Why IBEW?

- Joining the IBEW has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made in my life.
In this video I give a small handful of reasons why I strongly believe that going the union route as an electrician is the best way to go. If you're looking into starting an electrician apprenticeship or are already currently a licensed electrician, I believe that you owe it to yourself and your family to look into the IBEW to see what it has to offer. It might just change your life too.

I worked 13 years as a non-union electrician before I joined the IBEW in 2013. Being an IBEW member has allowed me to support a family of 4 on a single income and purchase a house within a short commute of any job I want to work. My only regret is not joining sooner. Thank you so much for putting this video together!
Wow, Kevin! Thank you for sharing this!
It will be really encouraging for anyone thinking about joining the IBEW to read. I'm happy to hear that you eventually made the switch!
Thanks for watching! ⚡️
HOW DID YOU FUCKING JOIN
I HAVE A TRADESCHOOL DEGREE AND I HEADD PEOPLE WHO GO TO TRADE SCHOOL DONT GET HIRED. I WAS TOLD NOTHING ABOUT IBEW BEFORE I GOT MY DEGREE!!!!!!!!
I was already a journeyman electrician in Oregon when I joined. It’s as easy as walking in and saying you want to join. In Oregon and soon to be in Washington, you need to go through an apprenticeship to become a journeyman electrician. Trade schools won’t help you toward this, BUT, having gone though a trade school program should make you a better candidate if you apply for the apprenticeship. It is super competitive, so anything that helps is good. I’m sorry they misled you, it’s not uncommon from what I’ve heard.
That's awesome bro! I'm a local 440 apprentice.
I got accepted into the apprenticeship last 2 weeks ago, I started last Wed and now I'm almost halfway through bootcamp. I'm excited since I'm 32 and I wasn't really able to attend college but I don't mind a whole lot of reading and learning. Wish me luck ladies and gents!
@@Nick.CampbellMusic Hey man. 👋 The trade is very hectic depending on where you get sent out. If you've never worked construction it's a bit overwhelming but the more you ask questions and keep busy you'll be good. Now, in order to become a member apprentice takes some time depending on how many applications are processed, test scores, and interview process.
Lol is 32 the age people decide to be electricians? I'm 32 and have been trying to get onto an Apprenticeship. Went to a tech school for a year but it was crap and didn't learn anything because the teacher didn't even teach, everything was open book test you could use a phone for...
I’m 30 and I’m a plumber, but want to get my 309a. I’m looking to join as well.
Yo I'm 32 also my friend! I plan to try and join also! Best of luck to you!
I'm 31 looking to apply to a union as well
I'm a 40-year-old apprentice, and I've met apprentices that are older, so it's never too late! I've worked a lot of different jobs in my life, but this one is the only one that's made me feel secure financially and secure about my future.
You're really never too old to get in!
Thanks for sharing your experience! ⚡️
Damn bro that’s whassup I just turned 41 last month and im also an apprentice. Im a first year and love it so far.
I was a little worried I am too old at 30 but I keep seeing guys in their 40s say they're starting theirs. I think I'll be fine!
I’m 39 and a 2-1. It’s definitely never too late.
I have 35 yrs in the IBEW, I was only. able to get in because of NAACP law suit for discrimination against black and brown people. In small locals where they can keep you busy life is great, In local 134 Chicago they treat WOMEN and minorities like crap the same thing in local 697. I don't know why so many guys hate to see a woman earn the same money?
I want to thank everyone for taking the time to watch the video and for sharing your experiences down in the comments section!
I always try my best to respond as quickly as I can. Some comments are very quick and easy to respond to while others require a little bit more time. I always try to give well thought out responses, so sometimes the longer comments take a little bit longer for me to have a chance to respond to. Between this video, my 30 other videos, IG DM's, and being busy with life in general, sometimes this means that it will take some time before you hear back from me. I just ask for your patience and understanding in the meantime.
That being said, I appreciate everyone leaving their comments and questions! Keep them coming!
Thanks for all of your love and support! ⚡️

