I worked 13 years as a non-union electrician before I joined the IBEW in 2013. Being an IBEW member has allowed me to support a family of 4 on a single income and purchase a house within a short commute of any job I want to work. My only regret is not joining sooner. Thank you so much for putting this video together!
Wow, Kevin! Thank you for sharing this! It will be really encouraging for anyone thinking about joining the IBEW to read. I'm happy to hear that you eventually made the switch! Thanks for watching! ⚡️
I was already a journeyman electrician in Oregon when I joined. It’s as easy as walking in and saying you want to join. In Oregon and soon to be in Washington, you need to go through an apprenticeship to become a journeyman electrician. Trade schools won’t help you toward this, BUT, having gone though a trade school program should make you a better candidate if you apply for the apprenticeship. It is super competitive, so anything that helps is good. I’m sorry they misled you, it’s not uncommon from what I’ve heard.
I’ve been retired now for 7 years and living extremely well thanks to my IBEW retiree benefits. Being an IBEW member was undoubtedly the best decision of my life!
Hey Frank! Wow, that's really great to hear! I appreciate you watching and sharing that with us! Congratulations on being retired and enjoying that nice IBEW pension payout ⚡️
@@unionorganizer8331 Thanks Bob. I miss you and all of the dedicated brothers and sisters that I had the honor of working with and getting to know. I truly miss it! Be well!
Just got ranked 1st in my application class! So barring something crazy I will be starting my journey within a few months. Seeing a lot of the people out of the trade speak so highly of it just makes me more confident in the decision. Any advice for a 19 year old starting? So far most of what I’ve heard is just to listen and absorb as much as I can
I followed ALL his videos step by step. I have been accepted and start in July at local IBEW! Thank you so much for your guidance. You helped me go the extra mile! I created a slideshow portfolio, wrote the best cover letter! This was my first time applying and I made it! Thank you!
I'm a 40-year-old apprentice, and I've met apprentices that are older, so it's never too late! I've worked a lot of different jobs in my life, but this one is the only one that's made me feel secure financially and secure about my future.
I have 35 yrs in the IBEW, I was only. able to get in because of NAACP law suit for discrimination against black and brown people. In small locals where they can keep you busy life is great, In local 134 Chicago they treat WOMEN and minorities like crap the same thing in local 697. I don't know why so many guys hate to see a woman earn the same money?
As a proud retiree of IBEW local #3 from NYC I can say that my life and that of my family greatly benifited from my membership. Fair wages, the ability to travel, advance my career and not worrying about income or healthcare is how we lived . ... America was great when Americans were unionized ... .
The IBEW truly is an incredible opportunity! I am a long way off from retiring but I'm already feeling very fortunate to be a part of it and my family has benefited immensely. Thanks for watching and sharing that! ⚡️
I'm a 41 year old 7th term apprentice with a masters degree. Starting this journey is hands down the best decision I've made. I only wish I would have considered this before I owed so much in student loans. Local 48
Hey, Timothy! Thanks for watching and sharing a bit of your experience! We're just one term apart. I just started 8th term 🤘🏼 I agree that it has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made too. Let's both get turned out so we can start making those big bucks and so you can get those student loans paid off ⚡️
We are the best because we do the best. Motto for life with the work ethic quality backing it up. Working in so many different places for a decade, I learned the most and became the best at a professional level with the help of IBEW.
I have seen shit work done by both union amd non-union. So the union isn't the best. Most of the crap work is from the travlers that can't get work in there own local
I got the job! Class starts in September and I started work a couple weeks ago! Great video, thank you for making these, it really helped me make my decision to pursue this career.
Right on, Juliana! Congratulations on starting your apprenticeship! I remember how overwhelming everything was when I first started. Hang in there and remember that apprenticeships are 4-5 years for a reason. Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Im assuming youre female. The reason I say is you'll encounter guys that arent keen on women in the trade. Ignore them. Women can do this work. Ive always felt this way and ended up with crews that were mostly female on a couple huge jobs I was on as a result. Ye brute strength is nice but I teach work smarter not harder. Not all women are cut out for the trades but then again not all men are either. Being female is much harder non union as well. Hope you make JW.
@@tonythomas951 I been thinking of getting my little sister into this trades aswell. She likes what I do and the money I make but she worries she might not have the muscle needed for this and when I think about it it still is a construction field in the end. It would be nice for her to join a lucrative career out of high school rather than go though college with debt and no guarantee of making a decent living so I may have her hit the gym with me to muscle up and improve stamina to be prepared for it. Have you encountered times where lack of strength would hinder your work? What other struggles would a woman in the trades encounter?
