When you are in ECO mode or ECO+ and you want to overtake with max power, you need to floor the pedal and then force it down a notch, it will override the ECO mode and give you full boost. Wireless phone charging, level trunk floor, electric seats, electric sensor operated tailgate are all part of different trim levels you can choose when buying..

@Arlo Matthias i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
It’s good to mention that there are a few different first editions. In many other countries it’s fully loaded or there are more first edition options, like the first Max. Apparently it’s not like this in the UK. The camera at the back has a washer on it , to clean it. So dirt is no problem.
BTW - You can switch off lane assist (and all other assist features) with the click of a single button on the left multifunction panel on the steering wheel.
Wow, you guys are so, so much more knowledgeable in terms of elements affecting driving experience than any of the other UA-cam channels and host reviewers.
Try putting the pedal to floor the next time you are in Eco mode to pass, I recall Kyle on Out of Spec reviews you tube mentioned this switch to put it in full power mode (for overtaking)
My BMW i3 behaves similarly in eco mode, but if you plant your foot to the floor you get full power. To my mind, not having this capability is a serious safety concern. You don’t want to be hunting for a button or dashboard setting mid-way through an overtaking manoeuvre!
Your reviews are very clever. I like that you get all different members of your team to review the car. Top marks! 👍👍 The weird thing about the heated steering wheel is that if you buy a Golf 8 they put the heated steering wheel button on the actual steering wheel. Makes much more sense. Drive the Deal are knocking these out for £35k delivered to your door.
I've been driving an ID4 for 3 months and have found it a very good experience. The performance and range is good, the drivers seat is great. One of the things I hate, is the transmission control is up on the right hand side of the steering column. It's not where you expect it to be and I have put it in drive when I wanted reverse. The gloss finish really marks easily and I wont get to drive it in the winter as my next new EV is coming, Kona Electric. In conclusion, 7 out of 10 for the ID4, its got lots of space and is great to drive in comfort.
I really enjoyed your review! One note about 14:45 though, I think the plastic side panels are very clever because some other cars *cough* Model 3 *cough* have metal and paint there where road debris hits the surface and when the paint wears off you will eventually see rust.
One of the most useful real world reviews I’ve seen for this vehicle. The car just doesn’t sound like it’s quite “ready”. I’d love you to do a similar review of the Skoda Enyaq. For now I’ll be sticking with my BMW i3, some features VW seem to have shamelessly stolen from the i3.
Great 'real world' review as always. Just a few observations if I may, You can put the heated seats on with a single press, just tap 2 fingers on the temperature control or better still say 'Hello ID my bum is cold!' Trust me that does work. Also you can turn the heated steering wheel on by saying 'Hello ID my hands are cold. Also you can set the seats and heated steering wheel to come on automatically at the start os a journey if the temperature is below a set limit. But you are right it's not intuitive enough.
I have the 1st Max here in Austria, it has auto-tailgate, wireless charging, pano-roof, AR Head-up Display (which is awesome), Massage seats with lumbar adjustment and huge 21 inch rims. Overall, an amazing car & better build quality than Tesla. I love it!
Good that u love it. I have 2 model ys and I love them . Teslas though have much better software and you can watch Netflix, youtube, play video games, has its own charging network, autopilot is amazing for highway driving and if there is any issues with ur car Tesla service will come to ur house and fix it.
@@RSEV Base here is 35k EUR and the Max is 58k. There is a 5k government grant though that brings that price down. Its 7k cheaper than the Model Y AWD. @@FeatureRequest Teslas are great, definitely better battery and efficiency but VW does better build quality - imho. Plus the convenience factor of wireless Carplay is not to be underestimated. I found the spotify and radio on the Tesla to be fiddly.
Nice to see a thorough review. Thanks Richard and all the team for the effort! Very helpful and covers all the key aspects enough to attract the interest of the average family ICE driver. Just a pity we only got the standard 1st edition in Britain as would have been nice to see all the toys the rest of the world got to choose. Blame Volkswagen UK for that! At least it was 10k cheaper than the 1st max though. Glad you like the socks - well Tesla did make shorts 🤣 The little bag has seeds to plant a tree by the way ☝🏻 Keep the great videos coming!!
Really fair review here. I’m an ID.3 Family spec owner. I’m still shocked that for this being a launch edition you’d expect all the bells and whistles. No glass roof, no split level boot floor, no keyless entry and no wireless charging is a big miss for most owners in today’s world. I do agree though that VW have done really well with the sound deadening and road comfort. I agree with the lane departure. It will keep you in the lane but won’t hold you centre of the lane. Did you try the air care when you fart in the cabin? It does actually work. Even gets rid of bus diesel fumes too. Really like this feature.
