I'm glad that obi wan & Darth vader, han solo & the terminator are on the list, but what about kyle Reese(HERO),T1000(VILLIAN) & Luke Skywalker(HERO),Michael Myers(VILLIAN)
Films on this list I own: Gladiator, Philadelphia, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Batman, The French Connection, The Ten Commandments, Serpico, True Grit, Fargo, Patton, Superman, On the Waterfront, Spartacus, Dirty Harry, Shane, Star Wars, Schindler's List, The Grapes of Wrath, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Lawrence of Arabia, It's a Wonderful Life, Aliens, Rocky, The Silence of the Lambs, Casablanca, Dr. No, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and To Kill a Mockingbird
Films on this list I've seen: Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Batman, Ten Commandments, City Lights, Star Wars Episode IV, True Grit, Fargo, Superman, On the Waterfront, Schindler's List, Grapes of Wrath, It's a Wonderful Life, Aliens, The Silence of the Lambs, Casablanca, Dr. No, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Also Here are a few other canidates the AFI should nominated or at least recognize: Stephen "Bull" McCaffery (BackDraft), Wolverine (Xmen), President James Marshall (Air Force One), Leon (The Professional), Jack Ryan (Patriot Games), Coach Herman Boone (Remember The Titans), Lisabeth Salander (The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo), Casey Ryback (Under Siege), Sgt. William James (The Hurt Locker) and Sam Wheat (Ghost).
Father Flanagan is #42... Also, Moses (#43) and Gandhi (#21) both appear on the list. If I remember correctly, Sergeant York (#35) is also depicted as very religious.
Since this was made in June 2003, the new guys on this list would be: Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean (JULY 2003)), The Bride (Kill Bill Vol.1(OCTOBER 2003)), V (V for Vendetta (2006)), Juno MacGuff (Juno (2007)), and Rooster Cogburn (True Grit (2010) remake).
There's a few if not alot of characters they are missing from the list: Eric Draven (The Crow), Douglass Quaid (Total Recall), Robocop, Neo (The Matrix), William Wallace (Braveheart), and Hawkeye (Last of the Mohicans).
here are people who would be on a updated version of this list. Harry Potter, Coach Don Haskins(Glory Road), Katniss Everdeen(Hunger games), Wolverine(X-men), Jack Sparrow(Pirates of the Carribean) also WHERE THE HELL IS MALCOLM X.
.... should have added Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale; Bette Davis as Charlotte Vale in now voyager; Whoopi Goldberg as Miss Celie in the Color Purple; Audrey Hepburn as Suzy Hendrix in Wait Until Dark, and the young Elizabeth Taylor as Velvet Brown in National Velvet!!
not bad, but seems kind of a joke put Lassie, Superman and Han Solo next to Serpico, Oscar Schindler and Atticus Finch. I mean, this realistic (even based on real people) moral, noble and dignified heroes deserve a serious list. can't be ranking with juvenile sci fi heroes
universal heroes who could also leave for a second list: Atticus finch “ To Kill A Mockinbird “ Emmett Bell “ Pillars Of the Sky “ Rick O Connell “ Demon And The Mummy Movies “ Óskar Shindler “ List of Shindler “ Scott Pilgrim Bo Darville and Sheriff Buford T “Smokey And Banditt “ Spartacus Benson Winifred Payne “ Mayor Payne “ Erin Brickovish Hanna kaufman “ Hanna K.” L. B. "Jeff" Jefferies “ Rear Window “ Maximus Decimus Meridius “ Gladiator “
A List of Heroes they should add for the future: Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Jack Sparrow (Pirates of The Carribean), Aragon The Ranger (LOTR), Batman (The Dark Knight), Daniel Archer (Blood Diamond), Sherlock Holmes (Game of Shadows), Harry Potter (Deathly Hallows 2), Dominic Cobb (Inception), Jake Sully (Avatar), Jason Bourne, King Leonidas (300) and Gandulf The Grey (LOTR).
The terminator should of been in the top 10, so should of Oskar Schindler and Maximus. Also Marlon Brando from On the Waterfront should of been in the top ten. And where is Forrest Gump, John Mcclane, William Wallace, Rambo.
What strikes me here is the absence of religious heroes and heroes from many great works of literature. For example where is Sir Thomas More in "A Man for all Seasons" or Father Flanagan in "Boys Town" or Bernadette in "Song of Bernadette? Or "Sister Kinney" or any of the movies about Christ? Or Sidney Carton in "Tale of Two Cities" or "Gunga Din " from the movie of the same name? Or any of the movies about Lincoln?
i feel like gandhi was a better hero than Clarice Starling, she got the guy yeah, but Gandhi inspired a frickin nation through non violence and succeeded. hell of a lot more heroic than starling.
I'm a little disappointed that Luke Skywalker wasn't on the list, but I'm glad Han was.

glad that rocky is in the top 10
Also a new list would have Aragon(LoTR) Sherlock Holmes, Spiderman(The Amazing Spiderman), Rorschach(Watchman)
Arnold's hero Terminator was too low for me. But, I'm glad Ripley is so high.

Spartacus

Erin Brickovish
Hanna kaufman “ Hanna K.”

Maximus Decimus Meridius “ Gladiator “
There's only one thing to say about the AFI's list.
HAN SOLO WAS ON IT!!!!!!!!!
So awesome, Atticus Finch.. a real hero to look up to ... how about Jean Valjean??
Am I the only one who thinks that George Bailey should be a little high up on the list than he was. I always thought he would be in the top 5.
Where is William Wallace, Forrest Gump, John Mcclane, Rambo, Jason Bourne, Jack(Titanic), and more.
Who's the leader of the heroes?
Where's Morris Day!?!? He was an awesome villain in Purple Rain.
Batman in Batman. Superman in Superman. What Batman movie? What of all Superman movies? would you be more specific?

A List of Heroes they should add for the future: Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games), Jack Sparrow (Pirates of The Carribean), Aragon The Ranger (LOTR), Batman (The Dark Knight), Daniel Archer (Blood Diamond), Sherlock Holmes (Game of Shadows), Harry Potter (Deathly Hallows 2), Dominic Cobb (Inception), Jake Sully (Avatar), Jason Bourne, King Leonidas (300) and Gandulf The Grey (LOTR).

i feel like gandhi was a better hero than Clarice Starling, she got the guy yeah, but Gandhi inspired a frickin nation through non violence and succeeded. hell of a lot more heroic than starling.
