- Learning how to get your music heard without radio ties directly into your music marketing strategy. Once you understand basic music marketing you'll have a better understanding of how to promote your music online, but what about traditional radio? Some say that radio is dead while the numbers tell a slightly different story. In this video I discuss a common misconception about radio play that I've been getting a lot of questions about. If you're interested in starting a music career then I suggest watching this one.

Streaming is the now and the future. But yes, building a brand online is definitely right and its also good to build relationships in person as well.
Inspirmentalist 👌🏾
@4:02 Appreciate the shout out bro! And you were pretty spot on. How it happened was that I went to a beat battle, met a guy, he had dope beats. He was from Pontiac, Michigan. I'm from Detroit. We got cool. He's cool with a battle rapper named ill Will. ill Will is from Pontiac too, he knows Method Man. They did a song together but they didn't like the beat that they did it on. ill Will reached out to my buddy that I met at Beat Battles, my buddy came to me so we could put it together and the rest is history. That would have never happened if I had not went to those events. I never would have met my buddy Genius On The Beat if I would have stayed in the house. He's also not a very social media type person so I would have never met him on social media. So there's opportunities lurking around every corner. You just gotta go outside and put your best foot out there. Building relationships is EXTREMELY important in the music industry.
Thanks again for the shout out bro. It means a lot. #Salute
Chris Wellz you’re famous out here bro lol
@@BrandonRico lolol not yet. Adam Ivy the homie tho. 🤣💯🙌🏽
I want to see that college video and share it with everyone I know 💪🏽💯
Yess that will be great...
One of our songs ("Cabin in the Woods") was picked up and played a few times by a local station in Cincinnati. This was actually a big step for the Softstone Hearts brand, because even though we're still small, it seemed legitimize our music for the friends and fans that were already following and engaged in our music.
As far as radio being a 'magic key' that brings musical success - radio won't do that, and I totally agree with you. I would say that it's valuable in terms of the social proof that you're serious about music, as well as also being helpful in terms of marketing. (For example, we made a BIG DEAL out of our radio premiere across all our social channels. It gave us something to talk about and push. Again, a valuable tool and a great situation - but not a magic bullet and not an amazing way to recruit tons of new fans quickly.)
Cool
I woke up thinking about radio vs internet all day. And BAM! Adam posts about my dilemma. Thank you Adam!
Same!! Came right on time
I don't see why people won't like to hear about your personal life, that's what makes you real! Stay true Ponyboy!
we trying sodapop
I never listen to the radio! I listen to all my music on streaming services or even just playing UA-cam videos. Love your channel! Thanks for helping us as artists reach our potential!
Kelsey Barnard Music you have a good voice! Enjoyed some of your covers. 👌🏾
Campaigne oh wow thank you so much! You’re too kind! 💞
Kelsey Barnard Music indeed, thank you 🙏🏾 🙂
I love that your videos drop early in the morning as I’m having my coffee (Cali time) 💪🏽
Actually thanks to you Adam I just got 2 of my newest singles placed on a live radio show that starts in an hour this morning locally extremely excited it truly comes down to network and stepping out of your comfort zone the information you provide is absolutely priceless if you put it to work Thank You so much Adam
Probably some of the best information I’ve found in years and years of trying to get out there! I held myself back because I was always trying to use what everybody else was using.... studio equip, guitars, microphones, etc. When I should’ve been just using what I have! That’s it’s! Thank you
Hey man, I’m new to your channel but I love it and your content! Thank you for helping everyone who is willing to work for their dreams!
"use what you have until what you have pays for what you want" is great advice!
Bro said "Fuck off if you Unsubscribe" LMAO!! Yo, we're with you 100%, Adam! The reason WHY this brother "takes a little long" (which it is NOT long!) is because he's honest and passionate bout what he's saying... and he gives a shit! I've been in the game professionally for YEARS.... and STILL learning new things everyday! I'm just glad you're being VERY consistent bro!! Salute & Support!
Advertise it on Facebook, on UA-cam Ad, etc., it'll cost money but better than a slow process.
Hi Adam, I have stumbled accross your vids. Thank you for being Authentic and real. Appreciate that.
I'm glad you made this video Adam. Me personally have been on a couple local radio stations for interviews and music but it Honestly didnt effect my music career. Me promoting it to my fans via Facebook and UA-cam was the only way I got people to tune into the radio show. Plus they have been the most popular platforms for me. I can get my brand across simple and easy without spamming people along with connecting with fans.
I have had my music played on local radio. Multiple songs on multiple stations, over multiple years. I can't say it has made a big difference.
Hey I just watched one of the videos about music marketing! Thank you for all of your advice and being real for real artists that deserve to be heard even though they are not well known yet!
Great stuff as always Adam! I'm about to use radio station to see how impactful can be to position your brand. I've been uploading everyweekday since 2 weeks now and while I haven't had a significant growth, it feels good to have a constant upload flow, it really feels like the seed metaphor you mentioned. Thanks for all your advice! :)
love it!! thanks for the quick video!
