Its been a while but finally got round to sorting some of those niggling little jobs that just needed sorting, along with some new additions which make a big difference to the layout.
In this video I:
- Showcase new additions

Hi John
The layout looks fantastic and love the dmus.
The 3d printer will be very useful, I hope you'll keep us upto date with all the bits you make.
Look forward to the next video.
Regards Paul 👍
Hi Paul thx, yes 3D printer is saving me money no doubt and will pay for its self many times over I’m sure. If you watch my latest video which came out yesterday Sun 27th you can see few more 3D printed bits and bobs. I am still very much the novice and I’m sure in time will learn how prints can be improved
Hi John i have say the update was very enjoyable i love the 121 and the sound is fantastic, the 66 looks superb as do all the locos.I must say it was extremely kind of Rachel to donate the 108 you are a lucky guy all the best regards Marko.
Thank you Marko glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I am very blessed 108 fits beautifully into the layout. Strange thing is I was going to get one or very similar.
Thank you for all of your lovely videos i find them very watchable cheers 👍
Hi Paul, thank you. So glad you enjoy them. Please note future videos of this layout will be on my main channel, take a look. I’m building Manchester Piccadilly in N gauge too.

They look great John....thanks for sharing....Jack
Nice acquisitions, alterations, and add-ons. 3D printers are game changers for even a casual hobbyist. Always a joy to see your work. Cheers!
Thanks Anthony
This has evolved into a truly atmospheric layout John. You’ve absolutely nailed your original intention of creating that ‘run down’ look. Brilliant work. I’ve only been able to achieve a classic ‘run down’ look with my personal appearance! Lol. Keep up the great work.
Lol, Thank you Jason for your kind comments. I do go through how I achieved each part in the videos. Please feel free to take a look...
Looking great, good work
Hi John,
You are getting some nice suitable trains for the layout and with the work you are doing to them they are all looking good you must be very happy so well done as always keep safe and well.
Cheers Robert.
Thank you Robert yes everything is coming together beautifully. I’m loving the new 108, as you say fits in so well. Strange thing I was going to get a 108 or very similar.
Hi John, this is looking fantastic. Great scene and so realistic looking. Love the 108’s, especially in the BR green livery... Cheers, Chris
Bless you Chris thank you. Yes I feel very blessed with the green 108. So glad I put sound in the single unit (class 121) thx Chris
Morning John, what a great job you've done with the DMU it looks fantastic! What a lot of work you put in, the sidings looking great you must be delighted with the way things are going. Hope school is not to bad for you stay safe see you soon Eddy xx
Hi Eddie thanks for your kinds comments, yes I am please with how things are going. Despite what I said Im seeing things which still need doing lol.
Hi John, great video as always. Loving all the detailing and effort you've been putting in. Susannah
Bless you Susannah Im so glad you enjoyed it.
Just excellent! Regards Stephen.
Hi Stephen, mine is a Hattons 66, I’m pretty sure the lights mods that Peter has done are to his Bachmann fleet. I also think the other light version with smaller headlights works correctly on the Hattons 66.
The layout is looking terrific and in such a short space of time - wasn't it around Christmas you succumbed to the temptation of Double O and confessed your intention to build the layout. It's fabulous John and I've learnt so much from watching you deploying your skills for our education and delight! 😊
Thanks David, possibly around Xmas when I announced it, but it was around Sept when I actually decided to build. Thank you for your kind words
Sorry for your loss 😔 love your videos I've just started to get into model railway I've been into trains since I was a little lad probably because I watched a lot of Thomas the Tank Engine
Thank you Lewis glad you enjoy them Loss? Not sure what that could be...
Hi John, the Sidings are looking fantastic. I really like what you've done to the DMU with the buffer beam detail & weathering, I've been toying with the idea of doing this to my old Lima 117. The 108 is a lovely model, I've got the same in the BR Blue livery. You really do need to paint the figures inside though :) The Dapol Bubble car is also a stunner, even better with the wonderful soundchip ! Really like the new station signs, nice printing . All the best.....Andy
Thank you Andy yes I’m so glad I’ve done it. I’ll think about painting the figures and perhaps see how clear they are with the new lighting.
Hi John......The layout looks great. I like the printed couplings. They are ideal and specific for your layout.
Regards...... Steve 👍
Thanks Steve, much appreciated, yes I think the 3D printer open things which have been quite a difficult in the past. With the coupling I was able to custom make the exact size needed.
John you have a beautiful layout there and you make every addition just as great. I never fail to admire your achievements in such a small layout. Multum in Parvo!
Bless you Leslie thank you, so very kind of you to say. I’m very glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you too for the help in moderating Rachel’s chat. It was certainly a job with both of us were at full tilt lol
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 mmm Rachel's livestreams are becoming so popular now we have to keep on the ball. I don't suppose they issue teachers with canes any more, sometimes think mods need them?!
