500 Gallon Plywood Aquarium Is Finished! But Was It Worth It?

- The new 500 gallon DIY plywood aquarium is complete! In the video, I finish some exterior work, fix the leak, work on the plumbing and more! I am so excited to finally have this tank ready for fish. Also in today's video, I talk about the cost to build a tank like this, and itemize the full aquarium build in case you're looking to do something similar.
This is my first time building a plywood aquarium, and I'm bound to make small mistakes along the way. If you're looking for a true "how to" video, I'd look up some of the Fishtubers who have more experience with these builds. I'm confident that this tank will all work out fine, but just wanted to throw out that caveat.

Excited with your progress! Watching from Philippines :)
Very well done, Troy. I'm sure this is such a huge accomplishment to get this all done. Everything looks great! I've been following this video series since the beginning!
Thanks man! Really appreciate the support
Since you have a mitre saw already, stick a little quarter round trim in the front of the tank, it'll hide that silicon line! Tank looks awesome!
Kudos for doing such hard projects to encourage the h9bby. ❤ .
Nothing can beat the sicce syncra💪
👊🏻👊🏻
Epic build. the only things I would fix is how the lights form three triangular rays with dark spots in between
Let’s go!
Awesome job 🤙
Thanks man!
The aquarium looks great. The trim really does make a big difference. The tank is so deep I don’t think you’d even notice the bubbles if you have to go the air stone route. I feel a little bad for the juvenile Acara though. I have a feeling they’re going to get downgraded to a smaller tank soon.
Thanks! Plan is to keep the little guys in there with the new ones. They’re likely big enough to be okay
Lovely
Very nice.
Yes 🎉😂😊
So big and you’re not a pro you’re just a regular guy like us!
make it salt water with those sweet lights you have. check out red sea overflow box on ideas how to get rid of gurgling sound . that size of tank id out 3 wave makers
You should of got a GFI outlet instead of a normal one but great tank I love it
Cut the trim corners at a 45°
How many hours did it take?
I know that was you lol I wasn't sure 😅
wouldnt it be cheaper to make it all out of glass in this case?
Would change the build significantly, but would likely still cost more to do all glass
this is appositely insanly nice looking good job exited for updates!
That's an incred price for that size of a tank. I'm inspired, thank you!
Looks great Troy 👌🏼👌🏼
Great video and awesome tank! One grand cheaper than a new 180 is crazy tho, might have to try building something myself in the future 😅
great looking tank!
Hell Ya Troy! I'm super excited also. The blues look great in there with their fabulous scape. I can't wait to see the big boys in there myself. I hope you show some transfers also. I love how your finished out the doors and trim. Looks sleek. It fits the room which is perfect for filming but also there is lots of room left for family living and functions. What show pieces all the tanks are. Congratulations on completing this massive build and enjoy. Love and Peace.
Thank you, really appreciate it!
The end result is stunning! Great job, Troy and thank you for sharing this journey! cheers.
Thanks for watching!
Looks good man
Great work. You can use foam pads for sound damping. I did that with my 240 gal tank and things got quite.
Good job, live and learn. All part of the journey.
Always!

I might have to do a project for this guy. He’s getting huge! About 34 inches now

