I can’t stress enough how important promotion is. I don’t get how people just drop content and they expect people to care. You need to document, plan, and build hype. It goes so much deeper than that of course, but in my experience, that’s like 50% of the battle.

Man, thanks so much for these videos. I've been in a bit of a rut the past several months. I released my debut single over the summer and I'm just now releasing my second. There was a huge hiccup because of depression, punches that life throws at you, and constant self-comparison. I'm a dude that totally amplifies any bad thing that happens to me, so I let it get the best of me. It's something I'm working on, and I'm still not in a great place. BUT, having this new single come out soon, and watching your videos has totally motivated me. It took literally every ounce of me to actually admit the fact that I wanted to pursue an endeavor in the music world, and little did I know how easily I could tear myself apart on the inside so easily. So thank you.
You are very convicing. Truth is, the biggest point there is you have to be patient. IF you love what you do, you dont have to care about views and streams, you just do it for sake of loving it. If You love music and You're patient, it's just matter of time. but don't do it just to MAKE IT. Either way - you have to put yourslef out there!
I kinda don't get you too. 'The breakthrough doesn't have to happen regardless your patience or time passing.' That is why if you want to do this full time or live from that you gotta make it - hence the focus just to make it. Otherwise you can stay in the basement doing several gigs a year. Nothing wrong with that. But you have to be really clear about what you want.

Definitely on point and yes! Success is earned. I was definitely the person you say in the video... I was doing most of the work, but holding off my 'best' to release when I had momentum. A year later some is dated, it doesn't accurately represent me currently... but I hit the road touring and performing for a year, across the USA and Australia. No Manager, no label, just hard work, trying to 'make it'. Truth? The delay gave me time on the road to really think about why I am doing this. What I want, what I want to represent, and how I want to share it. Don't rush without making strategic REAL decisions... but don't delay your dreams, to wait on a pipedream. If you want to release material you have sat on - do it! But first, figure out a marketing and release strategy around it, and release over a couple months or year. Figure out your goals, and work backward seeing the steps and milestones you need to reach to get it, using your release, videos, tours, everything as a means to grow your fanbase strategically, while becoming better at everything you do each time. From playing and writing, to marketing and running your business, accept you will suck, but get better everytime Also, Rarely is anyone willing to back and help someone, if they aren't willing to put in the work to help themselves... never forget that if someone else makes your career, they may own you and your career, or at least entailed to the majority of your income, because it wouldn't exist without their work. I know indie artists that manage their own business careers and play bars, that make more than friends who have a record deal and play arenas but make way less with more limits on decisions.
I love looking over you're older videos as there is always a hidden gem in there. You're videos really help with the bigger questions regarding music marketing.
I got some advice for the DJ/producers here: I am in the bussines for quite a while now. If you're a good producer and you got let say a track which you are very confident about and you want to release it within 2 months. What you need to do is send it to bigger DJ's you know that could possibibly play your tracks. If so, make sure you get footage of them playing it at events and put out this footage on your socials to create some hype. Then make sure you release that track within that 2 month promotion period. If you even want more plays you should try to see if you can get signed on the label of your favourite Dj/producer. You got in contact with them in ths first place and they play your music and maybe they can get you in the label this way, (its always better to get in a label by another DJ then sending promo's to the label mailbox.) You can talk to the label managers if they could get you in some nice playlists of some upcoming festivals (those warm up playlists that need to get people in the mood for the event) by this way I increased the stream amount from 3k to 24k in a week :)
This is straight facts, manifest and put in the work to ease the process. It just takes hard work but think about it most people don’t even put in the work and learn to do it right
Nice video Adam! When you already have the music, the promo material the videos and so on, you have everything to start the publicity to build awareness. You then need a Public relation agent or become this PR, who can sell your project better than you! Send your EPK to music blogs, mag, fanzine, DJs, local radio stations etc Get people to know your project and if they will like it, they will talk bout it, they absolutely need new/good content to talk about, that's the trade. This is how everything starts :) Music, Production, marketing, PR and promotion and that's the way it is and it has always been.
It all makes sense, to keep on putting releases, to seriously work rather than dabbling, and to not hesitate to talk to others. We thank you for all those.