I had no idea you were from WI bro. It's calming because as a young adolescent who thinks they have no chance of making it in the industry as a singer, songwriter, and dancer reignite hope and inspiration to keep going. Thank you Adam. 💜
I really love your rant style at the same time your inspiring advices 💪
Alright I’m going to binge watch all of your videos Adam, you’re my teacher mr UA-cam god
Always use what you got!
Love these videos
College video would be really relevant, I'm studying music performance in London, hearing what your opinion would be on the subject would be cool. Also the side stories make it easier to communicate your point so keep them coming!
Love your videos. Getting music out there has no rules anymore. Do whatever works for you. But social media and streaming as well as traditional media all work.
Lol don’t let them take you down Adam! We are here!
Adam, you are correct. 90% of radio in the U.S. is corporately owned and have mandates that prevent their program directors from playing independent artists/music. Even if you are able to get your music on secondary market radio (locally owned, smaller market), those markets aren't big enough to support growing artists and most times you end up getting dubbed a "Local Artist" which is the kiss of death for any artist. Radio is not necessary to build a successful career. The problem is most artists don't want to be successful, they want to be famous, therefore they focus so hard on getting on the radio, spend useless money hiring indie radio promoters that can't get them on the radio stations that matter, the mediabse/billboard monitored published panels. It really comes down to deciding if you want to be successful or famous. Once you decide to be successful, your eyes will open to the opportunities that are actually available to grow your career and develop an engaged fanbase.
...definitely useful info....appreciated....u r SO right !!
I need to cop a bright yellow hoodie TBH.
you r saying exactly what i need to hear
Great advice!

Fuxxin wit the energy, my Guy! Radio, albums, Condore monitors... What do they have in common? 🕵🏿♂️👍🏿
Excellent video as always Adam
Thank you! :-)
And asS usual you are bang on the money!
We use webradio shows that specialises in our genre of music, they may have a small listener base but they are way more likely to be into your stuff!
Also through things like Facebook we have made contacts with some club djs over in America who DJ to the kind of crowd into our stuff and we are going to be played to packed dance floors in Chicago and st Louis so fingers crossed they like us :-)
We were on local radio here and other than the odd Facebook like we got very little out of it!
Oh and one last thing...
FUCK the haters, we LOVE your stories keep em coming :-)
you have so much knowledge on networking
adam, even if you made a vid that was 3 hrs long. I'd still watch it!
Much Love 🙏
Shout out from Dubai ! This is inspiring !!
Hit me with the wisdom, sensei 🎶
Please do that college video, I would really appreciate hearing your honest opinion on this topic🙏🏽🔥
would love to hear that video about various music colleges!
Interesting that I was talking about using what you have on IG today.
Online streaming is the new radio! My music gets heard on all sorts of music platforms, as well as local radio. But the most amount of people hearing it is online for obvious reasons. I hope new artists will not sweat it if their music isn't heard on the radio.
Your stores are great bro. They ain't channel fam. Love the advice. We've have our music played on the radio. It definitely helps but our biggest help was when we started streaming on Spotify and a few others. Just want to say Thank you from all of us.

#FalloutOfFear
Here's the thing. I live in Serbia, which is currently under a repressive government, which purges pretty much everyone that thinks and speaks differently. I had a lot of air time (since Im a pop singer/songwriter mostly) on all radio stations until 2014, when they overtook all the media etc, and since then I cant even get a play on a small local radio station. Im constantly promoting my music, doing ads and loosing money to facebook, instagram and google, and idk what to do anymore tbh.. Im in touch with a bunch major pop artists here, and some of them are fans of my music, and they constantly tell me that if someone else sang my songs - they would be popular af.. which is probably true, because I produced a bunch of number hits for major pop artists, and stars in the making.
Now, my music is not dumbed down, you have to have a working brain to understand it, but the internet promotion is just not the way on the Balkans, as it seems.
lol hey I literally grew up with Chris Wellz
Adam, I sent you a SoundCloud track and shoutout with one hour dedication!
#focus
Funny thing is I'm hearing higher industry artists say the radio is important. But like you I think its a new way that is unfolding here. America has too many humans. That truth alone is an important reason for this digital market. To open opportunities. Here in LA, the income is tight. So you gotta figure out how to work around the skeptical. Because it really is a new way. Adam Ivy, as always #1 :)
Hi Adam! Thanks for a great video. I have one question. I followed your advice on contacting music supervisors via Linkedin, but found out, that they often look directly into some music libraries or work specifically with companies that choose artists with whom they want to work with. Do you have some advice on how to approach these and which are the most useful ones for independent artists? Do you have some favourite music libraries where you put your music?
Thanks again for great content, greetings from Czech Republic!
This is great truth..
