Can we all just take a minute and appreciate how fucking good Jay looks at 50. The guy is the god damn pinnacle of health and fitness and looks amazing.
I do like alternating grips for different focuses on the lats, but as far as getting the cobra back, pull-ups, t-bar rows, and some seated rows, single arm rows(super set), dumbbell pull overs.
Man I’ve completely abandoned lat pull downs once and for all. I’ve given them so many chances- all grips, angles, going controlled with light weight, heavy and swinging. They’re just garbage.
Dumbbell pullovers is the worlds most UNDERRATED exercise. I do on push days, but it definitely develops the lats as well, and also really hits your triceps- you are gonna grow your triceps much more with heavy DB pullovers than 20 minutes of tricep cable push downs.
how do you work it in your split then if you do push day then back the next? if your getting a really good stimulus on push day for lats do you just not train lats the next day?
@@calithebully9925well the way I look at it- everyday is ‘back day’ in 1 way or another: I do push, pull, legs Chest- back gets worked a ton picking up heavy dumbbells for dumbbell pressing, and lats if I do dumbbell pullovers Legs- squatting and barbell lunges, tons of back Pull day- obviously back. And if you’re doing mostly free weight compound lifts, you’re using so many muscle groups there’s gonna be overlap. I just try my best to go off feel, so maybe if my lower back is fried with pull day coming up, focus more on pull ups, chest supported rows, etc.
Dumbbell pullovers are not a lat exercise at all. Your lats have very little leverage to extend the shoulder with the elbows overhead, which is where the tension is, so the fibers are not active. Your nervous system will recruit fibers from the chest to perform the movement because they have far more leverage where the load is applied
Pull-downs can certainly grow lats. Yeah, pull-ups might be better but the pull-downs are not useless. Besides, it’s what works for You. Even Dorian Yates can’t speak for everybody.
@@blacjackdaniels200my lats burn wayyyyy more after a set of cable lat pulldown then after pull ups. And I have this Quasimodo ish back on the top Wich is probably is part of the reason. So it really is different for different bodies.
I think Dorian is just so big and so strong that warming up to those pullups and performing them to absolute failure to grow his back would just be a chore and could mangle his tendons. Which is why him and so many other heavyweight athletes skip on them.
Lat pulldown is really good , you won't get injured by doing lat pulldown , most of the people can't do pull ups for sets and one arm dumbbell raw if not done correctly you may develop hernia
Pullovers, in particular, help build that wide look by developing the anterior serratus, which actually rests underneath the lats. In that position, the serratus has to work hard to hold onto the scapula as the lats flex and extend. It's definitely a fantastic lift.
Great thing here is that he mirrors what another great would say; Dorian. 3 functions of lats being vertical pull, horiztonal pull and pullover movement. Good advice all around. Dorian’s similar advice from his recent course he created FYI.
I wish I could feel what it’s like to be as big as he was in his prime, just for a day.. I once saw a guy that was like 6’5” maybe, so quite tall.. any way, he was definitely a body builder and he was massive. But he still wasn’t anywhere near the size of Jay.. it blew my mind how muscular this guy was. Seeing it in person is so much crazier than in videos. Most of us have never seen anyone as muscular as Jay in real life, these guys are 1 in a million.
crazy how the #1 Mr. Olympia is just dropping knowledge on here for free, I bet he'd kill to have the same information that's at our finger tips in his prime 👑 💯
He did have this info. He just got it from professional trainers and other body builders at the gym. None of this is new info, the internet just makes it more widely available.
Noticed pullovers give me a better pump. Feel reverse flies mostly in my arm, might swap out bent barbell row for dumbbell row. Gonna lean on my bench and try to isolate my arm. W shorts 🐸
Awesome content. Very interesting to see the pull up form, which isn't full Rom and clearly emphasizing the lengthened position. Pullovers are also great.
Side point. On that second one, the one armed side lift, Make sure that your palm is facing outward in front of you, instead of inward towards you, like you always see. This extra 90° will trigger more muscle activation.
You have hammered 12 repetitions in my head so much thatnow it even comes in my dreams. Earlier I was a 7 rep guy. Thanks a zillion my favourite guide and body building champion ❤
Sounds legit I’ve been in my beginning fitness journey of returning years and can definitely say the pull up overhand wide grip & the second exercise he did really targets the lats for me, Definitely need to try the pull overs!
How about all those exercises mixed into one exercise the close grip palms up pull down/chin up 🔥☝️💪in a close grip from a pullover, pulling yourself up from the pull up and bring your elbow near your hip from rowing, the simple chin ups do all of those❤ 🔥💪

I’ve eventually found a pullover machine at a gym near by and I’ve cancelled my membership at my other gym just because this gym has one of them. There rarely in gyms and they are the best machine for your last by a mile
March 2023, dumbell pullover, my humerus popped out and returned at his place after 1/2 seconds. Never doing this exercise again, my rotator cuff was injured and I lost gains, time, stability, strenght, and the serenity in training, I mean.. I enjoy training but I do not push always myself at full power out of fear

Love getting solid advice from a super experienced professional. Jay just wants to see everyone be their best.
Pullovers are one of the most underrated exercises for all fitness goals. Great for back and great for increasing shoulder mobility.
Pullovers are actually a pec exercise as thats where they have leverage and lat doesn't, think Im wrong? Look at the literature or any emg...
No
@@DarqEdits.why
@@loganrees8987 They highly engage chest, shoulders and triceps along with your lats. So you cannot truly call them a "Massive lats building exercise"

Completely agree, my back changed for the better when I started ditching lat pulldown in favor of pull ups and pullover.