Personally being raised in and around business and successful ones at that I don’t need a manager as I do my own research and learn new things instead of paying for it. Very well put. I did an album with a guitarist about 8 years ago and everytime we did a new track I put it up, by the time the album was done everyone had already heard it!!! Doing a solo album now and while recording original tunes I’ve been keeping a profile by putting out covers with my own twist on them.... I’ve noticed that as I increase my output covers wise the older videos also get more views so I’m banking on people giving a damn about my solo release through the covers I’ve put out. It’s a slow process and double hard work because for every track I fine tune in the studio I’m also needing to get a cover done to keep the profile up while putting the album together..... great advice though and many points taken. Great video!!! For any new release you definitely need a marketing strategy. Buckle down and decide what your goals are for the release, then invest some funds and get the promotional train in action at least 30-60 days pre-release. If your goal is to sell units then plan on touring (if you've never toured before and are planning to release an album nationally then you are putting the cart before the horse IMHO). A lot of music takes years to catch on, so be in it for the long haul and keep pushing forward. 'Lizzo' released "Truth Hurts" in 2017 and it's now hitting the charts in 2019. 'No Doubt' released "Tragic Kingdom", did club tours for over a year with dismal turnouts, then blew up with a re-release of the record almost 2 years later (and with the help of a DJ playing a b-side from the album). Being an independent artist myself (with an extensive touring history) I can tell you this from firsthand experience...a lot of booking agents will not work with you unless you're on a label, the labels won't touch you unless you have a following in 10-15 markets (also inflated social media numbers), and radio won't take you seriously in most formats unless you're signed or on tour (catch-22). If you are already established within your hometown market then you should have no trouble getting a supporting slot on a national show coming through your town. If you can't land a spot, buy onto the show. Make sure you have plenty of merchandise on hand to sell at the show, but be prepared to match costs with the headliner and also expect to give up around 30% of sales to the headlining act (industry standard). You're going to be playing in front of the crowd that paid to see the headlining act, so you're essentially paying a promotional fee to play in front of them. Most tours will charge you $1 per head expected with a buy-on, negotiate as needed. If you have good songs and are a good band/performer you will win over any crowd and will hopefully impress the headlining act, the tour manager, or at the very least the venue.

Some great advice here. I always experiment and try and figure out what ways generate the best results when I release my DJ mixes. The most effective strategies for me were the ones where I actually got out of my comfort zone and reached out to individual people to listen and share my mixes. Even asking my more extroverted friends to spread the word. Keep up the great content!

This used to me. I wanted a manager to take care of all the legwork for me so I could focus on my craft but I have come to realize that you have to push yourself to do these things on your own. It's not easy and it wears you out but it is all worth it in the end, knowing that you built your empire from the ground up. At least it will be #onmyway

I try to get a new beat out every morning so I can listen to it throughout the day so when I get home I know the changes that need to be made before I put vocals on it! Then the next day I work on my visualizer and market it. Glad Im on the right track. Thanks Adam!

This is very inspirational. I started years ago with music and it didn't go anywhere. I stopped for a few years then. How ever, I started back up, took a different style ( way of expressing ) and yah I finally got some out on spotify and other platforms, but its still hard and finding the fans, seems to be very hard. I draw song ideas from various old song genres ingrained in my noggin during the first 4 decades of my life. That is what is in my vault. I recognize the vast canyon between that music and what's selling today. I've written several hundred “Old Guy” songs without ever being discouraged though, because I'm a song writer and not a song marketer. HOWEVER after hearing some very old genre tunes, whether hits or simply old “style” tunes, in MANY major product TV commercials, this dinosaur feels even more justified in stomping around this modern day world of music leaving “old feel” song droppings everywhere. I do not have any family member or so-called friend who can help me with that, and it is also incredible if you think that I have friends in the music field.. the answer comes by itself: they are not friends and not a good family too. this are the reasons also why I cutted dozens of relations, even the closest ones. I believe in being loyal, in true feelings and true friendship. For me someone who do not support me is not a friend, specially when I find out that they are not even enjoying for my successes and laugh about my failures. Very well put. I did an album with a guitarist about 8 years ago and everytime we did a new track I put it up, by the time the album was done everyone had already heard it!!!
Doing a solo album now and while recording original tunes I’ve been keeping a profile by putting out covers with my own twist on them.... I’ve noticed that as I increase my output covers wise the older videos also get more views so I’m banking on people giving a damn about my solo release through the covers I’ve put out.
It’s a slow process and double hard work because for every track I fine tune in the studio I’m also needing to get a cover done to keep the profile up while putting the album together..... great advice though and many points taken. Thank you.

