Just typing this makes me well up.
I cry every time I see this.
RIP IZ
Me too.
Same. I physically can't help it. A peferct mix of beauty and sadness.
I have to listen to this rarely even though I love it, because I become a blubbering fool with tear-soaked sleeves
Every damn time.....
This and Cats in the Cradle. It's like they are heart seeking missles to me. Oh, and when Bubba dies. Waterworks.
Met this guy one time when I was a little kid - early 90s or so. Me and my friend were walking in our neighborhood, Keaukaha, and a van drives by with IZ out the passenger window yelling "Haaaawaiian" at us. Lol. The van pulled into a house just ahead, so we went over and he gave us some stickers. Tales from hawaiian home lands lol.
Yessah Blessah!!! Keaukaha Homestead Cheee!!! 🤙🏽
IZ is my father's cousin. I remember hanging out with him when I was a kid. Ka ma ka veh veh O lee.
The end was his “paddle out” memorial. RIP IZ
Fun fact, he called the studio at 3am and because he was so nice they opened for him (within like 15 minutes of his call) to come in and record. He did this song in one take.
His ashes were spread at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997
Mahalo from Hawai'i.
And they had to search the building for a chair strong enough for him to sit and play on... but he was a giant heart of Polynesia. 🌅🌊🌴🌄
if only he lived today :( he’d be the salvation we all need. Iz was the living embodiment of happiness and joy. he was peace. mahalo braddah
@@AwesomeECKS2461 We have it all Recorded Forever🌺 Mahalo
Yessah 🤙🏽
such a soft voice. that they were celebrating his life is beautiful
If this doesn't put a smile on your face and a tear drop like a lemon drop .
Keep listening 😁
He was one of the most beloved island musicians Hawaii has had. His life and career were cut all too short due to his illness, but his music will live on forever. He has had many great song throughout his career, but I think that Lex would absolutely love hearing "Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" off his Facing Forward album.
I guess the other most beloved Hawaiian musician was Don Ho, singing 'Tiny Bubbles' - my father loved that song way back when and now I do too! ua-cam.com/video/mlCiDEXuxxA/v-deo.html
@@hmichaelr1 That's very true. Don Ho is an icon, though he is one of many iconic singers and groups from Hawaii, among those icon you could include Moe Keale, The Brothers Cazimero, Cecilio & Kapono, Ledward Kaapana, Kealiʻi Reichel, Kalapana, Ohta-san, Sam Ku West, Na Leo Pilimehana,, Mākaha Sons of Niʻihau (of which IZ was a founding member) and so many others. I think Hawaiian music needs to be appreciated more outside of the islands so it can spread the Aloha spirit around the world. :)
When my son was 1, this was his favorite song. Always cheered him up or helped him go to sleep.
If he's musically inclined, buy him a uke for Christmas.
Always loved this version. .
Especially when I was drunk and sad
Drunk and sad. That sounds like it should be awful but I know exactly what your mean and agree.
@@skygazer858
I'm good now.. was fucked up after the War .
I smoke weed and just a disgruntled old man lol
I may just be having a moment but this pulls on my heart strings so hard...so moving and beautiful it just gives me the feelz
Brad, you may be the first person I've ever heard say he's never seen The Wizard of Oz. I don't know how much you'd enjoy it now, but as a kid you would've loved it, like every other kid I've ever known.
Especially if you drop acid or mushrooms
IZ melded Somewhere over the Rainbow, and What a Wonderful World. He was also a Hawaiian treasure, think Elvis, and the Beatles rolled into one man. His funeral which was in the video was attended by 10,000 people. Also the instrument he is playing is called a ukulele (yoo-kuh-lay-lee).
That would be pronounced ‘ooo-koo-leh leh’ The Hawaiian pronunciation of vowels doesn’t match mainland USA. Lived there for 9 years, and if someone pronounced ukulele wrong you could see locals bristle.
So beautiful that it doesn’t matter what the lyrics! That was the Hokulea canoe that took his ashes out to be scattered near his brothers!
Damn Lex you got a nice little voice there. You should sing more.
Definitely look into the story of how this song was recorded. We almost never got this song.
the backstory of him recording that song is great
This song was written in 1939 for the movie The Wizard Of OZ. for Judy Garland . Iz sold over a million copies of the album with this song. He produced 2 more albums before he passed away over 25 years ago.
You now MUST do “E ala E” by Iz, my favorite song by Iz and has incredible meaning for Hawaii
yes !
Brad is always so clueless but Lex is the intellect to keep me watching these two.