@@Weebwhacker as a girl you just have to be a little smarter. Learn to use leverage and use things like hand trucks and carts. Work smarter not harder. Let the guys do stupid shit cuz they are too lazy to ahead. Most of my time in the trade was in service so I was by myself a lot and was forced to come up with ways to get it done alone. Just learn to think how can I make this easier.
I am an IBEW member where work slowed waaaay down in my local. I decided to travel for work to make ends meet. To be honest, I was scared at first but the brothers and sisters of this union have helped me see how great the opportunities there are. I have learned so much in my travels and this has enriched my experiences and my education as a JW. I would highly recommend joining the IBEW as well as traveling. It was an eye opener to see how various locals operated and the culture of brotherhood.
Great video bro! The IBEW has been good to me and mine. The Apprenticeship will teach you enough to earn a living as a Journeyman, and you'll never stop learning!
That's one of my favorite things about the trade. It's so multifaceted and the learning never stops, which means that it's always interested and never really gets boring! I appreciate you watching! ⚡️
I watched your video before taking the aptitude test, which gave me motivation. Now I'm anticipating the interview and the next steps to come! Thank you for the insights, it really helped answer my general questions.
One of the main reasons I joined and followed through with the process is because of your videos. Applied about a year ago and will be starting my apprenticeship in about 2 weeks, made it in on my first try. About 400 applicants and only about 20 of us at our first osha class. Thank you for all the videos man, you have no clue how much its helping some of us who might have doubts before starting work.
Great video and wage calculator. I have been a member for over 27 years, every thing I own is due to the IBEW and the sweat of my brow. Keep up the great work.
Hey Cody! Congrats on turning out! I'm actually still an 8th term apprentice myself and will be going back to back so that I can finish within the next nine months. Looking forward to it! I agree, Local 48 has been an incredible apprenticeship experience. ⚡️
Absolutely, Tony! What an incredible opportunity! And the crazy thing is that so many people are unaware of it! That's why I'm making videos like this ⚡️
I’m 35 and have been an electrician for just under 10 years , I’ve hopped around non-union companies my whole electrical career .. I’m studying to take my journeyman exam in California … strongly considering going to my local IBEW office once I pass , after watching these vids. Thanks for the info. It’s been awesome
I want to thank everyone for taking the time to watch the video and for sharing your experiences down in the comments section! I always try my best to respond as quickly as I can. Some comments are very quick and easy to respond to while others require a little bit more time. I always try to give well thought out responses, so sometimes the longer comments take a little bit longer for me to have a chance to respond to. Between this video, my 30 other videos, IG DM's, and being busy with life in general, sometimes this means that it will take some time before you hear back from me. I just ask for your patience and understanding in the meantime. That being said, I appreciate everyone leaving their comments and questions! Keep them coming! Thanks for all of your love and support! ⚡️ -Stephen
The best decision I made as a young adult when getting into the construction industry was working union. It’s done great by my family and I. I have a great family healthcare plan & access to training that’s employer funded. Out of all the career options to pick from out of high school, a debt-free education and a 6 figure salary are waiting for you with the IBEW. Very informative video Mad Electrician! Keep up the good work 🔌⚡️💯
I really appreciate you watching and leaving that comment! It truly is an incredible opportunity that's practically hidden in plain sight! I'll keep making the videos for sure. Thanks! ⚡️
Hey Ronald, Right on! Happy to hear that you made the switch and that it's been good for you! Are you still an apprentice? How's your schooling compared to the schooling with the non-union?
@@MadElectrician yes, still an apprentice. The schooling is night and day. In the non union I was taught the answers to the test. With the IBEW I am regularly challenged and pushed to learn the information. I know without a doubt I will be a better electrician with the training I am receiving with local 48.
Ronald Romero question when you transfer as a non union apprentice to the ibew did you had to start your apprenticeship all over or bc you had already time doing your apprenticeship on non union the ibew transfered those hours??
I’ve heard of/met several journeymen that make more money per month retired than they did working. It really is hard to deny how great the wage/benefit package is.
I failed my IBEW test in March. I am currently on week 2 at my first non union electrical contractor job as an apprentice. I still want to retest at my local union when the 6 month period has passed, until then I need to study. btw thanks for the videos man I cant wait to see more content as we both progress through our journeys!