There is an other first edition. It’s called first Max. That is fully loaded. This is the cheaper first edition. Apparently the only one available in the Uk.
Another great unbiased review, loving the comedy aspect. We think it shows there needs to be a balance between screens and easy one touch buttons/levers. Maybe voice control is a simpler way, if it does it, to turn heat etc? Women are always cold, lol, the heated seats/steering wheel is an often used feature in our Kona. Loving the boot space tests!
Not looking like a bad car from that review (and I liked your refreshing approach to reviews esp in conjunction with your Edinburgh to Bournemouth road trip episode), but the new Hyundai and Kia out imminently are going to be very tough competition, including on range. Something thats not often covered is that extra range doesnt just mean fewer stops it can mean no stops and even if you stop for "comfort" if the chargers not working or occupied its not a crisis. You did slightly mention this in the road trip video , but in any case 220 miles is IMO somewhat poor for a £40k car.
We have another video showing both a Kia and Kona on a road trip. On that day they were getting c 300 miles range which is great. Shame their 70kw charging isn’t a bit quicker but they’re amazing cars
Hey, great job guys - and girl! I'm a Body Shop Ind. Engineer at the VW plant in Chattanooga TN, USA. We're gearing up to build the American made ID4 now. Very comprehensive review and from a very practical perspective. It clears out our anxiety on how long range the car can be. It is also a relief to see how it recharges in the middle of the journey.
@05:25 regarding eco-mode. If you really press the accelerator it overrides eco-mode. Sort of like a kickdown feeling to the pedal like in an oldschool automaticgearbox vehicle.
I hope they patch the software so you can turn off the lane keep quickly. I’ve watched a lot of id3 vids and it seems to be one of the top gripes. That aside VW seems to have got it about right.
I have tested this car. Wireless (and wired) Carplay worked as it should. And there is no reason to drive in eco mode on highway. It's up to you how you spend the energy in the battery.
Great review, love the team's views as separate snips from you :) Keep up the videos mate, loving it. Let see some yearly service videos on all the EV you have, like what to expect and so on. This is one question I always get asked by my friends that don't own EV's :)
Thanks and yes I’m kind of gathering up service data. They don’t need much of course. The Tesla has no service interval at all… But general maintenance and service info yes. Audi etron for example jsut had first service after 2 years and 11k miles and they wanted over £400! Parts: pollen filter and brake fluid. So not impressed by that I will admit
nice review except that a great many things are down a spec and / or have been already (software) fixed on a test car I had last week: Steering assist works actually really good now and also stays off once switched off. classic kick down (there is a small resistance to overcome at the end of the pedal way) unlocks full power instantly also in eco mode. apple car play works wirelessly and really good and seemless. screen is also really responsive now and sat nav works really well. my test drive car had panoramic glas roof (amazingly large), power lift gate which opens with foot kick unter the rear bumper (so position of button does not matter), wireless charging and wireless apple car play which worked really well. the reverse camera is equipped with a little washer, so also not an issue. also the seat did come with memory settings and lumbar support (and even a massage function :-). the screen in my car was much larger and finally the augmented reality heads up display was just really impressive.
The 1st Edition ID.4 in the USA has all those features, a panoramic glass roof, leatherette seating, and a Class I trailer hitch. I had assumed the ID.4 1st edition was fully loaded in all markets.

Great review. There is nothing special, maybe the socks. But there is also nothing terrible. Some things you need to get used to. And all this makes a long relationship. And if German Engineering still is there (the car is actually produced in Germany), it is a decent daily car for years.
I forget the exact methods (I don’t actually drive an ID.4..yet!) but there is a shortcut to roll all four windows down at the same time. Also, for heated seats you can tap some button on there with two fingers and the heated seat options are quickly accessible.
Best if you come back to show all the tech details after spending time to learn them properly. It will be very useful for people seriously considering the car. Did you buy it after government announcement to scrap the incentive on cars costing more than 35k ? Thank you
Indeed will consider a full guide, but everyone gets used to their own cars though. There’s not much to show really, it have radio, nav and some car settings like any other car really. We’ll visit vw for a software update I guess and hopefully then car play will work.
I had the pleasure of driving the ID.4 1st MAX yesterday, and it had all the bells and whistles (glassroof, 21" alloys, electric ajustable fronseats with memory and massage function, HUD with AR and so on) I guess You just bought the wrong version of the ID.4... all though I'm not sure, that the 1st MAX is available in all countries. I live in Denmark, so there might be a difference. All 1st editions are sold out, so I would recommend the ID.4 Tech og the ID.4 Family.
