- We are back in project mode this week as Billy brings you along for the installation of our new Rainman Watermaker. We found out years ago that having a watermaker is the single most important thing in being able to extend our time away from the dock and civilization. We went with the Rainman AC Electric naked high output model for many reasons but one of the main ones being that it is the same model we had aboard our last catamaran "Adrenaline" which worked incredibly well. Let us know if you have any questions about why we chose this one in the comments :)

Really great video of a well planned installation. A couple of comments/observations:
1. The RO mounting bracket is textured on the back for gluing so you don't have to use an intermediate plate if you don't want.
2. It's fine to share the intake through hull. Rainman doesn't like to compete for water though, so make sure it has plenty of flow available when making water.
3. If you use the Rainman before the 7 day autoflush timer cycle completes, the system will flush when you turn finish making water, then reset the timer for 7 days again. If the timer loses power for other reasons, on power resumption it will trigger a flush cycle and reset for 7 days again. You addressed these points, but it might not be clear to people.
People don't buy watermakers because water is "expensive" - they buy them so they don't have to go refill their tanks. Billy didnt' talk about it but it gives you FREEDOM to use water as you wish without worrying about when you might have to go somewhere and fill your tanks. Most boats have tanks that aren't large enough for extended times on the hook.
Want to take another shower? No problem? Want to wash the boat with fresh water? no problem. That's why people get watermakers.
Love your maintenance/install videos. The amount of research preparation is impressive. Plus, I know Bill loves doing them. We know as a team you two are fearless and never afraid of work. (Mountain Mist, whew). Much respect
Water Water everywhere and not a dwop to dwink ... Until now!!☺ Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘
Nice job looks professional me personally I would have had a factory to installed well they were building the boat
I have always built my own water makers from all standard off the shelf parts. I have a 7" color touchscreen plc controlling my water maker. For redundancy I have a engine driven high pressure pump. Whenever I am running the engine I can make water.
Merry Christmas to you all! May 2024 bring many more adventures for you all to share with us. Happy Sailing.
This is without a doubt the coolest water maker install I've seen on UA-cam. Great work.
Well done! The water maker gives you independence and freedom. We love ours as well. It makes the beauty of remote anchorages, extended stays and the ability to have some good luxuries instead of a camping feel. Laundry, showers and the lack of water anxiety is a making the life on your boat a home. Congratulations!
Billy has skills!
Billy completely dissembled and rebuilt a diesel engine on their previous catamaran. He did it in two or three days by himself - no help from anyone. Very impressive feat! He is to stranger to installing water makers. :¬) Webhead USA
@@webheadusa9377 - Yup ! That was the one that caused me to fall off my chair ! His ability with kite-surfing also blows my mind . (I used to surf when a bit younger .) take care, rh
Merry Christmas to you three, here’s to a special 2024 filled with adventure and fun
RO takes everything out of the water including things you need like fluoride and minerals. You can purchase packages that will add these necessities back to the water. For tank, water we also have a Waterdrop G2 Reverse Osmosis System under our galley sink for drinking and cooking water. We put hydrogen peroxide in our tank to inhibit bacteria growth in the tank.
Very interesting video, Billy, and Sierra. Appreciate you all, along with Jetty, showing us the whole installation, of the water maker, and how it operates. Even though, I was hoping to see You all sailing, I still enjoy watching your videos, more than watching my favorite sports team. Look forward to seeing LaurieSue, in her beauty, sailing the open waters soon. Until next time, safe travels!!
Great job . So neat and tidy it could have factory installed . Well done
I enjoy these type of videos. Quite involving task installing water makers, great job. Looks like the Seawind 1170 has plenty of working space for that size boat which makes it easier
Dear Billy you are a fair dinkum durrabangi legend pal - very informative 👍🇦🇺🏴☠️
I'm finally up to date on yalls videos! 🎉❤ it took so long to catch up and watch all the older ones! Lol Love that yall have stayed true to yourselfs and creative styles all these years!
Its crazy how yall look the same after all these years too! Hahah cheers and thanks as always for the endless entertainment! 🤙
I usually just put a carbon filter in line and run all fresh water from dockside just turn down pressure and purify that water before tank when you travel north
That doesn’t do anything for removing salt water.
