Basically I saw it like this: In the world of TLOU, relationships as close and as strong as Riley and Ellie's was are rarer to find than platinum itself. Which makes sense since it's the goddamn mushroom-zombie apocalypse. When more than 95% of the human population consists of half-insane, cynical perverted assholes of all genders who're more likely to slit your throat than shake your hand, it's gotta be quite the feeling when you finally find that one someone who actually thinks the world of you and treats you as another human being rather than a temporary and disposable means to an end. And as such it must be a downright terrifying feeling to even think of having to say goodbye to that one and only person who can even make you smile anymore in such a shitty-ass world. So when Riley sacrificed her dream of joining the Fireflies to stay with Ellie, she clearly showed her love for her since sacrifice is largely a part of showing love for someone else. After that, you could only imagine the amount of relief Ellie felt knowing that she could keep her best and only friend, and so she just gave in to her feelings, romantic or not, doesn't really matter, and went in for the kiss. In my honest opinion, I'd lean more towards Ellie actually being gay if not bi-curious/full-on bisexual. But like I said it doesn't really matter since the whole message of the DLC wouldn't have changed at all even if it were two boys, a girl and a boy, or just a straight up platonic relationship. Anyway, it really shouldn't even be this much of an issue at the end of the day because, just like with most forms of art, it's all open to interpretation.
Exactly, if you ever watched the movie Let The Right One In, the main characters Oscar and Eli ( a castrated boy turned vampire who resembles a young girl) love each deeply. The love the two characters have for each other is genuine because they were all they had in a world full of hopelessness
I really have no issue with Ellie being gay. I can't believe that in the year 2014 this is still an issue. I have no problem with gay people and I commend Naughty Dog for sticking to their guns and going through with this when Ellie as a character was so well loved in such a short time. It adds a dynamic to an already dynamic character. At first we thought she lost a friend but we find that Riley was much more than that, she loved Riley and that loss is as strong as Joel losing his daughter Sara. As for the Last of Us ending, I enjoyed it very much and though it seems selfish, I would have done the same thing. The abrupt ending after Joel lies to Ellie worked well because I wanted more and ending like that seemed cruel and I think Ellie sensed Joel was lying. Last of Us and Left Behind were masterpieces to me and I now consider this to be my favorite game of all time. Props to Ashley Johnson for bringing Ellie to life. She seems really cool and down to Earth and I hope to see her return as Ellie one day.
***** It's messed up that it is actually 2014 and both race and sexuality are still an issue. I don't see how people are so narrow minded and hateful for something as trivial as what color you are or what your sexual preferences are. I look at it this way, I'm white, when i lived in Philadelphia my best friend who was more like a brother was Mexican and Black and his family treated me and my brothers and sister as one of their own and mines treated him and his like one of ours. My cousin just had a kid with a Laotian guy who is way cool and my family really likes him, he's good to my cousin, he takes care of his kid and he doesn't get into trouble. I don't care what you do with whoever and whatever skin color you are, if you're a good, honest decent member of society that's all I ask of anything and I try to return the favor. I think the human race finally needs to get over this. From the beginning of Mankind trivial shit like this has always caused nothing but problems and pain for so many people. People shouldn't have to be cautious or afraid of who they are. there's worse things out there in this world that get less attention than race or sexuality. People are raised to hate for no reason, some just fear what they don't understand.
Mak Tek What about this game is pedophile-ish? If people found this game to give off a pedophile vibe then they need to think about why they personally thought that. Because every normal person saw a harmless kiss that was over in a second.
***** you think two kids kissing sexually is normal, YOU need to analyse yourself. If you think there wasn't something uncomfortable about that I wouldn't want someone like you near my kids.
I hate American slang. I have heard the boring insults turds like you spew before, I rate your comeback 1/10. join the army and become a man finally, not a disgrace to your family; which you clearly are.
Gotsta love Ashley Johnson. Quirky, fun, and real. Best of luck to her and her career. Thief looks pretty good. Will have to check that out. Great interviews as always. Keep 'em comin', Greg and the rest of the crew.