Possible tip for quick switch from Eco to max. power mode: if it's anything like e-Golf, you simply push the accelerator down hard (like kick-down) until there's a click. You have to press down pretty hard, can't be done accidentally.
This must be one of the very first editions as every other review I've seen has had auto tailgate, electric seats and full glass top w/shield and wireless charger
Bought bottom of the range then complains of options it doesn't have. Typical Tesla owner bashing any other brand to defend the fact that they are massively overpaying!
9:00 Lane Assist is a safety feature that prevents you from driving out of the lane. There is also an option called Travel Assist that is like the Tesla Autopilot. It is available in the First Max, Tech and Max variants.
There is a trick by pressing both temp up and temp down together it switches the heated seat also I think if you touch the rear icon for longer it operates all the windows. I dont own the car but seen in another video. I take delivery of the ID3 tour in September. I hope its the right choice coming from a tiguan
Thanks for the review from Toronto. This hasn't even been priced yet here. It's suppose to arrive this summer but that could mean Sept. I think it's going to come down to the ID4 AWD or the IONIQ 5 AWD for me. I need the extra HP. MY daughters demand it. (9 and 13 yr olds are power hungry)
Strange that it doesn’t have the phone wireless charging, and the heat pump. Here in Germany, the ID4 first has both, in the Max and first trim. Actually I think it should be included in a version like this.
well id.4 has 6 packages (city, life, business, family, tech, max), why compare some life package spec version into Teslas ? most of those things are already from business package...
With regards to the part about not centring the car with lane assist on. Note that ID4 needs ‘travel assist’ to do that. It’s on the higher trim models. Travel assist will actively centre the car
I'm sure you do, but can you please check the tyre pressures with a quality tyre pressure gauge before you do these tests. Tyre pressures make a HUGE difference to "fuel" consumption. Don't just rely on the onboard seniors unless they have been celebrated. Nice video
I have the 1st edition they sold in USA. It did come with powered rear gate, wireless entry, wireless phone charger and power seats. I guess it doesn't matter anymore as they're now selling the Pro/Pro S/AWD The bugs on infotainment and certain features showing error are real. At the dealership they say there is no records in the car for those errors and asked me to make videos of it with my phone. US version does have that extra deep pocket for charging cables like the one shown here in the tesla model Y. In the US version you can disable the lane assists from a button in the steering wheel.
Wish they would give us the gift package when people buy an ID.4 here in the states, I know our customers would love it. We also have Wireless charging standard on our ID.4s as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I also gotta say, love the explosion footage when showing how solid the door closing is on the Volkswagen....lol.
A good review and nice to see an unbias one that addresses the real point of purchasing an ID.4. it's not to race Tesla owners away from the lights but it's to get 2 big dogs in the boot and take them into the countryside or to the seaside for walks, shoving kids or grandkids in the back seat and driving them in safety and comfort on days out etc, the one thing that I would like to see in any review and something that I have been thinking about when I have seen people search the ID.4 over complex console for and not finding what they were after is how functional is the voice command function, how easy would it have been just to ask the car to turn the heated steering wheel on or the climate control etc, VW warm my feet, VW play radio one. I don't know but I would be interested to see it tested
Great video, ENTERTAINING and INTERESTING at the same time. Unfortunately you had an early example, the ID.4 in the meantime has the improved software and most of the features you were missing. Would like to see a comparison between ID.4 an MY, which by now should be the main rivals. Keep on going
The software is terrible unfortunately, hope it improves though. I think it’s even better than the Ford Mach E and I really like the lights on it. Classic German. I hope I can test drive it in at my local VW dealership here in NY. I like my Tesla 3 though
Seems like you bought basic version of ID4 aka basic version probably Life. You have Max and Tech that have key-less, power tailgate, wireless charging, electrical 12way adjusted seats. At least in Norway.
I don't like how they are making so much into the screen and settings. I do like some basic buttons still, heated wheel, heated seats, a/c, etc. Awesome job though, looks solid overall!
Shame that review is done without latest software that fixes all the bugs, and also a model without any features, the EU first Max is loaded. You can use voice commands to activate seat heating or tab temperature button with two fingers ;-) If you know how to operate the system it is really good.
I’ve just ordered one of these Richard. Opted for the Life Pure in Kings Red for under £32k with some added options. Only thing is that I have to wait a fair while due to backlog. 😬
I am wondering how they will be reliable after a year or 2? You said you have driven EV cars for years, how are they reliability wise. Not just ID4 but most of the EV cars. Thanks, great video.
