Tejas MK2 or the Medium Weight Fighter is being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Defence Research and Development organisation (DRDO). It is going to be a single engine, 4.5 generation fighter aircraft. MWF will have many state of the art technologies integrated with it. It is going to be the mainstay of the IAF in future.

Sweden has claimed that the Gripen E fighter jet developed by SAAB with a focus on electronic warfare, has been designed to kill Russia's fearsome Sukhois.
𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝘁 ‘𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀’
Gripen first participated in Red Flag 2006 exercise in Alaska with the Gripen A. In a scenario with reduced AWACS and reduced ground support, the Gripens connected their link systems and got the battlefield awareness necessary to avoided all ground defence.
The score on the first day was10 kills including a Typhoon. During close air combat in Red Flag, one Gripen pilot knocked down five F-16 block 50+. The Gripen remained undetected and they suffered no ‘losses’.
Vis-à-vis the Gripen A, the E-series has a new and more powerful engine, improved range performance and the ability to carry greater payloads. It also has a new AESA-radar, InfraRed Search and Track system, highly advanced electronic warfare and communication systems together with superior situational awareness.
Stefan Englund, a former Swedish Air Force Flight Engineer is of opinion, “The only fighter that Gripen E should be compared with is the F-35. The planned GaN (gallium nitride) based EW-suite will probably make it a ghost.”

5th and 6th Gen would be required for aggressive missions deep inside the enemy territory. India does need these aircrafts but only in a limited numbers. If India could develop an autonomous LCA Tejas as an interceptor, that would be a game changer.

𝗠𝗠𝗥𝗖𝗔 𝟮.𝟬 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to select the best aircraft for the IAF from among the participants: SAAB Gripen NG, Lockheed Martin F-21, Boeing F/A-18, Boeing F-15EX, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Mikoyan MiG-35. The Sukhoi Su-35 could also take part. The winner would get to supply 114 fighter jets (~7 squadrons). This is expected to help the IAF move closer to the sanctioned fleet strength of 42 squadrons.
Now, instead of the earlier stated 200-odd single engine Tejas Mk-2s, it has been decided that just 170 Mk-2 MWFs (~10 squadrons) would suffice.
So, really speaking, the Tejas Mk-2 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗧 be a replacement for MMRCA - unless it is made in far larger quantities. Of course, the Tejas Mk-2 - cannot substitute a heavy fighter like the Boeing F-15EX.

The HAL Tejas is an Indian single-engine, fourth-generation, multirole light fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in collaboration with the Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s....
that is a very long time before induction...even if we say that the aircraft was first inducted in 2016
Indias 120 Jaguars has became under powered after heavy radar and avionics Darin 3 upgrade and almost 15-25 ℅ under powered engines.... And BAE has stopped manufacturing spare parts of Jaguar, 6 the Jaguar squadron is not operational as the aircraft has been caninabalised for spare parts.

IAF got 31 Jaguar airframes from France, 2 airframes, 8 engines and 3,500 lines of spares from Oman, and 2 twin-seat jets and 619 lines of rotables from the UK. While France and Oman have given them free, with India only bearing the shipping cost, the UK charged ₹ 2.8 crore.
But, with progressive upgrades of avionics and weapon systems, the fighters have become heavier and their Rolls-Royce Adour-811 engines have proved to be underpowered.
Unfortunately, the IAF's plan to replace the engines with more powerful ones didn’t work out.

This video is about the 𝗠𝗸-𝟮, a medium weight fighter, with a maximum take off weight of 17.5 tonnes - an improvement of over 85% in weapons and payload carrying capacity to that of Tejas, light combat aircraft (LCA).
Dimensions of the Tejas Mk-2 are: Length-14.65 m, Wingspan-8.5 m, Height 4.86 m, Empty weight-7000 kg, 13,500 kg, Max Take Off Weight-17,500 kg, Payload capacity- 6.5 tonnes, Engine wet thrust-98 kN. Corresponding figures for Mk-1 LCA are 13.2 m, 8.2 m, 4.4 m, 7040 kg 3.9 tonnes and 84 kN, respectively.
The Mk-2 will sport an active electronic scanned array (AESA) radar with an integral Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS) and Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS). It'll also have enhanced Network Centric Warfare capability with seamless integration with various offensive and defensive systems of the Indian Armed Forces. Weapons package will be the latest available at the time of production.
Timelines as per Mr. R. Madhavan, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL - the company that makes the Tejas fighter jets: “Tejas Mark-2 is likely to roll out by August-September of 2022. First high-speed trials will start in 2023 and we expect the production to start somewhere around 2025.”
𝓝𝓸𝓽𝓮: there are 3 fighter aircraft which bear the ‘Tejas’ moniker - Mk-1, Mk-1A and Mk-2. Only the Mk-1 is in production. Production of the Mk-1A LCA is expected to start some time in 2023. Production of the Mk-2 MWF will commence only after production of 73 Mk-1As have been completed.

The Tejas Mk-2 single-engine, multirole Medium Weight Fighter is a more potent version of the of indigenous Tejas Mk-1A LCA, featuring a more powerful GE F414 engine, greater load-carrying capability and next-generation electronic warfare system.

That will make it superior to the Tejas Mark-IA, 73 of which are being procured by the IAF under a ₹48,000-crore deal that was approved by the government on January 13.”
The Tejas Mk-1A will be equipped with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, beyond visual range (BVR) missiles, electronic warfare suite and air-to-air refuelling system.
𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆: The aforementioned deal also includes 10 Tejas trainer jets in Mk-1 (FOC) standard.
If you increase your order of 83 jets to 90 it will mean 5 more squadrons & changing the remaining order of 40 mk1 to mk1A will put us in a comfortable position on the completion of the above orders.

The Jaguar is in need of urgent replacement. The MWF is also envisaged as a replacement for the IAF's Mirage 2000s and MiG-29Bs.
@@le_ecrivaine considering the shortages of our squadron strength, I don't think it'll be prudent to retire 3 different types of fighter jets all in one go. The MiG 29 4th generation legacy jet has just been upgraded to MiG 29 UPG multirole standards. The Jaguar has been upgraded to Darin III standards and Mirage 2000 which is always the go-to jet for the IAF has been upgraded too. I think all these 3 jets would be with the IAF for atleast 10 more years or maybe even 15. Only by then would MWF would be coming in reasonably nos to replace all these jets. Today IAF has still not retired the MiG 21 Bison. Precisely the reason, quantity has its own strengths and advantages. We've got very capable adversaries in both our fronts. The MMRCA which was floated 15 years ago is still nowhere in the picture. 36 Rafale fighter jets can help in a regional conflict like what happened post balakot strike but IAF needs lot more than just 36 for a decisive Air dominance mandate. MWF is a single jet multirole fighter jet so it's best suited to replace Mirages. MiG 29 UPG is a medium weight twin engine fighter jet. The ORCA would have been a good replacement for MiG 29 but seems IAF is not interested. ORCA was to be modelled on the TEDBF. If you ask me the entire Tejas program is a big prototype program for future programs like MWF TEDBF and AMCA.
In its current avataar Tejas can be a good Air Patrolling Jet and basic interception but cannot be used in aerial dogfights or BVR combats. The Mk1a maybe slightly better but still it will be a direct replacement of the MiG 21 Bison and not any of the advanced jets. If MWF AMCA programs don't materialize quickly in less than a decade IAF is surely looking at a worsening situation than it finds currently and this is because zero future planning, years of neglect and ofcourse our pathetic bureaucracy wrangles and red tapism babugiri plus political interference. Let's hope things get only better from here.