Ashley Johnson is so fucking rad, for me, cooler than Ellen Page, and I love Ellen Page! I hope to see Ashley Johnson play as a memorable character in another game, but I still want to see more of Ellie from 'The Last of Us'!
Nathan B Ashley literally just said that it was up to interpretation and that the kiss had more to do with desperation than literal sexual attraction. I get that Neil is a writer but no one knows more than the person playing as her. Neil also said that ellie hates joel at the ending(which is certainly a minority opinion) so I wouldn't take what he says as fact.
***** Neil has said in several interviews and on a Reddit AMA that she is indeed gay. But he says people are open to their own interpretations of the story. Truthfully, it doesn't matter either way - especially in that world. You find someone you love, you stick with them no matter what sex they are. But Ellie did have romantic feelings for Riley according to Neil.
Adam Powell He's the writer of The Last Of Us and Left Behind. Just because what he was going for with the ending didn't appeal to everyone (Ellie hating Joel) doesn't mean it's somehow not a fact. I personally liked the ending but definitely didn't like it when Neil said Ellie now hates Joel, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean I'm going to deny it as what it is. He wrote these characters, he wrote the ending, what he says about it is obviously fucking fact lol...
Ashley Johnson, HAHA! She seems to be a fun person to talk whit. And i really love her answer on the topic if Ellie is gay or not. Heres what i took out of it... Ellie and Riley fall in love. But in this world you do get a lot closer to every person you know because there is that danger that the next day they wont be around. There is a treath around every corner. So you get close to people.. And when you get close to someone it's a lot easyer to find love. And i think that it does not matter what sex the other one is. Your not gay, bosexual or straight. You just fall in love... So yea, Ellie isn't really waht i would call Gay or Bisexual. This is love... A Kind of love i don't think you can put under any kind of category. So she answered this question about this very complex topic very well. And to be honest, that scene where Ellie and Riley kissed... That might be one of the most romantic scenes in any video game i have ever seen.
Holy shit, I love that her natural authentic voice is exactly the same as Ellie's. I can literally close my eyes and imagine Ellie speaking. Shout out to Ashley for doing a phenomenal job giving the character life. Can't wait for the next game.
iownalx23 No, you only had to kill the one. But I shot all of them, because I hate doctors and dentists, and in this context they were even worse than normal!
Greg asked her what she's working on and what to expect her in coming up and she somewhat dodged the question with a big smile on her face. She doesn't have a very good poker face...
Even if Joel let the fire flies take Ellie. It's not even a guarantee that they can make a cure and if they do, the military was out for them. Another thing, Marleen even said that they barely made it to that hospital. So not a lot of chance that they will return to civilization.
I'm a very excited for this generation . All of Hollywood and Broadway along with major record labels could go away , but because of innovations in technology and cutaway business strategies artists and entrapeneurs will have avenues for creative freedom
The way I see it, I think I know what Ellie's thinking. If your alone in this world and there's no one else in your life, your gonna find love with any gender. Her best friend was Riley and really no one else. We aren't in a zombie apocalypse and have plenty of options with the other gender, but in The Last of Us's world, you lucky if you friend lives the year. It would have happened if it was a dude or girl, we saw the bond happening with Sam.
The Last of Us 2 should be the fire flies hunting down Joel and Ellie, and you play mainly as another character whose mission is to kill Joel and capture/kill Ellie for the cure. That would be quite interesting imo. Especially since I love Joel and Ellie lol. That would be an emotionally twisting game, potentially, depending on the outcome.
I don't think many fans would be happy to return to the world of TLOU only to play all of it or the majority of it as other characters (not Joel and Ellie). There's been so much emphasis on their story, to return to the world but start from scratch with new characters seems a bit silly especially when you already have these two dynamic characters who are beloved. Now of course there wasn't like some official poll done or something that tells us how exactly every fan feels about this I'm just going based off of how I feel and seeing comments on other videos saying like, "if we play as new characters in TLOU2 like Neil Druckmann said could happen, I wouldn't be interested." I don't think Naughty Dog would go that route anyway to be honest, who knows.