Keep them coming!
Let's go 48!!! I couldn't say that either until I joined the IBEW! I really truly do enjoy my job. And I absolutely feel like I'm being treated fairly and being well compensated for my work. Thanks for watching, Shawn!
I just want to take the time to thank you for producing these videos. While I discovered your channel after I had applied for the IBEW apprenticeship the first time, your content kept me believing that I made the right decision. I applied for the first time in March 2019, found out in September 2019 that I did not make the cut. I then dedicated myself to rounding out my educational qualifications and reapplied in March 2020. Waited until November 2020 to have an interview scheduled, and then until April 2021 to be accepted! Finally, I found out a few weeks ago that I'm beginning my apprenticeship with the Safety & Orientation training on September 27th! So, again, thank you for all that you do to fly the flag of the IBEW. I can't wait to get started. Cheers, Future IBEW Local 353 sparky!

@@MadElectrician man my career as a union electrician has been very hard it’s easy winding down and I have no regrets. Being from Texas working at petrochemical plants where every black and brown worker on the job were laborers! Not because these men and women didn’t want to be craftsmen but systemic racism. I got into the union because of a NAACP lawsuit on behalf of black and brown people. Many locals at one time had it written in their bylaws no Negros! Just like with climate change we have to evolve to reflect modern conditions or we will all parish. I was lucky because I spent my 5 years for 2 journeyman. Cleaveland Reed 3 yrs and Mark Cody 2 yrs when I topped out and passed the first state test. I was working with a shop Mark was the Superintendent. Compac Computer was just getting started. Many of the top level executives attended his church. We were invited to bid work but the contractor we worked for was shady. They asked Mark to start his own company and the rest was history. When we started working on that facility the had 3 buildings. I went from a first year journeyman to Superintendent in ten 10 years. Running a crew of about 120 guys and girls. Today it’s the corporate headquarters of HP. By the time I had left the company I had hired Cleveland Reed to replace my position in the field a I spent most of my time estimating in the office. Mar sold the Company and became a missionary work dried up in Houston. I remember the old timers telling me to head to Chicago so I did. I can say this Chicago is the most racist and segregated big city I have ever lived in.
This is very encouraging to see the constant praise for the union wherever i go, thanks for this video, i still dont see why people would go the non-union route Bending some EMT to put in my portfolio now, super excited for when the application window opens up again
Hey, Matt! I'm happy to hear that! It's true, anyone who has ever been a part of the IBEW will tell you first hand what an incredible opportunity it is. Not just them, but their families too. And that really says a lot. EMT, right on! Love it! ⚡️

