I've watched pretty much every review of this vehicle on UA-cam and this is one of the top five. I really appreciate the reviewer speaking to me like an intelligent friend, rather than like a salesman. He shares what he likes and what he doesn't like, but leaves it to me to decide how important a given feature is. I've put a deposit down on an ID.4.
I was going to comment, but you already said what I'm thinking. I'd say top 3 reviews, but that's just nitpicking. Excellent review, excellent reviewer, excellent comment.
I put my deposit on a ioniq 5 (even without knowing its price), but this ID4 comes up a close 2nd. Both over model Y to me. And this rank might change since I have sit in an ID4 but I haven't seen an ioniq 5 yet.
I agree with you. He really did his homework. I’ve seen too many reviewers compare this to a Tesla and be extremely critical because it’s not as fast or doesn’t have a frunk. Some are just plain unwatchable but this is really well done.
@@jscottfree because it's easier to compare specs as a reviewer, than telling what a real vehicle supposed to do for real customers. Same thing goes to the criticism of some cars lacking a physical volume knob without even driving them for days. Reviewers like them only because it's easier for them to find without need to learn where it is since they have to drive tons different cars a week. But for real owner as long as the steering wheel buttons are good (like the Hyundai system), I never use that knob even if I have one.
The host did one of the best reviews I have seen. Good job! Great talent!
"I obviously have big hair." You have AWESOME hair!
Definitely our next car. Test drove one and it knock Tesla out where it matters. The giant screen looks like an after thought in a Tesla. The interior looks well put together and feels more quality in the VW than Tesla as well. Plus you get get free 3 years unlimited charging with the VW!
0:58 the ID.4 does have a liquid battery temperature management system. Both cooling and warming.
Yeah, that part stuck out to me. All EVs have intakes. They're just not as big as the radiators in ICE vehicles so the grilles are much smaller. But all HVAC systems need intake.
@@Megaphonix yea, and Ioniq 5 even have active flaps for those intakes.
I have a volt with 40 miles of battery, and even with that I hardly use the gas generator. 250 miles on the ID4 is more than enough!
I agree. 250 miles of range is still over 3 hours of driving on the highway. I'm ready for a leg stretch/bathroom break after 2 hours of driving, let alone 3.
I have driven both and like the feel of the id 4 over the mach e and I am a die hard ford fan, 3 years free dc fast charging is my ice breaker to get the id 4
I bough one after test driving the Model Y and the Mach e. My wife loves her ID.4 now.
I really like the id.4. I think it's great for someone like me who wants an EV, but doesn't want it to scream "I'm an EV!"
Forrest!! When did you start with cargurus....? Congrats!
Great review. Love the ID4. Excellent point that we now have options.....
It DOES have a thermoregulated/liquid-cooled battery though...
I have mine reserved and ordered! Thanks for this review. I did a quick test drive recently, but didn’t get into the details, so this review was really helpful. I can’t wait to get mine soon!
Dude where have you been?? Love your EV reviews and insights.
Great review! I own a model 3 and had a model Y. This is a great alternative. Drove the Mach E and didn’t care for the seats. Other than that, the Mach E is gorgeous! I prefer 1 pedal driving and coming from two EVs, 250 miles is more than enough. The rate of charge is the more important factor. This car seems to have that down with a good charge curve from 5-80%. No frunk is not a big deal for me. Rarely use it on my 3 (only on long trips for the most part). Free EA charging for 3 years is great. I would love to get this as my next car.
A lot of creative little touches in there, nice job VW. Also excellent review, Forrest is the man!
AWESOME job on the review! Truly enjoyed watching this segement and felt like he addressed my main questions about the car plus some. Great job!
I've been watching these and yours is explained very well !
Excellent review of this outstanding car, very captivating, eloquent, objective, coherent and well structured. As a French Canadian, I enjoyed the clarity and your diction, it was refreshing to see an american that puts the subject first without any bad jokes or far fetch comparisons. Keep up!
Great review. In depth and exactly what we want to know.
great short review .... my wife and I drove on today at the serramonte shopping mall in san francisco
Excellent review. I've watched nearly every ID.4 video and this is great. Just wish it was longer. I can't get enough. :-) Reserved my ID.4 yesterday. How will I wait until December!
