A tip for if you store your foods in jars. You can actually vacuum seal your jars using the freeze dryer. Take the shelves out of the freeze dryer (carefully disconnect the wire) and place the jars in the empty chamber. That's actually a great tip for people who could just barely afford a freeze drier and a food saver on top is just over budget. By the way the companies say the freeze dried food lasts DECADES...To be fair most people tend to add some kind of nut milk or cream to omelet eggs/scrambled eggs to make them a little more light fluffy...so they'd probably be in better if that were a part of the recipe. Super informative video, have seen this thing at my two favorite hardware home steading stores as of late... thank you!

We put a sheet of parchment on the tray with a sheet of paper towel over that...make sure they are prefrozen or they would probably stick.. lightly cover with another sheet of paper towel and parchment paper. Any mess is contained within the paper but it has been very little if we are diligent about blotting before drying. If you have $3,500.00
@@mccombskennels Harvest Right has a layaway plan as well. Something I am seriously considering that option!
Yeah I checked out the small one and it was 2500.00.

This is absolutely fascinating, I had no idea that a freeze dryer was available for domestic use
Yeh they been for a while and although come down in price .. it a big investment tho.. They did explain that and the reason why they made the investment. Got to give them a thanks for addressing freezer space and energy use elephant in the room for more diverse ways to more sustainable living..
I found a great one for abo uh t $3500. They're a little big too, but they are amazing!
If your chickens stop laying in the winter just put a light in your coop on a timer and also chickens need extra protein in the winter. You can take out a can of tuna or even a can cat food out to them and they will go crazy bc they love these and the eggs will start popping out again!!
Harvest right is a great freeze dryer
@@susanrowland4303 Should the hens not get a rest from laying? Just wondering if nature intended downtime.
I can't believe the beautiful colors of those peppers.
I was thinking the same thing!
they really do look beautiful when you line up your jars.
@@marthaadams8326 They really are beautiful...until they get bleached out by light. I had stored mine on the shelf in my kitchen and in less than a month my eggs, taco meat, peppers, strawberries and greens all faded. So now my jars get boxed away out of the light and high temperatures or stored long term in mylar bags.
@@janweight4551 so true, but the beauty comes out when you get to eat them.
Have you tried turning your homemade broth into freeze dried bouillon? Really weird styrofoam like paper when done but works great. Tastes delicious. Freeze dries everything is wonderful for hikes camping, road trips or when you have to evacuate. Great for meals when the power goes out too. You can also cook a meal then freeze dry it. Then you just add hot water and eat. Great for lunches at work. So fun. 😋
I think one of Kevin’s home made English muffins would make this meal fantastic!
I found a pan I could make them in. The perfect size to heat them in their own individual cradles and all I kept saying the pan was perfect for his English muffin recipe. I got a few funny looks.
On second thought, maybe two???
Awesome. Show us more. I was totally surprised when the eggs turned out slimy like regular eggs. Gross but awesome at the same time. Great video. Thank you for sharing
I would love to see more videos with more ideas of freeze-dried food quick meals. I also really like that you guys are able to reduce the plastic waste by using the vacuum sealer on the jars
This was awesome! I honestly thought a freeze dryer was more of a novelty item, but this showed me how valuable it can be!
My grandmother taught us to add maybe a teaspoon of uncooked rice to your salt shaker to keep the salt from clumping together.
now i know why i always find rice grains in her salt shaker hahaha
I’ve done that forever! 🤣 It works!

You could sell freeze dried back pack meals at the farmers market.
depends on the state and their laws.
Where do you store the jars? Does the temperature need to be about the same as canned jars?
@@gailwaddell2109 I do not know about temp for f.d. food, but assume the same rules apply to it. I have read no extreme temperatures. I have mine in a closed closet, but the door does get opened, so that is all I have without extreme temps.