I’m 35 and have been an electrician for just under 10 years , I’ve hopped around non-union companies my whole electrical career .. I’m studying to take my journeyman exam in California … strongly considering going to my local IBEW office once I pass , after watching these vids. Thanks for the info. It’s been awesome
Great job brother there are many reasons to join! IBEW 440
Thanks for watching Jorge!
Agreed. This video was only just scratching the surface! Many more future videos to come ⚡️
Same here 440 💪🏽
This is very encouraging to see the constant praise for the union wherever i go, thanks for this video, i still dont see why people would go the non-union route
Bending some EMT to put in my portfolio now, super excited for when the application window opens up again
Hey, Matt!
I'm happy to hear that! It's true, anyone who has ever been a part of the IBEW will tell you first hand what an incredible opportunity it is. Not just them, but their families too. And that really says a lot.
EMT, right on! Love it! ⚡️
I’ve heard of/met several journeymen that make more money per month retired than they did working. It really is hard to deny how great the wage/benefit package is.
Hey Brian!
I've heard of that too! It's really second to none. What an incredible opportunity. ⚡️
Dude, I just really wanna thank you for this channel and your knowledge. You’ve helped me quite a bit with the quit tips and basically encouraging me to specifically join the IBEW instead of going the other route. Thank you brother and keep up the great content 👍🏽
It's my absolute pleasure! I'm very happy to hear that you're getting a lot out of my content and that it has helped steer you in a good direction!
Thanks for being a subscriber and supporting my channel! ⚡️
Great video Mad Electrician!! Keep up the awesome work 💯💯⚡️🔌
Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch! ⚡️
Local 48! Was non-union for many years, so glad I made the move. I actually enjoy my job. Who can say that?!
Let's go 48!!!
I couldn't say that either until I joined the IBEW! I really truly do enjoy my job. And I absolutely feel like I'm being treated fairly and being well compensated for my work.
Thanks for watching, Shawn!

16 year member in Las Vegas and it has been the best decision of my life. Great pay, great healthcare, and great retirement plan. I love my IBEW career, it has been full of opportunity. Great video and great to see another member sharing the benefits of being Union!
Thanks, Aaron! What an incredible opportunity the IBEW is. And for many it's hidden in plain sight. This video is one of my many attempts to spread more awareness about this fantastic career.
Thanks for watching! ⚡️
@@MadElectrician man my career as a union electrician has been very hard it’s easy winding down and I have no regrets. Being from Texas working at petrochemical plants where every black and brown worker on the job were laborers! Not because these men and women didn’t want to be craftsmen but systemic racism. I got into the union because of a NAACP lawsuit on behalf of black and brown people. Many locals at one time had it written in their bylaws no Negros! Just like with climate change we have to evolve to reflect modern conditions or we will all parish. I was lucky because I spent my 5 years for 2 journeyman. Cleaveland Reed 3 yrs and Mark Cody 2 yrs when I topped out and passed the first state test. I was working with a shop Mark was the Superintendent. Compac Computer was just getting started. Many of the top level executives attended his church. We were invited to bid work but the contractor we worked for was shady. They asked Mark to start his own company and the rest was history. When we started working on that facility the had 3 buildings. I went from a first year journeyman to Superintendent in ten 10 years. Running a crew of about 120 guys and girls. Today it’s the corporate headquarters of HP. By the time I had left the company I had hired Cleveland Reed to replace my position in the field a I spent most of my time estimating in the office. Mar sold the Company and became a missionary work dried up in Houston. I remember the old timers telling me to head to Chicago so I did. I can say this Chicago is the most racist and segregated big city I have ever lived in.
@aaron jones i live in las vegas and im currently attending ati and looking to get into IBEW when i graduate. Any advice?
After starting my journey with applying in September last year, I just got my call 2 days ago! Drug test is today and I start in a month! So excited to prove myself in this amazing industry, feels good to have at least a little power over corporate companies too!
Twenty minutes that fairly sums my experience. Joining IBEW has been one of THE best decisions of my life. Very hard working and supportive community!
I'm glad that you feel that way! As long as the video was, it was still really hard to condense everything that I wanted to say in the video. There will definitely be more where this came from in the future.
Thanks for watching, Travis! ⚡️
Best thing I have ever done
I completely agree, Ronald!
Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Non-union electrician of seven years who did his apprenticeship through the IEC here. I really regret not going the IBEW route. I was living in Northern Colorado at the time, and there wasn't much of a union presence there. I didn't want to commute to Denver for work and school, so I went non-union. I feel way behind in skill than union guys with the same amount of time on the job, and I'm just way underpaid compared to them. Fewer benefits too. I'm moving to SLC in a couple weeks. I have a non-union job lined up there. I'm going to start making moves to join the IBEW though.
Well done video Brother !!! If only the other guys knew the grass is really green on the other side of the fence.
Thank you, Levi!
It truly is! This video is one of my many attempts to try to show people that.
Thanks for taking the time to watch this! ⚡️