Please do a video on colleges lol. Love the material/info you bring 💯
Have a nice dinner bro🙌💯
For me most recently Instagram has been the best although I have had some radio play. I find hitting up pages that promote good music contacting them either on FB or Insta helps a lot when they repost your music. Also radio stations that live stream on FB helps a lot too FM stations just arent listened to in the same way as before I used to be a radio DJ host that was back in 2009
Thanks again family. 🍀
#AdamIvy Where are you in Florida man that's Awesome! Were from Miami Florida.
thank you
Thank you
Good q and a
Do a video on colleges please. Really appreciate these tips. Also f*ck the people that are saying you need to do short videos and not tell stories about yourself. Your content is you and I appreciate that.
Why is every video fire
Yo Adam, I work at the very first Commercial Music dept. in the country - South Plains College in Levelland, TX. I wanna see a vid on colleges AND get you out here!
i went to south plains college
what do you do now for work
🔵 I am truly glad that you are getting a lot more views and subs because you are AWESOME 👍👍👍 #SeriousMusiciansUnited
What are your thoughts on, sirius xm, and iheart radio? interested in knowing if those avenues are beneficial for new artists
ADAM!! Random question.... what software do you use to edit your videos?
No way u forgot about that dinner lol u had that written down in ur calendar book a month ago ❌🧢😂
I definitely wanna see the college video
PLEASE do the colleges that encourage music business and what colleges teach you about music business.
I could listen to you for longer 🤗
What are your opinions about Berklee College of Music?
please do the video on music colleges. i appreciate videos that come from some like Berklee
My band has played on college radio in our hometown (Columbia, SC) to little avail. We are working more on internet platforms now because after 2 years of hosting open mics and playing local shows, I've become a LOCAL YOKEL.
That, btw, is the highest office you may hold in the local music scene.
If you are content with "local yokel," by all means, own it.
If not, log the f*** online, and DON'T STOP POSTING.
I’ve gotten traction from every platform differently. UA-cam has gotten me fans from Washington, SoundCloud everywhere...ect maintaining traction is the rough part, one day week my insta can have 800 profile visits and another week it can be 350
I was obviously underrating streaming services since I listen to music mostly on youtube, or on downloaded albums from varios artists...Is it really that lucrative that musicians get most money through streaming?
Online radios maybe worth checking
First, keep it personal. I and many of us with the "drive" prefer it. Just the way it is. Second, yes, please do a vid on which - or the how to submit to - college stations vid, as you suggested. I'm originally from the Cedar Falls, Iowa area. I have Wisconsin family too. Just letting you know that a fellow Midwest fella is following as many of us do, and wanting to make the most of your time.
EDIT:
I am also working on tracks to specifically target the local DFW area radio rock station, which plays local music for an hour every Sunday night from 11pm to Midnight. Can you recommend similar station programming if you know of such, which people can submit to for a bit more validation in terms of getting a local following?
Do a vid on college please . Specifically full sail in orlando and sae institute in miami
Hi Adam we live in the UK. 🇬🇧 Our daughter has been told she cannot do music 🎧🎵🎶 because her Art 🎨🖌️Course is too full on. I believe strongly that Education 🎓📒📕 needs to bend and be more flexible (BESPOKE ). She has had to give up her Cello and Guitar 🎸private lessons. The thing is our Melody is a Artist/Singer/ Musician/Songwriter and Storyteller.
She is capable of creating a beautiful film with her musical crafts and character design. Education frustrates me so much in the UK. They need to allow our children to be free and express themselves in life in a way that makes them happy. Too many British Elite Brick Walls are destroying young people's dreams.
What are your thoughts on this? 😊♥️
Is it ok to send unreleased music to college radio?
Do you think it's better to call a college radio station rather than email them? Would it be too much of you did both?
It's worth a shot, really depends on how they are set up internally and they size. Sometime they will be open to a call sometimes you can't get in touch with more than just a voicemail box which is full.
How can you get subscribers if you are a loner(like me)? I believe I make good music but no one supports me (not even parents).
Radio? Does it still exist outside of exhibits at museums? I don't know that I've ever even heard people talk about it let alone listen to it, since the 90's.
Indigestion 3 times in a row 😜🤪🤪🤪
#indigestion
Definitely would like to see a college video
Ny college radio station video!
PLEASE stop listening to the idiots , your allowed to make videos as long you want , your right when you say your channel family cares , we will stick around for the long ones, thanks brother
I love how you speak so fast that I start thinking if you snort a pound of coke before your videos 😂😂
Please do the collage video
No bro we love the long ones
Wow I didn’t know that some ppl didn’t realize the radio is slowly dying
Do the collage vid please
i want people to hear my music...i share to groups have friends and fans share my music i know my music is good and i have no problem investing in my craft and ive watched over a 100 marketing videos and tried many ways..i think paying for a promoted or sponsored post doesnt look good to fans it makes them think "wow" he needs to pay for this to be seen and collect views? well now its uncool" ive been on the radio which is fine but from a few fan call ins or even me caling in to request...ive tried owning just 2 platforms like you suggested just nothing breaking the scene i believe i need professional help or someway to get the right person or influencer to hear can you please give me advice?
Internet killed the video star!