Hi this is the second time trying to comment. So hope it makes it to you this time. I don't know much about preserving and even less about phone technology. my dad dehydrated apples is the extent of my knowledge. I have yet to brave my yard sale dehydrator this is how new preserving is to me. I had no idea there was home versions of freeze dryers from your channel not to mention learning all about gardening and everything! Its a new world for me. Any way I love your you tube info channel and to have the opportunity to win a freeze dryer of which I'm so amazed at how easy it is to use thanks to your channel. how very generous of you to make this available for everyone to get a chance at! Thank you sincerely: Yvonne Bowhay
I just finished freeze drying 4 dozen eggs this afternoon. I like to caramelize onions before freeze drying them. I also like freeze drying peaches since the store sells them for only part of the year.
We just dried peaches from our freezer a couple days ago. We LOVE them!!
How long does it take to freeze dry the eggs? Just got my FD last week. So excited.
You two are absolutely amazing! My favorite homesteaders, hands down! Thank you for working so hard to teach us as you are taking care of your family! God Bless you too! 🇺🇸🤟
Yes agreed. I so appreciate you both.
I have loved every one of your videos I’ve been able to watch so far. Love the way you work so well together. Just getting started with what y’all have been doing. Keep those videos coming. I’ve learned so much in a short time. Thanks.
Just brilliant Sarah and Kevin realy enjoy your videos.
This would be a good way to send fresh eggs in Mylar bags to family members that live far away...maybe elderly parents. Then they would have fresh eggs or omelets without having to go to the store. Love this machine. Thanks for sharing. BTW Kevin, add freeze dried ham to some of those scrambled eggs and peppers in the jar and then you have a western sandwich for lunch. Have a Blessed day.
Love that idea!
Good idea!
Wow! My mind is BLOWN by the freeze dried eggs! I can totally see why y’all are so excited about it!! So dang cool! Thanks for sharing. Y’all never fall to motivate me!
That freeze dryer is a real game changer. I give so much of my home grown veggies and herbs away because I don't have the freezer space to keep everything. Now that I've watched this, I'm going to fit a freeze dryer into my budget. Thank you! I enjoyed this so much, and you've done the hard yards. Hmmm, I wonder how it will work with fruit? I'll try that too when I get the FD.
I freeze dry sliced apples and peaches and they're great dry without rehydrating.
You could put in zip locks, then when ready add liquid and smash together. Then cook...or put baggie into boiling water. Girl scout trick.
Are.n’t plastic bags poison when heated
@@marlenecardinahl9346 Plastic is only harmful when ingested. As long as you aren't melting it, it should be fine. Cooking sous vide is a thing.

OMG!!! TO THIS DAY, THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER WATCHED!!! im not being sarcastic. you guys totally have me hooked on my next purchase. Thank you 😊
Thanks for your video. I've canned for years but am just learning about freeze-drying. Great information.
You could just freeze the white and yolks separately and then you could do meringue.
Did you mean freeze dry them separately? Now that's an idea!
Great idea for bakers
I was wondering about that.
You can purchase meringue powder from Wilton.

Incredible how the egg consistency was after adding water.
For transportation such as hunting or camping or a road trip, I would place the freeze dried ingredients into the double seal baggies. That way you won't have glass jars to break. And you can still add water to mix in the baggie.
Watch 4:10. LOL!!!!!!!! Sarah says "keep your hands out" in one motion!! LOL!!!!!!!!!

By the way the companies say the freeze dried food lasts DECADES...To be fair most people tend to add some kind of nut milk or cream to omelet eggs/scrambled eggs to make them a little more light fluffy...so they'd probably be in better if that were a part of the recipe. Super informative video, have seen this thing at my two favorite hardware home steading stores as of late... thank you!
eggs last 7 years
Most freeze-dried has an definite shield life.
That would be easy to add freeze dried milk😉
If you read those bulk survival freeze dried food, They will only last 25 years if you keep them down near freezing.

The egg shells can be roasted and and used in the garden using a coffee grinder to powderized you can also make calcium pills using gel caps.
About how long and about at what temp do you roast them?
@@bobbiejofouts1708 you can boil, microwave, roast enough they are dry so they will work in a coffee grinder. I would say roast about 350 for 10 minutes to kill e coli you don't want that in the garden or compost pile.
Yep and also just dry them on the counter or oven and breakup and give back to your chickens for calcium 🐔

It sounds amazing, but wouldn’t the fats get rancid?
@@cynthiafisher9907 I’m not sure.
As with other freeze dried food you will have a much shorter shelf life due to the higher fat content of the bacon
I did it! Just don't - fat is a real issue. It did f.d., but what a mess to clean up.
@@marthaadams8326 Don't give up! We do it all the time. Bacon wrapped asparagus and bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers.... We partially cook our bacon, pat it dry, wrap our veggies, roast and cool on a sheet of paper towels with another sheet to blot any extra grease and then prefreeze. They are sooo good but do take a bit longer to dry as the moisture has to come out the sides of the tray rather than the top as well.