LogicalThinker7991 Yea. Id rather them skip a few yrs and make ellie a few yrs older and more mature. This time she finds out about her past and why she is immune and finds out joel lied to her. Ellie is just to great of a character to just ditch and leave.
I kinda dig it but it narrows the vision for the overall concept of the game. The introduction of Riley proves that there are more characters that can take center stage in their horrid world. I would love to see a family face the challenges the virus causes. So set the story about 20 years before Joel and Ellie's story. Marlene's history is unknown so maybe it can include her and give us more background into how the fire flies got started.
Earl Watkins Not really. Riley wasn't center stage. Without Ellie I really don't think people would have been interested in the DLC. We played the DLC to experience more of Ellie and her story and Riley happened to be part of that story. I'm not saying that Riley wasn't important in the DLC, clearly she was but she wasn't center stage. I don't think the DLC would have been successful or well-received by the fans had Joel/Ellie not been in it. That's why I think ND will not throw away Joel and Ellie for the sequel (these are two characters who people are really invested in and ND spent so much time on them over three years!) if they were to I don't think there would be any point in an actual sequel, better off going with the new IP in my opinion.
LogicalThinker7991 i actually wouldn't mind new characters. i Thought the story and the ending was amazing and i don't really want anything to mess with that. New characters, same world and a equally amazing story would be prefect for a sequel in my opinion :)
Naughty Dog did an AMA on reddit so if you guys have questions about tlou that havent been answered as of yet, Neil and Bruce probably answered it there.
I haven't played left behind yet,I plan to get it this Friday, however I did play the main game more than 3 times. It's an amazing game and I can't believe we still live in a society where being gay is an issue. If Ellie is gay so what! Who gives a shit?! I love this game and this story and it's characters regardless of sexuality or gender. LAST OF US 2! Please naughty dog!
Honestly who cares that Ellen page is gay? People are always preaching about how being gay isn't a big deal yet gay celebrities constantly make it a big deal that they're gay.
1. Ellie, from the last of us, kissed a girl... and Ellen Page been lesbian... Comments saying Ellie is Ellen page or made in her image. Is that coincidence? don't think so. 2. Huge question... in "The last of Us" at the ending, when Ellie wake up with the hospital clothing, the game never presented the most controversial conversation that would in fact lead to a really high probable inconsistent of the ending conversation. Its a common set of preoccupation that would have leaded the conversation to a different ending. How come Ellie had never ask her self about: a. how she got that clothing? b. who changed he cloth? c. what was that cloth for, and where does it comes from? d. why that cloth didn't cover her and didn't kept her underwear? e. did she got attacked, or even abused? f. etc. She most have freaked out, and become annoying asking. Those questions and the answers should have made her suspect that she was at a hospital, at least. Such questions should have given a huge turn on the game ending, specially because even if Ellie is young, she use to live on a place populated with humans that must have had hospital or something like it. As a result, Ellie should have either witness Joel's suspicious silence to her questions, or inconsistent with answers. Making her have a complete different ending.
Question: What did you think of Ashley's response to the gay question? Yes or No? (also, props for asking straight up like that!) Personally, I doesn't really matter if she's gay... but it brought a whole lot of publicity to Naughty Dog, maybe an unnecessary storyline or a just another example of how ND don't give a shit what people think! My favourite theory is how people say if Riley was a boy, it'd still be the same and no one would care as much, it'd probably also have less impact but what can you do?
I Love Ashely/Ellie, please do more game characters! I was shock with the kiss scene but I thought I lover as a daughter or something just the same. Probably the 2 characters in my hole 30 something years of gaming that I care the most for...Ellie and Joel.
I love Ashley!
Ashley's such an adorable person ugH
I would marry Ashley Johnson

Holy shit... How did I not make that connection
she had, but the scene had to be cut, it is in the dvd I think

Ashley is awesome. Hope she does more voice acting for the video games.
Gotsta love Ashley Johnson. Quirky, fun, and real. Best of luck to her and her career.
Thief looks pretty good. Will have to check that out.
