This is my favourite song of all time. I was born in 1976 and this song has always been there from my first memories. The Beatles are my dads and my favourite band. My mum trained as a nurse in Liverpool in the early sixties and got to see the Beatles in Liverpool. My mum like Paul McCartneys mum was a midwife and also died of cancer.
Paul’s mum appeared in a dream when he was wrestling with issues he was going through with the Beatles as they were nearing the end….she said ‘let it be’

His mother's name was Mary. She came to him in a dream at a troubled time in McCartney's life.
The song has been adopted as a Catholic anthem because of the name Mary. The virgin Mary could absolutely come in a dream and say Let It Be, and the sound of music.
If his mother was named Gladys there would be no discussion on this.

Hey there! You're pretty well close in your interpretation. Sir Paul had actually clarified this meaning in several interviews: at this point in the career of The Beatles there was quite a bit of tension and strife-which helped lead to their breakup. A lot of these arguments the group would have involved the direction of the band and their music and the state of their business, Apple Corps Ltd., their record company (not to be confused with Apple Computers). Paul felt particularly stressed about the situation, details of which can be found and/or discussed elsewhere. Anyway, one night Paul fell asleep and he had a dream about his mother, Mary, who had sadly died of breast cancer when he was about 14 years old. In this dream, she had told him something to the effect of, "It's ok. You're gonna be alright, just let it be." When McCartney woke up he was inspired to write this song. Love you. Love your reactions!

It is his mother, a mid wife named Mary, who died when he was 14 of cancer. It was very hard on the family. Years later she appeared in a dream during a stressful time in his life and said, Let It Be, which he woke up and began the song, hence, "I wake up to the sound of music". Many have used it in a religious context, which Paul has no problem with, but it was not a religious song when he wrote it.

Jayy, the "Mother Mary" reference is about Paul's mother coming to him in a dream but what is so beautiful is that it also works as a religious idea as well. No, he's not literally speaking about the Virgin Mary, but the effect is the same: the vision comes to him in a dream and the message lifts him up out of his troubles and gives him new hope for the future and the present. That, and the song is clearly a Gospel-style song, with choral background singers and "Church"-organ and so on. That's one of the great things about the song is those wonderful people in our lives, those who love us, even if they have gone on to the Afterlife, still bring us help, care, love and wisdom, that is "of God", if you will; it's as if an angel appears. In effect, that is exactly what happened, to Paul.

Jchampboston, that is a really good point. Paul was incredibly worried about the future of The Beatles. Did you see the Peter Jackson documentary "Get Back"? There is a point at which George had, essentially, left the band and John was a no-show. Paul and Ringo were sitting there, with some other folks, waiting and wondering what was going on. The camera focused in on Paul's face and he is just fighting back the tears! His face was ashen and he looked like a broken man. OMG, that hit me so deep when I saw that. God bless Paul and all the lads!

Good catch, yes the song is about Paul's mother Mary (a midwife) who died of Breast Cancer when he was 14, years later Linda McCartney would also die of Breast Cancer. Paul was named after his father Jim, Paul's name is actually James Paul McCartney but called Paul so he wasn't confused with his father. Paul was raised in a loving family with tons of Aunts and Uncles who were always around. John was another story his mother Julia was very irresponsible, and his father wasn't there. John's aunt Mimi went to Social Services and had John taken away, she and her husband raised him, he loved his Uncle but was always butting heads with his Aunt. John's mother married a lot of men and had other kids, none with the same father. She and John reconnected when he was a teenager, Julia was a free spirit and helped foster John's love of music, She was run over by a drunken off-duty cop when John was 17. John named his first son Julian after her. When John divorced his first wife, Cynthia, John was never around for his son. Paul, who was from a big family, would visit him a lot. In the back of a Limo on his way to visit Julian, he wrote a song to comfort the kid, Hey Julian which became Hey Jude. Pauls love of music came from his father and his extended family