The answer is yes. Yes, I am choosing the (AWD) ID.4 over the Model Y and the Mach-e.
Same here. I don't hate the competitors or anything, but I think the VW ID.4 is the best "all things considered" car, unlike the Tesla that has the best powertrain tech and infotainment but is bad at being a normal car, and the Mach-E which purports to be a sporty car w/ the mustang badge but is actually the least sporty/dialed-in of the three. VW has the least impressive power specs for its weight, but basically nails every other aspect of the car. I think my only minor complaint was that I didn't like the feel of the capacitive buttons on the steering wheel, but also wasn't a deal breaker by any means. Everything else seems dialed in nicely.
What was not normal about the Model-Y?
@@wondamaner No instrument cluster for starters.
And might as well toss in "Worst consistency of build quality of any automobile on the market." There are worse designed cars, and more consistently poorly assembled cars, but for being a luxury product their QC is abhorrent.
@@Cowclops Tesla doesn’t sell luxury cars. Their cars are priced for the cost of tech and their needs for capital expansion. A lot of people think it’s luxury based on price, but the battery and general capital raise is what the price is about.
Woah it's Forrest!! Awesome job making it to the big leagues buddy; you deserve it!
Just a little clarification, the battery is actively heated, cooled.
Yeah, came here to say this. Definitely has active cooling which is really important when shopping for an EV.
From an interview heard with VW, they do have the ability to add hold to stop drift and they can do it with over the air update, also tires are different sizes for front and back wheels.
One pedal driving is AWESOME. Disappointed the ID.4 does not have it. Hope it can be enabled later on with outa updates.
Ytly
Great review. Yes I am going to order me one of these! I have a VW Tiguan and this a perfect EV Twin. High tech without looking like a space ship. Lovely.
This review is actually filled with useful opinions rather than just a guy reading a spec sheet while sitting in a car. Pretty much every other car reviewer out there: take note!
Forest, great honest review!
Excellent review!
Great Review Forrest!!
I like how at 12:30 the shutter speed matches the wheel rotation-maglev floating car! Thanks for a great review.
I noticed that too - neat!
Freaky!!!
Since you pose the question in the video - I think 250 is plenty (and even 200 is more than plenty). The average person only drives 30 miles a day, HOWEVER earlier EVs that only had 80-100 miles real world range even if it was good for a couple days of driving, have other issues. For example, if you forget to plug in a short range EV just one night, you may be cutting it very close on your next day's commute. I would not want a car that can only go a maximum of 100 miles on a charge even if thats enough to go to work and back 3 times just because SOMETIMES you have to do other, longer drives without straight up road tripping.
200+ Mile range and 125KW charging means that not only can I drive the vast majority of likely trips, I can also plug in for 30 minutes and keep going. Certainly, thats not preferable to topping off a gas tank in 2-3 minutes, but its not unreasonable to plug into a fast charger, eat lunch, and come back to a car with 170-200 miles of range on it afterwards. Its a slightly different paradigm of road tripping but a 200+ range vehicle means you'll need to stop about as frequently as humans need to eat meals/use the restroom/ etc anyway.
Also the charging curve on the ID.4 is very good and comparable to the Tesla. You can charge from 0% to 100% in about 60 min, or 10-80 % in 38 minutes. The Mach E takes 150 min to go from 0%-100% (take a long nap).
@@gao57009 I saw that in another review. The big issue with the mach-e is that its charge rate drops too aggressively and once it hits 80% its like locked to 12KW. Maybe they're trying to discourage people from fast charging beyond that, but the id.4 keeps going at about 25-30kw beyond 80% so if you REALLY need those last few miles of range it doesn't arbitrarily stop you from doing it.
Meanwhile, the ID4 is a full 125KW right up until 30-40%, then drops slowly. You can get 70 miles of range in just 10 minutes if you're starting with a 5-10% battery. Thats not exactly the same as topping off a gas car but also under normal circumstances you'd never have to go to a dc fast charger to top off your EV because its already fully charged when you leave your house every day.