Lol, yes the streams are certainly manic, no we don’t use canes anymore in schools. Actually not for many years, lol
I like the close coupling John . Regards Fred
Thanks Fred, it works perfectly just right. Thanks for taking the time to comment
Great update John and great additions! On the front bare bit at the platform end you could have discarded speed signs on the floor and used cable reels or something
Great idea Chris, I forgot I got some of those...
Hi John.. great update..welcome to the world of 3D printing. you will love it.. I have the Creative Ender v1.0 3D printer.
Thanks John glad you enjoyed it. Yes I’m loving the printer so far, learning loads, It’s definitely not as easy as my EPSON lol. Keeps us on our toes
Simply Brilliant John..You made it look so busy .Superb work on updating the locos as well..
Pure enjoyment John.. ..........Allan....
Ahhhhh bless you thanks. I’m just watching yours now on FS. Loving it, music fits so well. Love seeing this loco, you should run it more often. Special charters going to Crewe then
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 Good idea ..i can change the names on the platforms..lol..
What a nice pressy! I could make couplers with my 3d printer too, if I had any NEM pockets! lol.Stop pinching my catch phrase "Heh presto!" 😂
Hi Tim, I just copied the NEM pocket ‘plug’ really easy in Tinkercad. Once Id made the ends the bar was so easy to adjust to get the close coupling. Im so pleased with it, runs like a dream. Definitely no issues with derailing
I know that this comment is a bit late but you have made good progress on the layout and the new additions are great.
Worry not, never late. Thank you I appreciate that
Great video John I’ve put a driver and fireman in my Peckett too
Thanks Sam, yes it makes such a difference with steamers as they tend to look but strange without. Still got the B2 peckett to do
Hi John Piccadilly Sidings looks amazing with the new rolling stock adding to the overall picture. You say this one is nearly finished, makes wonder whats going through the Warner think tank in the future.
Ha ha ha, hmmmmm time will tell, I said that about finishing and keep spotting things that need sorting. Lol
great 108 DMU John, nice weathering and detailing... Nice to see Sarah has been named... well done Sir...ATB Neil
Thank you Neil, so glad you enjoyed it. Incidentally what does ATB stand for?
Piccadilly Sidings OO Gauge Model Railway all the best John
Got you, thx
Hi John, the layout looks great, I love that DMU and that Bubble car, they will look great on my layout once I get to the point of buying more loco’s. Always enjoy watching your videos mate, cheers John, John
Lol, cheeky boy! Think they would look bit big on your layout they are OO gauge ha ha ha
lol! I know I’ll just have to see if I can get the wife to release some cash, I also want a Blue Pullman and a 12 pack of DCC Concepts point motors what do you think my chances are 🤔
Good luck - fair few hundred there
point motors first I think! Keep up the good work John 👍
Lets hope so ay lol
Just discovered your channel today and im so glad I did. Your layout looks stunning and your loco detailing is fantastic. Can I just ask, what brand are your viaducts and tunnel portals? They look really good. Thanks John.
Hi thanks for you kind words. The tunnel portal is 100% scratch built, and the viaduct started life as a metcalfe kit, that I won in a give away, and I didnt want to waste. But the bricks added one by one along with the finish. If you look for the video bricks, bricks & more bricks it goes through the build of both.
I also have an N gauge layout based around modern day Manchester Piccadilly take a look...
ua-cam.com/channels/ygRpQ8YII92Mny-lQpG5oA.html
Thanks John. Funnily enough, your scratch built viaduct vid came up at the end of this one so ive watched that too. 👍Your patience is remarkable but worth it as the end result is brilliant. It has given bucket fulls of life to the standard Metcalf kit! Fantastic work.
Regards John
Thank you John very kind and so pleased you found it helpful
Hello John, can you tell me the height of the text you used for your 00 layout and dud you use Gill Sans font?.
I really love everything you are doing and you are to be congratulated for your technical tutorials and your ability to convey the instructions in a clear and concise manner. Well done. Regards, Charlie
Think Ive answered on fb, pl advise if it wasnt yourself
Hi John - First off the layout is looking splendid and the rolling stock fir it very well. I like what you have done to the new 108 which is a great addition to have. I too am very happy with my Dapol Bubble cars as they run well and have nice lighting and i will soon be adding passengers and a driver.
The Dapol figures are good and did you prime them before you painted them ? and did you use acrylic paint ?
Keep well..........Cheers Kev
Hi Kev, bless you thats very kind. I didnt prime the dapol figures but it would be a good idea with white primer. Ill probably do that when I do the rest. Im very happy with them, yes its 3 lots of the same, but its easy to change each with colour or even adding parts/accessories. Forgot to say yes always acrylic as oils take at least 24 hours to dry and even then they are soft. Hope that helps
Great video and channel ! 😃👍 i subscribe now.