23 year member ibew 48. Nice video brother I hope a good number of non union wireman see this. Every single non union wireman I've worked with throught the years has expressed to me that they wished they joined the ibew sooner! I'm so happy to be a member has been very rewarding!
Thanks for watching James!
Always cool to see members for 48 watching my videos!
I too have had many non-union electricians tell me the same thing. There is a hesitancy at first to get in, but once they do they always seem to wish that they got in even sooner. ⚡️
Oh and btw maybe change your name to "happy electrician" nothing to be mad about in the ibew!
Haha! It’s just a play on my last name “Madrosen”. Not the first time I’ve heard that though 😂
How often did you climb poles? Or was it mostly work from a bucket truck?
Thank you for the comprehensive and insightful video. I have watched many of your videos and after each one I'm more inspired to apply for the IBEW. I just finished up college at SOU and moved to Portland so the IBEW 48 is looking pretty good to me. Best of luck finishing your apprenticeship and thanks for giving back to us through these videos!

Id like to know what's going on in some peoples head when they settle for non union, sub par, working conditions and wages. Like why ?
IBEW Local 191 best choice I've ever made for the long term. If your young ask yourself; where do you want to be in 40 years?
Any idea on how fast local 48 is taking on apprentices right now? Your videos helped me land a spot on the list at #25! Thanks man love your content
Local 665 lowered apprentice pay from 20 to 13 an hour. I am glad to hear you have a good local though. :)
A $7/ hour pay cut? What was the reasoning for that? I'm very sorry to hear that. Is the journeyman rate still the same?
@@MadElectrician the reasone they gave us was that we need to stay competitive, and journeymens pay has stayed about same for about 8 years now, they froze pay for 5 years to help the contractors stay in business. That's what they told me and others.

@@MadElectrician I was a non union electrician before getting into the union apprenticeship to become a lineman back in ‘08. Best decision I have ever made. Can’t complain making 300k a year plus benefits and retirement. I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. High school diploma and no student debt. Go union ✊🏻
Well done bro. Local 26 here since 2000
I got 7 years of experience. I worked industrial, commercial, residential. I'm having a really hard time getting into the union in delaware. Anyone have any tips on how to join?
I have a question so I went to my local IBEW about being an apprenticeship and they said I missed the apprenticeship sign ups so what I could do is start out as what they called a “CW1” until the next classes are available. I have a meeting to talk to them more about it Friday but is this a good route to go? Or should I just wait until the next apprenticeship sign ups and do that?
Any advice for us in Florida? The IBEW pay is beyond bad, $26 an hour or so for a journeyman! I can’t move. I want to pursue this profession but the pay is so bad.
Hello Mad. I was messing around with the like button and it went from 2.9 likes to 9k

Great video! Leave in Michigan, I am a national guard Electrician as Military occupation speciality, I really want to get into IBEW Union, what is the process and requirements ?
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
First off, thank you for your service! 🇺🇸
I think that you'll find that you will have an advantage during the application process because of the very high value that the IBEW places on veterans.
I actually have an entire playlist on my channel about "How to Become an Apprentice Electrician." In that series I cover pretty much everything in detail. You can also do a google search and try to find out where the nearest IBEW Local is to where you live. On their website there should be specific information about applying and the process.
Hope that you eventually choose to join! It really is an incredible opportunity ⚡️
Yes I have been looking into moving to Florida or Georgia but when I look at the pay for union worker it’s almost unbelievably how low it Is.
Yeah, it's pretty unfortunate how significantly the wages can vary from local to local. I've considered moving to Idaho but it's hard to justify taking around an $18/ hr pay cut.
I just got an offer to work for a contractor that works with my local IBEW. However, they want me to work before I get the apprenticeship? I don’t know if you’ve heard of something like that before, I wasn’t expecting to get to work so fast, haha. Not mad but I am kind of nervous because like you did, when you started, I don’t have much experience.
Hey Shawn! Wow, that's interesting. I haven't heard of that before. Are they wanting you to work as an apprentice or a material handler or something? Also which local is that with?
Probably nothing to be too concerned about. I think the nerves will be there no matter what in the beginning, but thankfully most people seem to be very understanding that new apprentices don't know much. I think that's awesome that you're being given an opportunity to get in though!
I hope they have talked to you about becoming an Organizer for this local
My guy always gets the freshest haircuts, great video!
Maybe I should make videos without hats on more often 😂
Thanks! ⚡️
I worked non union then went union and I highly recommend the IBEW. The education is excellent and the money and conditions are better as well. In LU 570 you arent going to make the money he is talking about here but its better than most all non union. The retirement cant be beat and wont be beat by ANY non union contractor. period. If youre good and dependable you may never ride the bench at the hall especially as an apprentice. They are cheaper than JW's so they keep them working. I was in the union for around 15yrs and have a nice pension coming to me. If I had spent my entire time in the union it would be much much nicer. I have nothing bad to say about the IBEW. My time there was very nice and I only got layed off "ROF" when I wanted it. Got bored and went to the aerospace industry.