Yeah and the whole time he's still smiling
I'd recommend Eva Cassidy's cover of Somewhere over the rainbow too.
Never could warm up to the ukulele... but, dude killed it.
Yeah - I've always hated hearing uke's played like guitars, instead of the way old timers like GEORGE FORMBY used to play - That's when ukelele's come alive. But that takes skill. I make an exception in this guy's case because my best friend played this song to her unborn child all through her pregnancy (how - i don't know!) and Millie came out the most beautiful little girl imaginable. We had to listen to it 5 times a day during the first year or so of her life outside the womb - so I grew to like it I guess! I think I prefer other versions to be truthful - but I've only just realized this guy died - I should have known - (how - I don't know!) - Sad to hear that though.
The Judy Garland version is worth a reaction, her voice is one of a kind and very powerful.
Wouldn't a duet of Judy and Iz on this song be awesome?
@@GranpaMike How?

Time for a movie reaction: Wizard of Oz.
Like others have mentioned, I became aware of Iz's version from the death of Dr. Greene on ER. Still tear up.
One of the saddest moments in television history. I was in my 40s and cried like a baby. I still tear up from that episode every time I hear the song.
Dr Greeeeeeeennnnnnneeee!! 😭😭😭😭
Love this song by Iz K. RIP, Iz. It's been a lot of years since I left Hawaii; this song always takes me back.
I believe he's one of those performers who became very famous after passing away. Great voice!
After I got out of the army I went to work for a Power Contractor. On September 11th 1992 Hurricane INIKI hit the Island of KAUAI, HAWAII. It devistated that Island. I was on that Island for 3 years of rebuilding the Telephone and Power. This guy IZ and Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash,David Crosby, and other's gave the worker's a free Concert. It was a great time in my life and this guy IZ does the best job on this song. 🌴🌄🐊 I felt so good being able to help the people of Kauai. That was a Cat. 5 hurricane. Sustained winds of 180 and gust of 227. I used to sing his ukulele version on kareoke night. Wow you guy's brought back a flood of great memories for this young 61 year old. Hope every Veteran had a great Veteran's day. Only way I can explain Kauai is it's like Fantasia. There are big huge Rainbows and little bitty one's. When I first got there everything was brown and dead from the salt water. Houses completely blown away. And Power lines and Telephone cable's were all on the ground. But I was there long enough that flora and fawns bounced back the first year. It was Da Kine for sho.
R.I.P IZ!! Your voice is now with the Angels.
“The Wizard of Oz” scarred my tiny brain when I was a kid. The books were wild. L. Frank Baum was on some good shit when he wrote them.
Brad, please do yourself a favor and watch The Wizard of Oz with Lex. Such a classic movie.
yawn
Such a masterpiece
One of my favorites. IZ LIVES.
rip big guy. when you understand from beginning this is in remembrance of him makes even more inspiring. the ashes on the sea at end is so touching.
Brad: “So does he mean literally over the rainbow like in a plane?”
Ha! "Is he gay? He's talking about rainbows.....I don't know."
@@rsw1227 🤣
Brad needs to relax!
We've said it enough times.
Just be in the flow of life.
PLEASE tell me Brad didn’t say that!
Awwww! Bruddah IZ! 😭 We miss him so much!💔 This was such a fantastic cover. I started to listen to him when I lived in Hawaii. We played this for my husband's Grandma when she passed away. She loved this song so much. 🤙💕🙏🇺🇸
Mah man Israel having his moment here! YEAH! R.I.P Legend 🙏🙏🌈
I’d play this song for my infant daughter in the NICU as she struggled in vain to live. I played it to her every night for three months. I can’t hear this without crying. She never left the hospital but at least she heard something beautiful while she was in this world.
Thank you. IZ Lives! Yes, I cry every time I see the video. I personally do not believe in heaven as a concept. Though I would like to think that IZ & Judy are somewhere sharing a drink while talking about how special both versions were to them and the world.
I first heard this watching ER. It plays when Dr Mark Green died. Sad moment had me in tears.
Rest in peace my guy. This song brings back too many memories xx
Absolutely love his version. Give you a good feeling when listening to it.
Great Song! Rest In Peace Iz
Definitely top 5 songs ever written, and this is coming from a heavy metal fan!
Such a wonderful man,and so beloved of his people. He was so proud of his culture. Such a beautiful man and gorgeous soul. We lost him way too early.
For some reason this is the only song that makes me cry every time I hear it.Im 76 and have no idea why this so touches my soul. He sounds like an angel.
