This is one of the best plywood tank tutorials I've ever come across 👍. The frame and base look sturdy AF , plus it has a really professional look. There are soooo many big tank builds on UA-cam, from concrete to acrylic and some pretty ugly looking plank & beam ensembles - this one nails what i want , plus is in $AUD - ( no trying to convert US$ or trying to source materials that are difficult to get here) Can't wait for the next instalment ✨✨✨✨✨💥
Yeah I’m not very impressed with the aesthetic of most plywood tanks on UA-cam. In my opinion, a glass tank is the ideal, but if out of the budget, I want to make a tank that looks as sleek as possible. Sometimes it seems plywood tank builders , are TRYING to make their tanks into chunky, black boxes!?!
You did good. Great job. Loved the diagram :) I was a bit concerned at first when you had just the legs there but at the 2:51 marker you came through and explained the additional pieces and how they will take some of the load. Not sure why I was concerned as this isn't your first rodeo. Thanks for sharing again. You have a way of keeping the content short and to the point while also explaining it and having fun.
This is awesome!!! I actually have my glass to build an almost same size plywood tank for my Dovii! I have watched a heap of videos on the subject, but yours, I think, will give me the inspiration to make a start! It's great to see an Aussie (and fellow Queenslander!) doing a build like this! And I love your Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo at the end, as well!
Look out ! Careful there! I’ve lived in Mission Beach , right on the border, and now in Coffs Harbour, but I was born in Cronulla NSW!! BTW. Reggie is a arsehole!
@australianaquarist Uh oh! Conflict of interest there haha... I should have left it just as fellow Aussie! Love your work, anyway, and look forward to seeing your plywood tank come together.
That’s exactly how I started doing plywood tanks. Large and thick panes of glass are expensive, and when I built my first tank, I stripped the long glass sides from a 7 x 2, and 4 x 2 aquarium, and used plywood for the base.
That's how you start to build a stand and aquarium, you could park a truck on that thing, and it wouldn't flex 1/16th of an inch. Just came upon this and I for one will be looking forward to further videos and the progression of this build.
Hi Adam, glad you put a middle support on your stand. I see a lot of people on UA-cam that built 8ft long stands with no middle supports. Stand looks amazing. Well done
@@australianaquarist if you wanted a sump under could you not just "beef up" the wood used? ie. 2x10" instead of 2x6? or do we feel the center support is a must??
Mate loving the build 💪and all your videos in general. Been a dream of mine to do a “Perth Metro Reef” aquarium at home. Seeing your build and collecting videos has reignited the flame. Keep em coming (from WA)
You’ve got a cracker of an orange half half damselfish down there! Team him up with the Western Talma Butterfly and you’ve got a beautiful display tank!
Crap! I wouldn’t have thought you’d have access to those in Hawaii! Can’t wait to get back to Hawaii. I was there 38 years ago! But I think this visit would be a bit different. Plenty of tropical flower farms to visit for work and reefs to dive for fun?!
@ you definitely gotta comeback to Hawaii a lot has changed if diving is your you probably want to come to the big island that’s island I live on and all the major nurseries are on this island also
@808beastsplayground one day I will. I remembered being in the shallow overly warm water of Honolulu bay. Very sandy and shallow. Night markets, rainbow coloured snow cones and a macaw on my shoulder . I was 10
Heck yessss I love your plywood aquarium build info! It's so darn helpful!!! I definitely want to build one of these someday, even if it's just a small tank for a betta it'd still be rad and fun!❤
@ the dream is a big reef tank, but I gotta wait until I have my own space because I don't think my dad (who lives with me) would trust a homemade giant aquarium! 😅
@ That’s the thing once I’ve knocked off getting back on the tools is a hard task 🤣 But maybe next year is the year for it. I just don’t have a good place to build it at home.
your my favourite marine aquarist now mate. i really appreciate ur videos and the massive knowledge u have for this beautiful hobby❤❤❤your videos are really pretty cool. Greetings from INDIA. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wow!… big call there! Thank you for your support. I’m really pleased you’re enjoying my videos. Actually this afternoon, I was reading up on butterflyfish, and was checking out the species from the Indian coastline, across to the Similan Islands in Thailand. There’s quite a few species that are really nice!
@ your most welcome bro. i usually didnt got any success particularly on butterfly fish . Today i got a new shipment from thailand which includes a blue ring angel, melon butterfly, purple tang , koran angel and a longnose butterfly. Lets see how they do in the tank. 😊😊😊😊😇
What’s the plan with the Melon Butterfly? Seriously consider keeping him separated and getting it feeding ( if it will ) on prepared foods before adding it to the tank. There’s a great MACNA presentation on UA-cam by Matt Peterson on Keeping Obligate Coralivore butterflies, and he goes into his attempts at keeping a variety of species. Definitely worth checking out.
Hey Piotr G’day from the Land DownUnder! In the words of Men at Work! Glad you enjoyed the video! Looking forward to hearing about your new tank build soon!
YES!! another build to fallow along. thanks for making this I am gonna do this some day, so this is very helpful. great size tank too. seems big enough to consider DIY but not TO BIG for our 1st go at it. cant wait till the next vid!
It’s the width. Clearly you can get 8 x 2’s as glass tanks pretty readily and cost effectively. But when that width goes to 4 ft, you start spending big dollars. I haven’t actually costed the tank up fully yet, but I’d guess a total of around $1200
Did you nix overlapping the glass on the back frame this time? I feel like I remember you doing that on the pulau reef tank. New stand is looking great!
Yeah with Palau I felt I needed to ensure the back wall was structurally braced. Being 900mm high, and overall larger, I felt the need for those little return walls, for keeping things square. I also was using tempered glass and couldn’t cut the side pieces, that were 1200mm long. This tank is smaller, shorter in glass height, and I’m more comfortable without the nib walls. I think ! We’ll see!
im just waiting for you to make another monster freshwater aquarium with some cool fish like mahseer's or some south American catfishes or some big frickin cichlids
@aaraadhyaandaakayaata shit! Is a Saratoga not cool!! I’m thinking of doing a collecting trip up to Rockhampton in central Queensland where they are found. It’s be great to fish/collect some indigenous leathery grunters , and fork tail catfish for the tank. I’m also thinking of combining in some turtles or maybe water dragons
@@australianaquarist i am so sorry , i meant what "other" cool fish might accompany the Saratoga , i and so sorry you have no idea , saratogas are insane no doubt about it . grunters sound awesome too , thank you so much for the reply
Good question, it’s up to you. It’s probably not great for filming, and the butterflies were a little scarce. Might be better next week after a break from these strong nor-easters
Ha ha don’t tempt me. Was down the river today, water was still high in nutrients from upwelling, and a bit cold. Visibility was ok but could be a lot better
Cringing mate when you held up the back wall with the other tank right behind. Great build though. Here in the UK that build would cost a stupid amount :( Why did I leave Australia :(
That parrot is the best thing ive seen.
your such a tease,,lol have to wait for the next video :)

I going to make one but with glass on all four sides and a plywood base. It will be used for my freshwater stingrays...
I bet thant's going to look cool. I have thought about FW sting rays more of a SW guy here but I bet that is going to be sweet! DO IT!! lol

Hey Matt
Do you want 1mm or 2mm pellets?
Exactly what i was waiting for a new (with your new filming equipment and gear) showcase on how to build a beginner plywood!
Brilliant.
I say… if you can handle. And I mean handle , a cordless drill, you can build this tank ! Go for it!