Thankyou much appreciated
Very nice video. I have been thinking of buying a 3D printer for a while now...Simon
Hi Simon, thank you. You should get the 3d printer, those couplings I made were created and printed within an hour, and modified to create the exact size. I couldn’t buy and get them that quick and youre restricted to the size available and no others. You would need to be fairly computer literate and able to use 3d programs like tinkercad and slicers like CURA, but Im so pleased with the end results. Yes there have been some disasters, it has to be said, but every print you learn that ,’you can do this, but not that.’ Step by step... there is a huge 3d printer community and someone will be able to help.
I love that Dapol 121 as well. I only run DC but it runs so smooth ...if a little slow. The lighting also works, but obviously being DC you can’t control it.
Is it easy enough to take apart? I’d like to add some passengers and a driver as well.
I had to file it a little as well, but it didn’t take much and it was easy. Was worth it for such a lovely model 😎
Hi Rob, thank you for taking the time to comment. Glad you like it, and yes they are gorgeous models. On the speed they wouldn’t have been very fast in reality so I think slow running is perfect. Yes they come apart very easy. I can unhook the body using my fingers now but 4 bits of scrap plastic or card body falls out. Remember the weight is in the chassis, so do onto a soft surface like folded up towel or alike
That is looking brilliant John.. Well done.. P.S. Who`s make of lamps are they ?...Also are the point levers operational or dummy ones?
Hi Martin, thank you for taking the time to comment. I got the lamps from eBay so not sure if the brand. I made the point levers from a dressmaker’s pin so they are dummy I’m afraid. I still need to fit point motors at some point in my life lol
Great video, would love to see some telegraph poles
Hi Lee, thank you for your kind words and great idea. I did think of telegraph poles but it would be very difficult to get the idea to work on the layout and be convincing.
hmm, ive been away from your channel for some time, seems weird, even if bell on youtube still wouldnt recommend your videos to me, im loving these DMUs you are getting they look fab, good to see the peckett carrying the bristol name :)
Thank you, may I suggest click ‘all’ on the bell options it MAY help
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 i already have that option on, its weird, gonna have to make sure to keep an eye out for when ones come out
I post something most weekends, although mainly from main PICCADILLY channel
Hi John
What decoder did you use for the class 121, and what modification did you do to wiring to get the interior lights to switch on and off?
Hi Raymond, I went to Youchoos told them what I wanted and they sent the appropriate decoder loaded with the sound file, so I’m not actually sure which one it is. Regarding the wiring mod if you go to the Youchoos website, down the left hand side see installation guides, look for 108 yes that’s correct ( trust me lol) in there you will see the dapol 121 comes up as part of the package. If you scroll down there is a clear pic showing which terminal on the DC lighting switch and the correct terminal on the PCB. It’s not difficult but I suppose fiddly. I would recommend a good soldering iron with a pointed tip. Hoping that helps
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 thanks for that I'll have a look.
Its looking great John. What paints do you use for painting the figures?
Hi Mark Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it. My local model shop sells Revell and Games Workshop paints. Hoping that’s helpful
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 Thanks will try that, just can't get my figures right.
What paints are you using? Maybe get some very good quality 0000 brushes and give the paints a good stir. Please forgive me you are using matt paints? ...and acrylics to save on time
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 was using acrylics but didn't seem to cover very well.
Some colours are naturally thin reds, oranges and yellows especially. I suggest prime the model if possible and apply couple 3 coats. Alternatively if it’s for people could you use thicker more dense the colours you have?
I'm pretty sure you can buy light strips for the 66 like peter dixon did thx for the video
Hi I think the lightings mods Peter did were to his Bachmann fleet. Mine is a Hattons 66 with the large lighting cluster. I think the small light version works correctly. Someone said ages ago it was a programming fault on my version.
I don't think the lighting in the motor coach needs to be changed as the coaches would date back to the filament bulbs which arnt as bright as modern Led lighting.
Thank you Andrew, its perhaps hard to see exactly how dim the lighting is. It certainly won’t ‘be modern’ lighting, as you say, but it does need to be seen.
Nice station, is it supposed to be slightly abandoned?
Hi yes, i call it a heritage line now, but they are struggling for money but they don’t want to close this station lol
Nice I haven't seen anything like it before you have a very creative mind
Bless you thanks, I do like to do something out of the ordinary
I have the Br Blue Grey version. Great model but crap interior lighting.
Hi Wayne I will upgrade the lighting soon
If you do upgrade the interior lighting in yours, I look forward to seeing it.
@@piccadillysidingsoogaugemo6445 Excellent!
I also have the new Bachmann 121. It really is excellent but is let down by it being very lightweight. It's looking like I'm going to have to save up and get a plux 22 sound chip in it now
Lol, yes Ive heard the new bachmann is very light but 121s would have generally run single car, so nothing to pull.