Great interviews as always. Keep 'em comin', Greg and the rest of the crew.
she acts so much like Ellie too .....:)
ellie is like ashley not the other way around
melqior masala not necessarily, people change for characters, but Ashley apparently didnt have too.
God Ashley is such a cutie.
Brian Korpacz hey we have the same profile pic 😂gotta love Ellie
Ashley is so pretty and adorable. And that voice. She's perfect, god dammit. Give me her. Please.
i fell in love with ellie when she said " what you say goes "
Ashley is cool and have a great voice.
I think her voice is really nice idk why
AShley Johnson made me want to become a voice actor! ^_^
I just wanna wear the cool motion capture suits and be a voice actor XD
hey how's your progress on becoming a voice actor? I just got a gig to voice a playable character in an upcoming indie game called Crime Wars.
o that's cool Saint
I watched Greg's opening "monologue" Brian's bit, than fast forwarded to Ashley Johnson.
SMart move... That Thief dev guy was pretty dull.
Same here I found Thief like the guy who made it to be a pretty dull game. But I'm insanely hooked to the Last of Us and Ashley Johnson.
She knew about the last of us part II at this point!!!!!
Hell no she didn't! They've been working on it for four moths just now. It wouldn't have been more than an idea at that time.
How does this video even have dislikes best ign video ever Ashley Johnson and Greg Miller did amazing.
Ashley Johnson is so fucking rad, for me, cooler than Ellen Page, and I love Ellen Page! I hope to see Ashley Johnson play as a memorable character in another game, but I still want to see more of Ellie from 'The Last of Us'!
Love it when Ashley is on the show. She is always a good interview and entertaining to watch. Great show everyone!
Ellen page comes out around the same time we find out Elli is gay... Coincendence... I think not.
*****
Yes, she is. The writer of her character and the story said she is. Sorry to ruin that for ya

Close your eyes and it's Ellie :3
Ashely Johnson is amazing! One of the best down to earth interviews I've seen.
Great interview with Ashley Johnson! Nice to get her take on the best game and DLC of this generation.
Ashley is awesome

Ashley Johnson, so adorbz
I could hear her talk all day
ELLIE, ELLIE, ELLIE! ❤
Same ❤️❤️❤️ I'm FANGIRLING too hard just searching up "Ashley Johnson"
Ashley Johnson is fantastic she could be on every episode and I wouldn't even be mad
Holy shit, I love that her natural authentic voice is exactly the same as Ellie's. I can literally close my eyes and imagine Ellie speaking. Shout out to Ashley for doing a phenomenal job giving the character life. Can't wait for the next game.
I'm surprised Greg didn't bring up Ashley's weird coffee mug at least once
Me too.
This show is awesome I watch it every week :)
Ashley so genuine! Them blue eyes!!!
I love the part with the magazine in the car. haha
I love naughty dog, but I have to say that their 'swing and miss' game is Uncharted 3.
Tell that to Metacritic
Same. Really didn't care about 'Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception' Was good, but was just "okay". Didn't feel very Uncharted to me.
that game ws great. bt ehrn compared to 2. 2 was better for sure.
Uncharted 3 was really annoying compared to Uncharted 2. I personally hated its puzzles
Obviously it wasn't the best Uncharted out of the 3, but calling a great game for its time a "swing and miss" is just silly imo.
Ellie didn't know she was going to die at the end, that's why she was talking about joel teaching her guitar "after this" soooo yea...
I feel like the way Ashley answered the questions about whether or not Ellie is gay is exactly the same way that I felt about it. Very well said, too.
I am a monster! I actually killed all the doctors in that room 21:36
i think you had to. like the game forced you to.
Not really, you just have to kill the one that is blocking your path. Everyone else I killed because I was mad
Maigels
oh.
i didnt even know that there was a choice to leave the nurses. I killed all three immediately
iownalx23 No, you only had to kill the one. But I shot all of them, because I hate doctors and dentists, and in this context they were even worse than normal!
I don't know why, but whatever Ashley's doing with her hands at 16:50 makes me crack up.