@@Cowclops that charge rate of 70miles in 10min is 420mph. Tesla does 1000mph at V3 stations. What does Electrify America stations charge the ID 4 at?
@@wondamaner Only 125KW and only if its nearly dead, but you can get a legit 70 miles in about 10 minutes. Whats a Tesla charge at on the v3 stations, 350kw? The new EA stations can actually do 350 but since ID4 is limited to 125 its moot.
I don't doubt that right now the easiest EV to road trip is a model 3 LR, but I like the packaging and interior design of the id4 much better than the model Y. In an alternate universe where tesla had their good power trains but the interiors were less tesla-y and maybe also if the QC was more consistent, I'd have definitely got a Model Y.
@@Cowclops The V3 is 250kw or 1000mph for the first 30% or so. What's important to me, is the fact that Tesla chose a minimalistic interior design. The screen does not bother me at all, and I vastly prefer that at night to 30+ lit up knobs and buttons causing reduced vision due to their combined glare. I can turn my display to 4% lit in night mode and see everything I need with nothing glaring at me. Since I use EAP all the time when driving, I set my cruise speed and just don't worry about how fast I am driving, because I can watch traffic and the side of the road for deer etc. What most people experience with QC, is the initial deliveries as they turn the machine up. After that, things are pretty consistent based on the timing of comments and the number that appear on all the forums that I see. What Tesla doesn't have is a dealer network that will fix everything visibly wrong, before a car goes on the lot. Instead, Tesla has taken on that responsibility and trusted the service centers to take up that task. But, as the total number of deliveries through the SCs accelerates, more things are perhaps slipping through. But still, I think that the reality is that quality of assembly and alignment is not an ongoing issue.
The ID4 is not something I've got to see yet, so I really can't compare it to my LR RWD Model-3 very well. What I will tell you is that I feel that in the end, you will drive your car and the range and the speed of charging will be the most predominate detail that is in your face day in and day out. If you don't buy something that meets or exceeds your needs there, you may be frustrated more that you think. Range anxiety is a problem with EV uptake still, even though for the majority of city are drivers, it's never going to be an issue.
Good luck with your choice and welcome to the world of EV ownership! It's a great feeling!
He did a great review I'll be buying one soon thanks again for the a amazing review 😊
Find the 2 pedal approach more intuitive as you don't have to think about regen too much. If you press the break pedal slightly it regenerates, if you press it hard then the car uses its breaks.
Awesome review!
Excellent review. Please review the Pro model RWD. Thank you.
I'm enjoying my first week with my VW ID 4 - I really thought the Model Y was in my future, but I accepted the compromises they made in building the ID.4 and the 3 years free electric certainly helped in my decision (plus the federal tax incentive).
I can't wait till I can order the AWD model. But I may order a RWD model if it handles well in the snow.
I have a Nissan leaf with 150 mile range, and there are days in the winter that I'm worried about making it back home. I would have to stop at a fast charger to get some extra power. 250 mile range would definitely solve that problem.
I drive an Electric Trolley Bus in Vancouver BC. It free wheels similar to the D mode on the ID 4. I love getting the trolley up to speed and then take my foot off the accelerator and the bus will roll for a long way. It also allows me to cover the brake approaching an intersection or potential hazards and due to free wheeling, the bus does not slow down going through the intersection encouraging me to use my accelerator instead of covering my brake in case something occurs. John
Have been watching a lot of reviews lately about this car and this one of the best.. Good job!
I'm a Model 3 owner and am getting an 'SUV' EV for my wife. Just did a test drive of this today and put in a reservation... In all honesty I would prefer the Model Y if the federal rebate was still available for Teslas. But without it, I think the ID4 becomes a much better value proposition. Like the aesthetics and the features are really good. I could've gotten the 1st edition at the dealer today but we are really looking for the AWD version and that is why we did the reservation... If the GREEN ACT passes before the AWD version comes out then we may go with our first choice instead since the ID4 Pro S with AWD is basically the price of the Model Y.. Let's see!
This versus IONIQ 5 is the matchup I am interested in.
Same here. This comparison will determine which EV I purchase.
I'm just wondering when the Kia EV6 GT is going to hit the US market.