Local 313 here, best decision I've ever made. Apprenticeship was in depth and we can work in any environment. Commercial, industrial, data centers, tele-data, fire alarm, PLC/control/instrumentation work, robotics/assembly line controls, substations. Love my job.
You were a huge help with me getting into the Union, so thank you man. I actually just started on my first job this week. I was worried it was gonna be hard for me to learn and catch on to stuff since I had absolutely zero experience in construction or with tools, but I’m doing pretty well so far. You definitely can’t beat the perks that come with being in the Union. The benefits are insane
Joining the local IBEW 48 apprenticeship has literally been the most solid decision I’ve ever made. Only thing I’d change? I’d have done it sooner!!! JOIN TODAY!
I agree! 😂 I should have started when I was 18! I'm very happy that I made the decision to join the IBEW and take advantage of this incredible opportunity ⚡️
I tried to join. I was a union pipeliner for 15 years, put out of work by Biden. I passed the aptitude test and went through the interview but was denied. But it seems like 18 year old kids with no experience got the job because their dad or relative was in the union already. Biden told us pipeliners to find other jobs so I tried and IBEW turned their back on me. Thanks Biden. Your loss IBEW!
Dude it’s tough sometimes. It took me a bit to get in. But it’s one of those things. Nothing easy is good and nothing good is easy. It’s competitive and hard because it’s worth it. I don’t know you personally but we are always trying to help material handlers on the job get in and I am always trying to help people I’ve met to get in. What local are you trying to get in to?
After starting my journey with applying in September last year, I just got my call 2 days ago! Drug test is today and I start in a month! So excited to prove myself in this amazing industry, feels good to have at least a little power over corporate companies too!
Starting as a helper with Electrical contractor that offered minimal training or opportunity for apprenticeship. When applications for an IBEW apprentice ship became available. What a difference Training while gaining on the job training. The variety of job sites and the range of benefits allowed me and other people to earn a living, medical benefits and a defined pension plan that belongs to me not a corporation to pilfer.
I've been a nurse for about 2 years. I'm burnt out from healthcare and have just started seriously researching the IBEW. Your videos have been so helpful and I plan on applying when my local union opens its application!
Do it Maureen. It's somewhat ironic that you'll be going into this. Just because there are a lot of hazards. Best of luck to you. I see it as a daily work out and just exercise. Haha plus you'll learn a lot on how different structures are built.
Good to see someone spreading the union word out there keep it up brother. I'm A 13 year IBEW Local 20 member and it out waits all the open shops out here in DFW in Wages and benefits.
23 year member ibew 48. Nice video brother I hope a good number of non union wireman see this. Every single non union wireman I've worked with throught the years has expressed to me that they wished they joined the ibew sooner! I'm so happy to be a member has been very rewarding!
Thanks for watching James! Always cool to see members for 48 watching my videos! I too have had many non-union electricians tell me the same thing. There is a hesitancy at first to get in, but once they do they always seem to wish that they got in even sooner. ⚡️
10-20 years ago sure. unfortuenly the america we once knew. Is no longer. I dont know any young guys (25-40) that are supporting a family without a dual income from both parents...Project managers, etc are the exception.
Hey man, I hope your still active on UA-cam because I’m looking to join, it’s either local 103 or WJG electric (non-union). I’m worried that it will take a long long time to get into local 103 because I’m green. WJG will take my in anytime and I’ll go through their apprenticeship program. I’m thinking about doing WJG while applied for local 103, I’m just a little lost with those options if you can help clear some of that up please.
Thanks for all the videos, Stephen! Your playlist has helped me so much in my journey to becoming an apprentice. I recently had my interview at local 46 in Seattle, WA. Great Video! 3rd generation 30 year IBEW member myself. It's been an amazing ride so far, provided a comfortable living with great benefits and retirement.
Well said. I started my career as an Union Electrician and after hearing from others about the cost of school on the non-union side, not to mention the cost of tools, I count my blessings that I went Union right from the start. I don't think I could have afforded to otherwise. I have to say that even with all of the monetary benefits of union over non-union, my favorite benefit is the brotherhood that all IBEW members share. It really is like a family that you can count on.
I'm a 19 year old first term apprentice of local 60, I didn't have a dream of getting health insurance from my employer until I made it in the union. Collective bargaining is the only way to better working conditions for sure
Thank you for such great content & honesty. I have my first interview tomorrow w/ the local IBEW. I'm 50 and have been doing industrial electrical work in the oilfield for 2 1/2 years. I wish I'd done this years ago.
Non-union electrician of seven years who did his apprenticeship through the IEC here. I really regret not going the IBEW route. I was living in Northern Colorado at the time, and there wasn't much of a union presence there. I didn't want to commute to Denver for work and school, so I went non-union. I feel way behind in skill than union guys with the same amount of time on the job, and I'm just way underpaid compared to them. Fewer benefits too. I'm moving to SLC in a couple weeks. I have a non-union job lined up there. I'm going to start making moves to join the IBEW though.
Thanks for the great video! The IBEW gives me the ability to provide a better life for me and my family and the security to know I’ll be able to retire comfortably. Always great know my IBEW brothers and sisters always have my back!

