  • The American Film Institute's AFI 100 Years... series includes AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars ranking their selections for the top 25 male and 25 female greatest screen legends of American film history. On June 15, 1999, a CBS special hosted by Shirley Temple unveiled the list with fifty current actors making the presentations.
AFI defined an "American screen legend" as an actor or a team of actors during the Classical Hollywood cinema era with a significant screen presence in American feature-length (40 min or more) films whose screen debut occurred in or before 1950, or whose screen debut occurred after 1950 but whose death has marked a completed body of work, ie., actors recognized for their contributions to classical Hollywood American cinema.

I remember watching this years ago and at 22:10 not quite getting what Gregory Hines was talking about. Now in the context of #OscarsSoWhite its easier to understand his frustration, especially considering that this was 3 years off from Denzel/Halle both getting Oscars;Whoopi was the most recent winner to that point and then in the Supporting category. Not sure if this is the "her" he was referring to in the clip, but it would be helpful to see the AFI interview in its full context.

Always wondered why this was billed as "100 Stars" when they only covered 25 male and 25 female actors. Just realized they had interviews with 50 actors for this presentation so there's the 100 lol.

I think everyone thought the same thing for years lol, it should've been 50 male and 50 female actors since they dubbed it 100 stars. I guess maybe, just maybe, and it's just my theory, that they couldn't do the actual 100 stars and instead only chose to celebrate 50 was because of time consuming. It already took over 2 hours with 50 and if you do 100, it would double the time, meaning it would take over 4 hours to finish it and there's a chance that they'll have to cut it into 2 episodes, but they obviously weren't allowed to do a 2-part episode because there're many other shows to be aired later on and if they did it, the channel would've to move another show to a different air time and it might cost a lot. I wish they did the list of actors who placed 26th - 50th in both genders as honorable mention though, it would've been better since there're many great actors that didn't make the cut here and it bumped.

They should've done one on a night of 1000 Stars I don't know how many stars that Hollywood had before 1990 that were still alive then but we've lost many more since then with the recent passing of Donald Sutherland

In commemorative of Ingrid's 105th biethday, I present you the Afi's 100 greatest screen legends. Where is Ingrid, our lady in this ranking? There is my hint; pretty high, higher than her one compatriot.😃
I welcome anyone who wants to debate this ranking.

Jack Lemmon se sintio discriminado si hubiera una secuela como el mismo dijo podria ser los que hayan comenzado su carrera en 1960 o antes , ahi si cabría el Mathau, Newman y tantos otros.

The only thing i dislike about AFI is the actors introduction. A waste of time

as Jack Lemmon states in order to be eligible you have to have started their film career in or before 1950. James Dean would not be eligible and sadly Audrey Hepburn who's first feature film was in 1951 would not be on this list.

He said that or they would have otherwise ended their body of work if they had started after 1950. If you look at some of the nominees it includes people like Divine, John Belushi, Raul Julia, and Jayne Mansfield - all of whom started their movie careers WAY after 1950 but "completed their bodies of work" before 1999. Still waiting on that sequel.
