- Welcome to The Jonny Smith Late Brake Show episode of Top Gear's Chris Harris life of cars part 2. Top Gear is the most famous car show, and Chris Harris is the small chap with no shortage of driving talent, who brings the wheelman element to the TV trio.
In something of a Late Brake Show exclusive Jonny takes his awful brown easy chairs down to Bristol to chat about Chris' life in and around cars, from work experience at Autocar, to the heady Top Gear madness of today. In this two-part Idol Chat, Harris, typically very guarded about his personal cars and private life, shows Jonny some of his charismatic automotive possessions and opens up about what his career journey has been like; What it's like to drift fast cars, throw eggs at Matt LeBlanc in a 2CV, break into UA-cam world, crash a bit, race a bit, receive random phone calls from Chris Evans, get trolled and let a puppy eat his Porsche 911 GT3.

@@Mexxx65 Only because some countries breed them for food, however most people who have a dog consider them a family member, I guess it would be the same for most pets, having a dog in your family for 10-20 yrs hits you just as much when they pass away as losing any family member, it did us losing our Husky.
@@will4may175 Family members are irreplaceable. Many low volume classic cars are irreplaceable. A dog is easily replaced.
Genuinely, best interview of a TV personality I’ve ever seen, real enjoyed it. Chris Harris has gone up 500% in my appreciation, what a nice bloke.

Used to have access a W and an X reg 1.6 zetec company cars...fantastic machines and even had 1 floating through a flooded road and still carried on with a 200 mile trip

I love how up-front Chris is about what's more important in life and life isn't just all about one specific material thing. Too many of us get caught up in it. He understands it. He doesn't seem totally out-of-touch as a lot of celebrities or people on T.V. are. He's just a fan of life and cars.

Who else here agrees that when Jonny sits down with Chris again, he should ask him about his Motor racing passion? Motor racing "career"? His Endurance GT racing? His Historic Motor racing ventures? Hillclimb Motor racing? What interesting cars and stories he has had with cars he has driven up the famous Goodwood Hillclimb?
I've not come across any youtube interviews where Chris gets asked about this.
Chris harris such a good presenter very under appreciated out of the current presenter on top gear miles better than the other.

Honestly always thought no one can convey how a car feels to drive in writing or video quite as good as Chris. The fact he comes across as such a genuine bloke who happens to have a spot on view on life helps immensely!

This is why it pisses me off when hearing about him receiving vile IM's. People just want funny and pissing around. When I see Chris talk about cars I am just in awe of his passion , its admirable coming from a very genuine bloke. He is the best thing to happen to top gear, and thats a fact! Yes old top gear was great at the peak, but it was slowly going down hill. Chris has revitalised it. i genuinely love the bloke and i could sit and listen to him go on about cars all day long. His podcast is brilliant for it.
@@GoodJobLittleBuddy I would watch a video review of Chris Harris driving a bloody shopping trolley around the local supermarket as long as he brought along his usual pizzaz as to why this was the shopping trolley that we all need to drive....even just once!!!! Social media has become the birthplace of a load of keyboard warriors who have become used to saying things hidden behind firewalls that would get them a smack in the chops if they said it face to face!

This was absolutely fascinating. My earliest memory of Chris was when he wrote a column explaining he'd traded in his £35k 911 as a dipper on an RS 4.0 and the finance was £3k a month!

This absolutely nailed it.
Mr Harris for a long time has been my favourite motoring journalist and this has reaffirmed that position.
A very pleasant insight into the Top Gear situation (mentioned in part 1) and a fascinating look at Chris’s mentality towards what is rightly called an affliction for cars. All too relatable.

My only frustration with these two videos is the editing going back & forth and reminding me that I'm missing things that Chris said. He's a real car geek, and I love how his face and body show that. His look at 5:09 is priceless and gives me such a large smile.

Thoroughly enjoyed that two parter, providing a great insight into Chris. He’s clearly a dedicated and serious guy who dumbs it down for TG. I know it’s an entertainment programme first and foremost but clearly a shame that he’s not given more time for serious automotive journalism on the platform.
That's why there's UA-cam. Watch his old films if you're not familiar with it, it's insane how good of a story each and every video of Chris' is for car geeks. Norbert Singer and the 962 drive is an excellent example of this.
His stuff on CHOC and Pistonheads was excellent.