Hi Richard, lane assist “always on” when you start the car is a requirement in the NCAP safety test in order to get a better rating. Could be that this becomes a legal standard one day
Interesting cheers. I get it, but I’ve found it counter productive at times. Mainly on our narrow country roads it tries to fight the lane and ours the car offline and into hedges…
Needed to mention that Modes change the suspension, ride feel. Ps it does have Apple CarPlay! Pps. The haptic controls are on many VWs eg Golf 8 it’s not just an ID thing.
The UK 1st Ed doesn’t have the led headlight light bar that goes through the logo, and the indicators are bulbs. Why VW scrimped on small details is pure silliness.
Excellent review! So informative EXCEPT, what about spare wheel, warranty and servicing details.??? Please why does no one cover these things??...............
Great review. Saved my from buying an ID4. A great pity the GTX version only had dark boy racer interior trim instead of plush bright cream leather upholstery
Thank you. Informative and concise, no wasted syllables. You're review saved me from buying an ID4 eg: poor regen control, haptic controls not user convenient nor eyes off, lack of proper lane following tech (as opposed to see-saw between the lines). Quite like the look of it and the space, but haptic controls is a deal breaker.
I saw a metallic yellow ID4 in the car park of my local garden centre a few weeks ago, it looked really good in that colour but went on VW configurator and that yellow doesn't seem to be available! (maybe I'm doing something wrong) !
I’ve heard it does have that but I’ve not actually had the need for it myself just yet. Handy for getting a big bus around city streets sometimes I guess
Someone has told me it can, so will try that today. I drove the car back from Scotland and then the others have been using it so not had chance to try for myself as yet
@@RSEV The car setup wizard should configure it, took me literally 5 mins to get everything running at the VW dealer. I was pleasantly surprised as I had heard that the SW was buggy. WeConnect app also works, not that you can do a lot with it yet compared with Tesla.

Great review. There is nothing special, maybe the socks. But there is also nothing terrible. Some things you need to get used to. And all this makes a long relationship. And if German Engineering still is there (the car is actually produced in Germany), it is a decent daily car for years.
👍
I used to watch Top Gear now I watch R Simmons 👋👋🌍
Me too.

I had the pleasure of driving the ID.4 1st MAX yesterday, and it had all the bells and whistles (glassroof, 21" alloys, electric ajustable fronseats with memory and massage function, HUD with AR and so on)
I guess You just bought the wrong version of the ID.4... all though I'm not sure, that the 1st MAX is available in all countries.
UK does not have same equip as some other countries
You can reboot the buggy OS by pressing and holding the power button... sat nav etc will reboot.
9:00 Lane Assist is a safety feature that prevents you from driving out of the lane. There is also an option called Travel Assist that is like the Tesla Autopilot. It is available in the First Max, Tech and Max variants.
My GLI got that, it steers itself
1 ST max
Have the motorised tailgate.
Wireless charging
Panorama glasroof etc.
There is a trick by pressing both temp up and temp down together it switches the heated seat also I think if you touch the rear icon for longer it operates all the windows. I dont own the car but seen in another video. I take delivery of the ID3 tour in September. I hope its the right choice coming from a tiguan
Hello from Georgia, USA. Thank you for the informative content and entertainment - big fan!
I do think you override the eco mode if you press the pedal all the way to the floor, where there is a little click, I may be wrong though
I like analoge instrument cluster ,gear lever between front seats and no tiny buttons on the steering wheel. Great video by the way
Thanks for the review from Toronto.
Nice video
I mean, software aside, there's no question that it's solid. Good, even. But,.... Enyaq. Will the Skoda variant of this be better? I suspect it will.
Thanks for the in depth and honest review... Phew...I nearly made the mistake of buying one of these. That was a close escape!!
They’re good cars. I really like it. Just being bit picky… overall though a brilliant package for family use
I have the 1st edition they sold in USA. It did come with powered rear gate, wireless entry, wireless phone charger and power seats. I guess it doesn't matter anymore as they're now selling the Pro/Pro S/AWD
The bugs on infotainment and certain features showing error are real.
I like the window switches, I always accidentally move the rear windows?
When do you as a driver actually ever have to adjust the back windows...
Kick down for overtake ‘boost’ in eco i think.
I’ll check this. I floored and didnt get much. I think I’m just used to Tesla punch!
Love how you review cars!! I’m hooked. Bring more!!!
Such a helpful review! Sounds like VW has a lot of thinking to do.
The extras you are missing on your 1st are standard on the 1st Max, probably like the ID3 1st Max it didn't arrived on the UK
I think you wanted the 1st Max, it has all the bells and whistles you need. Seen in Bjørn Nyland's review video.