Excited to go into work most days and it will allow me to very comfortably enjoy my retirement

Been thru several different Unions in my career life, wouldn’t trade my IBEW time for anything and I’m not even an electrician!
It really is an incredible opportunity. Thanks for sharing your experience! ⚡️
Choose to become a Union electrician at the age of 18 and it was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life
Hey Alex! I only wish that I got in at the age of 18!
Good for you! ⚡️
I'm doing the same thing
How much are you making and hour? if you don’t mind me asking

Best decision of my life. The IBEW is the way.
This is the way ⚡️
We are the best because we do the best. Motto for life with the work ethic quality backing it up. Working in so many different places for a decade, I learned the most and became the best at a professional level with the help of IBEW.
Hey Alex!
I completely agree! The IBEW has definitely made me better in more ways than one too. Wouln't trade this career for anything else ⚡️
It’s too bad I had to leave the union due to moving. But the take away from what I learned is priceless.
I have seen shit work done by both union amd non-union. So the union isn't the best. Most of the crap work is from the travlers that can't get work in there own local
Great wages, health care and pension and also most importantly respect. Respect in the trades is spelt I.B.E.W
100%!
It really is the full package! ⚡️
Non union don’t respect union for some odd reason

Grew up in an IBEW household, and now I’m a few weeks into my apprenticeship. Very proud to be a member of the IBEW.

Got family from local 440 IBEW.
That's really great to hear, Lav!
Wishing you the best of luck on the rest of your application process! ⚡️
Can you fail the aptitude test?
One of the main reasons I joined and followed through with the process is because of your videos. Applied about a year ago and will be starting my apprenticeship in about 2 weeks, made it in on my first try. About 400 applicants and only about 20 of us at our first osha class. Thank you for all the videos man, you have no clue how much its helping some of us who might have doubts before starting work.
Great video! Explains the benefits IBEW has to offer perfectly! Why Union? The question is WHY NOT?!

I’m honestly inquiring about joining my local IBEW. I guess I’m one of those “late bloomers” when it came to figuring out what I wanted to do in life. I’m just glad I did finally figure it out. Real excited about this.
This has sold me on applying to my local apprenticeship program. Thank you!
Interviewed on May 20th, ranked 13, called today and now im ranked 18 despite them taking another class this month. Really hope I'll still get in.

@@AnthonyBrown-bj3tk Hey Anthony, who did you call specifically about your ranking? I just got my ranking, and I may get curious in a few months or so. I’m at the Local 48 too.
Been IBEW for 30years + . The whole country needs a good worker, stay strong and keep trying it will be the best decision for your life.
Local 760 Knoxville TN... Joined March of 2007 absolutely best career decision I could have made!
I have been a Union Electrician for 15 years and it is the only way to go, solid pay and incredible benefits
This seems to be to consensus opinion from anyone who has put a considerable amount of time into the trade.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience! ⚡️

IBEW Local 48 has certainly served my family well! 😁👍
Wooo! 48 LET'S GOO!! ⚡️
We really do have a great local union here. I'm very proud to be a part of 48 ⚡️
My Dad is a 20 year retiree of Local 46. Pension check comes every month and a 401k and and international pension. Only way to go for a blue collar guy!
100%!
Such a fantastic opportunity! I'm constantly reminded of what a blessing it is to be a part of the IBEW ⚡️
24 years for me in the IBEW. 9 years inside journeyman wireman. 15 years hotstick lineman up to 500kv. From running wire and bending pipe inside buildings, to hanging out of helicopters and climbing 300’ towers. Zero regrets. I’ve made a great living. IBEW strong, great video 👊🇺🇸
How often did you climb poles? Or was it mostly work from a bucket truck?
Been camped out in line to pick up an application since yesterday. Thanks for the videos!
Love the message. IBEW all the way!
Thanks Derek! 100%! ⚡️
Been working in telecom for 1 year and a half, and had multiple union electrician throughout multiple sites convince me to join. I now have my orientation on July 27 and I’m very excited to start on my new journey
I have recently joined the IBEW, and I Love it
That's great to hear Isaiah!
There's a lot to love about it! ⚡️
Great vid brother! I’m eventually gonna join the union, right now I’m with a non union company through my school for my electrical apprenticeship
Right on, Anthony! You can join at any time. As you can tell from the comments, most people absolutely love being a member of the IBEW. Can't wait to have you join and be a part of the brotherhood ⚡️
Most union apprenticeships will credit you for most if not all of your progress in your apprenticeship during your non union time. I know in my local they will give you 100% credit for your working hours and allow you to test out of years based on your knowledge and ability.
Took all his advice and got into local 332 at 21 been a great year so far
So stoked to hear that brother! Congratulations!! ⚡️🤘🏼⚡️
Great video as always!
Thanks bro! ⚡️
