I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in the Carthusian monastery in Vermont, USA. It was in the middle 1970s. It was a wonderful experience, and all the monks were kind and very spiritually minded. I corresponded with one of the fathers, of blessed memory, , a German Carthusian, for a few years after, until he passed away. His letters of spiritual direction to me in the world, are still my treasures. I eventually tried a Trappist monastery in Canada, cloistered but not as strict. I waited too long in my life, and I couldn’t adapt to the rigid schedule of cloistered life. However, I will always be grateful for the opportunities I had. Some think being a monk, or nun, is “a wasted life,” but that’s because they believe that actions, in the world, are more important than a life dedicated to prayer. They have a high opinion of their worth and think that God needs their actions and works to accomplish His Ends. God is Almighty and Sovereign; He does very well without us. Truly, as The Lord Jesus said , and I paraphrase, “ Many are busied in many things, but the monks and nuns have chosen the better part.” Sitting at His Feet in prayer.

The last year (july / 2019) I had a beautiful 1 month experience (to be carthusian father and know the carthusian life) in the Charterhouse of San José de Córdoba. Was one of the most important and beauty experiences of my life, I was very happy there. Maybe I will enter the next year or 2022.

What would you think if you heard a child say he wants to be a Priest at only 7 or 8 years of age?
Or a girl that wants to become a nun and join monestery at the age of 13 ?
Everyone has a right for their own wishes and/or opinion
Is not a rule you or anyone or everyone or someone has to live by.
You can't forbid these children their final wishes if they are sure
Why would you forbid someone who has a calling
You can choose a different path

Antonija Juric but can't you give up pleasure without isolating yourself? wouldn't it be more of a real sacrifice? Jesus was God incarnate and when he was in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights he could have changed the stones into bread but he didn't. But when he was out of the wilderness he multiplied a small few loaves of bread and fish and fed 5000 men not counting the women and children.

Even if people wanted a life of silent contemplation, I cannot imagine why people want to live so many hours alone - eating alone, doing mass alone, working alone, rarely or never seeing family or friends - locked away in a cell. I cannot imagine why anybody would do this and it seems clear why there are so few young ones willing to race to such suffering.

Yes, the broken sleep is very difficult, and the same routine, day in and day out, can lead to a kind of depression. Just one free day in a week would make all the difference, but the Carthusian life has no such respite to look forward to; except for a little free time during Christmas and Easter Days. The Trappist life is pretty much the same, except for the lack of broken sleep. The Carthusian schedule was up at 12 midnight for prayer in chapel until 2AM, then back to bed until 4 AM. Then back to chapel and Mass, after some private prayer in one’s cell. Of course, the brothers had a different schedule because they were involved with the physical needs of the monastery. But, as far as I remember, all priests and brothers were up at midnight until 2 AM .

They've been doing it for almost 1700 years so yup, also they do in fact expend a lot of energy. Italy had a program where prisoners coming off a long bid could spend the last leg of their sentence in a monastery. One man couldn't keep up so he broke out went to the nearest town and asked them to put him back in prison. Monks work in various roles in a monastery, and their day is filled with work, study, prayer, worship and sometimes depending upon the community fellowship.

It's not 'jail', because they are consenting to it, and can leave if they wish. A convict is not consenting to solitude, and cannot leave.

A lot of people admire monks but not many would like to live so. That seems to me a little hypocritical

@@konyvnyelv. You can admire someone for a task that perhaps you know you may have not the strength or character for.
Just as I can admire a NFL quarterback for his athleticism, for the sacrifice, and hard work it took to get him to achieve that level of competition. Admiring those qualities does not make me a hypocritical for me not wanting to go to try outs to become an NFL quarterback.

The gospel and the example Jesus showed us is not to flee from the world but how to engage the world in spiritual truth such as grace, peace, love, long suffering, gentleness, kindness, compassion and etc. It's easy to live this virtues or to keep to the rules in close enclosures but what about those who do not know Christ can they still show those virtues as it is easy to keep them in their monastic life. I am rather reformed in my belief and I am also not claiming that they are bad or selfish people but what about Faith in Christ and also spreading the truth of the Gospel message to others?

that is because you do not believe in the Mystical Body of Christ - The Catholic Church. A body has many parts with its own unique function, the arms are the active apostolic function reaching out to the world through active works while the heart is the contemplative apostolic function where grace is generated every pump of the heart, and that grace is like blood to support the arm.

the whole elegy to silence thing in the dark is creepy. Imagine it:
A bunch of middle-aged to old men singing some holy, very religious song in complete darkness.
Just think if you stayed there and saw them doing that.
    Nope.
    Konnichiwa.