Watching Sierra's expressions while Billy sliced a big hole in the boat was hilarious! 🤣😂
It's a NEW boat ! ! ! We aren't supposed to be cutting holes in it ! ! !
Merry Christmas too you and all, looks like a nice part of the World for it. All the best regards from here on the West Coast side of Australia 🌏🇦🇺🐨👽
Been watching for years Pre-pandemic !, I kinda fell off after the pandemic lightened up.
I’m really happy to have found your page again!❤❤
Great job installing your water maker it should serve you well in your new adventures Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.
Don't worry - it's absolute perfekt - who can, Billy can... Merry Christmas to you...🥰👍🧑🎄
You guys are AMAZING 😮
This is the BEST water maker overview and install video I've seen yet.... THANK YOU!!
Nice job on the install!
first class job Billy a real pro drink up!!
Nice job on the install, loved the video.
best descriptive video on water maker works and install,, well done 👍⛵👍
I bet you guys are really happy, I know if it was me I'd be delirious if I lived on a boat. Keep the good stuff coming and give Jetty a treat for me.
Merry Christmas ☃️🎄
Very clean install.
Nice job Billy!
Great vid, love the maintenance, very professional install. Merry Christmas to all.
So glad the Water Maker is finally in.
I hope the repairs go well too.
Nice Clean install. We'll done!
Great video Billy. Thank you
Impressive! Neat install too!
Wow! It looks great- I’m impressed
Beautiful visuals, very interesting video's.
You're one smart 🍪.
Beautiful well thought out install.
Thanks for sharing.
Extremely well done. Very clear how the system works.
Cool! I do like these type of videos on the technical side of boat life.
In rivers, the water that you touch is the last of what has passed and the first of that which comes; so with present time.
🎉Wishing you a happy, healthy new year, Sierra & Billy! Safe travels❤
Happy New Year, All the best for 24...
Happy Solstice !
Happy Solstice to you!
Bill, is there anything you can’t do? Merry Christmas and smooth sailing in 2024
I don’t know if anybody else has this question how long do the filters the big long tube filters last? great video. I’m in all of you people because I think I do that probably not.
To vent the heat out of that compartment with the pump (I had heat issue in camper compartment) I mounted a computer fan in the inside and used a S/S shower grid between the fan & bulkhead and the 4 fan screws hold it in place. Then I wired a usb plug for power. Has worked great over a last 18 months. Good luck we enjoy your chanel
Great video, great details and clean install. Only additional thing I would’ve done while testing the system is turning the pump switch to on without the panel to make sure it works, that way if you’ve ever lost the panel, there is no question that the pump switch works or not, just for a peace of mind.
Thanks for the very interesting installation. Quite alot of planning and labor to get it going, but well worth it, for sure.
Nice install video.
Great episode
Looking at the list of adds ons for an 1170 now. The Rainman looks like a much cheaper option than the Spectra one they specify. And the installation didn’t look too difficult at all. Thanks for the video
Wow, I'm so impressed by your determination and hard work in making unlimited fresh water on your sailing catamaran! Your maintenance and installation videos are always top-notch, and it's clear that you put in a lot of research and preparation. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and an adventurous 2024 filled with amazing sailing experiences. May your water maker bring you the independence and freedom to explore remote anchorages and enjoy the luxuries of home on your boat.
Do you do anything to "re-mineralize" the water?
I think they make "filters" for that if I'm not mistaken.
Give you that bottled water taste.
Good Job.!
12vdc water makers do not inherently make less water than AC. Production is a function of high pressure pump size and that means the size of the motor has to be adequate. A pump driven by a 1hp dc motor (regardless of voltage) will make just as much water as a 1hp ac motor.
Perhaps he compared packages. So there might be 'only' 12V packages with smaller pumps. On top: (I don't know how much power you need for a gallon of water) If Billy wants 40 gallons per hour - that results in a big motor (shown in the video) and at 12V level would require huge cabeling between the batteries and that motor.
Yes, the trade-off is in amps. Another plus for AC is, if you DIY (which I highly recommend ), AC motors are cheaper and more easily sourced.