I can remember watching one of Chris' videos maybe 18 months before Jeremy's ego finally cost him, and thinking "If one of those idiots decides to pack it in and leave TG, Chris Harris would be an ideal replacement." I'm sure I wasn't the only one that had that thought. I think Chris' ability to drive fast cars quickly while commentating on them is better than any of the previous 3 TG presenters. and he seems like an awfully nice gent overall.

Lovely chat. When I was (still) poor with an ordinary job and an ordinary car, I was treated to a drifting course where I met Chris. He asked everyone what their favorite cars had been and after listening to everyone going on about their Porches and RS6s and so on, he got to me, and the best I could offer was the 205XS I'd used to own and really enjoyed. His very enthusiastic reply made my day. What a nice bloke.
One day we'll all come back to this 10 years from now and think "damm, what a brilliant film" ❤️

Absolutely loved it! great respect to Chris, I loved his articles in EVO and his videos were a real revelation at that time. I was shocked by the amount of hate he gets... it's just nuts. Amazing and hugely talented guy! A real example of persuing the dream.... THANKS!
I must be missing something. There are people who hate Chris Harris? Is it just because he's not Hammond, Clarkson, or May? Because I find that he is TG's saving grace.
I think the hate is aimed more at the format and how the producers had him interact with the other pair on camera. To me it seemed like he was trying to put on a persona. At least compared to other things I've watched him present.
@@gtametro Interesting. Thank you for attempting to clear that up. I think, due to Chris's personality (i.e. not as bombastic as the other 2 presenters) leads him to take a back seat unless it's time to thrash a car around a track. I wish he would take more of a Jeremy Clarkson role (i.e. head presenter) but it seems Paddy has taken on that role, more or less. Either way, I think Chris saves the show. His knowledge, and ability are keeping the show afloat, imho.
I think the hate Chris was referring to was during the Chris Evans days when they had a whole mish mash of presenters inc. Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz etc.............
@@FazermanD That was only 1 season, and was dealt with very quickly. Frankly that season deserves all the hate it gets. It's awful. The Leblanc seasons were only just marginally better, but was helped along by Harris, dramatically. Chris (Harris) has been holding the show together for some time. There's a good reason he's the only one still around from those days.

I've been a fan of Harris for years through all the drive and choc, and so on and I cannot think of another motoring journalist I'd rather sit down and have a beer and a chat with. Pretty sure I could blather on endlessly with him about cars, especially old BMWs.

Such a great piece. Chris's comment about UA-cam reviewers only saying positive things about the cars (and other stuff) that they review is 100% spot on. If you only say good things, it's a sales pitch!
I have to admit I love Chris to bits, he's just the most lovely and down to earth person in motoring journalism. So on the ball while also feeling like your mate in the know, he's an absolute hero, he really is.
This is one of the best things i've watched in a long time. Chris is an absolute hero of mine! Johnny is smashing it too, i remember the days of sideburns on fifth gear when i was little!!
Fantastic interview Jonny, I could genuinely watch this every day, two car guys just having a chat and sharing their passion. Such a breath of fresh air in a world saturated by power figures and social media likes.

I had no idea who Chris was, don't have a telly, no idea. What a fascinating man. Private, modest, got a bit of an edge to him, and really interesting. Well interviewed as well, you didn't get in the way of him, it was clear you were talking to someone you liked and respected and you both seemed to have fun. wow, Chris's answer about the under 2 grand car sparkled some memories, I did have a 3-door first gen 1.8 Focus and a 1.6 Focus Estate I absolutely loved both of them!
After a youth of eating, drinking, sleeping cars, I've not paid any attention for YEARS. The YT algorithm has driven (heh, pun!) me back into it, via HubNut and Smith & Sniff (love that podcast!). I'd never heard of Chris Harris before, but I've just watched an hour of really intimate chatter - the human element of motoring love - and I've now got another YT rabbithole to feed me for months or maybe years.