Greg asked her what she's working on and what to expect her in coming up and she somewhat dodged the question with a big smile on her face. She doesn't have a very good poker face...
I just smiled because I saw Ellie the greatest character in media
Every time I hear her talk, I hear Terra (Teen Titans) first and then I think about Ellie. XD
For me the Eidos did a great job of bringing back this game.... They improved the game without deleting the feel of the classical thief series :)
She's adorable..
I like this show.
2 Brian Altano bits!!! Hell yes! Great show.
She's stunning!
If you pause the video in certain points, Stephane Roy will look like Gru.
Even if Joel let the fire flies take Ellie. It's not even a guarantee that they can make a cure and if they do, the military was out for them. Another thing, Marleen even said that they barely made it to that hospital. So not a lot of chance that they will return to civilization.
her voice is awesome
i close my eyes and i see Ellie
The TLOU Interview was amazing...
Boy, 2014 was a different for sure
Ashley Johnson is perfection!
TY ! u made ellie the best character of all games i have ever seen best game ever :D
Since Naughty Dog is supposedly brainstorming a "The Last of Us 2", I can't wait if they ask her to voice for it again :D
yep they did thank god :D
close your eyes and imagine Elli just fucking up this Interview so awesome sauce like.
Ashley's voice and appearance is so fucking gorgeous
I'm a very excited for this generation . All of Hollywood and Broadway along with major record labels could go away , but because of innovations in technology and cutaway business strategies artists and entrapeneurs will have avenues for creative freedom

I like how Ashley tries to not mention about Tlou part 2
Best episode of Up at Noon
Greg, you're the best!
Greg miller is awesome
I really liked Bioshock 2. Not as much as the other two games, but still a good game.
I love her
11:21 to 25:30 Ashley Johnson interview
That was a fantastic show.
She looks like naomi's sister :)
i think they are working on the last of us 2.
Salute TheVulcanSalute people.
She's so lovely

Naughty Dog did an AMA on reddit so if you guys have questions about tlou that havent been answered as of yet, Neil and Bruce probably answered it there.
"You're probably in pre production of TLOU 2"
"no"
OBJECTION!!
Wow. Little Ashley Johnson. Look at her now.
Love you guys. I fell in love with ellie right away. Sassy spunky little girl. Of course!
OMG ASHLEY JOHNSON!!!! *SCREAMS LIKE FANGIRL*
Ashley you are just gorgeous...
Haha Ashley Johnson makes for a good guest.
SHE IS SO CUTE ASHLEY!!!
This gurl is the incarneted cuteness
I haven't played left behind yet,I plan to get it this Friday, however I did play the main game more than 3 times. It's an amazing game and I can't believe we still live in a society where being gay is an issue. If Ellie is gay so what! Who gives a shit?! I love this game and this story and it's characters regardless of sexuality or gender. LAST OF US 2! Please naughty dog!
I agree, somewhat
I just realised Ashley Johnson is in the avengers
She's the best, I love her !!!!
Wish I could have got a spoiler alert on the house of cards recap.Happened so fast I couldn't stop the video in time. smh
This is so great
Honestly who cares that Ellen page is gay? People are always preaching about how being gay isn't a big deal yet gay celebrities constantly make it a big deal that they're gay.

How come Ellie had never ask her self about:
a. how she got that clothing?
b. who changed he cloth?
c. what was that cloth for, and where does it comes from?
d. why that cloth didn't cover her and didn't kept her underwear?
e. did she got attacked, or even abused?
Lmao god I love Ashley Johnson she's so random XD
Ashley Johnson is so goofy I love it! haha.
Man when she said the last of us is done, that had me pretty sad..
Question: What did you think of Ashley's response to the gay question?
Yes or No?
(also, props for asking straight up like that!)
Personally, I doesn't really matter if she's gay... but it brought a whole lot of publicity to Naughty Dog, maybe an unnecessary storyline or a just another example of how ND don't give a shit what people think!
Ashley is beyond gorgeous.
D'awww, greg and ashley look cute together.
For me, it was when Ellie cussed out Bill for handcuffing her. I was like, "This chick has balls!"