This. Clearly they chose the brand first and then picked what they had available… because there absolutely are other brands that manufacture high output systems with DC power. Which is fine, they like the brand for the numerous reasons mentioned… but the claim about DC systems being inherently less productive is false.
'Isn't there some way to make sure it's more straight' ? ? ? ' No, 'cause it's a Boat.'
'Right about there . . . . ' Yup, by sight & 'feel' & what works.
& I love the jazzy 'Elevator Music' to bore, grind, cut, & shoot screws by ! ! !
Let's see . . . . . next to Air ( to breath ) isn't water the next most important necessity for human life ? A good choice ! ! take care, rh
Very cool video, great content. We have the portable Rainman system for our sailboat, it's powered by a honda 4 stroke engine. Our boat is a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran that doesn't have a lot of storage area, so the portable unit was the best option for us......
Great video! Auto flush is time saving feature. Only way to travel is with a desalinator! You two are the best. As Michelle told you, we had a 2 hp AC pump, made 60 to 65 gallons an hour. We pieced ours together, had plans to make it all automatic.
Nice job.
❤❤❤❤❤lot of work
Sorry for the additional comment but something else to consider. Many jurisdictions particularly those that have natural reefs have regulations on releasing brine into the water. Most vessels have brine collection tanks and something called a diffuser system that constantly mixes seawater with the brine solution to get the concentration below 40,000 mg/L, a level considered safe for discharge. It's not entirely necessary to have a diffuser system if you have a brine tank and release the tank off-shore in deep waters where the brine solution becomes so diluted that there is no impact on the reef environment. Just be sure you check your local jurisdictions on the continuous release of brine into the ocean and I would advise against it if you are moored in a shallow natural reef area. The added benefit of pumping it out of a tank instead of letting it trickle out down the side of your vessel is the impact the brine will have on the finish on your boat. You really want to pump that stuff away from the hull if you can.
good job
Myself, I would cut some slits in the little wall where your water maker sits, and on the backside, install a computer fan to pull air in and have it turned on when the pump turns on, and turns off when the pump turns off easy enough to do with a drillbit and a jigsawand if you do it nice enough, you can make it look factory
how good was that !
Wherever there are metal to plastic/plastic to metal connections will be the weak links in the chain. Safe journeys !
Billy - about the vent: I had nearly bad experience with that vents. On a friends boat with a Peltier fridge we installed a vent at the top of the cabinet. But - it was still very hot inside. Perhaps think of an fan behind.
big job.. good job :P
I, for one, am impressed….
Bruh you need to put sealant 5200 or 291 or epoxy like west systems around that giant hole you drilled for you controller or you will ruin that part of the wall with humidity when you shower.
What I find interesting are these water makers that make drinking water by pulling it from the air. They basically act as dehumidifiers, which could be another advantage. Right now they don't produce as much water as a regular water maker. I don't know the hit as far as electricity use compared to a regular water maker. All that could change as tech advances.
Great video as always. One small thing - can you quote internationally recognised (metric) units as well as imperial for viewers who are outside the USA? Otherwise very helpful and interesting.
Wow, you blow chief Makoi away.
22:42, not a lot of room for the other valve and hose.
Perhaps, epoxy seal the inside of the wall of the control panel placement. May save you problems in the future of water getting into the wood between the glass outer surfaces. Happy holidays!
Very well done. How much water is used for the auto flush? Can you save it in a bucket etc. Cheers.
The autoflush is programmable depending on the flow of your house pump for the autoflush. It can be set for 2, 4, 6, or 8 minutes. We recommend flushing with about ten litres of fresh water.
Billy, you are clearly used to having company when you are using the bathroom. Jetty girl was like, "Excuse me, you aren't allowed to sit in here without me! I am your Velcro doggy!" LMAO My dog walks in to make sure he knows where I am (He is blind) comes up sniffs and leaves immediately. I got him when he was already quite old, from my parents who couldn't take care of him anymore, and I know he was not allowed to follow them into bathrooms and such.