As long as Hyundai decides to make the Ioniq 5 available in ALL states, not just the short list that they currently follow. For example, I live in AZ and no Hyundai EVs are sold in this state right now. Dealers have told me they don't know if the Ioniq 5 will be available here or not.
@@gao57009 I'm in NC and the same. I hope it's expanded to all states
@Joel Henderson Two different car with different purpose, different price tag. The ID 4 is for people that want to make smooth switch from ICE that want a pleasant, practical modest car that drive well. E tron Q4 might be more comparable to Ionic 5.
I want the Awd model ID.4 I would have preferred they give us a one pedal driving but hey I would have also preferred the ID.3 with one pedal driving even more the rest is solid. Congrats Forrest! Great seeing you on CarGurus.
This is a very good honest review. Thank you. I'm a Tesla Model Y owner. I'm looking for ID 4 for my wife as it ticks all my needs. :-) Loved your hair style.
I ordered the ID4 1st Max Mangan Grey. Should get it in a couple weeks 😃
The VW ID 4 is the front runner for EV's I'm considering for my wife to drive. She does not need a sport package in a car and I don't need the price tag of a Tesla. However, one thing to consider about range: 250 miles per charge is quite plenty for the average person driving normally every day to work. Even if you live in the suburbs, typically people don't commute 100 miles to work. And, considering you will find a car fully charged every morning, that is not much of a concern.
Although Forrest did a great job with this review, he and others always fail to mention how the range actually applies to a real life every day scenario. Do the math of what 200 miles a day amounts to in a year= >45,000 miles. That's just weekdays.
Now consider this: do you put over 40k miles in your car a year?
If you road trip, they got charging stations all over now.
I test drove an ID 4 in a spur of the moment thing and I must say, I agree with every one of Forrest's observations about the car.
Although I'm sure it's designed a bit different than the Tesla Model Y, the ID.4 does indeed have a liquid thermal control system for the battery. If you do a bit of deep Google searching you can even find pictures of the vehicle with the battery cover off and overhead and underbody shots of the coolant lines going from the front directly into the battery pack.
Nice review! Looks like a great car
It seems the perfect size to hire in town on the way to recreation.
Hi there.Where did it build.? Thank you
I definitely chose the ID.4 over the Tesla because of build quality and price. The Mach-E is very compelling, but price and ride comfort is not what I am looking for.
If you get a Mach-E and either paint it, or wrap it in a caramel color, then every morning you can wake up to a Caramel Mach-E Auto, ready to go, without having to stop at Starbucks! Image how exciting that will be!
Just ordered an ID.4 after five years with my Model S.i have always had ”creep mode” on so no full one pedal drive. The reason was actually the Tesla dealer telling me it’s better for the brakes. They need to be used. So i personally don’t get the fuss about the ”one pedal drive” on the id4. This is how i would configure it anyways hehe.
Btw. Great vid my man!
Forrest; Love ya...First genuinely honest, ‘positive’ review of the ID4; and I agree with you on every detail you covered. I will need to test drive one. Thank you.
I’m from an auto manufacturing family; and Forrest knows his sh#@! I trust him, and I trust his reviews.
Are you driving in Irvine? Looks like Woodbury Town Center.
nice vid! since you mentioned crv and rav4, I think it's fair to mention the predicted reliability of the ID4 or VW in general. to be honest, the incentives are really attractive and i've always been a fan of the VW wagon/hatch sporty look. but the only thing holding me back is reliability, coming from a japanese import driver. thanks!
After owning VWs up to 2005 then stopping, I decided to buy an ID.4 because I skipped a lot of reliability problems with recent cars, particularly direct injection engines. No engine, less to go wrong. I expect VW will do well on reliability with this car.
@@Jastor00 nice. really wanted to order the pro awd but gotta wait til oct or later... lol
Agree, very comfortable car for those use to Toyota and Honda cars. VW did a great job finding ride comfort and quality people want. I had no problem merging on the highway all the way up to 70 mph.
Will the ID.4 allow V2G or V2H during a power outage the Tesla will not allow ☹️
I agree with most of what you said, except for the seat. I really like these plush seats over the model y's hard and non-vented seats (both do not have active ventilation but this one is perforated). I'm 6'2 and I feel more comfortable in this car over a model y. This one feels like a proper vehicle, and model y is fast but it feels more like a fast iPhone.
