I've seen this tool used as well. I'm curious if it's quicker than the roller berry or about the same and how often it gets stuck or if you have had to replace it. I don't disagree with finding cheaper alternatives, the Roller Berry has worked for me and so if you can afford it, it is durable and I've had very little issues with it.
I just blanch them for a minute and then dump into ice-water. I always did this with grapes, blueberries, blackberries, etc whenever I dehydrated. It breaks the skin and allows them to readily dry. No expensive equipment or pricking tools necessary.

Great video. Just found you which is awesome because I have been looking into a cottage license. I cater and used to have a store front. I miss it some days! Blueberries, and most berries are on the Dirty Dozen list, and I don't even know I trust organic these days! I would be inclined to soak in lemon water and then rinse. When I do this with grapes you can't imagine all the nasty that comes off them! Freeze drying does concentrate the flavor for sure. You might consider powdering the boo boos, even if you have to dry them longer. The powders can be added to smoothies or made into baby food. The dried veggie powders can be used the same way and in soups and dips, etc.... Keep up the great work. I am on my way to go buy more Bit O'Honey now thanks to you :0)
That tool is Kool! You should only need it for fresh blueberries. Frozen blueberries you shouldn't need it. The flash freezing of commercial methods let's you skip the piercing process. Kirland Frozen Blueberries. Organic and no added anything. Fresh, I just used an Xacto knife. Fresh blade EVERY BATCH though. The acid in the blueberries will rust it after it is used. The Roller Berry would be fantastic if you can spend the money. Freeze Dried Blueberries are Freaking Amazing! ❤😍😋
Yes fresh blueberries for sure, I love the tool and it’s been a time saver for me. Freeze dried blueberries are one my favorite fruits to freeze dry outside of pineapple

I believe the run-aways happen when the berry is popped off the spike as it is rolled. There is a shield on the roller that prevents it from getting jammed up with berries.
$ 160.00 for this roller...very expensive! I use a meat tenderizer with 36 needles works great! Only around $24.00 . If I was selling my berries I would definitely buy the roller. Good video!
We freeze all our blue berries all through the summer season then all through the winter we freeze dry the already frozen berries to save dryer time. We pour out 7# on a single layer on 5 medium trays. Because they are hard we use a $20 meat tenderizer to pierce the skin. Works really well. Takes half hour to process and freeze dry time is about 30 hours.
I'm living currently in a Latin American country and appreciate all the free information you give to us. I hope to come up with my own freeze drying and dehydration business. Unfortunately we will have to source our freeze driers in China and I am kinda scared about the quality of those machines. Keep on posting videos. Thanks

Seems like to me making preserves out of the fruit and canning is an easier process. Though canning or freeze drying are probably not cheap these days since everything seems expensive anymore. Especially anything that may be just a bit healthy for you instead of junk food. You are what you eat. And your diet is where you start for a healthy body, mind, and spirit. This is interesting as I am not very familiar with freeze drying food. Only canning.
Red Gamma lids are prone to cracking. I have dozens of blue/green/white but every lid 12 cracked. Gamma replaced them for me but it’s a warning. It’s something about the color because I’ve bought them years apart.

I have had gamma seals fail for me. I still like them but I do not trust the seal as much and make sure that my buckets are stored where the seal isn't going to be tested. I also store the contents headed for a bucket in smaller sealed packets just for extra safety.
Interesting, I would agree they are not 100% safe-proof but they have worked for me for at a minimum 4-6 months. Candy has always worked but Fruit I keep in a cooled area with the buckets and that's why I put some desiccant packets in the buckets as well. A lot of the small freeze-drying business industry is still relatively new so some things are common knowledge and others are just here-say so I agree it's not 100%. Probably not suitable for commercial, but most ppl I know use a (new) cat brush to poke the berries. One that you can press the back to eject the hair.

Idaho must have better Cottage Laws than GA because here another place can't sell your product. I can't sell to a store that then sells my stuff with only a Cottage license which sucks! You can only ship within the state as well. At least you don't have to have a second kitchen now, although I do.
Check with your local health district and ask about consignment and if that's permitted under cottage food law. If it is then you can have a store rent you shelf space and then you would still be technically selling direct to consumer because the store isn't purchasing wholesale from you. It's a grey area but unless it's written down in state law, you may try that route. Good luck!
Both don’t need any preparation other than washing them. I have not had good success with blackberries, they do not dry well which I believe is more to do with their sugar content than the water.
We are contemplating purchasing a freeze dryer to start a local business and would like to know what all is involved, I.e., if licensing, insurance and inspections are needed to sell the products.

I’ve tried something like that, but the roller Berry has a area to catch the blueberries and drop them back on the tray so the other pizza cutters wouldn’t have that mechanism and they would just stick to the roller and you’d have to continuously pull off the blueberries

Yes, you need to do it in a row so that you hit each one and the tool drops the blueberries back down on the tray. If you do a whole tray you don't get the movement that the tool was meant for.
Looking at the different models out there, the spacing between needles seems too big for a small item like blueberries. But I never tried it's just a guess.
Most specialty tools are overpriced items from another market... This is just a pet brush with a massive markup. We live in the wild blueberry capital so we collect nearly 20 gallons every year to freeze dry. I did the pet brush the first two runs but it gets really old, really quick. After 4 years of doing berries we found dunking in boiling water first then shocking them in an ice bath will split the skin and saves hours of manual processing. Way more economical this way.

USDA does not cover cottage food or commercial production less than $$$ dollars. If your statement was remotely true you could never sell anything food related. You have to wash apples to put in an apple pie to resell. They’ve been sold in cottage industry for a 200 years.
Absolutely you can! I've tried all the cheap ones but the Roller Berry has been by far the quickest, less mess and consistent tool Blueberries I've found. I had doubts on the price just like you but haven't looked back since I purchased.

A tray the width of the roller would be an awesome addition as I saw some berries roll away and not get poked
FrozenRight does have a tray specifically for the Roller Berry. I will be doing a separate video on that once I do some testing.

Yes you can! I haven’t used them yet so I do not know how they do compared to fresh when poked.

Great question! I use the sprayer on kitchen sink hose if you have one, it cleans off very easy and then I let it sit to air-dry.

I don’t think you need to pierce the skin on those because they are so delicate. Besides, the roller-berry would annihilate them!

Looks like youre missing some of the berries that the roller flings out to the side
Sometimes that happens if you overload the line of blueberries so if you want to make sure just make the line is more narrow and you won't miss any.

USDA does not cover cottage food or commercial production less than $$$ dollars. If your statement was remotely true you could never sell anything food related. You have to wash apples to put in an apple pie to resell. They’ve been sold in cottage industry for a 200 years.

Absolutely you can! I've tried all the cheap ones but the Roller Berry has been by far the quickest, less mess and consistent tool Blueberries I've found. I had doubts on the price just like you but haven't looked back since I purchased.

The tool is awesome, however the price is outrageous. I would seriously consider getting the tool if the price was more realistic. Sad how some people or companies will rip you off. People will buy it there are maroons everywhere - LOL!