Amazing tank an so cheap. You should be really proud of the work you've done.
Can not wait to see it with the sting Ray and the fish from your 180 gallon.
Plus already looking forward to what you're going to do with the 180.
Well done , it’s a absolute beauty can’t wait to see it finished with all the fish
Thank you!
Nice
Congrats on a job well done couldn't wait for this one looking forward to seeing the stingray 🎉👍👍
love it! nice work!
Tank looks good
Turned out great! Costs are not that bad either!
Love your videos bro❤ keep going with your channel
Thank you!
Your wife is jacked…💪🏼
I was gonna say the same!! Lmao😅
True
She definitely don't miss gym day 😂
Your wife is a Saint,IN OUR HOME MY HUSBAND IS,P.HES LOVE MY HOBBY BUT AT A DISTANCE.HE LOOKS AT THE FISH.I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 45 years. give up the hobby as we retired and traveled and as soon as we were homebound permanently prior to the pandemic, I started up again promising not to go more than 135 in any room .WE NOW HAVE 6 tanks that WE ENJOY.ALONG WITH OUR 1/2 average pond of 60 koi.❤THEY ARE 3 years old and some are 18 inch’s starting at 3 inch .cost to feed about 200 a year as MICHIGAN WE NEVER FEED IN COLD MONTHS. Obviously the pond is not crystal clear but they come to the deck when the food comes out like a puppy. remember as we grow older and you’re just a young man our priorities can change..for now GOD NEVER Promises us a tomorrow so enjoy what makes you happy.even a 10gal can be so much joy
The "I"m in debt up to my eyeballs" had me cracking up. Tank is sick!
Hell yeah! The finished product looks absolutely amazing and the skills and confidence you must have after that will be awesome and well deserved!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
The 500 gallon tank is looking pretty good thanks for the update video can’t wait till the next video with the fish in it and the stingray 👍
Finally its DONE! Great job Troy its looking awesome
Thanks so much!
Your wife is support you.... awesome
The tank & sump look great. You took your time on this project and it shows. Hope this system lasts you for years to come.
Finally finish. The tank looks fabulous. You can pay more than that for a custom tank and a much smaller tank. Great job.
King of DIY would approve
Your wife is jacked
It looks so clean now with the framing.
🤙🏼🤙🏼
Fired Up Response to my comment on needing an update, I thought I was lucky enough for reply. I’ve enjoyed watching this build and can’t wait to see the future inhabitants.
Thanks for following along! 👊🏻👊🏻
“I’m in debt up to my eyeballs” 🤣🤣🤣 Bro I remember that commercial from like 20 years ago!!! How did you remember that??? And what was that commercial about??? Excellent find!!!
👍🏻😎Incredible tank!
Thanks! 👍
Show us awesome dude salute to you and your brothers gave me a lot of ideas to play with. 💪🏿💯
What an accomplishment, super impressive. Rambo approved.
Thank you!
ive wanted to do this for YEARS.. waaay back.. 2002 or so.. it was all over MFK.. its always been something ive wanted to do. congrats man, looks great
This here my friend is exactly what you want your build to look like!!... I absolutely hate when I see them make it too big and it ends needing wood in the front for brace... An aquarium should be 100% visible glass/acrylic, clean with NO OBSTRUCTIONS.... Perfect.. great job ❤
Thank you, appreciate that!
Congrats... Looks Great.. About to start mine but I am worried about one thing... My own patience! Good job excited to see the fish going in. Kc
Awesome. Best of luck!
Looking amazing, waiting to see how lights come out. I think u many need to add more. Let's c how it goes..but so far amazing 😍
Thanks! I actually only have the lights on at about 5% so should be all good
Beautiful plywood aquarium I just subscribed worth the wait
Awesome, thank you!
So cool definitely wanting a tank this big one day
🤔 You could stick foam on the inside of the sump doors to deaden the sounds
wow your wife back is ripped! oh nice job on the tank too. thanks for the price break down!
lmao dont feel bad about that outlet. the electrical company i work for probably would have tried to charge you $1-2k for setting that up!
Good 👍
Sangat mempesona
Awsome finished product! I can't wait to see it fully stocked!!
Thanks Melvin!
After months of patience and your Hardwork the end result is fantastic bro..I must say you and your wife must hit the gym regularly since both of you are in good shape .
Can't wait for the next update regarding the transfer of fishes❤🎉😊😊😊
Thanks as always for following along and for the support ✊🏻✊🏻
@@CichlidBros ur welcome
That’s awesome bro can’t wait to see it stocked 💯💯💪🏿
You and me both! Thanks for watching!
Looks great but the front right silicone is abit rough maybe trim off excess if possible
Awesome tank man!! Looks super good!!! 👍 😊
Great to see you livin’ the dream! Keep us inspired and posted.
Thank you! Will do!
Awesome job, must definitely trim the excess sealant. And an extra wave maker will give you the water agitation to create ripple effect for your lighting 👍☹️
Nice bro..👍
🎉Great 👍
Now it's a great time to ask you a ? If you had to charge 1 and only 1 person / customer that hired you to build them exactly the same DIY Plywood aquarium what would you charge the new owner? P.S. Looking AWESOME!!!
Haha that’s a great question. I probably wouldn’t take the job since I’ve only done one so far. But would be expensive basing on hours alone lol
Love the look and congratulations on a job well done. I just became a subscriber so I check out the other build videos prior to this. I also have a small channel feel free to check it out Capital City Aquatics
Thanks for the sub!
Amazing job, especially for a first time...random question but is your house your forever home? Lol can't even imagine trying to move all your tanks, not even sure if this 500 gal can be moved outta here...incredible job on the build!
Thanks! And yep I plan to be here for many years. Would have to dismantle the tank if I moved
I’m definitely loving this and will take your ideas once’s the new home come highly appreciate you for this. Love the Chicago flag 🔥
That’s awesome, best of luck!!
Sooo Awesome!!! wow way to keep going on such a huge project. It looks great!! and your super chick is ripped lol I loved watching your journey. It's totally a dream tank man!! I have a 150 that I want to take with me to my new apt. but I'm not sure if the floor can handle the weight...I'm hoping i can get under the floor and reinforce the floor. crossing my fingers. thanks again it was a great journey. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for following along! Really appreciate it!
Awesome job. Looks like an amazing addition to your beautiful setup!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Awesome! Really looks great.
Thank you! Cheers!
So happy for you!!! Congrats
Thank you!
Here it is!!!!
this is awesome! just curious, could you have put glass on the sides or would have been too difficult?
Thanks! You definitely can. I would consider it if I ever built another
Thats awesome!
I like to tell visitors ive made the stands myself when they ask but to say youve built the tabk az well too is amazing!
Right on!
Fantastic job....
Congratulations bro...way to go...cant wait to see all the fishes in...
Thanks 👍
Big congrats on completing this tank!
Thank you!
Awesome video. What are you going to do about lids on the tank?
Will be making some DIY lids this week before fish move over
You can use foam in your stand to reduce noise and you can get pipe insulation for your drain lines both will greatly reduce noise for low cost.
Awesome project thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Congrats on banner 18 🎉
I love it . Good job by you .
Its a amazing tank. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Super cool… go cubs😫!
good price on glass
Stingray is gonna be sweet in there.
Have completed a similar project - 1,700 litres. self build filter and lights, overflow with drip water feed. A lot of work but satisfying. next job is to build a stud wall around so it is in it's own room with viewing window.
Discus and other amazon fish very happy.
That water was actually fairly clear without washing the sunset gold. My 3 bags in a 55 needed to be yanked and wash again. Finally cleared up.
Yo! Just wondering if it would be possible to put marble peacock cichlids in a 330 litre tank? If so how many and what are good tank mates? Or could I put one as a centrepiece?
If you come across this, please send your prayers for my physical and mental healing. Thank you for your support.
Considering the cost difference the amount you saved is well worth it. Not to mention all the knowledge you gained from building it. My thing is, if you have to move, how are you going to get it out?
