- MODELLING AN OVERGROWN PLATFORM ON MY OO GAUGE - PICCADILLY SIDINGS
Had a lot of fun with applying grasses, gravel and weeds onto the platform with the idea of making it totally unusable and unsafe for the lil plastic people.
In this video I:
- Add ballast, sleepers marks and weather the waste ground between the tracks.
- Apply varying colours and sizes of static grass
- Demonstrate how to make brambles using microfibre
- Demonstrate making buddleia using woodland scenices field grass.
- Quick update on the class 33
- Showing of the new extension, yes that’s right Piccadilly Sidings is officially BIGGER. I KNOW..

I also have an N gauge modern era layout based around MANCHESTER PICCADILLY IN UK. Take a look.

John, you've made that disused platform look terrific, capturing the appearance of years of neglect so well. That's a tribute to your practical skills - which I think many possess - but also to your powers of observation which I suspect are a much rarer commodity! Great to watch on a Sunday afternoon - thank you!
Ahhh. Thanks Trevor thats soo very kind of you. I agree ‘learning to see’ is something Im constantly talking about when I teach art, reproducing something as it actually is. Thank you for taking the time to comment
LOVELY EFFECT ON THE OLD STATION PLATFORM...THE TRACK AREA ALSO LOOKS VERY GOOD AND THE OVERALL LOOK IS SHOWING THE RUNDOWN AREA ON THE LAYOUT JUST RIGHT FOR ME ......THANKS JOHN FOR THE CLIP AGAIN
Thanks Paul glad you like it
As always, you provide a great lesson in attending to the little details which make your layouts stand out. The irony of beautiful work to make something look dilapidated always gets me, but at the same time, I like nature taking back. Good choice to switch to LEDs. Cheers.
Thanks Anthony, yes I know what you mean. I wanted to do the run down look as its something not seen very often, always a challenge. So glad I did the extra work on the 33
Superb work! It is a stunning effect, very well done indeed. I enjoyed watching. I don’t think I’ve seen a disused platform on a layout before, and this one sets the standard! 👍
Ahhh thank you, think you are right, Ive certainly not seen one on YT, at a show/ exhibition, possibly...
Piccadilly Sidings OO Gauge Model Railway I wonder if one of Chandwell’s platforms went out of service with, say, the demise of parcels when the Chandwell Catalogue Company went out of business in the 70s... 😂🤔
your detail on the disused platform and the sidings is amazing, looks perfect, top tip - use hoover to straighten static grass, that's very helpful, I'm using a shaker bottle when I do mine, that technique will help me immensely. thanks John, really enjoying the uploads for this layout.
Thank you Brian, Im so glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Hi John - That disused platform looks very good indeed and I love the effect of the field grass turned into buddleias....Cheers Kev
Thanks Kev
Another brilliant job John those wild flowers (weeds) look really good. However you'd have thought the rail company would have removed that old bridge and platform and it would have saved you lots of work 🤣 only joking it looks brilliant. The loco weathering looks great. Wow cracking extension John most people would love an extra 2 inches. Cheers Andy
Lol what are you like Andy??? Glad you like it...
yet again another superb scenic video... all the best Neil
Thanks Neil, glad you liked it
Been looking forward to this for awhile and it did not disappoint. For me it highlighted how good the existing ballast and track work was as well, so much better than I’ve ever achieved. Take care
Ahhh thats so kind of you. I suppose Id been putting it off for a while whilst I research what overgrown platforms actually look like, but its proved that always anything goes. There are some disused stations in a right ole mess. Thank you for taking the time to comment
Great Stuff John , Very Realistic Regards Dave
John this is just awesome..your modeling skills is above and beyond...you have the natural skills.and the eye for the details.....This layout needs a pro photographic guy to pop around..This is ideal to go into magazines.center spread i would say John..
Top man for the week..
Cheers Allan
Oh wow Allan thank you, that’s so very kind of you. I’m honestly doing what I think is right and how I imagine this to look, whilst having fun of course.
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 you should give your self a gold star John..10 out 10..a big green tick...absolutely top man on that layout
DRAGON JUNCTION MK2 ha ha ha, Ill have to stand up in assembly and explain to the school why I did it, Arrrrrrrgghhhhhhh lol
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 Seemed a good idea at the time...ha.ha.
as always john a very nice how-to video and as ever-fabulous results pleaser to watch take care all the best al 😁👍🙋♂️
Bless you Al, thx pleased you liked it
Great video! I'll definitely be coming back to this for reference when tackling some overgrown areas on my layout!
Ahhh thanks Simon that’s so kind of you. I’m glad you like it
Yet another great video. Very effective.
Great Job John with the dissued platform, it really looks very realistic. I agree with Allan from Dragon Junction, it is modelling at its best.
Cheers
Geoff
Bless you Geoff thank you
Hello John. Well, that certainly looks neglected. It could definitely stand in as a haunted platform come Halloween. I know you probably would prefer people not suggesting things, but.......the triangle piece right near the end of the crumbling platform, just inside of the 3 buffered tracks. I envisioned a dead, gnarled tree there. I know, that’s where the track was. A small gnarled sapling, perhaps. Okay, I said it. Great stuff, as always John. See ya next time.
Ha ha ha, thank you Norman I was wondering where that was going. If small gnarled saplings appears on the British rail network, even on forgotten preserved lines I certainly would jump at it.
Please do suggest things, I never said dont. That doesnt mean I will do every suggestion, because I do have to make it work in model form. Thanks again Norman
Another inspirational video!
