  • Living on our catamaran full time takes lots of planning and prep especially when we are off grid in the tropics for extended periods of time. In this video we bring you with us for the last of the projects we want to get done before we head to the Bahamas on our new sailing catamaran for the first time. It has been years since we have been back over and we are so excited to get back to our favorite place and find unexplored gems and survive on seafood! Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss out on the fun!
This is the washing machine we installed amzn.to/3TSI1OL but it seems to be the same unit sold under a few different brand names.

When you open up the washer to disable the tilt sensor, you can also move the hose inlet over to the side. It'll be fine. yeah... it will be fine. It should be fine. :)

HI Billy and Ciera, well done, I would mount a boiler drain (dummy that is not connected to ahything but the wall) on the bulkhead behind where the hose goes in to the washer so that when the supply hose is not attached to the machine it can screw onto the boiler drain fitting and act as an additional shut off for that line, redundency is good where water on a boat is concerned.
You two inspire me each time I watch one of your videos to be a happier person, thank you.

If you are washing a towel in with other clothes that will stuff up the balance regardless of whether you are on land or at sea, because the towel will naturally hold more water weight than the other clothes or sheets. With top loading machines you have to wash all towels together and you might need to manually move the towels around at the spin cycle.

Something to consider is a (Panda $200?) centrifugal spinner, they spin 10 times better than any washing machine. Fleece jackets and polyester towels will dry in 5 minutes, cotton t shirts 20 minutes. With the spinner, the only reason to have a dryer is to get the wrinkles out. You won't have stuff hanging all over your boat, and save a ton of time.

I'm sure you can relocate the washer fill spout to the side of the washer. when to have time remove the top cover and look around inside the unit. washers usually come apart surprisingly easy and think about it, the hose on the inside of the washer is probably flexible tubing so the cover can be lifted.

Make sure all shipping materials were removed. If you strap it down it will be worse. Speaking from 40+ years of appliance repairs, but never on a boat. Make sure it doesn't rock. It will be hard to do ,but make sure equal weight is on each of the 4 feet.

SUGGESTION billy, when u put clothes in a washer open your clothes up and place clothes in a circlular fashion around the interior of the washer. Just like you are wrapping your clothes around the interior of the drum but laying to the exterior. Do not just throw and mash clothes in there....and think of the clothes like weights if they were wet and try to imagine and create equal weight around the interior of the drum.
Wash only swim suits together, only towels together, t shirts together etc. You get the idea. Do not overload the washer. Load no more than 3/4 dry and towels and sheets or heavy items when wet are less. If you use a towel in with swim suits, the towel is heavier and acts as a heavier weight on one side, thus causing the washer to rock or be off balance when it spins.
Another example is if u do a bed sheet, open it up and wrap it around the interior like a snake leaving a hole in the middle. This gives the washer a little help and the centrifical spinning force will help balance the load but if you just wadded the sheet up and threw it in, youre basically creating a wet huge ball of weighted fabric that will spin off balance.
    Good luck

MEAT TIP!!!!!If you have a food processor or Vita mix. Look for roasts that are on sale, like London broil, untrimmed tri tip any cheap chunk of meat works.Doesn’t matter if boneless or not. Bones make soup. Take partially frozen meat n grind in either machine, cheaper than hamburger n you know whats in it. If its to lean use lard to add amount of fat you want. Freeze all your veggie bit, onion skins, broccoli stems, any veggie bits you toss when cleaning veg keep. Add to fish heads, beef bones, chicken bones. If you have instant pot cook 45 minutes, low simmer on stove. Strain add noodles, rice whatever you like in soup. Shrimp shell’s lobster shells n fish head makes a fabulous fish stock. Love the new washing machine

If you took the back panel off the washer you could plumb the waterline in lower. You can even use the fittings that are on the washer. Modify the top lid so it doesn't hit the plastic top of the washer, it will break. Those small washing machines work extremely well, being a top loader makes it easy to take a part and clean the inner drum a few years down the road. You can get a 115 Volt dryer to go with the washer that draws very little power. Nice install, always a thrill when you complete upgrades.

As with your washing machine re-balancing, if you haven't got enough washing in the machine it may be difficult to balance.
Also, if you "just chuck" things in it can tangle things up somewhat, so maybe you have to fold them and put in "orderly".

The washing machines are great, we had a factory installed one on the 1260. They can be a little fussy, but once you sort it everything is good. Our co captain Therese determined that we should fold over our clothes and arrange them as we loaded so we could balance the load. You'd think it would move around as it washes undoing all that, but it didn't. It worked great. My washer at home is insane when it spins. I just jam foam around the sides. Seems to work.
I'm a more shove it out of the way kind of guy, so I'd suggest putting a piece of rope, with an alpine butterfly and just figure out a way to lift the hatch and end of the mattress out of the way, when you want to do a load, The loop with the butterfly gives you a lot of leverage. It's lot easier to re tuck the sheets then to undo and remake the bed.
Great screen. Brilliant. Going to steal that idea. Thanks.

I’m surprised that no one has came out with a solar built in water heater. I know they make them for hikers and campers. Seems like someone could come up with something for sailboats.
If you flatten out the hamburger meat before vacuum sealing it, it allows easier storage and thaws out quicker.

You should be able to find a 90-degree fitting for the washer. threads on the washer on one side and 3/8 hard plastic push lock on the other. Link the water supply to the fitting with 3/8 plastic water line, You will be able to leave the washer hooked up and be able to close the lid.

You should investigate relocating the fill connection to the right side of the washer.

Congrats Billy on installing Sierra's new washing machine. However, If I know washing machines, and I do, you WILL need to do some form of mounting or limiting mount around the machine so that when it spins it doesn't gyrate a little to starboard and impact on that pipe close to it. Let's face FACTS: washing machine loads RARELY centre/balance themselves perfectly. It may not do this when it's brand new, but as the machine ages it will be inclined to 'walk about' and may vibrate the pipe ends where it goes through the bulkheads cracking the joins, which will then necessitate the removal of the machine to fix the pipe. I'm not sure if a bracket like the one the water heater uses, or perhaps some fibreglassed locating pieces will be needed, but something will need to be fashioned to stop that machine from moving around.
Great work. I love your episodes! . Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.
P.S. Ha ha, I just stopped the episode to make this comment and then the very next sentence when I restarted it was you saying what you were going to do to make it more secure. But I would not brace it to the pipe. Good luck!

We had the same problem with a high end home GE washer during its spin cycle. We even had the service rep come out and look at it. It was a top loader, and it would never balance. It cost over $700.00 at the time, we got rid of it and bought a Maytag.
I'm sorry to say, but you might be in for the same issue. It's not a leveling issue, the new machines are too sensitive to out of balance.

Just put a gasket strip under the door where your washing machine is and that should fix your problem.

I'd say for the size of machine you have it looked like it was overloaded.

My home washer does the same thing, usually because I overloaded it with a bunch of bath towels. Spin cycle goes berserk and refills repeatedly. Try smaller loads. Good luck.

They make a 90° elbow that can stop the disconnecting of the water supply each time you use it. Check a plumbing supply house online.