This song is amazing, one of my personal favorites, keep up the work you 2 👍love your content
Beautiful 🎵 song.sweet soul and a voice to match.RIP Izzy.gr8 reaction. Thx for sharing ❤.
I miss IZ. And love this song. R.I.P Brother. You melted our hearts.
Sometimes you hear a version of a song that hits you a certain way...and you can't explain why or even understand where those feelings are coming from. this version does that to me.
when I was a preschool teacher, we played this song for the kids all the time... it has a wonderful calming effect, (on kids AND adults)
What an incredible voice and he was obviously very loved and died very rich in love. RIP IZ🙏❤️
❤️ ❤️ He was a treasure…that’s what love looks and sounds like.
On this Veterans Day, For all who are serving and have served in our military, Thank You for your service!
I enjoy all genres of music & classic hard rock is my sweet spot, but this is my favorite cover of any song, from any genre out there & never fails to get my cheeks wet.
I cry every time I hear brother IZ music this song included because it's so beautiful and adds more debt to the song and meaning
I got to see him in concert in 11th grade. He came out and met the audience and I remember thinking what an awesome sweet guy. He died the following year. When my parents told me he had died i broke down crying.
They played this song at my grandsons funeral. He was only 20 days old....
My dad is Hawaiian Chinese. He was born and raised in Hawaii. Bruddah Iz was a huge part of growing up for me. ❤ He was truly loved.
R.I.P I. Such a beautiful rendition of Over The Rainbow. A gentle giant deeply loved and respected.
He kind of is a hero of mine. One of the biggest people on earth playing one of the smallest string instruments and singing like an angel....
One of my favorite renditions of any song... ever. Rip
wow.. i never knew a man could have such a soothing voice, amazing talent.
This song always makes me cry, as I first heard it when Dr.Greene died on the TV show ER, and then learning about IZ and him being dead makes the song even sadder for me.
A wonderful tribute to a beautiful soul rest in peace my brother
I pray he is up there in his greatest dream ever.
This version of this song is fantastic. So gentle and soothing.
The only other artist, and I'm not too sure if you have covered her version of Somewhere over the Rainbow already, is Eva Cassidy.
Her version is heartbreaking too. 💔 So sad to hear artists with such great potential who are gone.
His voice touches my heart.
Just so beautiful! What a wonderful sendoff. Rest well Israel. Thank you for this.
The first time I heard this was when a main character of a TV show died. As it played, the camera did a slow drift around his house & family. Definitely a song to evoke some emotions.
The American Film Institute ranked this the number one movie song of all time. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole gave us the definitive version of it.
His voice is beautiful it makes me tear up all the time RIP brother iz
He called the the studio manager and very politely asked him if he could come to the studio to record this and did it in one take in 15 minutes.
this song is so awesome, it has been featured in many movies including 'Meet Joe Black' and '50 First Date'.
The instrument he is playing is called a ukulele. It has four strings and was developed in Hawaii in the 1880s from some similar Portuguese instruments.
Its popularity has had a big resurgence since the 1990s thanks in part to "IZ" and this medley.
I discovered who IZ was on a trip to Hawaii, Iz was a national treasure in Hawaii and when he died (which his funeral is shown in the video) it was a hugh loss and a national loss...RIP IZ.
This song was first made popular by Judy Garland in the Movie "The Wizard of OZ"
It is a very important movie to the whole genre and to films. I would suggest watching it.
R.I.P. IZ love this song thank yall for reacting to this
Voice of an angel, rest in piece IZ.
Fair winds and following seas Iz, RIP Brother
You only have to watch the ending to see how much IZ was loved.. Says it all really..
Judy Garland sang this in the classic The Wizard of Oz 1939. He’s playing a ukulele. RIP. He was an icon for islanders and everyone!
people keep saying 'original' and 'this rendition' like this is a single song, but its a MASHUP of somewhere over the rainbow and what a wonderful world. 2 songs!
His voice could reach into one's soul. Amazing, just amazing. Maybe, just maybe, gifted and blessed ❤️🌺👍🐛🦋❤️✝️🙏🌈😄☹️. Means a lot to me as a Hawaiian. To see others mourn one of our gifted legends. Mahalo and Aloha for for honor and respect 🌺
His light shone bright for such a short time and we are left bereft.
His song Somewhere over the rainbow/it's a wonderful world 8s even better!!!!!! Peace, the world is a better place because of songs like this!!! I'm greatful....
Ah m,an, doesnt matter how many times I see this, the funeral footage makes me cry every damn time.