I wish I had your skills John. Looks magic. 👍
Thank s Chris, thats very kind, I just copied others Tim from ‘The Scrapline’ is an amazing modeller one worth taking a look at
Hi John
Absolutely loving how 'The Sidings' is coming along - the disused platform is looking stunning - really love the detail you have got there.
I also love how you achieve such great results in your scenics without throwing barrowloads of cash at them.
great work & another beautiful video John!!
Cheers,
Derek.
Thank you Derek, very kind of you. Yes you are absolutely right, it is not necessary to spend a fortune on basic scenery.
John great looking platform, you did a great job, but don't knock the home made static grass tools they do the job & save money, but I use the 9volt verison....thanks for sharing....Jack 👍👍
Thank you Jack, I’ve had it for about 4-5 years now and it was good when I started but the difference from the branded ones is quite marked. Thanks for commenting
Good stuff John if you are looking for pics of disused current platforms look at polesworth station up platform
Thanks Steve this was very loosely based on Duddeston. I just did an internet search and there are quite a few lol.
Excellent video. Really like the detailing around the platform and the sidings. Looks so realistic
Does this mean you have socks you don't trust? But brilliant as always John.
Lol, definitely never trust your socks they run away, hide, get themselves into fights and turn up with holes. Then to top it all they eat all the cheese lol
Thank you Tony
Great work John, looks very very run down and nicely overgrown...smashed it again, cheers, Chris
Thank you Chris is its very very run down. The railway co told me no money lol
Brilliant scenics John, I love the whole style of the abandoned section of the platforms, right up my grubby street that, top stuff.
Alex
Lol, Thank you Alex Im so glad you like it, I dont think Ill ask about the grubby street, ha ha ha.
Great video John the end result is fantastic.
ive only just properly realized you have an unpainted wagon ??, looks like the 33 had ran the signal haha, not the best of start for the a new loco especially went you have already had to fix a paint issue on top of the lighting, i think you are are the only youtuber (model one) thats just gone not an issue i can fix the lights my self, so massive respect on your behalf on that.
Lol, sack the 33 driver thats what I say. When I asked him about that he said he wanted to stop near the camera so he could say ‘hello Mum’, some plastic people will do anything for bit of fame.
I have seen 1/2 other youtubers who’ve had issues with 33. One said his light didnt work at one end out of the box and others. You are right lights were easy to fix, as I said I switched mine for LEDs. Saw you vid of this loco, sorry didnt comment, a lovely spot. Bet you were thrilled?
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 haha its fine, yeah, they are amazing locos, it was 1 out of the 2 on that to be my first ever 33 i had seen so i was really excited, i don't blame them for wanting fame 😆 it must be great to get the attention haha
Hello John, I'm new to your channel, really don't know why I never found you before, might be I thought you only modeled in "n" gauge. Anyway what a brilliant bit of modeling, around this disused station. What fantastic attention to detail the vegetation on the old platform is great, you will be able to get some great photos. The whole area is so atmospheric, well done. I have now subscribed so will be looking back over some old videos and looking forward to seeing new, I think it was Alan from Dragon Junction who gave you a shout out so thank you Alan. Stay safe Eddy xx
Ahhh thank you Eddie some lovely kind words. I really appreciate that. Yes I suppose I do predominantly model in N gauge, as space is very limited, but really wanted to do something in OO gauge. So after discussions with others I decided to setup a new channel. Its only been around a month and whilst many existing subscribers followed me across it does take a while to get noticed by people. I really do appreciate the subscription bless you.
I got round to catching up an this is fantastic m8 really enjoyed it.
Bless you Tim, feeling better now? I just come in from chopping back parts of the garden lol
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 don't get me started lol im much better thanks, We want to get back into making videos but it be a week or so to get back into the swing of it lol catch you soon
Great video, and very informative. Please can you advise how you made your static grass device?
Hi Paul thank you sorry I can’t remember. I followed a video on YT. May I suggest you search for static grass applicator and few come up. Whether the fly swatter is still £4 I don’t know. Definitely cheaper than the £40+ for branded model
Loving this scene John. Can I ask about the sock over the vacuum cleaner for the static grass. Do you use it to save the static grass to reuse or is it necessary to make it stand up. I have been having dreadful problems making mine stand up so all advice is appreciated
Hi yes the sock is used to collect the ‘waste’ ready for re-use but equally does help to stand the grass to ‘attention’ so to speak. It’s possible the batteries are going flat in your applicator or that it’s not so powerful. I did make mine from a fly swat but the dedicated applicators you can buy are 3-4 times more powerful than mine. Hoping that’s helpful.
I am now posting videos for this layout on my main channel, ‘Piccadilly Model Railways’ link below, although I will monitor any activity.
ua-cam.com/channels/ygRpQ8YII92Mny-lQpG5oA.html
Oops, I seem to have missed this one! "Whatta mistaka to maka!"
Ha ha ha, hope you enjoy it. New video out on carriage lighting today. (Sunday 19th)
I've made my own static grass applicator. Same as yours but 9v battery and with an addition. I have put a pot on it. I cut a hole in the lid and hot glued it to the strainer. You can then put the grass in the pot and clip it to the handle and strainer.
Good idea, thank you for sharing
End of the over grown platform could do with some rubble bricks and concrete
We’ll see
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 some abandoned platforms that are over grown and have detoriation state have bits of concrete and rubble everywhere some fly tipping at the end of the sidings in the over grown area
I could Craig, yes, but I did a lot of research before hand and decided what I wanted then. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