Great review. Will you get more than 250 miles of range if you use the regen brake setting instead of just regular drive mode?
I dont think there is a notable consumption difference due to drive modes. The break pedal always uses regen (hardly ever the real breaks). D mode can even be predictive using navigation and radar to decelerate smoothly without need to touch the pedal. Regarding range: keep in mind that german EVs have shown to normally achieve better range than EPA. The ID.4 is a great long distance car - just search for the recent nordic circle video of Tesla Bjoern...
I must say that I was addicted to Mustang’s one pedal driving in as little as 15 minutes. It was like a game! Also, when driving in this manner; I think one may feel more in sync with the machine. Think of the brake as a circuit or switch; when you pause; you disconnect; Ford’s one pedal tension seems to be just at that ‘’Goldilocks’ regen point; in my opinion.
I don't own an EV, and am wondering about the one pedal, too. I don't know if I'd miss it or not?!
Does it have auto brake hold?
You have more hair than me not cool😏. But clear information and great review, thank you
Amazing hair! You have a great review and I am sold. It is not perfect, but it seems to do everything well. This is an EV for people who are not total tech geeks and want to an easy transition from a gas powered vehicle.
What seems interesting is how he discusses the fact that the Model-Y beats it in specs, yet it's still a good deal for a similar price. The $7K rebate is interesting for sure, I got that for my Tesla Model 3. Electricity for 3 years of free charging at Electrify America is semi-interesting. But here's the deal about that. EA was given the penalty monies for VW's Diesel gate and used that to build a charging network that is most beneficial to VW. Thus, it's not really a penalty to VW, it's actually now a market advantage because VW has a high speed charging network and got to write it down as a penalty instead of as an investment (tax obligations). Additionally private monies being invested in deploying EA chargers into private business parking lots enhances VWs position.
What VW has created in the ID.4 is semi compelling from a technical perspective. Most people will charge at home, not at EA chargers and thus any savings there (EA is 4x what it cost to charge at home and 2x what Tesla superchargers cost, in general) may be minimal for the majority of people. Long distance travel will be very expensive on EA and other networks which are operated as a profit center, as opposed to Tesla's charging stations which have been deployed at cost, to date, and that's kept the cost down to 2x charging at home. I pay $0.11 per kWh at home and $0.24 per kWh at local superchargers. With $2.50/gal gas, at 25mpg, you get $0.10 per mile. At my average 290wh/mile (3.45miles/kwh) and $0.11/kwh mostly for charging that's 7.25 kWh for 25 miles or $0.80 to drive 25 miles, instead of $2.50. Thus charging on EA would be (full range/25)*$0.80 in additional costs. My ~300 miles of range would be $9.60 additional for each "fill up". If you stretch that out over the life of the car at 200k miles, that's $6400.00 which almost removes any benefits of the $7k rebate.
Great analysis and something important to consider.
@@vagabondsteve No it's not it's a obfuscating mess. EA rates are variable by state, but the pass member cost is $.31 per kwh. That's not twice the quoted supercharger cost. The individual variables that would affect real-world use are significant. The $7500 rebate is an immediate, known savings. Your driving and charging needs are somewhat under your control.
His hair is giving me Chaka Khan vibes...and I’m here for it
Coasting is the key to efficency no regen at all . If my chevy would coast in drive and i could just use the paddle for complete stop i would do like 20 milles more at leas on country road
What’s up with the odd color of the steering wheel assembly. It should be blending with the rest of the interior.
I've watched all the reviews and I'm going with the ID4. Just sorry I missed out on the first edition!
Even without the front truck, this has more cargo capacity than Mach E and Model Y.
I echo the many comments lauding this presenter and the substance he brings to the presentation. One thing (among many) that stood out for me was his commentary on the design and style of the id.4. I found that quite interesting. My main gripe with this car is its efficiency: 97 MPGe. I think this is due to its curb weight: around 4,600 pounds! So it goes.....
I'm in love with this EV. I'm transitioning into the EV lifestyle. This is my vehicle for sure!