I don't think they get that model in UK
Yes Bjorn is great testing all the models
Not in the Uk (yet)
Great video, ENTERTAINING and INTERESTING at the same time. Unfortunately you had an early example, the ID.4 in the meantime has the improved software and most of the features you were missing. Would like to see a comparison between ID.4 an MY, which by now should be the main rivals. Keep on going
One thing I've learnt buying tech. Never buy something based on the presumption that software issues will be fixed in the future.
Excellent, honest, comprehensive review. Great work by the team!
Currently driving a Kia soul first edition 2020. Starting to look now at either vw id 4 Skoda enyak or ionic 5
Yes, the one i tested last weekend worked also with voice commands.
Great review, and really good to see your colleagues expressing their views too.
I’ve just ordered one of these Richard. Opted for the Life Pure in Kings Red for under £32k with some added options. Only thing is that I have to wait a fair while due to backlog. 😬
Buy some after market vinyl wrap to cover the area that you worry about scratching. Lots of them for Tesla and will be lots for this as well.
Great review. I agree that we should not apply cross-over SUV categories to EVs, as it just makes sense that EVs are taller given the batteries.
I am wondering how they will be reliable after a year or 2? You said you have driven EV cars for years, how are they reliability wise. Not just ID4 but most of the EV cars. Thanks, great video.
Nice vid. Living in Norway it comes at 19 inch standard. Worth paying the extra for 20 inch or 21 inch?
Hi Richard, lane assist “always on” when you start the car is a requirement in the NCAP safety test in order to get a better rating. Could be that this becomes a legal standard one day
Interesting cheers. I get it, but I’ve found it counter productive at times. Mainly on our narrow country roads it tries to fight the lane and ours the car offline and into hedges…
You guys still comparing a 40k$ or less car to a 75k$ or more car .
In the end you did not mentioned a free 3 years of dc fast charging with VW id4 .
Needed to mention that Modes change the suspension, ride feel.
Ps it does have Apple CarPlay!
Pps. The haptic controls are on many VWs eg Golf 8 it’s not just an ID thing.
10:47 So why don't you press with 2 fingers on the temperature slider beneath instead of navigating to the climate screen? Too easy? 😜
What I like the most about this video is there at least one Tesla always in view. Great work. Lol
The UK 1st Ed doesn’t have the led headlight light bar that goes through the logo, and the indicators are bulbs. Why VW scrimped on small details is pure silliness.
11:10 More of 'rock star' Joe please? Apart from his witty informative reviews, I'd like to see how big that moustache is going to get!
Any chance of doing a similar look at a mach e? I really think for the price vw are knocking these out the software should work properly?
Great, objective review as always Richard, look forward to seeing many others, particularly the Taycan and Audi GT
Trying to get hold of them... (taycan / gt)
Well I do think it’s a great car. Yes a few niggles but all cars do. Im keen to see the Skoda and audi variants.
Us version has pano roof, and massage seats, and all power goodies.
Doesn't have heat pump
Enjoyable review. Not seen this channel before. (ID4 looks good in white).
It seems that those 1st edition cars don't have a lot of comfort options available, which seems strange considering the price of this car...
If you press the button at 5:09 several times it will toggle between modes. Not that much fast though.
I saw a metallic yellow ID4 in the car park of my local garden centre a few weeks ago, it looked really good in that colour but went on VW configurator and that yellow doesn't seem to be available! (maybe I'm doing something wrong) !
ok - once the winged tiger showed up I had to hit the LIKE button
Even 2011 Leaf overrides eco mode lagģy pedal if pushed to floor
Great review... I have booked a viewing for next week. Should be good. You didn't mention the incredible turning circle
I’ve heard it does have that but I’ve not actually had the need for it myself just yet. Handy for getting a big bus around city streets sometimes I guess
@@RSEV if you'd needed an incredible turning circle driving from Edinburgh to Bournemouth, something had gone badly wrong.
@@djwarren5081 😂
Love your reviews. Keep up the great work !
Good video Richard very balanced opinions throughout, that heated steering looks a nightmare 😂
Apple CarPlay (wireless) works just fine on my ID4.
We’ve tried couple devices and it just won’t. Will try getting a software update from VW
@@RSEV thats an interesting point - no OTA updates for the infotainment then?
Someone has told me it can, so will try that today. I drove the car back from Scotland and then the others have been using it so not had chance to try for myself as yet
@@RSEV The car setup wizard should configure it, took me literally 5 mins to get everything running at the VW dealer. I was pleasantly surprised as I had heard that the SW was buggy. WeConnect app also works, not that you can do a lot with it yet compared with Tesla.
Excellent way to make the video involving all your staff, comprehensive, direct and unbiased.