"Mother Mary" is a biblical reference... but the song itself was inspired by Paul McCartney's late mom Mary McCartney, who died from cancer while Paul was a teenager. "Let it be" was something she would tell her son when he was upset... Paul McCartney always spoke fondly of his mom... Tragically, he lost his first wife Linda McCartney in 1998 to cancer as well - they were married for 30 yrs, and she was the love of his life.
John Lennon also lost his mom to an accident in the 50's... he wrote the Beatles song 'Julia' about his mom.
If u wanna hear Ringo Starr sing... the Beatles songs w/ him are: "Yellow submarine"... "Act naturally" ... "With a little help from my friends" ... " "Octopus' Garden".

The song is about his mother but he has stated he is very happy that people find solace in it as a song of faith. Also the fact that he made it sound like a hymn is probably no accident. Having grown up a catholic he would have known exactly how people would have taken the song. And finally there is a biblical text that McCartney either consciously or subconsicously appears to allude to. Luke 1:38, Then Mary said: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. 'Let it be' done to me according to your word. And the Angel departed from her." Anyhow, you can see why McCartney is so comfortable with the song also being about the Virgin Mary if people wish it to be.

There’s some debate as to which Paul was speaking of his mother “‘Mary” or the Virgin Mary that he was referring to. Most think it was referring to his own mother, but he wouldn’t be too far to think that he was trying to imply a dual meaning here. We don’t really know exactly what he meant. Like many artists, he seems disinclined to be specific about the meaning of his work and to allow others to interpret in whatever way works for them,

@Jayy- This was Paul singing this great song. One of the big things that John and Paul had it common and it really helped to bond them was they both lost there mother when they were very young. Paul's mother was named Mary and Johns was named Julia. John has a song that he did while with the Beatles and its called Julia in reference to his mom. You might react to it sometime.

This is Paul on vocals and he wrote it. Just a fyr...in the early days of Beatles, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote most of the songs together for the Beatles. George matured later in terms of songwriting. Anyhoo...John and Paul agreed to credit both for writing songs. This contract continued into the later years of Beatles even though the songs gradually became solo writing efforts. So even though Paul wrote this song, writing credit is 'Lennon and McCartney'. Same is true of songs that John wrote by himself..Paul got co-writing credit. I don't know why they continued this co-writing credit into the later Beatles but they did. You won't find a Beatles song that credits John or Paul solely for writing it.

@@THEJAYYSHOW --Lucie gave a good explanation. I'll add that there is no good reason for John to be official co-writer of 'Let It Be', just as there is no good reason for Paul to be official co-writer of 'Come Together', a well-known song by John Lennon. Co-writing credit goes back to early days when they truly did write songs together. Maybe like a marriage, John and Paul continued this pattern even into the later years of Beatles when they wrote songs separately for the most part.

I had always thought he was talking about a mother superior (nun) with "Mother Mary" and I later found out it was indeed his mom, but I kind of like the nun imagery.

Paul McCartney sang the vocals in this song. Mary, sometimes, is a reference to marijuana. Jimi Hendrix recorded a song entitled "The Wind Cries Mary", which can be interpreted as a song about marijuana. Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers recorded a song/music video entitled "Last Dance With Mary Jane", which can be interpreted as a song about smoking marijuana.

It's good to be "lyric intensive", but one needs to see (or hear) all aspects including the sound, instrumentation, the feel of the song, so many things. And if there's a video, you should touch on that as well. It's a work of art from all points of view and a good reaction touches all bases, if you know what I mean. You do a good job, pretty much. Keep it up. This is a classic. Do "I am the walrus" and don't even try to understand the lyrics. Just "Let It Be".

Paul lost his mother, Mary, when he was just 14 to cancer. He used to go to John's mothers house for dinner and when he left, she would say to John. "That poor boy, losing his mother." Julia was hit by a car and died shortly after. John had just turned 17. The World took their mothers, so in each other they found a brother and changed the world.