I noticed that calculator didn't include GA as a state of choice, any information in regards to wage there ?
Furthermore state and federal laws supersede union contracts. Thank the textile workers, and women’s suffrage movement for what we know have as most working class battles were fought at the boilerplate outside of the AFL.
I retired from the IBEW, and from my experience, the international side of it was only looking out for themselves. They are only concerned with making sure that you're paying your dues, of which the local gets $1 to $2. The rest goes to the international. And even if work is slow and guys aren't working, they'll insist that the hall takes on a new class just so they can keep getting their money, they don't care about the local. If it wasn't for my local, I wouldn't have had really any kind of retirement pension to speak of. I retired at 59 1/2 and was encouraged to keep paying dues until my 65th birthday just so I could get $100, and that's before taxes, each month. I'm not saying not to join the union. Just don't expect much from the international.

If you get accepted in to the apprentice program, does IBEW set you up with an employer in your area or do you have to find a contractor on your own?
They will set you up with an employer. 👍🏼
I recently took my aplitude test and I passed next is the interview but if I get in the only thing that scares me is all these people saying that in the union you will get laid off a lot

Taking my test in February 2022 local 102 I hope I pass I’m 22
I was wondering because I was turned away at my interview does any construction experience help or do I have to do a electrician helper job to show I have the kind of experience for the apprenticeship I only ask because their is a long line of people waiting to be an electrician helper in my area and no work to shorten that line
I got that same southwire coffee table.

Do you need past electrical experience?
Just turned out -Though we say; Top out- here at 596. I enjoy my career thus far.
If I pass my boot camp and become an apprentice, can I work side jobs or work for another electrical company on my days off? My contract is the Inside Wireman for 5 years.
I suck at math..... I'm waiting to be called for my boot camp, any suggestions?
I have the option for a direct entry through the TERO program. I have 7200 hours already though that would count toward the 8k I need to journey out. I don’t want them to knock me back to a THIRD YEAR when I’m almost carded out. My family can’t afford that pay cut. Should i hold off on joining until i card 01?

I followed ALL his videos step by step. I have been accepted and start in July at local IBEW! Thank you so much for your guidance. You helped me go the extra mile! I created a slideshow portfolio, wrote the best cover letter! This was my first time applying and I made it! Thank you!

Awesome bro! I hope you get in; the best career decision I’ve made! I just turned out of local 369 in Louisville, KY.
Great video! Explains the benefits IBEW has to offer perfectly! Why Union? The question is WHY NOT?!

Started with ABC, Blessed to get into IBEW local 440 and go through the apprenticeship, 22 years in
Wow, Bernie!
That's really great to hear! It's an incredible opportunity and career for sure ⚡️
Local 477 here 💪🏽⚡️
Got family from local 440 IBEW.
Grew up in an IBEW household, and now I’m a few weeks into my apprenticeship. Very proud to be a member of the IBEW.
Right on, Juliana! Congratulations on starting your apprenticeship!
I remember how overwhelming everything was when I first started. Hang in there and remember that apprenticeships are 4-5 years for a reason.
Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Im assuming youre female. The reason I say is you'll encounter guys that arent keen on women in the trade. Ignore them. Women can do this work. Ive always felt this way and ended up with crews that were mostly female on a couple huge jobs I was on as a result. Ye brute strength is nice but I teach work smarter not harder. Not all women are cut out for the trades but then again not all men are either. Being female is much harder non union as well. Hope you make JW.
@@tonythomas951 I been thinking of getting my little sister into this trades aswell. She likes what I do and the money I make but she worries she might not have the muscle needed for this and when I think about it it still is a construction field in the end. It would be nice for her to join a lucrative career out of high school rather than go though college with debt and no guarantee of making a decent living so I may have her hit the gym with me to muscle up and improve stamina to be prepared for it. Have you encountered times where lack of strength would hinder your work? What other struggles would a woman in the trades encounter?
@@Weebwhacker as a girl you just have to be a little smarter. Learn to use leverage and use things like hand trucks and carts. Work smarter not harder. Let the guys do stupid shit cuz they are too lazy to ahead. Most of my time in the trade was in service so I was by myself a lot and was forced to come up with ways to get it done alone. Just learn to think how can I make this easier.