Great video!!! For any new release you definitely need a marketing strategy. Buckle down and decide what your goals are for the release, then invest some funds and get the promotional train in action at least 30-60 days pre-release. If your goal is to sell units then plan on touring (if you've never toured before and are planning to release an album nationally then you are putting the cart before the horse IMHO). A lot of music takes years to catch on, so be in it for the long haul and keep pushing forward. 'Lizzo' released "Truth Hurts" in 2017 and it's now hitting the charts in 2019. 'No Doubt' released "Tragic Kingdom", did club tours for over a year with dismal turnouts, then blew up with a re-release of the record almost 2 years later (and with the help of a DJ playing a b-side from the album).
Being an independent artist myself (with an extensive touring history) I can tell you this from firsthand experience...a lot of booking agents will not work with you unless you're on a label, the labels won't touch you unless you have a following in 10-15 markets (also inflated social media numbers), and radio won't take you seriously in most formats unless you're signed or on tour (catch-22). If you are already established within your hometown market then you should have no trouble getting a supporting slot on a national show coming through your town. If you can't land a spot, buy onto the show. Make sure you have plenty of merchandise on hand to sell at the show, but be prepared to match costs with the headliner and also expect to give up around 30% of sales to the headlining act (industry standard). You're going to be playing in front of the crowd that paid to see the headlining act, so you're essentially paying a promotional fee to play in front of them. Most tours will charge you $1 per head expected with a buy-on, negotiate as needed. If you have good songs and are a good band/performer you will win over any crowd and will hopefully impress the headlining act, the tour manager, or at the very least the venue.

Some great advice here. I always experiment and try and figure out what ways generate the best results when I release my DJ mixes. The most effective strategies for me were the ones where I actually got out of my comfort zone and reached out to individual people to listen and share my mixes. Even asking my more extroverted friends to spread the word. Keep up the great content!

Biggest thing that stood out to me in this video is that I have to be consistent.
This used to me. I wanted a manager to take care of all the legwork for me so I could focus on my craft but I have come to realize that you have to push yourself to do these things on your own. It's not easy and it wears you out but it is all worth it in the end, knowing that you built your empire from the ground up. At least it will be #onmyway

I try to get a new beat out every morning so I can listen to it throughout the day so when I get home I know the changes that need to be made before I put vocals on it! Then the next day I work on my visualizer and market it. Glad Im on the right track. Thanks Adam!

This is very inspirational. I started years ago with music and it didn't go anywhere. I stopped for a few years then. How ever, I started back up, took a different style ( way of expressing ) and yah I finally got some out on spotify and other platforms, but its still hard and finding the fans, seems to be very hard. I must admit i did think if I'm networking all the time how am I gonna have time to actually make the music but you're right, you have to take things into your own hands, nobody is gonna hold your hand, it's just learning how to actually do that.... I'm starting to see there're quite a few things i haven't been doing. I get the guy holding back on material, i would of thought you gotta build a momentum and release over a year steadily .. it does make sense what you're saying.

this is an awesome video. I was guilty of this for a long time. always excuses about not enough money etc. the most important thing is to be working on new content and releasing it. I have albums of music and I've been hesitant to release it without videos, and I've finally got videos rolling out

I'm a senior citizen. I draw song ideas from various old song genres ingrained in my noggin during the first 4 decades of my life. That is what is in my vault. I recognize the vast canyon between that music and what's selling today. I've written several hundred “Old Guy” songs without ever being discouraged though, because I'm a song writer and not a song marketer. HOWEVER after hearing some very old genre tunes, whether hits or simply old “style” tunes, in MANY major product TV commercials, this dinosaur feels even more justified in stomping around this modern day world of music leaving “old feel” song droppings everywhere.

About the other topic you mentioned. I do not have any family member or so-called friend who can help me with that, and it is also incredible if you think that I have friends in the music field.. the answer comes by itself: they are not friends and not a good family too. this are the reasons also why I cutted dozens of relations, even the closest ones. I believe in being loyal, in true feelings and true friendship. For me someone who do not support me is not a friend, specially when I find out that they are not even enjoying for my successes and laugh about my failures. Thru the years this got a very bitter taste(specially for my family) but it will make me stronger and smarter. I'm really glad I've just found your channel.