I noticed you’re washing machine you’re bringing the water in over the top you might be able to go to Home Depot and look for what they call a dishwasher L that’s the connection for the waterline to a dishwasher it might solve the problem so you can close the lid.. good luck Patrick
Awesome job funsters! How often do you have to change out the membrane filters and how much do they cost?
Impressive! Is there a level that you want to fill your tanks to? Either for health of tanks/system or performance of boat?
The issue with teflon tape over teflon paste is the tape could get inside and cause issues to systems components at least in hydaulics that is. I'm sure it's not good for water systems as well. I do like to use a little tape torwards the end of fittings with paste at the tip back. It has worked all the time for me this way.
If you’re not sloppy with tape, it’s not going to get into the water
Hey you two, we're actually shopping for a watermaker for our vessel and saw this video. So, if we click on the rainman link on your site is there a bonus for you? If we decide on this one, and you do, we want to be sure you get that. Thanks for the great videos.
Great video, we love our rainman, but ours is still portable. I was wondering do you not plan to ever get dock/city water again? How do you plan to keep chemicals out of your tank for the freshwater rinse? I have a designated bucket for the rinse we do not use it for anything else so no chemicals get into the membranes.
I’ll let them answer but our watermaker has a carbon filter to protect the membrane from town water.
👏👏
Love maintenance and installation videos! At around 30:18, with the membrane pressure very low, it looked like the green light for water quality was good? Isn't that supposed to be measuring the membrane output? Was it good because you had already let good water flow? Just curious. Love your videos. Thanks!
Super observant of you. Very good point. My guess is that he had been using the system before the recording of that video segment and there was still fresh water in the system. If he had just turned the Rainman on, the LED would be showing red for at least 90 seconds. If he had been running it unpressured for an extended period, the TDS probe may be dry at the end. The system uses conductivity as a proxy for TDS, so if it's dry, that is basically no conductivity, which would equate to 0ppm.
In normal operation, the LED will be red when you start operating the system.
👍
What adhesive did you you use for that mounting pad to adhere it to the fiberglass?
Another great what and how to video. Is this watermaker proportional size to the size of your boat? So for a boat that is about 32ft or less mono, would a smaller watermaker suffice for a solo sailor? Also the cost of mantiance (filters, tubing ect) would be an interesting insight.
Always top-notch work guys!
IMHO the size of the boat should be neglected. The mayor dimension should be the people who need the water. Perhaps you may look back how much water you needed in the past and calculate the watermaker according.
- Too big, you may get into energy problems
- too small you have to run it endless without having the necessary water. And the filter system in front has to be changed often.
About the daily costs, Billy is the right man to answer.
@wjhann4836 thanks for the info. I'm just gathering info right now. I plan to get a boat in the future for carribien winds. So I'm asking questions now so in the future I'll have a small idea of what to expect.
@@0PsychosisMedia0 The only question I can't answer in any way: How much energy 'cost' a gallon of water. Normally that's a limiting factor why smaller boats still limit their water usage while using a water maker.
As always: there's no free lunch.
Merru Christmas Looked like your doggie ws saying Hey Dad. wHATCHA DOIN?
Does the auto flush have an activated charcoal filter? It would appear that water in your tanks was, until this filling, city water and may contain chlorine. Activated charcoal filter gets rid of chlorine in city water that will damage the membranes in tubes.
Yes the auto flush water does flow through a carbon filter before flushing the system
How many gallons can the filters produce before they need replacing
Just wondering, why not seal the core with epoxy before installing the panel giving the high risk of water exposure?
Is the water intake near the toilet output?
Their black tank can be anywhere on the boat and there are several toilets on the boat. Either way, you don't empty your tanks while making water that would make no sense. You also don't just leave it open and let it flow, because you need the liquids to help the solids leave. You will end up with a huge poop pyramid in your tank if you do that.
@@RiverWoods111 My question was due to the pump and through hull being in the toilet area. They would have to answer that question since they know where their toilet dump is located.
Billy doesn't need a/c just like he didn't need a generator in the Bahamas. 🤣
Is that a black iron 90 at 27:31?
Did you buy extra filters? Keith from Zatara has like 4 of everything.
Paste over tape. But is the paste food grade or for use with potable water?
Yes, the kind that we bought we made sure is approved for use with potable water