Waiting to see what Nissan Ariya will be offering. The ID.4 looks very promising.
Excellent review, yes there are choices besides Tesla now! I love that it can coast, will see if I do need one peddle drive or not, coming from a manual Golf, will defenently check it out, once it arrives up in Canada.
Trust me when I say that a front trunk is overrated, yes it is nice to have but is not essential.
2:20 No frunk means no extra weight ahead of the front axle which gives a favourable RWD-like handling vehicle. A frunk full of stuff adds extra weight ahead of the front axle results in a nose-heavy FWD-like handling vehicle.
8:00 No one-pedal driving, for me TY. I like to put the brakes and my right foot to work.
Gotta get to 300 miles...I feel it's the benchmark. Still.... lots of incentives to choose this rather than stretching ur dollar for the competitors
I just ordered this car, the Pro S. I have driven two different Tesla, which are very, very nice, but I can see much better out of this car. I do drive long distances a couple of times a year so I would love a longer mileage battery. For now I will probably just take our gas car on the long trips and this one on shorter trips. It will be great for running around town. Very excited to get one.
You said there is no liquid calling of the battery. Are you sure?
Range, fast charging and price make it a winner.
Man what an awesome video and sadly 250 would not be enough for me. However, the car is impressive. 😳Yet Mr. Jones I could only imagine touching that wheel with my go to Big Mac extra sauce, fries(plastered with ketchup) & a coke😂
Edmunds tested range on EV's and ID4 got 287 miles and Tesla model Y performance only got 263 miles
ID4 is beautiful! Good Job!
I am so glad we have choices. My next vehicle will be an EB. I wish the range was more now. I need 300 or better.
I have been contemplating alot over range. My take is that for my daily driving I need (at the most) 140 miles. For when I need to visit family far away and things like that we will still need to stop for toilet, food and stretching our legs (safer driving as well). So the compromise with range is getting closer to its solution as long as the network for charging is there.
6'4" I'd say... LOL. Great review. I can't wait to see the review of the AWD 302hp version of this.
I've only driven manual transmission cars so 1 pedal driving is very similar so it's fine as long as it isn't super strong. That's like driving around in 1st gear all day long.
Ioniq 5, EV6, Q4, Mach E, ID4, Ariya, GV60 are all coming this year, why buy a poorly built Telsa?
Hahaha great kevin n, like your one pedal driving. Most Teslas are over the build quality. Also high expentations to the German car workers. The EU TSL model Y is for the real standoff and TSL have to improve to compete with the models you mentioned. But specs and price is not all. What symbol do you want for your clutch; a stopsquare or maybe the skip arrow? Ohh i know, its the eject symbol!
@@emilweyehansen4023 model Y build quality is also terrible. The AC system is stupid. Want to change air direction? Oh go into pages of the 1 screen system to find it. That is not advancement.
In Canada the Model Y is going to be 15k more than most of the competition so it’s not even competitive imo.
yes, i would get this one because it will be easier to transition from gas to ev to being with.
"it's laggy" "it's very responsive"
He said the Mach-E's system was laggy.
I can’t decide which is better, the ID.4 or the reviewer!
All EVs should have the ability of one pedal driving and "brake hold". VW should have at least made it as a selectable option to either turn it OFF or ON.
I want the option of one pedal driving🙁
Yes I will take it over it’s competition
Still waiting for the ID Buzz it will be the families first EV and First Mini-Van
250 range is why I won't buy o e yet my Volkswagen Tiguan can go 400+ miles on a tank so I can go visit my kids 300+ miles away non stop
3 years free charging. Happy Americans
I just bought this car love it glad I'm buying the 2022 model it's faster then the mustang mach
What's with the lack of liquid battery cooling? Bummer!
hmm, i dont think i would like that... it would get some getting use to...scares me a bit...i think ill get one
A better hardware than Model Y or Mach E.
very nice review.
nobody talked about 'Kid'. cool, I didn't think of that, it only had to be in Red ...bbzzzz..bzzzzz, ..bzzzzz
Those pedals are dope. Play and pause. Come on.
Supposedly those pedals are only on the First Edition model which has been sold out.
